A More Personal Approach To Gift Giving

November 11, 2019 by dadofdivas

A More Personal Approach To Gift Giving

You know the moment you unwrap a gift, and you see that it isn’t just a plain t-shirt, but rather it is a t-shirt that you had seen months ago. One that you mentioned in passing a few times how cool it was. Not a hint, and not asking for it. But the gift giver had remembered and got it. Or, when you have children, and you open a card that they have used their very best handwriting in and decorated with doodles and stickers.

There is something so deeply enjoyable about getting a gift that wasn’t the last minute gift-set, or more body spray. The idea that someone had really considered you and what you like is irreplaceable. You can’t put a price on that. So how do you replicate that feeling and ensure that your friends and family get to enjoy the same thing? Here are a few ways that you can make the gift-giving process personal and individual.

Use What You Know

The art of gift-giving is about using what you know for who you love. And it doesn’t matter if it is a corkscrew or a bag of lavender bath bombs. What matters is that you thought about what the person needs and wants. Really thinking about what you should get on a deeper level. For example, if your friend or a family member has always wanted to be a writer, but never had the courage to start – get them a book or a note pad with guided writing prompts. Perhaps they are a budding photographer, try to unearth some rare photography books and maybe even the means to start shooting.

Gift givers have a tendency to give what they want, rather than what the recipient one. It comes from a place of love but isn’t always what is best for the recipient.

Handmade

Not everyone loves crafting – and that is fair, it can sometimes be a lot of work and not turn out all that great. However, if you have young kids, one of the coolest things you can do is get them involved in creating gifts, making cards, and making the wrapping paper. One of the sweetest gifts, even more for people you don’t see often, is creating a card with photos on like those from MyPostcard Postcard App. You can make so many things very simply with kids, like handmade soaps, jewellery, photo frames, or you can get fancy with monogramming handkerchiefs and other items that can be kept for years.

Experiences Are Cool Too

Sometimes even the best gift will get popped in a drawer never to see the light of day again. Because pretty often we have too much stuff, so giving the gift of an experience is a big deal. There are so many options, like concert tickets, movie tickets, museum and art gallery memberships, race car driving, high-tea at a 5-star hotel, and so on. This means that rather than have the excitement of the gift on the big day, they have something to look forward to.

Memories last longer than socks.

Donations

If you are struggling to find a gift for the person who has everything, perhaps you can give a gift in their name instead. Rather than buy more for people who already have more than enough, you can consider what charities they have given to previously, or what issues are close to their heart and that support. According to Harvard, people get a warm, happy feeling from making a donation, and happier people also donate. These things combined make a happiness loop. You can be responsible for someone being happy over the space of a year with a monthly donation to their favorite charity.

Growth

Many people are on a personal growth path. They want to do more, be better, launch a business, or a blog. Things that will bring them long term happiness, and maybe even change their lives. Have they got a cool business idea? Find them some guidance in the form of books, mobile apps and webinars. Add them all into a box with a new coffee cup and wish them on their way. If they have been saying they want to do yoga forever – get them a mat and a gift certificate for a few sessions.

And as mentioned above, if they want to try photography out, arrange a day out somewhere that is just heaving with inspiration. Facilitating growth is a really cool thing to give.

Cheques

Time is something that we value very highly, and if you aren’t spending enough of it with the people you love – then they probably feel the same. So, create a personalised cheque book with things that they can cash in at any time. Think about things like:

  • Coffee on a Sunday morning of their choice
  • A fancy cooked meal
  • A cinema date
  • A walk in the woods
  • Creating a playlist for them to cheer them up
  • A night on the Xbox/Ps4/Movies

The key element that makes it work is that it is time with you. And, they can be used at any time until the book is used up. It is a nice excuse for both you and the giftee to kick back and relax.

