Toxic Masculinity Is Real: We Must Do Better

October 28, 2020 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Baby Sitting on Man's Shoulder

When it comes to thinking of my role as a man and a father, I know that it is impacted by the world around me, as well as the world that I grew up in.

The challenge?

Many men are growing up with traditional ideas about what it means to be a man that sometimes can be considered to be toxic masculinity.

What is toxic masculinity?

Toxic masculinity is defined as an adherence to traditional male gender roles that consequently stigmatize and limit the emotions boys and men may comfortably express while elevating other emotions such as anger.

When I see this definition it makes me sad, as I know that men in general can be so much more without being held back by traditional male gender roles.

As a guy that was a bit more emotional, I was teased and told by other guys to “be a man” when I was young.

When did being a man become being someone that could not show emotion. By hiding away our emotions we hide away a side of our selves that make it even harder to connect with others in our lives, making many only see one side of who we actually are.

Vault Health recently wrote a blog post that explored this issue even more in depth.

The thing that this article says is that Toxic Masculinity can affect men’s health because “it’s not manly to be going to the doctor regularly” or “talking about deficiencies as we age is weak” They are completely right. I mean, how many men talk about low testosterone levels and how this impacts us, not many that I have seen. Vault Health has a unique way of helping all men to take better control of their health. .

Beau Brummell: Charcoal Facial Mask

Beau Brummell: Charcoal Facial Mask
The Beau Brummell Charcoal Facial Mask treatment draws out impurities from your pores with Kaolin-rich clay and activated charcoal then softens with natural conditioning botanicals. The Charcoal Facial Mask promotes natural skin cell health to help improve smoothness. This invigorating mask will become an essential part of your weekly routine. The result is refreshing and a more vibrant complexion, so you can stay handsome.

As I have gotten older I have found that my skin has started to get oily and I have to do different things to make sure that I can remove the excess oil and dirt from my skin’s surface and from deep within my skin’s pores. In using this Mens face mask I found that it really works. The mash detoxifies using active charcoal to absorb 100x its weight in oil and toxins. It also tightens the skin, minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The product works and does work to get rid of the oily spots as well as tightens skin as well. I wish I had found this when I was younger, but am glad that I have found this now!

Special Offer
Use coupon code ‘BEAU15BRUMMELL’ for 15% off your total purchase at beaubrummellformen.com. Offer valid through January 31st, 2019 at 11:59 pm EST.

Overall this was a VERY complete box with so much included within it. I would highly recommend this box to anyone that really wants to surprise a man in their life, but also, if you are a guy and want a box that will definitely pamper you a bit, this is definitely the box for you!

DADuary Book Review – Man With A Pan #DADuary2013 #dadchat

January 29, 2013 by dadofdivas 4 Comments

About the Book
Look who’s making dinner! Twenty-one of our favorite writers and chefs expound upon the joys—and perils—of feeding their families.
Mario Batali’s kids gobble up monkfish liver and foie gras. Peter Kaminsky’s youngest daughter won’t eat anything at all. Mark Bittman reveals the four stages of learning to cook. Stephen King offers tips about what to cook when you don’t feel like cooking. And Jim Harrison shows how good food and wine trump expensive cars and houses. This book celebrates those who toil behind the stove, trying to nourish and please. Their tales are accompanied by more than sixty family-tested recipes, time-saving tips, and cookbook recommendations, as well as New Yorker cartoons. Plus there are interviews with homestyle heroes from all across America—a fireman in Brooklyn, a football coach in Atlanta, and a bond trader in Los Angeles, among others.

What emerges is a book not just about food but about our changing families. It offers a newfound community for any man who proudly dons an apron and inspiration for those who have yet to pick up the spatula.

My Take on the Book

As a father who likes to cook, this book, is an amazing collection of recipes and adventures that men have had cooking for their families. Many of the selections within the book as humorous, and all are down-to-earth and easy to understand. There were a ton of great recipes that I am looking forward to trying myself including the Meatloaf recipe (I love Meatloaf) as well as the Lone Star State of Mind Chili! These are only two of the recipes, but there are SO many more that will make your mouth water.

