Smart Ways to Save Money for Your Children

April 30, 2018 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

As fathers, it’s no secret that having children can be expensive. In fact, data shows that it costs a little over $233,000 to raise a child until they reach the age of 17. To make matters worse, our wages and incomes are remaining stagnant while costs of living and rates of inflation are on the rise. For today’s families, this news is disheartening, especially when we have to work extra hours to make ends meet or put aside money for our children. Thankfully, it’s not all doom and gloom. We can find smart ways to save money for our kids and become more financially secure with some creative thinking and planning.

Smart Ways to Save Money for Your Children

Please scroll through the following tips to save money for our children and help balance our budgets in the process:

Make saving a priority.

It might sound a little selfish, but pay yourself first. Yes, before paying the bills or heading to the store you should deposit money into your savings account- even if it is only $10 or $15.  This practice will keep us from overspending and ensure that we are setting money aside to save.

Cut the cable or satellite.

Avoid this costly bill every month by accessing numerous shows and movies online or subscribe to a cheaper streaming service to save money. If you are a member of Amazon Prime, you already have access to their Prime video service. Head to the local library to borrow materials for free! If ditching television service isn’t realistic, call your provider and look into discounts they offer.

Avoid playing the name game with brands.

An easy way to cut your grocery and clothing budget is to ditch the name brands. Purchase generic or store brands when available and soon you will be able to notice a huge difference in your spending. Use the savings to invest or open a savings account for the kids.

Start investing in a college fund today- not later.

Whether your daughter starts college in two years or sixteen, start saving today. Time is our best friend when it comes to this major life expense and every little bit will help and prevent our kids from having to take out more student loans. Make it a priority to start a college savings account today, so over the years they can build interest.

Diversify your savings and investments.

We have all heard the saying, “don’t put all your eggs in one basket”. Take this timeless advice and smartly save money for our children with savings bonds, buying diamonds or gold, investing in real estate, buying stock in the market, and starting a traditional savings account to diversify investing. This strategy gives us several different ways to expand our income and offers a safety net if one of the sects isn’t performing well.

Limit the “stuff” in your home.

A relatively easy way to save a little cash for our kids is simply cutting back on the amount of toys, games, clothing, or nicknacks we buy our daughters. Our children really don’t need to have every new toy that hits the shelf. Only purchase these items when needed or for special events like birthdays or holidays.

Buy used when possible.

Kids grow like weeds and are constantly needing new clothing or sporting equipment. When possible, buy used baby gear, clothes, equipment, or toys. Check out garage sales, online used selling sites, or consignment stores before heading to the store to buy everything new. Often, children’s items don’t get worn out and you can find quality items that are gently worn.

Smart Ways to Save Money for Your Children

Host a garage sale.

Make a little money by cleaning house and sell outgrown or unused items. You can use these profits to start an emergency fund or pad your nest egg. You might be surprised how much cash you can raise from stuff that has just been collecting dust in your garage or basement.

Say goodbye to debt and fees.

Pay down your debt and loans to save money spent on interest and fees. In addition, pay your bills by the due dates and consider signing up for recurring monthly payments to avoid late fees. If making a payment is impossible, don’t wait. Make a call to the company to talk about arranging a solution to prevent penalties or higher interest rates.

Cutback on extracurricular activities.

Allow a child to join only a couple of sports or clubs. This tactic provides two benefits: your daughter will gain some much needed downtime and save you a lot of money.

Bring back homemade meals.

Avoid eating out and eat at home to save money. Try meal planning and food prepping on the weekend to avoid the nightly struggle of figuring out what to serve and to avoid waiting in long take-out lines or unhealthy options.

6 Great Camping Ideas for Kids

6 Great Camping Ideas for Kids

Camping can be fun for all the family, yet there are times when your kids will be bored with the regular activities that go along with camping. No matter if you are experienced or reading on camping for beginners, there are plenty of activities to keep your days full.

To keep them more entertained without falling back on any electrical gadgets we have given 6 of the top things you can incorporate into your camping vacation. One thing that might have a bearing on the activities you can do is your site location, and you might find that there are much more you can do apart from what is listed here:

Scavenger Hunts

Younger children love hunting for things, so a scavenger hunt is an excellent way of getting them rummaging through the undergrowth. When you have your players, ask them to collect pine cones, and leaves from trees, snail shells or pine needles and rocks.

