A Fire Can Happen To Your Family. I Know!

I never thought that I would have to call my local fire department. I mean, like most, I thought, “a fire, that won’t happen to me.” Now, don’t get me wrong, I always had working smoke alarms in my home and some carbon monoxide alarms too, but it never really hit home that my family would be impacted by fire.
I have always had a deep respect for the work that firefighters do, even though prior to 2013 I had never really interacted with many of them. They risk their lives daily to make sure that each of us is safe and so many of them are now doing double duty and even acting as EMS responders in their local community.

Some of you that have been long time readers know that on February 13, 2013 we had a fire at our home. I was cooking some soup for my wife as a surprise for Valentine’s Day. My youngest daughter was watching a movie and while I was working on the final touches for a tortilla soup, a grease fire occurred. I will be honest. While I kept my head after the fact, but in the moment, there was a moment of shock, and of panic. While you always hear that much of your true character shows when you are in extremely stressful situations, when it came to this, my calmer exterior went out the window – at least for a moment.

While this was scary, I was able to contain the fire and the Kidde Smoke Alarms worked, too. I quickly called our local 911 dispatch, and through their calm instructions, I did what I could while I waited for the fire and EMS personnel to arrive.

The firefighters that did arrive put me at ease. They focused on me, but also paid attention to my daughter until additional resources could arrive to help. They were thorough, and while it may have been a routine call to them, it was not routine to me in the least.

Now three years later, I see the firefighters that assisted me that day on a regular basis, and they still remember that night. They still ask how my burns are healing and I still thank them for all that they do. Have you taken the time to visit your local fire station? 5 Things To Prepare Your Family For a House Fire

I have talked a lot about the house fire that I have had in February 2013, as well as the importance of safety for all of your homes, too. This is why I am sharing five things that I am doing that I hope has prepared my family well during Fire Prevention Week, which is October 4-10, 2015.

Now, you might ask, “How are you practicing fire safety, Chris?”

With help from Kidde, I would have to say that there are five things that I am doing that I hope has prepared my family well. Let me tell you about each of them!

Smoke Alarms – We have smoke alarms installed on every level of our home and near sleeping areas. We test these monthly and my kids know what the alarms sound like. We also just recently replaced all of the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in our home with new Kidde 10-year battery alarms as we learned that you need to do this every 10 years and we were way off! If you still need to find smoke alarms for your home, or you don’t know which ones to get, check out this
Fire Extinguisher – We have a fire extinguisher on every level of our house and the kids know where it is and how to use it. Hopefully we will never have to use it, but it is important that we have them and that we are ready. I also try and remember to check the gauge regularly to make sure that they continue to hold a full charge. When I was looking into the replacement of our smoke alarms, I also learned that fire extinguishers need to be replaced every 12 years, so make sure you have a date on them so you know when to replace them for your own family! If you do not know how to use a fire extinguisher, follow the following steps from Kidde:

Stand 5 feet away from the fire and follow the four-step PASS procedure recommended by the National Fire Protection Association:

P – Pull the pin and hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you.
A – Aim low at the base of the fire.
S – Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly to discharge the extinguishing agent. (When the agent first hits the fire, the fire may briefly flare up. This should be expected.
S – Sweep the nozzle from side to side, moving carefully toward the fire. Keep the extinguisher aimed at the base of the fire.

Fire Escape Plan – Before our house fire, we did not have a fire escape plan. That all changed after the fire. I realized quickly that our kids would not have known where to meet or where the alternate exits were, so it was important for J-Mom and I to sit down with the kids and walk them through our own family plan. We followed the great tips below when it came to the plan that we now have in our home and so can you!

Practice regularly, both day and night.
Know 2 ways out of every room.
Know who will assist children and those with mobility/health issues.
Use this grid to map out your escape plan route

Escape Ladders – Do you have an in your home? I do! This was especially important for my oldest as her room is two stories up from the ground, and if she was boxed in, I want to know that she has another escape route that is safe.

Take steps to make my home as fire safe as possible, and educate my family about the important fire safety actions.
Check my smoke alarms and replace all units that are 10 or more years old. If I can’t recall their age, I’ll take the safe step to replace them with units that include long-life, sealed-in batteries.
Install smoke alarms on every level of my home and in every room, including inside and outside of bedrooms, in hallways, and in living in kitchen areas.
Test my smoke alarms weekly, and replace the batteries twice a year.
Create and regularly practice a fire escape plan with my family.

Great Tips To Keep Your Family Safe This Summer!

Knowing and learning about fire and safety is something that is important yearound and as someone that has been impacted directly by a fire in my own home I consistently like to share with you my own experiences as well as hints and tips to help you and your family to be safer in the end.

As the summer is coming to a close, there is still a ton of time left though to get some great grilling done. With many of us doing more of our cooking outdoors on a grill (I do this quite a bit), you have to be even more diligent with your safety precautions.

