Simple Ways to Encourage Learning

February 28, 2022 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Developing a love of learning benefits children and continues providing them with positive outcomes as adults. A few simple actions can help foster a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.

Engaging Activities

In order for learning activities to be engaging, they need to be interesting, age-appropriate, and at children’s instructional level. When introducing a skill, providing practice, or reviewing concepts, provide kids with a variety of engaging activities. High-interest activities that kids can achieve success with will promote learning.

Learning Styles

There are different ways to learn including auditory, which is hearing information, and visual, which is seeing the information. There is also a kinesthetic learning style, which is engaging in hands-on experiences. Lastly, concepts and skills can be learned through reading and writing. Most people, including kids, have a preference for how they learn best. It may be one learning style or it may be multiple. Helping children understand how they learn can be incredibly helpful. Once they have identified their preferences, they can use their learning style to tap into their strengths. This will continue to be valuable throughout their school career and beyond.

Everyday Learning

Encourage learning by tapping into the many everyday things that occur and provide kids with experiences. Learning happens when they’re setting the table, sorting laundry, or adding items to the grocery list. It also occurs when you sing and read together. There is learning happening when the family plays a board game or a card game. Visit the zoo, an aquarium, or a museum. Take advantage of seemingly simple everyday activities that encourage learning.

Setting an Example

Be a role model when it comes to learning. Kids need to see that learning isn’t just something you do while you’re in school and that it continues throughout life. They also need to see that learning isn’t always easy, everyone makes mistakes, and sometimes we have to really persevere to accomplish something. Let your kids see you doing your own taxes for the first time, learning a new computer program, or reading a non-fiction book about a topic that interests you. Show them what you’re passionate about, like cooking, running, or writing. Demonstrate how you greet learning with a positive attitude and a growth mindset.

Exploring Interests

Encourage children to explore areas that interest them. They may identify topics on their own or they may need exposure to different activities in order to discover the ones they really love. Kids may find that they love learning about dinosaurs, playing soccer, painting, riding horses, or playing the piano. All of these activities, and more, will help them develop new skills and encourage a love of learning.

Listening

A simple and fantastic way to encourage children to learn is by listening to them. Kids can be very inquisitive. Take advantage of their natural curiosity. Let them ask questions, provide them with answers when you know them, and research together when you don’t have all the answers. Encourage kids to express their opinions and let them know their opinions are valid. Teach them to explore different perspectives and to confirm and deny wonderings.

Celebrating Achievements

Offer positive reinforcement to celebrate your children’s successes, including the everyday ones. Praise doesn’t need to be limited to scoring the winning goal or getting perfect on a test. Let kids know that you’re proud of them when they persevere on a challenging task, help out a sibling or friend, or try a new activity. It’s also important to let them know you’re there to help when they have questions or just can’t get something right the first few times. Surrounding children with support and encouragement helps them develop a positive attitude toward learning.

Why Parents Must Play an Active Role in Their Child’s Education

August 18, 2021 by dadofdivas 1 Comment

A child’s education isn’t a school’s sole responsibility. For a child to flourish academically, they will need help and support from their teachers and parents.

If your daughter or son is falling behind in class or struggles to grasp difficult concepts, you might need to encourage learning in your own home. Find out why parents must play an active role in their child’s education.

Better Academic Outcomes

According to a study by the Michigan Department of Education, a student is more likely to earn better grades and test scores if their parents are involved in their education. It can lead to improved academic outcomes and much higher graduation rates.

Also, the same study found that parental involvement will help students produce a higher quality of work and set realistic goals for the future. Yet, students whose parents aren’t involved in their education are more likely to drop out of school.

Improved Behavior

Almost every teacher will struggle with disruptive behavior in the classroom at some point. For this reason, many educators will introduce an effective classroom management strategy to restore order and help students reach their potential.

However, a teacher can only try so much in the classroom, as it is also a parent’s responsibility to help their children become more engaged and respectful at school and home. Parents must take the time to help children develop a respect and appreciation for education. By doing so, they will be more likely to listen to their teacher and engage in a lesson plan.

How To Showcase The Importance Of Education To Your Kids

An Established Learning Structure

Parents are responsible for establishing a strict learning structure in the home. For example, they must schedule a specific time for a child to complete their homework or read a book each evening. If a parent makes learning a priority, a child will soon understand the importance of education. Encourage your child to fall in love with learning by creating a designated study area or cozy reading space. This should be fairly easy to do, even with limited space.