A good variation of this is a photo scavenger hunt. If you have cheap cameras for everyone to use (or cell phones with camera), they can find the things you have listed and shoot a photo of them with the item or the location you have stated.

If you have a checklist, a small clipboard and pencils come in hand with a small bag to store the found items. The losing team has the duty of doing the dishes and toasting the marshmallows.

Camping Olympics

This might encourage some of the other campers to join in, and it might be one of the most enjoyable events you can have. If you are close to the beach or a lake you can have the long jump, swimming events and then a tug of war to top the day off. That is if you have access to a large rope. You can even go away from serious and have the three-legged race or an egg an spoon race.

Nature Trails

This might be of more interest to the younger ones in the family. If you pack away a guidebook that covers all the things you might find on your trecks around the campsite. Your children can log all the stuff they see on their travels.

As they say, when you’re in the middle of nature, you become curious about nature. There are lots of ways your children can keep mementoes of this rather than ticking in a book. They can do pencil rubbings of anything with a rough surface. Get them to place some paper over the top of the item and rub gently with their pencil or crayon

GeoCaching

This is a step up from a scavenger hunt as it is like searching for buried treasure. It used to be the case you could only do it with dedicated GPS systems, yet many mobile phones are coming with this capability.

All you have to do is register at a Geocaching website, and then you can get the locations of the items that have been geotagged. These little secret caches have been hidden all around the globe, so there’s a good chance you will find some close to your campsite. The treasures are typically stored in small containers; with a means of recording who discovered it. All you have to do is sign the log and replace the little trinket with one of your own and put it back for the next person to find.

Canoeing or Kayaking

If your site is close to water, you can take a trip with your kids in a kayak or a canoe. Many places rent these for a specified amount of time. All you need to be aware of is that your child is large enough and they are fully secured to their life vest.

Most canoes are large enough to fit more than one person, and there are tandem kayak’s that allow two people to ride together. This could also be an excellent opportunity to do some fishing and catch the dinner for later. There’s nothing better than grilling a fish on an open fire.

Songs and Stories

Once nighttime falls, many of these activities are not possible. Once you get those marshmallows roasting, there is no better way than telling spooky stories or having a good old singalong while you’re waiting for your mallow to be cooked.

Younger kids might not be too keen on a ghost story, so you might have to apply for a little poetic license and tame the thrills down a little.

Once the day is over, and you have completed a few of these mentioned activities. It won’t be long before your kids forget about their electronic gadgets, and the younger ones will be sleeping like logs after a hard day treasure hunting.

Getting Your Kids to Go to Sleep and Stay Asleep

June 30, 2017 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Getting Your Kids to Go to Sleep and Stay Asleep

Getting Your Kids to Go to Sleep and Stay Asleep

Kids will always fight against their bedtimes. This is simply how kids work. Even when everybody else can tell that the child is exhausted to the infinite power, that child will insist that they are, in fact, wide awake. Usually while screaming. And maybe crying. It can be frustrating to deal with as a parent until you take a step back and realize that, even as an adult, you often fight against bedtime in your own procrastination-based ways too.

Even if you can get your kids to bed relatively easily, getting them to stay in bed or to actually fall asleep and then stay asleep is its own battle. Here are some tips to help your kids have an easier time dealing with bedtime and staying asleep (you could probably use some of them in your own bedtime routine as well):

It Starts With the Bed

It Starts With the Bed

Like the experts at Moonlight Slumber point out, the bed is where your babies (and older kids) (and you!) spend most of their time. People spend more time in and on their beds than they do any other single piece of furniture that they will own in their lifetimes. It is worth the extra expense to opt for the highest quality mattress possible. Trying to get by with a cheap (or worse, used) mattress is setting everybody up for failure. To get a good night’s sleep the mattress must be as comfortable and as supportive as possible. If the bed itself is uncomfortable, after all, what incentive is there to stay in it?

Monitor-technology

Put Away the Screens

The problem with screens isn’t necessarily their content. Watching a show or a movie right before bed is always a bad idea, even if that show or movie is the most soothing thing you’ve ever experienced. The problem with screens is that they emit more blue light than they do natural light. Blue light has an adverse effect on our body’s ability to produce melatonin, the hormone we need to induce sleep. Smartphone, tablet and even television screens emit a lot of blue light which is why it’s good to turn them off at least a couple of hours before bedtime–even for your kids.