Cool Gifts To Consider

  • A custom map or poster of where your friend or family member was born or met their significant others
  • Framing photos of your together
  • Engraved watch or other jewellery
  • Frame their favourite quote
  • Their favourite song turned into a sound wave

When it comes to giving great gifts, you can give something excellent and memorable without breaking the bank. When they say, it is the thought that counts, that is true. The more thought you put into a gift, the more you will narrow down all of the options and get something perfect for your recipient. A lot of focus is given to buying the most extravagant when what really matters in years from now is how it made them feel and that they still love it.

Kano – Giving The Gift of Technology & Education

December 15, 2016 by dadofdivas

Kano is a London-based company that empowers people of all ages to make, learn and play with computing, with its system of kits and open coding platform. photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

I know that in today’s world, knowing about computers is SO important. With the rate at which technology is changing, educating my daughters on current trends, but also providing them with the skills to build this technology for themselves is something that I strive to do. To do this I have tried to start to teach them some basic coding skills, but I know there is  more that I can do and Kano is a great gift that takes the questions out of this and makes learning coding fun for all ages.

Kano is a London-based company that empowers people of all ages to make, learn and play with computing, with its system of kits and open coding platform.

You see Kano allows you to work together, or individually, build a computer. Yes, I said build a computer! It is not as hard as you might think. My daughter and I built our own computer using the screen kit and computer kit that Kano provides and we found that in less than 30 minutes we had a working computer.

Kano is a London-based company that empowers people of all ages to make, learn and play with computing, with its system of kits and open coding platform.

While this was fun, the power in Kano though is what it does after you build your device. The interface and applications are built around the premise of teaching people how to code. Once our computer was built we started to explore the story mode of the Kano, and in this you can learn a lot about technology and how computers, sound, circuits and more work. There are also connections to other applications within the story mode and in these you are taught how to code in a step-by-step incremental way.

Kano is a London-based company that empowers people of all ages to make, learn and play with computing, with its system of kits and open coding platform. Its first “computer anyone can make” has shipped to 86 countries around the world to people, ages 6 to 81, who have used it to make PCs, screens, radios, artwork, music, games, Minecraft hacks and more. More than 19 million lines of code have been shared in its online community, Kano World, where anyone can try out Kano’s apps for free. Kano was founded by Alex Klein, Yonatan Raz-Fridman and Saul Klein and has raised $19 million in funding, from its initial record-breaking Kickstarter campaign to investors that include Jim Breyer, Marc Benioff, Martin Sorrell, Index Ventures, James Higa, Troy Carter and Shana Fisher, among others.

My daughter loves to make art through coding and after creating her masterpieces she is able to share them virtually for all users to see. The fun part of this is also that it challenges the user to not only follow their instructions to create the art, but also to experiment and change the art after they are done to see how slight changes in the code will change what they are creating. While my daughter may not be aware that she is learning, she definitely is, and I can tell that she is having a blast doing it too!

The Importance of Family Around The Holidays Captured In Angels Sing

December 12, 2016 by dadofdivas

Angela Sing

 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

The holidays are a time to come together as a family and in the movie [amazon text=Angels Sing&asin=B00FKPHPW6] you get to see the power of family as well as the importance of forgiveness of one self.

Angela Sing Angela Sing

In Angels Sing, you meet Michael Walker, played by Harry Connick, Jr. As a child he wished every day could be Christmas. That is, until a tragic accident crushed his holiday spirit. Thirty years later, Michael still can’t muster any joy for the holidays, despite encouragement from his playful wife and well-intentioned parents. But when his young son faces a tragedy, Michael needs to make amends with his past. A mysterious man named Nick gives Michael a gift and instills in him the courage to find the joy that he lost.

Angela Sing Angela Sing

Angels Sing was filled with so many actors and musicians and the amount of music throughout was tremendous. On top of this though the story was strong and you truly get to feel for the past hurt that Harry Connick Jr is character feels as well as his son as well. I have to say that living in an area with neighbor is that were so committed to one another and so committed to a common cause sounds so appealing to me especially this time of year. While this is only a movie, would it not be a wonderful world to have that kind of a living environment. this was a wonderful movie that your entire family will want to watch together, and who knows, you may even sing by the end.