Gardening will allow children to play in the dirt while learning how to eat right, and the process of photosynthesis while developing their bodies.

Extracurricular Education

The syllabus restricts most educators in the classroom. However, parents can improve a child’s education by embracing different topics and turning everyday activities into fun learning experiences.

For example, a child can learn about animals at a zoo, identify various insects during a walk in the park, or understand probability by playing age-appropriate card games. You can even talk to their teacher about the syllabus, which can help you choose activities or trips to support their education. For example, if your child is learning about a specific historical era, you can take a trip to a museum or visit a historic site to bring the topic to life.

Teachers’ skills and support can only stretch so far. If you want your child to secure top grades, pass tests with flying colors, and enter a high-paying career, you must play an active role in their education. Encourage them to embrace their passions and interests, aim to make learning fun, and set strict rules regarding homework and study time.

SONIC Drive-In Limeades for Learning Supporting Teachers Everywhere #Giveaway

October 12, 2019 by dadofdivas 5 Comments

SONIC Drive-In has started their annual Limeades for Learning Fall Voting campaign. SONIC is a longtime supporter of public school teachers through its philanthropic initiative Limeades for Learning®. During Fall Voting, Sept. 30-Oct. 27, fans will vote for teachers’ projects to determine how SONIC will donate $1 million throughout the month. The video below explains the program:

As someone that sits on a school board, and with someone that works in K-12 currently it is not a secret that public school teachers spend hundreds of their own dollars to buy supplies for their classrooms. To date, SONIC has donated more than $13.1 million to public school teachers, supporting nearly 1 million students. During the four-week period of Fall Voting, anyone can vote to make a difference and positively impact public schools in their communities, without spending a dime!

This program is so awesome, as it celebrates teachers while trying to find ways to raise money for teacher projects as well! How can you get into the action? Join in by voting. Monday, September 30 through Sunday, October 27, you can help public school teachers by voting for projects that inspire you. Through Fall Voting, SONIC puts its $1 million donation in the hands of SONIC fans, asking them to decide where the funds go by voting for teacher projects at LimeadesforLearning.com.

During the four-week voting period, the projects with the most votes at the end of each week will receive funding from SONIC. Projects that didn’t receive funding that week will have their votes carry over into the following weeks.

Anyone can join SONIC and make a huge difference for public school teachers simply by voting.

There are three ways to earn votes for teacher projects throughout the Fall Voting campaign

      • Vote once daily after signing up with a valid email address
      • Visit a SONIC Drive-In to get a bag sticker code worth two votes
      • Vote ten times to receive three extra votes via email
    • Here’s a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/EOECnwLWLNU

Through Limeades for Learning, in partnership with DonorsChoose.org SONIC has donated more than $13.1 million, providing learning materials and teaching resources to impact nearly one million students.

I have had my share at working to fund projects for teachers. I know that public education is limited but I don’t feel that teachers should have to pay for these items for their classroom out of their own pockets. Thus, I am happy that teachers can submit their wants into a site like this to get funding. The latest one I supported was for our music teacher as he was looking to get new drums for the band and I helped out through DonorsChoose.org. Have you ever looked to see whether you have any teachers looking for items that you can support?

GIVEAWAY

I will be giving away a $100 DonorsChoose.org gift card and $25 SONIC gift card giveaway to a lucky winner.

5 Reasons Online Learning Might Be Better Than Traditional Learning

September 18, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Traditional learning in a classroom, perhaps with a book, will always have its benefits. However, online learning is becoming more popular, and some suspect that it might be better than traditional learning. Of course this can depend on many different factors, such as what type of learner you are and what you prefer personally. However, here we’re going to take a look at why online learning might be better than traditional learning.

Read on if you want to get an idea of whether online learning could be right for you:

5 Reasons Online Learning Might Be Better Than Traditional Learning

Photo by Roman Koval from PEXELS

1. Take Your Course Anywhere In The World

Providing you have a computer and an internet connection, you can take a course anywhere in the world. Online learning is usually focused on learning at your own pace, so this means you could make your way through the material anywhere. You could do it on your commute, or even while you’re on a break if you feel like it! There aren’t any limitations to where you can do your course.

2. You Can Learn Pretty Much Anything You Want

You can find all manner of courses online, whether you want a degree in physiology or astrology. You can also find compliance training solutions and pretty much anything else that relates to what you want to do in an instant. You may not be able to find the ideal course for you at your chosen learning institution, or one that is close enough to you, so being able to find the right one online is fantastic.