Bedtime Routine

Bedtime Routine

Speaking of before bed, having a standard and unwavering bedtime routine is important. Children crave and respond positively to stability. It helps them relax and feel safe and secure. Even if they try to evade your efforts to get them into pajamas or to take a bath, over time their bodies will learn that this specific routine means it is almost time to go to sleep–even if their brains and emotions beg them to stay awake.

A good bedtime routine for children should start right after dinner. A bath is a good idea here, especially if your kids are messy eaters. A nice warm bath helps their muscles relax and can help them calm down after stressful days. After bedtime, you can have family or play time but make sure those previously mentioned screens get shut off at least an hour before your kids actually have to get in bed.

dad reading with son

Snuggle Time

Spending some time–even if it is just a few minutes–with your child after he or she has climbed into bed also has a calming effect on the child. You can increase this effect by reading to your young ones for a little while. Science has proven that children who are read to regularly are more likely to do well in school and enjoy reading themselves. Have your child lie down while you read to him or her to encourage sleeping even more.

For older tiny humans, fear of the dark and of shadows can be a real deterrent for sleep. A nightlight can help with this, as can staying in the room with them for a few minutes after you’ve turned off the lights while their bodies settle in for sleeping.

These suggestions might not solve all of your bedtime issues, but trust us, they help a lot! Did we miss anything? What’s your best tip for helping your kids sleep through the night?

The Most Important First Lessons For Kids

June 6, 2017 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

The Most Important First Lessons For Kids

The Most Important First Lessons For Kids

When we think of our role as parents, we all know we need to do more than just provide food, clothing, and shelter. Indeed, one of the things we pride ourselves on as parents is when we’ve taught our kids important life lessons that will serve them well as they grow up.

From the time our kids are old enough to understand, we are teaching them–intentionally or unintentionally. With our words and our actions, we are showing them what we think is the best way to live life.

As we think about the deliberate lessons we should share with our kids, we can frame things up in a few key areas that will benefit them the most. Stick with age-appropriate topics within these major topics:

Home Safety

Personal Security

There is probably no more fundamental childhood lesson than “Don’t talk to strangers”. It is an easy point to emphasize with kids, especially since they already have a reluctance to interact with people they don’t know.

But strangers are found in many different ways these days. It’s no longer just the smiling man driving up to ask for directions. Strangers now can show up on social media, chat rooms, and even email, often portraying themselves as someone the child would have no reason to fear.

It can be intimidating to think of all the new ways there are for predators to approach our children. The good news is that there are also new ways to protect them. Kids who grew up in the ’60s and ’70s didn’t have access to protection like Black Hat Security, which can thoroughly fortify the home physically. They didn’t have the safeguards of apps that monitor their interaction with people outside the home. So while the threat has evolved, the options to address it have evolved as well.

Healthy-Living-Time-To-Exercise

Healthy Lifestyle

Lessons on safety are usually best taught overtly, with direct lessons to your kids about what to do and what not to do. But other lessons are usually most effectively shared by example, and choices about a healthy lifestyle are a good example.

Kids learn a lot by imitation. If their parents and older siblings do things a certain way, they’re likely to follow suit. So if they see Mom and Dad smoking, eating a poor diet, and not getting enough exercise, they will do the same. Indeed, kids have no choice but to eat junk food when that’s what their families buy, and even if they don’t take up smoking themselves, their parents’ tobacco use can affect their health as well.

So while it does help your kids’ health to tell them what to do, it’s definitely more important to live a healthy lifestyle yourself. Not only will your kids learn how to take care of themselves, they’ll also get to have more years with healthy, active parents.

Whether you are a student or a parent, chances are you have lost sleep over the cost of higher education.

Smart Finances

We tend to think of money as a lesson for older kids, but the fact is that the sooner kids understand the value of money, the sooner they’ll develop sustainable habits for themselves.

It’s true that the more complex lessons are best saved for the teenage years, but we can teach things to our youngest kids that will help them throughout life. Very young kids can understand the idea of interest, both paid and earned. They need to know that a credit card is a way to spend money conveniently, but that it’s a very expensive tool if it’s not paid off immediately.

