Franklin D. Resorts – Activities for Kids

May 16, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

I had the pleasure to be asked to take my family on a vacation to Jamaica to visit the Frankin D. Resort in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. Over the next few days I will be talking about different aspects of our experience at this resort, today I want to talk about activities for kids on the resort.

Being a family resort, I knew there was going to be activities for kids, but I was impressed by the number and how organized the activities were. Every day when we got up we would stop by the Kids Center to see what was on the plan for the day. Each day there was a chalk itinerary placed up so people could tell what was happening. Everyday Diva-J would find a laundry list of items that she wanted to do during the day (outside of being in the pool). There were times though when it was raining when Diva-J and Diva-PJ went to the kids’ center and simply played inside for a break from the sun.

One of the fun activities that they provide free of charge is Tennis Lessons. Diva-J took three lessons and by the end she was doing a great job. All kids have the opportunity to make their own Tye-Dye T-shirt (you do need to provide a clean T-Shirt to Tye Dye. We bought ours at Michaels). The girls loved working with Elodene and Taneka with the Tye Dye, as well as all of the other projects, and activities that the kids want to do.

Some of the activities are run of the mill activities that you would guess they would have such as Tennis or coloring. Outside of this though, everyday they have Rabbit Time and a Movie Night for the kids as well as the opportunity to feed the fish.

There were activities such as allowing kids to fish in the morning or early evening. And what do they use as bait? They use sausage (and boy do the fish and crabs love it). These activities are some of your more run-o-the-mill activities. They also have activities that identify the talents of your child. For example they have a super boy contest and a miss mini FDR contest where your child can strut their stuff in front of the audience to show them what they are made of. Diva-J showed everyone her skills with the Hula Hoop. She is quite good!

Other activities are ones that I know that you will not find back in your home town. For example, on one of the days they had crab racing. Now for me, I thought we would be seeing people on their hands and feet walking like crabs…oh know, they truly did mean crabs! A gentleman from the hills (as they stated) brought live hermit crabs to have them do four races to see who could get out of the ring first.

Another such oddity was the notice that we found that stated that they would be having Goat Races on the beach. After seeing the crab races the day before, I knew that I would need to see this race to believe it! They meant what they said and they did have goats racing on the beach and we picked a color to win.

These were some of the more “out there” events. They had two birthday parties on the beach for kids celebrating their birthday on or around their stay at FDR, as well as classes such as Mixology where kids had the opportunity to mix different flavors of drinks together to see if it tasted good or not.

The staff of the kids center did an amazing job keeping the kids entertained and I have to tip my hat to them, as they were individuals that made our lives as parents much less stressful.

One of the biggest things that the kids there got to do was meet new people and make new friends. Diva-J made friends with kids from Texas, Pennsylvania, Boston and San Francisco while we were there and we did similarly (but I will talk more about that in a later post).

Our girls were never bored at any point. They were scheduled the entire day (though some/much of that time was built around the pool!)

Franklin D. Resorts – A Nanny Makes It Different

May 15, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

I had the pleasure to be asked to take my family on a vacation to Jamaica to visit the Frankin D. Resort in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. Over the next few days I will be talking about different aspects of our experience at this resort, today I want to talk about the nannies.

One if the best things that FDR provides its guests is a nanny. You heard me right! Starting the moment that you step foot on the property you are introduced to your own personal nanny. You even have the opportunity to have more than one Nanny if you so choose. There were some families while we were there that were paying an additional $20 per day to have a second Nanny. Your nanny stays with you from 9-4:30 each day, with an hour for lunch during that time. Many families will use the nanny after 4:30 and if you choose to do this, you simply pay them cash $6 / hour (great deal!).

Our Nanny was Elodene and I would suggest for any of you to ask for her as she was wonderful and our kids loved her. Elodene was a quiet, gentle soul, that you could tell had a very large heart and was very caring toward our children. She was firm when needed and patient and calm when necessary. There were times when she simply took Diva-PJ down to a Hammock, placed her in it and rocked her to sleep and simply stayed there with her until she awoke.

