XPRIZE Big Hero 6 Video Contest! #BIGHERO6

September 20, 2014 by dadofdivas 1 Comment

Big-Hero-6

XPRIZE has joined forces with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and Disney Corporate Citizenship for today’s launch of a nationwide video contest designed to find the real-life counterparts to the animated heroes that will soon burst onto the big screen in “BIG HERO 6,” an action-packed comedy-adventure from Disney opening November 7, 2014. (Enter here – https://www.xprizechallenge.org/)

The DISNEY BIG HERO 6 – XPRIZE CHALLENGE invites young people between the ages of 8 and 17 to harness their creativity and come up with innovative ideas to tackle the world’s biggest challenges using science, technology, engineering, art and/or mathematics.

The six winners, the real-life “Big Hero 6,” will travel to Los Angeles to walk the red carpet at the film’s Hollywood premiere in early November, go behind the scenes and meet the creative minds at both Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering, join a special “Visioneering™” experience at XPRIZE headquarters, plus other prizes.

Video Submissions will be judged on innovation, creativity and presentation. Twenty (20) finalists will be selected based on the highest scores resulting from preliminary scoring by XPRIZE judges.  In mid October, a panel of luminary S.T.E.A.M. expert judges will evaluate the twenty finalists’ submissions and six (6) winners will be selected through a combination of the expert judges’ scores and public voting results.

Said Walt Disney Animation Studios President Ed Catmull, “We are thrilled to work with XPRIZE to find real-life young heroes whose desire is to tackle the world’s great challenges. It’s an honor for all of us at Walt Disney Animation Studios to welcome them at our Studio and at the premiere of “Big Hero 6.”

“The young people who win this contest will be real-world heroes, ready and willing to tackle some of the greatest challenges facing our world today,” said Trish Halamandaris, senior vice president marketing & communications at XPRIZE. “The XPRIZE Foundation is excited to be conducting this competition that challenges young people to be bold, creative and smart, and to dare to think big. We believe that solutions to the problems facing humanity can come from anyone, anywhere, and one of these kids just might come up with an idea that can truly change the world.”

In addition to the trip to Los Angeles, the six winners will receive reimbursement for one (1) Contestant registration for FIRST® LEGO® League for the competition season 2014-2015 in the US or Canada, and a Special littleBits® NASA Space Kit and cloudBit™ Starter Kit.

The contest is open for submissions from September 17, 2014, to October 12, 2014.

Participating kids will compete in two divisions: Junior Division (8-12 years of age), and Senior Division (13–17 years of age). All entrants must have prior consent from their parent or legal guardian in order to participate in the challenge. Registration details are available atxprizechallenge.org/bighero6.

The video submissions may involve a short story, sculpture, drawing, model, robot or whatever method best communicates the idea in the most creative way (please see Official Rules for further details, restrictions and limitations). They will be scored on how well they explain the problem, show their solution, and explain what they learned and the impact their idea would have on themselves and the world. The more creative and engaging their presentation is, the better their chance of winning.

Supporting XPRIZE Partners include FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), littleBits Electronics and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Here are the official rules: https://thismoment-a.akamaihd.net/other/1410964716-2030.pdf

My Shot At Making @EasyHomeMeals #FrozenChefMadness

March 3, 2014 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Easy Home Meals, #FrozenChefMadness

 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

As a person I have to say that I love the cook. The challenge for me is that a work full-time and don’t usually get home until after 5, which means that usually my wife has to do the cooking unless I am making something on the fly.

However, on the weekends, and when big events happen (especially over the weekends), I tend to try and shine and bring out my creative cooking juices. I will say though that anything that I can do to make the cooking experience quicker and more efficient always places a smile on my face.

One of the ways that I sometimes will be able to cook with ease is through incorporating frozen foods into the menu. I have been so amazed at the plethora of different frozen food items that you can find at the grocery store. In doing a little bit of research I found that the freezer aisle now comprises over 3,700 different foods that range from nutrient rich fruits and vegetables to ice cream and other novelty items.

Easy Home Meals, #FrozenChefMadness

Just the other day when I was at the grocery store I really looked around at all of the different frozen foods that are now available and in my mouth simply hit the floor. You see, my wife does about 60% of all the grocery shopping because I work full-time, so when I do get there, sometimes it is a whole new experience. In this complete examination of the frozen food section I was pleased to see the large variety of different cuisines that are represented, and how these items ranged in the gamut of times a day and type of food, and how they cover everything from stacked time to dinner to entertaining… you can find almost anything in the frozen food section!