The great thing is that Kidde and their partners have pulled together some very exciting resources that the whole family will value greatly!

Let’s talk about a few of the key summer safety dangers:

Grilling

I love to grill, and throughout the summer you will find me trying my hand at different kinds of meats. The challenge with grilling is that you do have to be careful about where you place it, as there is still a danger with a grill for a fire to occur, especially if you place it too close to flammable objects. You also have to be wary of not having this close to other items like vinyl siding too, as the heat expelled from the grill can actually melt the siding itself. Finally, never use a grill indoors. This may seem common sense, but because of the gas that is being expelled, there is the chance of carbon monoxide poisoning that can occur, not to mention the open flame. Below are some other hints that can help make your grilling experience a positive one!

Summer bonfires

My family and I love to have at least one campfire over the summer months. Cuddling up and roasting a marshmallow or building a S’MORE or two is just a great time for all of us. When doing this though, we have to be safe and teach our kids about campfire safety, too. If you are like my family and enjoy doing this, please consider the following:

Make sure to build camp fires at least 15 feet away from tents, shrubs or any other materials that could burn easily.
Make sure to keep all flammable material away from campfires
Know that young children may not have any sense for the power of fire, teach them safety and never leave them unattended.
Always make sure to smother your campfire and leave no embers burning when you leave. Keeping water and dirt nearby will help with this.

Fire Escape Plan

I have written in the past abut the house fire that I had in my own home. Luckily the fire was not extensive enough that we lost our home or that we all had to evacuate the house. However, after this fire occurred it became very evident that we were lacking in regards to a home fire escape plan. This is so important for people of all ages, but especially with kids. One of the things that our family does now is practice our plan every few months so that if we ever do have an event with fire or carbon monoxide,” it will not be something that was forgotten! So this summer, add a few additional items to your honey to-do list!

Include creating and practicing a fire escape plan with your family into your summer plans!
Remember to practice your plan regularly — both day and night.
Know two ways out of every room
Know who will assist children and those with mobility / health issues
Have escape ladders in upstairs rooms.

Carbon Monoxide

Do you know the potential sources of carbon monoxide (CO) are in your home? While most CO poisonings occur in the winter months, summer storms bring power outages and the use of generators. If ventilated improperly (or not at all), the CO produced by generators can be deadly. While I have never had to deal with a CO poisoning in my own home, it has always been a fear for me, and I have tried to remain vigilant on trying to keep my house up to date when it comes to CO hazards and knowing what these are to keep myself and my family safe!

Kidde even now allows you to monitor for CO as well as fire in your home with the new Kidde RemoteLync Monitor. I installed this product recently when I upgraded all of my smoke and CO alarms in my home (although you do not need new alarms to use the RemoteLync Monitor; it works with your existing alarms already installed in your home). This new device will allow you to get text alerts if your home is having a fire or CO emergency and gives you peace of mind to know what is happening when you are away from home!

Below are a few carbon monoxide safety tips from Kidde!

Install at least one battery-powered CO alarm or AC-powered unit with battery backup on each level of your home and near sleeping areas.
Do not use charcoal or gas grills inside or operate outdoors near a window where CO fumes could seep in through a window.
Check all CO alarms in your home. Do they use the most accurate sensing technology? Do they need new batteries? If you don’t have a CO Alarm, check out the Kidde Worry-Free CO alarm.
Replace CO alarms every five to seven years in order to benefit from the latest technology upgrades.
Have a licensed professional inspect heating systems and other fuel-burning appliances annually. Install fuel-burning appliances properly and operate according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Keep chimneys clear of animal nests, leaves and residue to ensure proper venting. Have all fireplaces cleaned and inspected annually.
Do not block or seal shut the exhaust flues or ducts used by water heaters, ranges and clothes dryers.
Do not leave your car running in an attached garage or carport. Do not use ovens or stoves to heat your home.

It’s National Safety Month Which Means It’s Time To Upgrade Your Home!

As I told you earlier in April, I joined #TeamKidde in March. As someone who has been affected by fire in the past, I know first hand the importance of having a plan in place for fire safety and having a home that is equipped and functional so that no matter what happens you are ready to react.

With that being said and seeing that it is National Safety Month, I reached out to Kidde to talk to them about upgrading my home’s fire safety equipment.” As a part of #TeamKidde, I have learned a lot and I have been sharing some of my learning on Twitter and hope that you have been following along. One of the things that I learned early on that I did not know is that smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.

Our home is almost 20 years old and I do not believe that any of our smoke alarms have ever been replaced. Let’s not even talk about the lack of in our home. Needless to say, our home was greatly lacking in its’ preparedness for a fire and for warning us if there was a CO emergency.