They need to know about saving. Show them that when you have to make large expenditures, you’re able to do so because you’ve been setting money aside. And show them that you have to spend some money; it does no good to teach them to fill the piggy bank without ever teaching them how to spend wisely from what they’ve accumulated. They’ll learn to differentiate between wants and needs, and they’ll learn the value of saving by feeling the impact of spending.

Our role as teachers to our kids is critical. We don’t need to wait until they reach a certain age. They are always learning from us, and it’s our job to make sure they are learning the right things.

Get Fit with Your Kids! 10 Tips on How to Workout while Having Fun

Get Fit with Your Kids! 10 Tips on How to Workout while Having Fun

Get Fit with Your Kids! 10 Tips on How to Workout while Having Fun

A lot of people feel as though they no longer have time to workout, keeping themselves in shape once they settle down and begin raising a family, but this actually isn’t true. In fact, having children can provide you with even more opportunities to workout than you may have had beforehand! Finding ways to keep fit can also slow down the aging process, and help you keep up with your kids as they grow. If you don’t believe us, just check out some of these innovative and engaging ways to keep your body in shape while also spending quality time with your little loved ones. This is fun family fitness for parents who are serious about achieving their goals.

Have a Dance Party Workout!

You may not realize how many calories it’s possible to burn by dancing, so let us blow your minds with a fun fact: a single hour of dancing can burn over 400 calories. Find some music that your kids like, and encourage them to shake it with you for a fun workout! You can have fun making up your own moves, get into dance-offs, try call-and-response challenges and more—anything to keep moving with the beat.

Jump Rope

The jump rope is one of the simplest toys ever invented, but it allows you to play a near limitless number of different games with your kids—and almost all of them are a serious cardio exercise workout. By some estimates, it’s possible to burn over 10 calories a minute while jumping rope—and it also tones your arms and legs.

Teach them a Sport

Getting your youngster interested in football, baseball or another outdoor sport is more than just a way to work out with them now—it’s also a way to get them interested in activities that could keep them active for the rest of their lives. If you have a park or a field near your house, grab a ball and go teach your kid some of the greatest games ever played.

Do Burpees

Burpees are an excellent cardio workout, and they’re also a way to give small children a quick lesson in sequences and pattern recognition. Basically, you start in a squat, jump into a plank, do a pushup, then bring your feet back to your hands and finish with a jumping jack. It’s lots of fun for them—and a real workout for you!

Take Walks with the Family Pet

If you have a dog (or any other animal that can walk on a leash, for that matter), then encourage your child to walk them with you. Even low impact cardio like walking can be a great way to prevent obesity and keep your heart healthy—plus, it’ll give you all some quality bonding time.

Have Fun with Hula Hoops!

Hula hoops have endured decades and decades of different trends in both toys and exercise, mostly because they’re excellent examples of both. Perfect for rain, shine, or even snow, hula hoops offer the potential of an intense cardio workout that feels just like playtime for your children. If you’re looking for a way to work out specific muscles, you can even find specific guides and instructions online.

Practice Yoga

Yoga is a wonderful way to stretch the muscles in your body while also relieving stress, and if you can get your kids to practice with you it’s an excellent strategy for calming them down. Help your children find inner peace now, and who knows how many future tantrums you could prevent?

Garden Together

Gardening isn’t a chore—it’s a wonderful way to enjoy fresh air and get some exercise at the same time. A lot of little ones enjoy digging around in the dirt, and what better way to help them stay active than by giving them a useful task? Hook your kid up with a small shovel, and have them dig up the topsoil so you can plant seeds.

Get Fit with Your Kids! 10 Tips on How to Workout while Having Fun

Try An At-home Aerobics Workout

Find a fitness DVD and pop it in, then invite your kids to follow along with you for a family workout! This is a fun way to keep your little ones active while also letting them watch a bit of television, which should keep them entertained while you all burn a few calories together.

Play Make-Believe in the Airplane Position

While lying on your stomach, bring your arms out from your sides at right angles and slowly raise your legs off of the floor. In addition to being a great way to tone your core and rear, this is a lot of fun for little kids—what child doesn’t love pretending to be an airplane?