Outside of good recipes, the story also shares the experiences of fathers cooking for and with their families, which can be both fun and sometimes harrowing at times. All-in-all though this book takes a pretty informal tone which makes it easy to read, and easy to get through. I had a ton of fun reading the book, and it was one that took me only a few days to read through and now I want to go back and start trying the recipes that I ear-marked along the way through in my first reading!

Guys, Did You Know? – Tips from @DermDoc & @DoveMenCare

September 29, 2011 by dadofdivas 54 Comments

The Absolute Essentials

By Dr. Jeffrey Benabio

Men’s skincare is a trending topic.  Facebook and Twitter have become great forums for skincare discussion (I’m a regular on Twitter @DermDoc), where guys can crowd-source recommendations and learn about products designed for them. For example, check out @DoveMenCare where conversations range from how family vacations to playing a favorite sport can take a toll on your skin.  With a plethora of new men’s products on the market, it’s important to be informed.

  • Lather, rinse, simplify!  Since some men don’t like using a loofah in the shower, it’s important to simplify the body washing process with a product that lathers easily, like Dove Men+Care Clean Comfort Body and Face Wash.  The products are formulated using ultra-light micromoisture technology, a unique gel technology that activates on skin during lather to guard against discomfort.
  • Don’t forget your feet.  Feet are the most ignored body part in the shower, which can lead to Athlete’s Foot or staph.  Prevention can be as easy as rubbing hand sanitizer on feet (especially before hitting a shower at your gym), which will kill off infections.  (It’s important to rub in sanitizer for at least sixty seconds or until all the alcohol has fully evaporated for it to really work!)
  • It’s not the socks!  Men often attribute dry skin on their feet to their socks.  Since feet skin is sensitive and prone to dryness, it’s important to use a personal wash that thoroughly cleanses skin while fighting dryness, like Dove Men+Care Body and Face Bar, which contains Dove’s signature ¼ moisturizing cream.
  • Locker room care.  After sweating and getting tossed around on the field, sports equipment like football helmets will get dirty, which can lead to folliculitis or staph infections.  To avoid infection, equipment should be cleaned with rubbing alcohol, a locker staple.  And to minimize the items in your gym bag, it’s helpful to use products that serve multiple purposes, like Dove Men+Care Body and Face Wash, the #1 dermatologist recommended brand.
  • The absolute essentials.  Most men don’t want to spend significant time perfecting their grooming routine; these are the essential products for every guy, in order of importance – antiperspirant/deodorant, shampoo, body wash.  You need a moisturizer in the winter, and a sunscreen in the summer.  (And all can be found at the local drug store.)

Book Review – Wild at Heart: Discovering the Secret to a Man’s Soul

    April 20, 2010 by dadofdivas 1 Comment

About the BookGod designed men to be dangerous, says John Eldredge. Simply look at the dreams and desires written in the heart of every boy: To be a hero, to be a warrior, to live a life of adventure and risk. Sadly, most men abandon those dreams and desires—aided by a Christianity that feels like nothing more than pressure to be a “nice guy.” It is no wonder that many men avoid church, and those who go are often passive and bored to death. In this provocative book, Eldredge gives women a look inside the true heart of a man and gives men permission to be what God designed them to be—dangerous, passionate, alive, and free.

    My Take on the Book
I didn’t know what to expect in reading this book. I liked what the author says at the very beginning: “Do we really need another book for men? Nope. We need something else. We need permission. Permission to be what we are – men made in God’s image.” From the very beginning of this book, as a man, you are taking on a journey into a realm of what God has in store for any man in today’s society. Thus, for me, as a man, a leader, a husband and a father this book truly engages men in some very relevant topics that touch today’s men.

While I had not read the first edition of this book, I was impressed with how frank the book was and how well it brings out the struggles and issues that men today grapple with. The book raises some great questions on how men can hold themselves accountable to why they are the way they are. The book definitely raises some questions that made me think and made me struggle a bit, but for me this is the hallmark of a great book.

I would recommend this book as a gift to any man of any background. It provides strong encouragement for men to be what God created them to be.

If this book sounds like something that you would be interested in you can find it on Amazon!
