Interview with General Hux – AKA Domnhall Gleeson

On December 2-4 I had the experience of a lifetime to travel to Los Angeles and experience the magic, wonder and mystery that surrounds Star Wars – The Last Jedi. The trip surrounded the December 3 Press Junket and brought forth a ton of excitement from all of the actors that were present, but also all of the people in the audience too.

Domhnall Gleeson

After the press event we interviewed: Domhnall Gleeson (“General Hux”), Gwendoline Christie (“Captain Phasma”), Laura Dern (“Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo”), and Kelly Marie Tran (“Rose Tico”).

Domhnall Gleeson

While Domhnall Gleeson may seem evil in Star Wars – The Last Jedi, in our interview you could tell he was fun-loving and just truly enjoying the whole Star Wars experience.

Domhnall Gleeson

One of the interesting things we learned about Domhnall Gleeson was that while the rest of the cast saw the entire movie the week prior to the press event, he chose not to do this because, as he said “I would rather see it with people that do not know what is coming to experience it through their eyes.”

Domhnall Gleeson

I talked to Domhnall Gleeson about the rage that he shows in his character and where he finds this for himself. Domhnall explained that it was more than rage and instead there was a desperation about him to have power and to be seen as important. “You have to put yourself in that place as insecurity is not a solid place to start.”

Domhnall Gleeson

photo credit: Louise Bishop of MomStart.com

Domhnall Gleeson explained that at the beginning of the second movie you see that Geberal Hux is in a bad place. He has lost the base and has had to flee and retreat. He still wants his place on the throne but in this movie he is in a desperate place and you have to understand this to understand the character.

Domhnall Gleeson

We asked Domhnall Gleeson about how hard it is to keep the secrets that Star Wars – The Last Jedi requires. He shared that “it’s hard to not be able to spoil things for people…it’s easy to say nothing and it’s hard to say little.” He further explained that there is a general understanding amonst the cast of what we can or cannot say.

In this film Domhnall Gleeson sais that it really explores the light and dark of all characters. “Everyone has light and dark moments.”

Using The Force To Learn The Truth About Star Wars – The Last Jedi

December 13, 2017 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Star Wars - The Last Jedi

On December 2-4 I had the experience of a lifetime to travel to Los Angeles and experience the magic, wonder and mystery that surrounds Star Wars – The Last Jedi. The trip surrounded the December 3 Press Junket and brought forth a ton of excitement from all of the actors that were present, but also all of the people in the audience too. On top of this I was in the front row for the Press Junket so I could really geek out at being that close to actors who I admire greatly!

Star Wars - The Last Jedi

I can honestly say that all of the actors did a great job at maintaining the mystery surrounding the film. We did not receive any spoilers, nor did we get a peek at further parts of the movie that you have probably not seen yet, however I will say that you could easily see the passion that all of the actors had at the making of this film, but also the passion that they have for the entire world that Star Wars embodies. The actors that were present at the press junket included: Mark Hamill (“Luke Skywalker”), Daisy Ridley (“Rey”), John Boyega (“Finn”), Oscar Isaac (“Poe Dameron”), Adam Driver (“Kylo Ren”), Domhnall Gleeson (“General Hux”), Gwendoline Christie (“Captain Phasma”), Andy Serkis (“Supreme Leader Snoke”), Laura Dern (“Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo”), Kelly Marie Tran (“Rose Tico”) and Director Rian Johnson

Star Wars - The Last Jedi

Many of the actors made the comment at how much they appreciated Rian Johnson, the movie’s director, and his ability to allow them the freedom to explore and develop the characters’ that they portrayed. Laura Dern commented at how much the filming of this movie reminded her of being on an independent movie set because of the culture and the family that was developed in the filming of this film. As Oscar Isaac stated “Rian challenged everyone to learn about their characters on a spectrum of light to dark.” This was echoed by Laura Dern as she explained that all of the actors had to go on a journey for themselves to see where they really fell and it allowed them to “bring out their characters” even further. Mark Hammill even stated that even after being Luke for the number of times that he has, he was still nervous to come back. Mark stated that Rian “pushed me to get out of my comfort zone and I’m grateful; you have to trust someone and he was the only Obi Won available to me.”