Whether you’re a mom trying to stay healthy or a dad who wants to keep his gym body, these exercises can help you keep the body you prize without sacrificing time with the people you love. Select your favorite from the list, or try them all and become a super-parent!

McAlister’s Says Have a Family Date Night This Valentine’s Day!

Every Valentine’s Day I love to be able to show my wife how much I love her (though I do this all throughout the year too), but I also love to be able to show my daughters that Valentine’s Day is not just for husbands and wives but for entire families.

We love to spend time together as a family, but as our kids get older, the time that we can spend together gets less and less as the kids and we become busier and busier as a family. Sometimes you have to pick things up and find the time to just reconnect and McAlister’s is doing just that.

mcalisters deli

On Tuesday, February 14,Valentine’s Day, McAlister’s is offering kids the opportunity to eat free with their parents or guardians, encouraging families to yet again reconnect on a #McAlistersDateNight . This for us is an amazing opportunity, as we love McAlister’s and I truly appreciate that they are promoting and encouraging  family time.

So instead of just taking your spouse outside I encourage you get out and have a family date night with your own family at McAlister’s. You can even enter to win a free family date night for a year at McAlister’s.  We went out on our own family date night at McAlister’s and of course my kids had a blast. My oldest always seems to get their grilled cheese as she says that it is the best grilled cheese she has ever had. My youngest usually chooses a baked potato and I would have to agree as their Ultimate Spud is simply amazing! Even outside of the great food though was the fact that we had the opportunity to really talk and connect without all of the hustle and bustle that we usually run into.

So take up the mantle and start reconnecting with your family on a family date night at McAlister’s. Remember to enter for a chance to win a free family date night for a year.

JCPenney Lets My Kids Dress Me This Fathers Day #Ad

June 16, 2015 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

JCPenney
 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

Looking good is something that I love to do, but sometimes this is not always easy, whether it be in regards to money, time or the like. That being said, JCPenney recently asked me to have some fun with my kids and allow them to be able to make me look good through their #JCPStyleByMyKid Fathers Day program.

Now, letting them do this, opened up pandora’s box. You see, both my girls are very different in their styles and approaches. I have one daughter that is all about fitness and sports and thus she was thinking of making me be decked out in designer Nike apparel or something else like this, while my youngest is more about professional or semi-professional dress because she knows that I wear this more often.

So to be honest I had no clue what the girls would pick out for me, but I decided to keep my mouth shut and simply let them have fun. What was great was that not only did I have the giftcard that was sent to me, but JCPenney also had some great coupons and percent off coupons that could be used too to save even more money.

It had been a while since I had been to JCPenney and I came to find that they had a very large variety of items that ranged from fitness to dress clothes, accessories, shoes and more.

The girls had me try on shorts, pants, shorts, hats, a little bit of everything. The process was a ton of fun and the girls thought it was exciting to be able to have me in clothes that they picked out themselves. I think they just wish they had more money, but to be honest, even with the money that we did have ($50), with the coupons that we used, I ended up being able to get about 7 total items which was simply an amazing value altogether!

This was a very exciting program and one that, even if you do not have a giftcard, that I encourage you to try out with your own kids. You might be interested to see their impression of style of you through their selections as I was!

Giveaway

To help with this JCPenney is giving one of my readers a $50 Giftcard to JCPenney for yourself or for your family! All you need to do is fill out the below form to be entered.  The contest will run for one week and will end on June 23, 2015.

The Secret Millionaires Club Imparts Entrepreneurial Skills!

April 3, 2015 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

Did you know that April is “National Financial Literacy Month” and a great opportunity to put teaching children of all ages about the basics of finance at the top of the list!

Teaching financial literacy to kids at a young age is a priority for famed investor and philanthropist, Warren Buffett.  To make learning fun, Mr. Buffett became an animated character in his own animated series, Warren Buffett’s Secret Millionaires Club, lending his image and voice to the television series created by Genius Brands International that offers tips to kids on practical money management.

As Mr. Buffett said in a Forbes interview, “It’s never too early to help kids understand about money. Whether it’s understanding the cost of the new toy they want, or the value of saving money. Kids are exposed to money matters from a very young age, so why not help them understand it and develop healthy habits early on?”