Nutritionally, I also did a bit of research because I think frozen food sometimes has a bad reputation. I had no idea that frozen food goes back to 1923 when Clarence Birdseye develop the process to flash freeze food (Read More Here). From the research that I did I have found that freezing foods is a great way of preserving food that is natural and preserves freshness.

With all that being said, with the March Basketball Tournaments right around the corner I wanted to be able to make something that could fill up any hungry sports fan. I was excited to be able to come up with this recipe to share with all of you as a part of the #FrozenChefMadness challenge that is a great new contest by Life of Dad.

#FrozenChefMadness

My recipe is called: Calories Don’t Count!

Ingredients

1 Bag     Ore Ida Crispy Crowns

1Bag      Tyson Crispy Chicken Strips

1 Bag     Green Giant  Broccoli, Carrots & Cheese Sauce Steamers

1 Box     Velveeta Queso Blanco

1 Cup     Macaroni

½ Cup    Kraft Balsamic Vinegar Anything Dressing

#FrozenChefMadness

Preparation

  1. Cook ½ bag of the Ore Ida Crispy Crowns
  2. Boil water and Cook Macaroni
  3. Microwave 3-4 Chicken Strips
  4. Microwave Green Giant Vegetables
  5. Cut Chicken Strips into Cubes
  6. Cut ½ block of Velveeta into small cube pieces
  7. Microwave Velveeta to make a cheese sauce.
  8. Mix together all ingredients into a large pot, keeping the Velveeta for last. Once all ingredients are added, slowly stir in Velveeta to evenly mix through.
  9. Add in Kraft dressing and mix thoroughly
  10. Serve!

Feeds 6-7 depending on portion size.

Sponsored – I am Entering the Beano “Be Natural” Virtual Cook-Off #Beano

August 30, 2013 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Beano Virtual Cook-off

 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg
There are so many foods that can cause gas and over the years I have to say that this has impacted me in so many ways! I have been so glad to have Beano around so that I can enjoy some of the great natural foods that are out there without fearing that I will have problems with gas afterward.

With that in mind Beano asked me to use not only try their product but put together a recipe for the Beano “Be Natural” Virtual Cook-Off that would use many of the different “natural” foods that typically can cause gastric distress in some.

I love cooking and love being creative in the kitchen, so I was up for the challenge and decided to throw my hat in the ring.

I really did not know what I wanted to make, but I knew that I wanted it to be healthy. So I took the list to the grocery store and just started grabbing items that I knew would taste good and that would have great flavor and put together the following recipe that you see below.

You will notice that the recipe has two types of beans and pasta in it. Note that beans and pasta will soak up flavor, so you don’t just want to dump everything together. Take your time to let the flavors coalesce together and I think you will really enjoy the flavor in this soup.

Beano Virtual Cook-off

Beans, Beans The Magical Fruit!

1    24oz Jar on Pinto Beans
1    24 oz Jar of Kidney Beans
1    Medium Sized Vidalia Onion Diced
1   Medium Sized Red Bell Pepper
1   Full Clove Fresh Garlic – peeled
1-2  TBL of Olive Oil
1    8 oz Bag of Frozen Corn
10   Small Baby Bella Mushrooms Diced
1    49 oz Can of Chicken Broth
1    8 oz bag of Carrot Chips
1    Bunch of Cilantro chopped
1/4  Bunch of Italian Parsley chopped
1 /2    22oz Bag of Tyson Grilled and Ready Oven Roasted Diced Chicken
Breast
1     Tablespoon of Garlic Powder
2    Tablespoon Ground Cumin
1     Tablespoon Oregano
1/2     13.5 oz Box of whole wheat Elbow Macroni (cook separately and then
add)
1     8 oz package of shredded cheddar cheese
Beano Virtual Cook-off
Cooking Instructions
In a saute pan place olive oil in pan and saute onion and peppers until slightly golden. Add peeled garlic and continue to saute on medium low heat. After about 5 minutes add mushrooms and carrots. Continue sauteing until carrots are tender. Once carrots are tender, add all dry herbs and let simmer, stirring slowly to mix thoroughly. Add in broth and bring to a boil. Once boiling reduce heat to simmer and add frozen corn.
At this point taste for flavor and add salt as needed.
Add in beans and chicken. As these have already been cooked prior, heat them up completely.
At the same time start the pasta in a separate pot. Make 1/2 of the pasta box (unless you are increasing the recipe to accommodate larger numbers of guests). Once done, drain and return to pot.
Add fresh herbs to the saute pan and allow to simmer.
Take a ladle full of pasta and place it at the bottom of your soup bowl. Using a second ladle, ladle soup from the saute pan over the pasta. Add shredded cheddar cheese to top of the soup and serve.
Beano Virtual Cook-off
Now let me tell you a little about Beano!