The nanny takes your children to do activities as well as will take them to eat if you like. The idea is to provide the adults some down time while on vacation as well as some guidance from someone besides mom and dad.

The hidden gem of this resort is the nannies. They make the resort as special as it is and I cannot say enough good things about them. In speaking with other guests they all agreed about their nanny as well and mentioned that they would easily ask for their nanny again in the future. There were even some return guests that stated that they could not remember the name of the nanny, but once they share the picture of the nanny with the resort they made accommodations to make sure that they had the same nanny this year.

The only thing that I would mention is to make sure if you go to FDR to tip your Nanny at the end of the week. The nannies are not making much (as I mentioned they make more working in the evenings), so do give them a nice tip as we came to find that they are not guaranteed work immediately after you leave, instead they simply wait until they get a call to come back to be a nanny for another family in the future.

Franklin D. Resort – A Different Approach to All Inclusive

May 14, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

I had the pleasure to be asked to take my family on a vacation to Jamaica to visit the Frankin D. Resort in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. Over the next few days I will be talking about different aspects of our experience at this resort, but today I want to talk about the resort in general.

Prior to going to the resort, I had read a number of reviews as well as called a couple of travel agents to find out more about the resort in general. Almost everyone mentioned that the resort ranked in about the middle of the road in regards to all-inclusive resorts. I can say that when we arrived and started our journey to the resort, I did not know what to expect though. You see, as you leave the Montego Bay airport, I was amazed to find the amount of poverty that surrounds the country. Later in the week I came to find that the average Jamaican worker makes on average $50 US per week. Anyway, as you travel to the resort you will see many homes that look abandoned, but what is interesting is that we were told that families actually live in the homes. What happens is that families do not build homes on credit, instead they build what they can when they can, so a dream home may not be built for 10-15 years, but in the end the home will be built and they will own it completely.

Anyway, when I arrived in Runaway Bay, you see a very quaint town and the resort is set back from the main road. They have their own security and when you exit your transportation you are greeted by very kind front desk employees. The moment we arrived, we were escorted to our suite. We had a 2 bedroom suite, which was wonderful, especially with our two girls, as they were able to have their own room all to themselves.

In the first few minutes that you are there you can see that the resort is not a five star resort in regards to accommodations (my picture of our room didn’t turn out   🙁  ). I would probably give it a 3.5 out of 5. The rooms that we stayed in were very comfortable. I loved having the bedrooms upstairs so that J-Mom and I could stay downstairs at night if we chose or sit on the porch overlooking the Ocean.

I loved the King Sized bed that we had and I slept great every night. This does not always happen, instead, when I travel, I many times find that I toss and turn, but not here.

I was also able to see the one bedroom, three, bedroom and honeymoon suite and all of these other options are just as nice as the suite that we stayed in. All of the units have a refrigerator, stove and microwave (though we only really used the refrigerator). We later came to find out that this resort started as a condo complex and then the owner (who still is the same) changed the concept to what it is today.

One reason I do not give the rooms a higher ranking is that at higher star resorts you will not find any blemishes in plaster, nor cracks between doors that lead to the outside. Here you find some of these issues. Was I concerned about this, not really. The resort is very secure and the rooms are doubly so with multiple locks on doors and programmable safes in each bedroom, you and your items are very safe.

The grounds of the resort are beautiful with lush greenery and flowers everywhere. I was quite impressed with the beauty of the exterior of the resort itself. The resort sitting on the Ocean provides you ample opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Jamaican waters and ocean breezes that surround it.

Hanging Out in the Diner!

May 5, 2010 by dadofdivas 1 Comment

This was a neat location at the Henry Ford Museum. They had a 1950’s diner all decked out, and Diva-J just loved it! The place made me want to order up some grub just sitting there!

One HUGE Train!

May 1, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

This train was HUGE! It weighed 6000 tons! I have no clue how the Henry Ford Museum floor can even hold such weight up, but they must have some great reinforcement under the floor itself. My girls love trains so seeing trains like this and being able to go in them was a true treat!