HoneyBaked Ham Makes Thanksgiving Easy #HoneyBakedHoliday #Ad

November 11, 2014 by dadofdivas

HoneyBaked-Ham photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

As I get closer to Thanksgiving I start to get a bit stressed out about all of the preparation and planning that I typically have to work on, especially if we are having Thanksgiving at our own home. With food for many, purchasing everything sometimes is a challenge and then finding a time to put everything together takes even more time.

This is where HoneyBaked Ham comes in to make my life simpler and the cooking for my family and friends even easier. I have been able to order food from HoneyBaked Ham in the past and have been very pleased with both the meat that they provide but also the great sides that they have too. I have come to find that you can actually make your whole Thanksgiving meal with everything that they provide. On top of this though, you do not have to spend all day in the kitchen either as the meat has already been cooked once, so you are not starting on a whole day journey to have the meat turn out just right.

HoneyBaked-Ham

When I went in to visit my local store I was able to experience first-hand how easy the process was. The people at the HoneyBaked Ham in Okemos, Michigan store were very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful and they were more than willing to answer questions and provide suggestions for what I wanted to offer my guests this Thanksgiving. On top of this I was able to sign up for the Turkey that I wanted and was able to tell them when I wanted to get the turkey too.

When I was at the store I also checked out all of the sides that they had in stock and while they told me that the sides were on a first-come-first-served basis, they had so many to choose from, for which I was extremely grateful!

HoneyBaked-Ham

So now I have peace of mind, as I have my HoneyBaked Ham turkey ordered for Thanksgiving and this year I know that I will be able to breath a bit easier, knowing that someone else will be doing the majority of my cooking!

From now until 1/11/15 you can enter to win a $25,000 HoneyBaked Kitchen Makeover when you buy a Ham and Turkey Breast bundle.

HoneyBaked-Ham

Check out this amazing limited time coupon for $8.00 off any Bone-in Ham and Turkey Breast or Boneless Ham and Turkey Breast from HoneyBaked Ham to help you make your holiday dinner easy and delicious! Decorating My House thanks to Sears #Searsrealcheer #CBias

December 2, 2011 by dadofdivas

As I said in my earlier post about shopping for holiday lights, I purchased about 5 strands of lights on Black Friday (yes I got up that early).

Luckily on the same day we were having a bit of an Indian Summer experience with temperatures in the 60’s which is completely abnormal for weather in Michigan in late November, but perfect weather for setting up Christmas lights and not freezing my tail off!

So when I got home (and after a bit of a resting period) I began pulling out the Christmas decorations and figuring out what I would want to put outside (outside of the items I had already purchased from Sears).  As I started to pull them out and starting installing them, I found that I could really use more lights that I had initially purchased. I still moved forward, but I did wish that I could have more.

Installation of the lights was easy and I loved the handy light reel that they came on as it made for easy unraveling and I am sure it will make it that much more easy to take the lights down too. Putting together the snoopy that I purchased at Sears was also easy, though I found that I needed something heavier than the small stakes that we received in the box to hold it down in the wind that we sometimes get at our house.

As I finished hanging a wreath and some garland on the outside of my house the sun was just starting to set so I was excited to try out the lights to see how it all looked. I knew that I was a bit short on lights (at least in my perspective) but I continued with vigor and knew that it would look great. As the sun dipped below the horizon I synchronized our timers and turned on the lights and found that the lights looked quite good. I still would have liked to have had more lights, but with what I had it looked very good and the family agreed.

Seeing that I did think we needed more lights I did go back to the Sears Holiday Shop the next day and found that they were out of the warm white lights (Bummer)!  Luckily though I found that they were offering the same lights online with free shipping for the same cost!

All-in-all I was so glad to have the opportunity to shop at Sears for my holiday lights this season. I have never used their holiday shop in the past but seeing the breadth and depth of lights and the competitive pricing that they offer I will be sure to return in the future!

I have shared photos of my initial shopping experience at Sears here in my Google+ Account!