So my friends at Kidde sent me a mixture of Worry-Free hard-wired smoke alarms as well as Worry-Free combination for National Safety Month and make it a place that was safer for my whole family.

Now, of course, I had to find time to do this and I assumed that it would take me half the day to accomplish the task. However, when I did find a Saturday, I found that I was able to complete the task of changing out 8 existing smoke alarms with new ones in only about an hour – wiring and all – not too shabby for me!

I came to find that the installation of these new alarms was quite simple. When working with electricity, you should always turn off the power first as to not get a little jolt. Once this is done though it is a simple task of removing the old and hooking in the new and then testing the alarms themselves. Watch out though, as these new alarms are loud. Personally though, I loved the voice feature of the Worry-Free smoke alarms, as they were very cool and I could see this helping dramatically in a fire situation where you might have smoke filling the home!

On top of the smoke alarms Kidde has just released a great new product called Monitor that I am very excited about. This new remote notification device is small, inconspicuous, but really packs a punch. RemoteLync by Kidde provides peace of mind when you’re away from home. The device listens for the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms installed in your home, and if any of your alarms sound while you are away, it will alert you via your mobile device of the potential issue.

This is great for us, especially with some summer trips that we have planned and now that I have both new smoke and carbon monoxide alarms for my home, I know that my home is covered! RemoteLync was simple to install in my home and on my mobile device and the alerts really work too!

So this June, celebrate National Safety Month to upgrade your own home. Check your alarms and determine what you may need to do to better prepare you and your family for an emergency that may arise in the future!

Kidde Has Been Keeping Families Safe For Years & Now I’m A Part of #TeamKidde

Recently, I was asked to be a part of the 2015-2016 Kidde Brand Ambassador Council and I could not be happier to be a part of this great team. I say this for a few reasons. First, I have been familiar with Kidde Fire Safety for some time and have been very impressed with their product line, but also what they stand for and what they do to give back and support great causes. Second, I have a personal interest in this. You may remember that I severely burned my hand back on the day before Valentine’s Day 2013, ending up in the burn unit of the University of Michigan Hospital for a number of days. In those days, I learned so much about burns and about how severe home fires can be. I also learned about how preventable they can be, too, if only people are informed and proactive (here are five simple steps to safety).

All of this being said, I was pleased to be asked to be a part of #TeamKidde, which includes the following blogs:

Earlier in March, the Kidde brand ambassadors came together in Washington DC to get to know each other and learn a ton about Kidde and Kidde’s community partners. I was the unfortunate member of the team that could not attend in person. I had broken my ankle back in December and recently found that the ankle was not healing and thus I had to have surgery on the ankle. That being said my doctor/surgeon stated that there would be no flying within two weeks after the surgery, so I was grounded, and I was bummed!

The great people at Kidde though bent over backward to try and connect me to some of the action. I joined the team on Day one for the afternoon and learned a lot about Kidde’s products and virtually met some of the non-profit partners, including National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and Safe Kids. Both of these organizations were remarkable and really provide support to so many.

I learned myself that the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation does an amazing job at recognizing fallen firefighters. This is so important as these individuals sacrificed so much for others, I believe that they need to be recognized and remembered!
In regards to Safe Kids, I was not aware of a lot of the efforts that they were making nationally to create awareness and change in regards to safety for kids in general. Their website is strewn with amazing resources, videos and more that will help parents with kids of all ages and they are covering a broad spectrum of safety topics too. If you have never checked out this great organization, you should today!

I missed out on meeting representatives from the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors but I was already aware of this amazing organization from my own interaction with them after my burn experience. The Phoenix Society provides so much support for burn victims and their families. One of the programs I was most impressed with was the Phoenix SOAR®program. The Phoenix SOAR® program (Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery®) meets many burn victims as they begin the journey of the recovery. The purpose of the program is simple yet powerful: that no survivor of a burn injury should feel alone as they make this journey. Personally I can tell you that you can feel alone and different when you and your body are changed by burns and having a program like this is powerful and important! I was so happy that my fellow Kidde Team members were visiting a burn unit themselves as it is very powerful and something that you will never forget; I know I won’t.

While I was not able to be at the Kidde Safety Summit, I will definitely be sharing more with you about fire safety this year. We all can and should learn more and take steps to teach our kids too about fire safety, as, especially in my home state of Michigan, we need to make changes. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, Michigan has the second most home fire fatalities in 2015, trailing only New York, and I for one, hope to be one part of changing this!

After learning more about Kidde in the parts of the Safety Summit that I was able to attend, I am truly looking forward to raising awareness about fire safety and making changes in my own home and lifestyle, but also am hoping to be able to encourage many of you, my readers, to do the same.

Having a Plan When You Have a Fire In Your Home @KiddeSafety #dadchat

Many of you know that I had a fire in our home back in February 2013. This experience was so sudden and was something that I was completely unprepared for even though I thought I was prepared. Luckily for my family the fire was small and contained and did not spread throughout our home.