3. Learn At Your Own Pace

When you head to a traditional learning institution for your chosen course, you will not usually be able to learn at your own pace. Learning will be a set pace that everybody in the class must follow, whether they feel comfortable doing this or not. Some people will be faster learners and fly through the course material, while others will need to take their time in order to get the most out of the course. Learning online means you don’t have to worry about being too fast or too slow.

4. Less Of A Time Investment

With traditional learning, time getting to and from classes, as well as other time constraints mean that it’s a huge time investment. Online learning does not require much of a time investment from you. It’s up to you whether you’d like to spend a few hours learning every few days, or a much smaller amount of time every day. You get to control your schedule.

5. Online Learning Is Better For The Environment

As you don’t have to travel with online learning, it’s a better option for the environment. Studies have found that online courses equate to an average of 90% less energy and 85% fewer CO2 emissions per student than traditional in person courses.

It’s also worth noting that the retention rates are higher with online learning. If you think that you’ll do well on a course where you get to control your schedule and you don’t have to travel, online learning could be the best thing you do!

Cheap Upgrades For A Better You

July 31, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Cheap Upgrades For A Better You

In today’s modern society, so full of daily tasks and obligations, it can be difficult to find some time to truly focus on you. Balancing work, family life, and other daily commitments can be a struggle, and self well-being often takes a back seat. However, it is important that everyone takes some time to focus on ways to improve themselves – whether this is through fitness, professional training, or supporting those less fortunate in the community. With this in mind, here are some affordable ways to create a better you.

Invest in a gym membership

Becoming more active and adopting healthy habits is a great way to improve your confidence and self-image. Research has found that physical activity releases serotonin, which is the ‘feel good’ chemical that creates feelings of happiness. Hitting the gym at the end of a busy day in the office, can, therefore, be an effective way to de-stress and boost your mood. The first step to becoming healthier is to create some realistic fitness goals based on what you want to achieve – this could be to lose a few pounds, gain muscle mass, or increase stamina. Set your fitness goals early and have a clear plan in place to achieve them.

Fortunately, there are plenty of quality fitness centers offering great sign up deals and affordable gym memberships, so developing an effective workout routine doesn’t have to be expensive. Remember that it takes time for exercise to have a physical effect on your body, so you won’t see results instantly. Make sure you are consistent with your exercise efforts, remain positive, and continue working towards your fitness goals.

Take advantage of training opportunities

Completing professional qualifications and training has a number of benefits. This includes – improving your skills and knowledge, increasing job satisfaction, enhancing your employability, and increasing your chances of being offered a promotion with your current employer. What’s more, your employer may even offer to fund certain training courses, if you demonstrate the benefits it could have on their business. If you cannot receive funding, then don’t worry! There is a huge range of affordable courses online that will instantly boost your skills and qualifications.

In today’s modern businesses, things are constantly evolving. For that reason, it is important to take advantage of any training opportunities on offer and be proactive when it comes to your professional development. This will ensure that your skills are up to date, so you can perform at the highest level possible, which in turn, should improve how satisfied you are in your job role. There are hundreds of qualifications and courses out there to enhance a career in pretty much any industry, so make sure you do your research and find any courses that could benefit your career. Click here for information on some of the most popular professional development courses on offer now.

Learn a new language

Learning a new language is a fantastic way to improve your skills and broaden your knowledge of a new country and culture. One of the biggest benefits of learning a new language is having the ability to interact and connect with people all around the world in a meaningful way. Lead with Languages explain how – “Bilinguals have the unique opportunity to communicate with a wider range of people in their personal and professional lives.” Knowing the language means you can instantly connect with local people when you travel. This will help you develop a richer understanding of the culture and local customs, which will improve your travel experiences.

Learning a new language can also help with career advancement. Many businesses now trade with organizations abroad, so translation skills are in high demand. Being bilingual is an impressive skill that is highly regarded by employers across all industries. Demonstrating the commitment to learn a second language is a fantastic way to set yourself apart from your peers and put yourself ahead of the competition. Language skills can also help you negotiate higher salaries and other benefits when applying for new jobs. The best thing about learning a new language is that it doesn’t have to be expensive. There are plenty of affordable online language courses and apps that you can download, then learn from home in your spare time. The most popular language apps include – Humble Bundle, Babbel, Udemy, and Rosetta Rose.

Support others with volunteer work

Helping others is probably the first thing that comes to mind when people are looking for ways to become a better person. Sacrificing some of your spare time to help others will cost you nothing, and can have a significant effect on your own mental well-being. Research has found that helping others can be an effective way to boost mood, reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, and improve self-esteem.