Star Wars - The Last Jedi

There were a few questions from the audience that tried to get the actors to reveal some of the plot of the movie but none of the actors gave an inch regarding this. There was an experience where Mark Hammill was asked what it was like training Rey and whether he had to take on his inner yoda to do it. Mark’s response: ” You are assuming I train Rey.” While this was the case, there was no lack of great insights that were shared.

Star Wars - The Last Jedi

One poignant topic related to the female cast members sharing their thoughts on the importance of strong female characters for girls today. Even some of the male actors spoke on this. Oscar Isaac stated that “the people that impacted me most in my life were women.” Many of the women reflected on the life and the person that Carrie Fisher was. Gwendoline Christie stated that she “saw New Hope as a girl and found the character of Leia to be courageous…she did not look the same as other women in film and this was instrumental into who I wanted to be.” Laura Dern explained that Carrie Fisher impacted her in many ways. She saw Carrie Fisher as a women “without shame….she gave so much and shared her story and expected the same of those around her.”

Below you will find a video with a few clips from the press junket. I know this will not express the entire experience, but it will give you a flavor of what I experienced as well.

An Interview With Captain Phasma – AKA Gwendoline Christie

December 12, 2017 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

On December 2-4 I had the experience of a lifetime to travel to Los Angeles and experience the magic, wonder and mystery that surrounds Star Wars – The Last Jedi. The trip surrounded the December 3 Press Junket and brought forth a ton of excitement from all of the actors that were present, but also all of the people in the audience too.

After the press event we interviewed: Domhnall Gleeson (“General Hux”), Gwendoline Christie (“Captain Phasma”), Laura Dern (“Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo”), and Kelly Marie Tran (“Rose Tico”).

Gwendoline Christie was so gracious as we gave her a warm welcome to our room full of bloggers. We were impressed by her candor in the press event and she did not disappoint in our interview either.

captain phasma

While Gwendoline did not spill too much (as all of the actors were sworn to secrecy on many aspects of the movie), she did explain that in this film you see Captain Phasma in a bad place, as this is where she was left at the end of the last movie. Gwendoline Christie explained that in this film you will see much more Phasma and that she is “resilient and has a need to fulfill her destiny; an overriding sense of revenge and a violence that comes from deep inside her.”

Gretchen Christie

photo credit: Louise Bishop of MomStart.com

One of things that is intriguing for Gwendoline Christie was the cbreaking of societal norms that Captain Phasma portrays and shows. In society “women are not supposed to have violence from within.”

We asked Gwendoline Christie about her costume and she explained how much she loved it. While the costume was rigid and uncompromising, it allowed her to have her “senses shut down and exist entirely practically.”

Gretchen Christie

photo credit: Louise Bishop of MomStart.com

With the character of Captain Phasma, Gwendoline Christie shared that “in every role that you take there is something that you need to do. With Captain Phasma she has a degree of strength that Rian Johnson and I worked on a lot.”

With all of the fighting that Captain Phasma does, she had to have a great trainer and Gwendoline Christie explained that CC Smith was the stunt director that she worked with on Star Wars – The Last Jedi. She was so excited to work with him again as she first worked with him on Game of Thrones. CC Smith had to work with Gwendoline as Phasma to execute the physicality of her character because she is a woman with a different strength and conviction than Gwendoline. Gwendoline Christie shared that CC Smith has allowed her to make training a part of her life and while she may not always enjoy it, it has pushed her to do things she never thought she could and it gave her “the courage to accomplish more.”

Gretchen Christie

Gwendoline Christie explored Phasma deeply as she continued to play her in this movie. She stated that she knows she is a person, but she had to understand why she behaves the way that she does. In doing this she found that she is fearful and this fear takes Phasma over and leads to loss of empathy.

Laura Dern plays Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo and while we did get to interview her we did not get a lot out of her in regards to what will be happening in the film itself. Instead, she gave us basics about her character as she told us “I have purple hair” and also that she is strong without having to wear men’s clothes.