This experience however has made me rethink how prepared I am as well as how prepared my family is for experiences such as this. I was excited to meet up with some people from Kidde while attending a past Dad 2.0 Conference and after this experience happened I asked them if we could work together to get the word out preparing families for fires that may happen at home….and they were more than willing to assist!

In talking to the folks at Kidde, that gave me three steps that they recommend to help you make a safer home for you and your family. These three steps include (Content below provided by Kidde):

Step 1 – Fire extinguishers can create a pathway to safety:

Keep an extinguisher in every part of your home where fire might occur-especially in the kitchen, living room and laundry room. Need help choosing a fire extinguisher?
Read the instructions and know how to use your extinguishers before a fire breaks out.
The only time a fire extinguisher should be used to fight a fire is when the fire is small, self-contained, not spreading rapidly, the fire department has been notified, there is a clear exit behind the person using the extinguisher, and the extinguisher is used to create a safe pathway out of the home.
Respect all fires, regardless of size. Fire extinguishers are one part of a fire response plan. The main objective is safe escape.
Inspect your fire extinguisher gauge monthly and replace your extinguisher if the gauge reads empty (see illustration below); replace any fire extinguisher more than 12 years old regardless of the gauge reading.

Step 2 – Smoke alarms provide vital early warning of fire danger.

Install a smoke alarm in every room including basements and finished attics, in each bedroom and hallways outside of every sleeping area, and at the top and bottom of stairways. Need help choosing a smoke alarm?
Make sure everyone knows what the smoke alarm sounds like.
Test your smoke alarms frequently and change the batteries as needed.
Replace your smoke alarms every 10 years.

Step 3 – Prepare and practice a home escape plan.

Practice two ways out of every room to mimic the most difficult fire situation you might encounter. Be sure to practice your escape plan during the day and at night.
Assign an adult to wake and assist each child in the house. Also consider lending extra help to family members who are physically challenged or elderly.
Identify a meeting place outside the home. Practice, practice, practice—at least twice every year.

One other thing that I was worried about was the fact that we live in a two-story walkout which means that our oldest daughter has about a two-story drop from her window to get out of the house. I had been considering getting a ladder for her to have in her room, and was excited to find that Kidde offered such a ladder for larger homes. They actually have escape ladders for two or three story homes which is perfect for my home.

The final thing that our family decided to do was to make sure that we had a family meeting place set so that everyone knows where we will meet in case there ever is a fire within our home. This is so important because when a fire does occur things can become very hectic and scary, especially for kids, so it is important that a family as a meeting place to provide peace of mind for all in the family as well as to let firefighters know if there’s anyone still left in the house. To do this I ended up utilizing the Kidde Escape Plan Worksheet that they have on their website to help us all see first how we all would get out of the house, but then walking through how we would get to our meeting place as well.

I definitely still have some things that I need to do to be able to make sure that my home and my family is ready in case the river is another fire in our home, but I feel even more prepared now after talking with the experts at Kidde that I am definitely more ready than I was before my personal experience.

Get ready for cold weather with Kidde Fire Safety (@KiddeSafety)

The National Fire Protection Association reports most home fires and CO poisonings occur in winter. Besides heating appliances, seasonal activities such as increased cooking, using candles and decorating Christmas trees all add to the risk.

With that in mind I took the below quiz to see how my family held up. Unfortunately or fortunately I learned that I have a long way to go in regards to getting my home ready for the future.

Right from the beginning I see that I need to replace my smoke alarms as my home was set up in 1999… so I am actually beyond the date where they needed to be replaced. I also need some more fire extinguishers for my home and monoxide detectors too. We have an escape plan in place but I know that we need to practice this more often.

One in four older homes needs to update fire safety equipment. How old are your alarms?

Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. Replace CO alarms every five to 10 years, based on the model.

Place a CO alarm near sleeping areas and on each floor. Keep them 10 feet away from fuel-burning appliances.

Do you need other safety products?

Fire extinguisher – place one within reach in rooms where fires often begin: kitchen, garage, bedroom, living area
Escape ladder – place in second and third-floor rooms as an alternative escape route

Have you developed a family escape plan?

Practice it regularly. Know two ways out of every room and who will assist children and loved ones with mobility/health issues.

Do your children know their address and how to dial 911?

Post your home address and emergency phone numbers on the refrigerator.

Are your appliances and chimney winteready?

Have a professional inspect fuel-burning appliances to ensure they function properly and that they vent outside.
Have a professional clean or inspect fireplaces annually. Birds and small animals can make nests and leaves can build up on top of the chimney, preventing carbon monoxide from venting properly.
Have you created a 3-foot clutter free zone around fireplaces, space heaters or wood stoves?