In today’s busy society, many people feel too stressed and busy worrying about their own problems, that they don’t consider the issues faced by other people. Expanding your ability to focus on the needs of others and supporting those less fortunate will help you to truly appreciate the positive things in your life and become less affected by minor daily stresses. Many argue that altruism, i.e., helping others, is a reward in itself. Here are some great ideas for ways that you can support people in your community:

  • Do random acts of kindness, for example, helping an elderly person carry their shopping to the car.
  • Get involved as a volunteer for a local charity like an animal shelter or care home
  • Arrange sponsored activities to raise money.
  • Offer mentoring services to people in educational or criminal settings.
  • Organize a local community clean up.
  • Become a regular blood donor.

Final thought

As you can see, there are plenty of great affordable (and free) ways to improve yourself. Not only will this help make you a better person, but it can also improve your job satisfaction and career prospects, and make you a happier, healthier person overall. Give some of these ideas a go and see the amazing effects they can have on your mental and physical well being.

How To Showcase The Importance Of Education To Your Kids

February 27, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

How To Showcase The Importance Of Education To Your Kids

It’s a scene familiar to parents up and down the country.

Cue dad, knocking on child’s door in the morning.

“Get up; it’s almost time for school.”

No answer.

“YOU WILL BE LATE FOR SCHOOL!!!”

No answer.

One final knock, probably loud enough to wake the elderly neighbors next door.

With a moan and a groan, the child then emerges from their room. It’s not the promise of going to school that has got them out of bed, but rather the persistence of their human alarm clock of a parent.

Enthusiasm for school is clearly not on the child’s personal curriculum.

Do you identify with what we are saying?

For many children, the importance of education takes a back seat to another hour in bed or the desire to do something else with their day. But as the parent, it’s your responsibility to encourage them as much as possible. It’s your duty to showcase the importance of education.

But how?

Lead by example. Children look at their parents as role models, so you need to role model the importance of education in your life. For starters, you might explain your own career path to your kids, letting them know how education got you to where you are now. You might actively pursue education, taking courses such as these online rn to bsn programs to show your children that education can be useful for advancing in a career. And should you take on any extra courses, you might work on them diligently in an effort to role model the importance of working hard in any given subject.

Get excited about your children’s education. Find out what your children are doing at school. Talk to them about the subjects they are taking. Show enthusiasm for what they are learning. When out and about with your children, find opportunities to teach them real-world examples of the lessons they are learning at school. Look for ways to complement their learning through specific television programs and YouTube videos. And using these examples, get involved with your child’s school. If you can muster up excitement about what your child is doing, your enthusiasm might rub off on them.

Refer to real-life examples. What is your child’s dream career? Find out what they are interested in doing after finishing school or college, and then, as you help them navigate a route into their chosen career, highlight real-life examples of people who have gone before them. Find out what these people did to get to where they wanted to be, and assuming education played a part in this, with extra training, degree courses, etc., let your child know how education played a part in their success. Hopefully, your child will then be inspired to follow in these good examples.

Help your children. If your child struggles academically, find ways to help them. There will be resources online to help you but speak to your child’s teacher for advice as well. By taking time out of your schedule, and actively helping your child to succeed, you will further showcase the importance you place on education in their lives.

Your children will not always jump out of bed with boundless enthusiasm in the mornings. But if you can showcase the importance of education to them, they should make that effort to work harder in school, and whisper it, even do their homework of an evening! Let us know what you think, and if you have used particular resources or tactics to support your children with their learning, be sure to share your ideas with us.

5 Ways To Inspire Your Children To Love Learning

January 2, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

5 Ways To Inspire Your Children To Love Learning

What influences a child’s willingness to learn? Are some kids just born loving books and others less so? Is it down to individual personalities? Well, although there are certainly different aptitudes at play, the truth is that every child can love learning – provided it’s approached in the right way. Learning should never just be limited to a classroom environment either – in fact, social, academic and intellectual growth often flourishes the most outside of the formal instructional environment. So, how can you steer a child onto the right path and inspire a lifelong love of learning?

Love To Read

Reading is a keystone habit that unlocks a lot of good in a person’s life, so teaching a child to truly love books for their own sake is a huge gift to give. A child must understand that reading equals more than just book learning. And whether it’s learning their words almost by accident as they read a favorite bedtime story or being able to critically analyse a key text while studying, reading brings benefits from a richer vocabulary to better communication skills. Having a child that is read to frequently and is part of a family where everyone reads instills a love of learning which will see them through life – from passing exams at school to searching rn to bsn online, they will pursue the learning they love in life.