Laura Dern explained how amazing it was to work with Director Rian Johnson. She stated how “amazing it was to be in Rian’s head. It was incredible to collaborate on who she is in the film.”

From Laura’s explanation, she was a huge fan of Star Wars growing up and being asked to be a part of this film was an amazing opportunity. She had always been impressed by the “legacy of deepest storytelling that surrounded Star Wars and you feel this in every character in a profound and beautiful way.

Laura Dern explained that her parents were in the movie business growing up so she was raised to love character and cinema. She stated that her parents were excited that she was in Star Wars – The Last Jedi. Her mother loves that she has purple hair and her father remarked that he “didn;t know that you get jewelry and nail color in space.”

She, like a number of the women on the Star Wars – The Last Jedi panel reflected their admiration of Carrie Fisher. Laura Dern explained that Leia “was an inspiration for me as she embodied being fearless, vulnerable, bold, powerful and more and we don’t see this all the time.” She loves that girls now have characters like Rey and her character (and others) for which to find inspiration.

At the end of our interview with Laura Dern we had a group shot, the shot you saw at the top of this post. As we set up for this post, I was on one knee and Laura Dern walks up and says “I do”, laughed and I went along with it for a special moment between the two of us. This moment and others throughout the time together allowed us to see Laura Dern as a person and I will tell you, what we saw impressed us all!

The Star Wars – The Last Jedi Press Event Was a Fans’ Dream Come True!

December 8, 2017 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Star Wars - The Last Jedi

On December 2-4 I had the experience of a lifetime to travel to Los Angeles and experience the magic, wonder and mystery that surrounds Star Wars – The Last Jedi. The trip surrounded the December 3 Press Junket and brought forth a ton of excitement from all of the actors that were present, but also all of the people in the audience too. On top of this the people running the press event had a whole floor of other great Star Wars items to make our experiences even more fun!

The first part of the day surrounded the press junket where I was lucky enough to have snagged a front row seat to the event. As the cast was brought into the event being guarded by the praetorian guard, you knew that the event would be special. The junket itself had all of the main cast members including: Mark Hamill (“Luke Skywalker”), Daisy Ridley (“Rey”), John Boyega (“Finn”), Oscar Isaac (“Poe Dameron”), Adam Driver (“Kylo Ren”), Domhnall Gleeson (“General Hux”), Gwendoline Christie (“Captain Phasma”), Andy Serkis (“Supreme Leader Snoke”), Laura Dern (“Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo”), Kelly Marie Tran (“Rose Tico”) and Director Rian Johnson

Star Wars - The Last Jedi Star Wars - The Last Jedi Star Wars - The Last Jedi

While the cast was still quite secretive when it came to the film, they did share some of their experiences together as a cast and spoke t the legacy that they were leaving for Star Wars fans now and in the future. The press event went for about 45 minutes and in the end while we didn’t learn the secrets behind the movie, it was a bit awe-inspiring to be in the presence of the cast and to hear about their experiences!

After the press junket, we had the ability to interview a few of the great actors of the Star Wars – The Last Jedi. For us, we were able to meet Domhnall Gleeson (“General Hux”), Gwendoline Christie (“Captain Phasma”), Laura Dern (“Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo”), and Kelly Marie Tran (“Rose Tico”).  Throughout this month I will share my impressions from these interviews so watch for them as these actors were very raw and open with us and again, while they had to watch what they shared, it was so much fun to explore the film with each of them.

Star Wars - The Last Jedi

After the interviews and lunch, we had the opportunity to go and explore a whole floor of Star Wars related fan items, products, VR Experiences and more. On top of this we had the opportunity to interact with two of the droids from the film, BB8 and BB9E. These two droids were so lively and fun and as you will see below I even had a great chat with BB8 that was truly memorable.

We were able to make our own T-Shirts with six designs to choose from and there were some amazing Star Wars products that we got to engage with and I will tell you that if I had the chance to load up my own Christmas list with these Star Wars products I would! I especially loved the two VR Experiences that we had.