Ming Wang Provides a Stylish Gift for Moms

April 25, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Ok dads, are you looking for a stylish gift for your wife? If you are you should definitely look into

The collection itself offers a versatile collection of chic, effortless knitwear for the modern woman. Machine washable, wrinkle-free, and color-guarded, the line is ideal for the active woman dedicated to style and practicality. Its separate pieces pair vibrant colors and bold patterns with fitting timeless neutrals, making it perfect for wardrobe building and transitioning from day to night.

I gave this dress to J-Mom and she was very excited. Her first impression of the dress was that it was a classic style that wouldn’t go out of stle and one that could be dressed up or down. She was amazed that it arrived folded up in a box and there was not a wrinkle on it.

When she tried it on she looked reat (of course) but she said that it was very comfortable and especially in warmer eather she coud see herself wearing it and not being uncomfortale at all.

I was very impressed by the qality and style of the dress and best of all, J-Mom loved it. Guys, if you are looking for a dress that will let your special someone look and feel great, these dresses will definitely do the trick.

You can find dresses like these on http://www.mingwangknits.com/

Going to the Ball

April 22, 2010 by dadofdivas 3 Comments

As parents we do not get to go out and have a life apart from our kids that often. About a month ago we got to go to a fancy ball that one of the students groups at my institution put on every year. We had a very fun time and it was nice to bring my own princess out to a ball for a change!

Being an Advocate for your child

April 20, 2010 by dadofdivas 3 Comments

J-Mom and I over the past 6 months have been fighting to get some testing for Diva-J to identify some behavioral issues that have become more and more concerning. When we started the process it seemed like it would work out fine. My employer provides a very good health plan and due to this, when Diva-J’s pediatrician recommended some testing for Diva-J, we thought, sure, it should be covered, so why not. This was the start of a huge journey in advocacy and fighting back and forth between our insurance company and the places where we wan to take our child.

At first, our insurance company made it seem like we would be able to go to the place where the pediatrician recommended. Once J-Mom had put together all of the paperwork for the office, we came to find out that in fact, they would not cover this location. Instead, our insurance company gave us a list of a number of other places to try and see if they worked with children. After taking a ton of time doing this, we found that none of the locations worked with children or they were not taking new patients. So the insurance company gave us a few more names and we went through the same process. The challenge was that each of these calls would end up taking a very long time due to the fact that J-Mom was retelling the story over and over to each office that she called.

Finally, we found a place that would take Diva-J and help us better understand what we can do to assist with the behavioral issues that we are dealing with. The biggest challenge that J-Mom and I found in this process is how much we had to push our insurance company and the doctor’s offices to get the service that we needed for our daughter… we truly had to become an advocate for Diva-J as we knew that she could not be an advocate for herself. I think this was the first main experience where we both felt that we were parents intervening for the betterment of our daughter.

So right now we are in the midst of having Diva-J go through some testing, so we are waiting to see what comes out of all of this. Wish us luck!

Daddy Bloggers are Da Bomb!

April 15, 2010 by dadofdivas 3 Comments

There has been a lot of talk over the last few weeks about Dad Bloggers and what they bring to the blogosphere. For example, Caleb Gardner wrote an excellent post entitled Dad Bloggers Deserve Respect. A few others that have been written in similar veins include:

  1. March 25, 2010 – Resisting fatherhood
  2. March 30, 2010 – Penis-free Parenting: A Rhetorical Analysis
  3. April 4, 2010 – Dad Bloggers Can Suck It!
  4. April 7, 2010 – Dad Bloggers Deserve Respect
  5. April 9, 2010 – Mommybloggers Rule
  6. April 12, 2010 – Who’s Your Daddy (Blogger)?

(List taken from The Dadvocate Newsletter dated April 15, 2010)

If you haven’t read these, I highly recommend you do so, especially if you blog from a fatherly perspective.

Dads on the InternetWhen thinking about this topic myself I have to say that since I have been a blogger I have met some very amazing people, both who are mom and dad bloggers. I have utmost respect for mom bloggers and they have been taking the internet by storm for a number of years and truly making a difference in how they are changing what the world thinks of mothers in today’s society.