Encourage Open Communication

Education should not be a passive act that is done to your child – you need to make sure they are engaged in the process. Create an atmosphere where it’s okay for children to express their preferences and opinions. Hard as it may be not to discount any worries which seem trivial from an adult perspective, if kids pick up that their views don’t matter they are likely to become disengaged.

Keep Track Of Their Interests

Use a child’s interests to make whatever they are learning relevant to them. This achieves the aim of making learning fun in a natural way. Whenever you find a subject that gets their creativity involved then pursue it – ask them questions, get them to find out any relevant information, give them books on the topic. Encourage them to persevere when things get a little tough as well – they will soon see how it pays off.

Find Their Learning Style

Each of us has a set of preferences about the way in which we learn. Discovering your child’s learning style can have a transformative effect on how much they enjoy learning. Some may be primarily visual learners, some aural or verbal – others social, logical or solitary learners. Still others may be a mix of these styles. Using techniques that work best for your child will result in a feeling that something is ‘clicking’ and learning. becomes a better experience. Explore different methods with young children to see which they respond to.

Show Your Enthusiasm

The best teacher is one who is engaged and passionate in the topic, so it’s important to show your children what you are interested in and like learning about yourself. Share the joy of discovering new information with your little ones. Let them see what you love learning about by visiting exhibitions, historical sites or planning family days out to places of interest. When your child sees how excited you are by learning, so they will begin to discover their own passion for knowledge. This will spark a lifelong connection with it that will help them as they go on to formal study but also keep their minds inquiring and active in everyday life as well.

  • Game Instructions

My Take on the Game

This game really challenges you and your child to start to learn their capitols and States. The game is also easy enough for someone that does not know their capitols and States. This sequence game also allows you people that do not know their States or capitols to look for States that have similar sizes. My daughter at first did not know all of her States and capitols when we started but this Sequence game really allowed you her to learn them quickly. This is definitely a family friendly game and you will love to play this with your own kids!

With the Jimu Robot BuilderBots Kit – build, program and code two robots

September 12, 2017 by dadofdivas 2 Comments

Jimu builderbot

The Jimu Robot BuilderBots Kit is an interactive robotic building block system for kids and comes with everything they need to easily build, program and code two robots: GrabberBot and DigBot, or invent their own robot creation. Both robots run on treads while an infrared sensor allows them to detect objects to pick up or move around. Additionally, LED lights allow the robots to move in the dark and express emotions.

Jimu Robot BuilderBots Kit

The Jimu Robots BuilderBots Kit serves as an entry point for kids to learn about robotics and how to code, outfitting them with the tools necessary to learn and/or maintain STEM skills that will propel them into their academic and life goals.

Jimu Robot BuilderBots Kit

With STEM knowledge becoming more important than ever, UBTECH is combining education and entertainment to build and stimulate interest in STEM learning with its’ Jimu Robots BuilderBots Kit and other kits.

Jimu Robot BuilderBots Kit

My Take on the Jimu Robot BuilderBots Kit

We were excited to build this kit. You might remember that we built a Jimu robot in the past and we had a blast doing this, but even more fun was programming our Robot and teaching my daughters how to do this. This is the magic of Jimu, as it not only allows you to build cool things but it allows you to learn while doing it as well!

In this kit you can build one of two robots, a Grabberbot or a DigBot. The kit is made for ages 8 and up, though I think someone a little younger might be able to help while you build it with them. This kit is a little different as it comes with an Infrared sensor, which is ultra cool! The kit has over 357 parts though not all of the parts are used on one robot. However, you do have a lot of parts that would allow you to make your own robot too.

Like our last kit, this kit also makes you use the Jimu app that will make you choose what robot you are building so you can eventually control that robot. The instructions that you get through the app are very easy to follow and I love that you can control the parts through your phone or tablet to get different views of the parts as this allows you to see how the parts will intersect with the unit in different angles. As you are building you are also learning about how the servos will control your robot.

It takes about 30-45 minutes to build depending your skill. We built the Grabberbot and after we got everything built this allows you to do some very cool things, moving the Jimu Grabberbot was easy and filled with fun sound effects this Grabberbot can actually grab and control lighter objects too.

As I said in my first review, I was very impressed with the Jimu Grabberbot and I know that you will be also. This is a kit that continues to entertain and we definitely learned in the process as well. I highly encourage you to pick up this great kit today for your own family!