Produced for kids 6–11, Secret Millionaires Club engages kids with basic lessons in business and imparts healthy habits from an early age. In the series, Warren Buffett is a mentor to a group of kids, helping them learn about the “business of life” through a series of adventures. Every episode offers valuable life lessons, and as Mr. Buffett reminds the kids at the end of every episode, “the best investment you can make is an investment in yourself!”

Secret-Millionaires-Club

Mr. Buffett’s celebrity friends appear as special guests in episodes of Secret Millionaires Club, including Jay Z, Bill Gates, Shaquille O’Neal, Gisele Bündchen, Kelly Rowland, Nick Cannon and others who impart their own positive lessons.

“Given the current state of the economy, it is imperative that parents begin teaching their kids about financial responsibility at a young age, and the Secret Millionaires Club provides an entertainment platform for parents and children to participate and learn together in a fun and safe environment.”

Mr. Warren Buffett

There are many ways to learn and enjoy Secret Millionaires Club with your children:

Chapters include, “Don’t Be Afraid to Make Mistakes;” “Love What You Do;” “Protect Your Reputation;” “If You Fail, Try Again;” Confidence Comes With Understanding,” and many other lessons from Mr. Buffett, which he credits for his own success in life.

Now, classrooms, homes, and learning settings across the country can benefit from the knowledge of this financial guru and his fictional friends!

And sponsored by Fairhome Foundation is the annual Secret Millionaires Club “Grow Your Own Business Challenge, ” currently it its 4th year.  The contest encourages kids to put the lessons learned from Secret Millionaires Club to practical use by applying what they’ve learned to come up with their own original business ideas. More than 100,000 classrooms and youth organizations nationwide have taken advantage of the free tools and lessons for teaching good financial habits to youth. Finalists will present their ideas to Warren Buffett and a panel of judges during a private lunch in Omaha in May 2015. Each individual and group winner will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship. Planning a day at the beach with kids

Summer is just around the corner and nothing is more fun for the whole family than a day at the beach with kids. If you live close to a beach, a staycation is a great vacation idea for families. It’s a great way to have fun and save money.

A beach staycation can mean more than just swimming. There are many fun things to do at the beach, from boating to beach volleyball.

There are a few things to keep in mind when you plan a trip to the beach, including comfort, safety and fun. Yes, it’s true, the beach isn’t just about fun, but if you go prepared you can make sure the whole time is a fun experience and a memorable one.

Comfort

Comfort is important for a trip to the beach because you want to make sure you have a chance to relax and enjoy the sun and sand. That means having the right towels, the right wardrobe and even the right chair. Make sure that bathing suites fit, and stay in place, before heading out. This will help avoid any embarrassing moments. Make sure to bring sandals, sunglasses, a beach hat and even a change of clothes if necessary.

The right seating is important too. While it might be fun to sit in the sand, why not bring along heavy duty chairs from Beach Mall. A comfortable chair that can stand up the the beach and climbing kids is definitely a must have for the perfect beach vacation.

beach

Safety

If you have young children that don’t know how to swim well, make sure to bring flotation devices. It also helps to choose a beach that has a lifeguard on duty.

Keep a first aid kit in your vehicle. Sometimes a trip to the beach can result in a cut foot from someone’s broken glass hidden in the sand, a bug bite, or even sunburn.

Speaking of sunburn, always bring sunscreen. Find one with an SPF of 30, or more, and make sure that it protects from UVA and UVB rays. If the sunscreen is not waterproof it may need to be reapplied numerous times, depending how much time you spend on the beach.

beach

Fun

While a visit to the beach itself is fun, it sometimes helps to bring some fun things with you.

Make the kids leave technology at home, and set an example by doing the same. Tech gadgets don’t do well clogged up with sand anyway.

Take a beach ball, beach noodles, and other fun beach toys with you. Depending on the beach rules, you might even be able to bring the family dog to play for the day.

If your beach rents out any kinds of boats or wave runners it might be fun to rent one for a bit. Just make sure everyone wears their life jacket and follows safety rules.

Beach volleyball is also another fun sport, mainly for older kids. You can always bring your own set-up if the beach doesn’t have one, and invite other beach goers to play too.

The important thing is to make sure everyone is safe and having fun, together.