In being a Daddy blogger myself, I have to say that daddy bloggers are doing something similar, but it has been slow in coming. In the past two years I have seen an explosion of daddy bloggers joining the blogosphere. They come from all walks of life and while I have noticed an exponential expansion of SAHD’s on the internet lately (as well as books about SAHD’s) there are many of us, like myself, who are full time working dads who enjoy writing about fatherhood and our opinions about items and life out there.

I have learned so much from the many other engaged fathers that are on the web making a difference in the lives of their children as well as making a difference in their own community (both virtually and physically).

There has been some criticism of the daddy bloggers for encroaching on the territory and topics that mommy bloggers have dominated for years, but I have to say that I believe that having the differences in approaches and opinions is beneficial and actually quite healthy and to be honest, why wouldn’t you want to hear from both mothers and fathers?

Some of the issue, I believe, is that as fathers we sometimes have taken a backseat in parenting. We have allowed mothers to be seen as the primary caregiver in the family, and society has in fact responded in kind. I mean, there is a feeling, at times from society, that our kids will take more out of the time that they spend with their mothers, than with their fathers.

I say this last statement cautiously though, as the more that I read says that a child actually needs both mom and dad to be actively involved in their lives as they approach parenting in different ways and can teach their children so many different things. As the father of two girls, I hope that I can be a role model to them of what kind of partner that should expect for themselves as they grow older. I also hope that they will see me as a joint partner in the parenting process with their mom.

Dads as Involved Parents
From what I have been reading from fathers across the blogosphere is the amazing interconnected and engaged nature of these dads. I have been completely floored at the lengths that many of these fathers go through to make their families the center of their lives.

I started Dad of Divas as a tribute to fatherhood. While it has changed some over the years and I have been doing some more reviews on this blog lately, I still remain committed to trying to leave a legacy and a testament to fatherhood with my readers and more importantly with my girls.

I take writing in strides, and sometimes I have to keep my blogging in check so that I do not get so engrossed in blogging that I lose focus on my family (as this was the reason I started blogging, right?).

I know that daily, though I am working 8-10 hours a day, when I come home, my kids don’t care if I am tired, they simply want to see me, and want dad to play and be just that, their dad. So I do what I can to be an involved parent. From taking Diva-J to karate, or being a co-leader of her girl scout troop. To working on projects for her school or sitting and reading stories and playing games with both girls… I do what I can to make a difference every day.

Dads Forming a Community
Dad bloggers are a rapidly growing community, and thanks to many great sites like DadWagon, Dab-Blogs, DadLabs, and DadCentric, our voice is being heard. There is even a new group of fathers that will be starting a new blog on April 19 as a sort of revolution, a Dad Revolution. I believe that the Dad Blogger time is coming, but a many before me have said, before our time is here we have to catch up and allow our voices to be heard. This past weekend I was reading USA Today’s USA Weekend Magazine in our paper and there was article about Bruce Feiler and his Council of Dads. If you have not read this, I encourage you to do so, as these are the types of fathers out there that are great examples of what fatherhood should be to our children today. After reading this if you want to read more, go over to the Council of Dads website and you might even want to consider starting your own council today.

I also have been amazed at the fathers I have been featuring on my Dads in the Limelight series. I am already at the point where I have interviewed 16 dads and I have many more to come. Their stories inspire me and from what I hear from dads who have read these interviews, they do the same for others as well, so I plan to continue this process and sharing these dads because they are doing their bit working through balance issues in their own ways, but are still committed to their families and to being great dads.

One final project that I want to highlight is a great project that Kevin Metzger is working on called The Dadvocate Project. He just started a website for the project itself, but has been collecting responses of fathers from across the world on a survey about fatherhood that I believe will bring forward some very interesting results. If you are a father or know ones, please encourage them to fill out the survey today.

In Closing
Dads in the blogosphere are not going anywhere and to be honest, we actually are just getting started. We have many ideas and have a voice that needs to be heard. So welcome us with open arms and allow us to have our say. We definitely don’t bite and we may just surprise you with our insights!