There were images from the filming of Star Wars – The Last Jedi and I, for one, found these to be so much fun as well. I loved interacting with all the brands that were in attendance. All were so excited to meet all of the fans that were also bloggers and press representatives. If you are looking for some very unique gifts there will be a ton that revolves around Star Wars and/or Star Wars – The Last Jedi that are either out already or will be out before you know it!

I even got a fun Porg cup that I am already using!

Below is a video I created that shows you some of the experiences I had on this great day!

All-in-all this was a wonderful day that completely drew me in and allowed my inner-Star Wars geek to shine. It was an experience that I will definitely not forget.

Watch throughout this month as I share even more experiences from this event as you will want to read more about the press junket and the interviews that I had!

Holiday Time at Disneyland Was The Perfect Way To Visit An Amazing Park!

December 7, 2017 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Disneyland

Disneyland

For me, going to Disneyland was a dream come true. As you probably know my family are big Disney fans, but though this is the case, I had never visited Disneyland until last week. You see, at the beginning of December I and a number of other bloggers visited Los Angeles to celebrate the new Star Wars: The Last Jedi movie along with exploring Disneyland and some amazing new ABC shows.

Disneyland

We visited Disneyland to explore all of the wonder and magic that surrounds it during the holidays as well as celebrating the release of the updated Star Tours – The Adventure Continues.

Startours

Startours

Startours

We flew into Los Angeles and after only a few hours we ended up boarding a van to go and explore Disneyland. We stopped at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa to be able to easily access the park. The hotel was absolutely beautiful and with the huge open area that you walk into once you enter and it being decorated for the Holidays, it was a site to see as you can see in the pictures here.

Staying at this hotel also gives you the opportunity to easily access Downtown Disney which leads you right to the entrance of Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

Disneyland

We went right to Disneyland and as we were walking in we saw the iconic front of the park and at the moment we were there they were getting ready for the candlelight processional. We did not have time to see it, but I heard later that is was amazing! Well. we headed right to Star Tours to explore the new experience. We had some amazing tour guides that were able to get us right on the rides. This made the experience so amazing as the night that we visited was VERY busy, but it did not seem that way at all because of the ability to go on without hardly any wait.

Disneyland

Star Tours -The Adventure Continues was a great ride, There are some amazing new scenes from the new Star Wars – The Last Jedi movie. I was really excited to see this and it did not disappoint. The ride was a thrill ride and we all left even more excited to see the movie!

Disneyland

We had dinner at the Galactic Grill and I had an amazing salad that completely hit the spot.

Disneyland Disneyland

Disneyland

From dinner it was off to It’s A Small World and the Haunted Mansion which were both decorated and changed for the Holidays. At It’s a Small World we were mesmerized by the lights that were placed all over the outside of the ride. Beyond this though the entire ride itself was changed so that it celebrated the holidays including music and displays. The ride itself was amazing and I loved the new changes. I found out that it took about 3 weeks to make all of the changes for the holidays and you could really see that. I also found that Disneyland is the only place that you will see this.

Disneyland

From It’s a Small World it was over to The Haunted Mansion. As we walked up on this, again, it was completely changed for the holidays. The ride was changed over to be taken over with Jack and the whole crew from The Nightmare Before Christmas. The ride was again a ton of fun but so different that I had experienced in the past. Not that this was bad, but it was a ton of fun!

Disneyland California Adventure Disneyland California Adventure

While I would have stayed longer at Disneyland, we had to go over to Disney’s California Adventure. When we got there we had a blast exploring so many new things. One of my favorite rides was the new Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission Break Out. As a big fan of Guardians of the Galaxy you could probably understand why I was so excited about this ride. There were some main differences outside of just the plot from Tower of Terror, but it was a ton of fun for everyone. Just take a look at our group photo and you will see what I mean.

Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission Break Out

Disneyland California Adventure

Walking around this park there are so many fun finds in each area of the park. I even found out that there are future plans to have Marvel characters in one section of the park and a whole other area that will eventually have a Pixar theme.

In all, I was so impressed with both parks. We tried to fit in so much in a very short period of time, but what we saw made me want to come back and spend a ton more time in the future!

Here is a video of some of my experiences