What is Beano®?
Beano® contains a natural food enzyme that helps prevent gas before it starts. It works with your body’s digestion to break down the complex carbohydrates in gassy foods, like fresh vegetables, whole grain breads and beans, making them more digestible. Beano® enables you to enjoy your favorite healthy foods, whether at home, in a restaurant or at a  friend’s house, without worrying about gas. Beano® is not a drug.

How does Beano® work?
Beano® contains an enzyme from a natural source that works with your body’s digestion. It breaks down the complex carbohydrates found in gassy foods into simpler, easily digestible sugars before they reach the colon, preventing gas before it starts.

How much sodium is there in Beano®?
Beano® tablets contain less than five milligrams of sodium per tablet. It can be said that Beano® tablets are sodium-free.
Where can I buy Beano®?
Beano® tablets are available in the antacid section of supermarkets, pharmacies, mass merchandising outlets and health food stores across the country. Beano® is also available in outlets like Sam’s Club and Costco.

What foods does Beano® work on?
Beano® is not just for beans. It works on a whole variety of gassy foods,
including many vegetables like cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower, grains,
cereals, nuts, seeds, whole-grain breads and many other foods.

theock-milk-mustache, #SuperMilkManI was paid by Life of Dad, LLC to be an entrant in #SuperMilkMan..

Sometimes I have a @MilkMustache and am a #SuperMilkMan

Yes, I know I was paid to be an entrant, but I have to say that I was so glad that I did, as I had never tried the new Instagram video capabilities, and it is so easy and fun!   On top of this though I was happy to be able to share my own experiences with Milk in a fun way and I have the chance to meet The Rock, what more could I ask for, right?

Do you want to see my entry? If so, go over here and see what I put together: http://instagram.com/p/czytSwhzWh/   While my video does not equate to the cool one that the Rock had in last years’ Superbowl, I tried my best and am hoping for the best!

  Milk Twitter Party

On top of entering this contest, I encourage you to come and visit the Milk Twitter Part that is happening this week. Anybody that joins the Twitter Party (not just dad bloggers) can win the 16 GB iPad Mini ($329) and the 5 Milk Prize packs ($98 each). @ChrisRoutly @DiaryDad @CuteMonsterDad and @TommyRiles are the actual co-hosts, with @LifeofDadShow as the host, so follow this as well as the #SuperMilkMan hashtag to get in on the fun.

My Daughter is Entering the @Meijer Most Likely To Contest!

August 11, 2013 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Meijer, @Meijer, most likely contest, dadofdivas, dadofdivas.com

disclaimer1
My daughter has always been talented when it comes to sports. I have seen her take on sports of all shapes and sizes and just meld to the sport at hand. I am not just saying this because I am a proud dad, but instead because I know that she has a true gift that she will grow into as she gets older.

The biggest question for J-Mom and has always been what sport it would be though. Last year is was gymnastics, and this year soccer. The year before last it was baseball (and boy does she have an arm). Thus, only the future will tell what she can and will do with the athletic abilities she has been given, and I know that I will be there to support her no matter what the decision.

Diva J, soccer, sports

So for me I will say that for this Meijer contest Diva-J is the Most Likely to play sports of some kind or another and will enter her as such, how about you?

You can enter your child here: http://bit.ly/MeijerMostLikelyTo

ReadySetEat ( @readyseteat ): The Great Dad Cook-Off Voting Continues! #dadchat #dad2summit

December 19, 2012 by dadofdivas 2 Comments

Dad 2.0, Ready Set Eat

As a reminder, I am a Semi-Finalist for the ReadySetEat Great Dad Cook-Off which will occur at the Dad 2.0 Summit in Houston, Texas at the end of January. The top four semi-finalists will cook their recipe in Houston for a chance at the Grand Prize and to tout being an awesome Dad Cook! I hope that you will come and vote for me today and continue voting daily until January 14 – https://www.facebook.com/ReadySetEat/app_294527590658879

What Is This All About?

As the culinary networks have taught us, cooking food has one simple goal: Be better at it than somebody else. And since we’ve been inspired by that first competition show, the Japanese import that started it all, the Dad 2.0 Summit and Presenting Sponsor ConAgra Foods’ ReadySetEat.com are proud to announce:

  • The Fracas at the Four Seasons!
  • The Throwdown in H-town!
  • The Not-At-All-Infringing-On-Iron-Chef’s-Copyright ReadySetEat Cook-Off!

Also, a few rules…

·         Per the rules, only U.S. residents are eligible to vote in the contest.

·         The voting application is available only through the desktop browsers. It is not available through the mobile Facebook experience (all mobile phones and some tablets).

·         For internet Explorer users, the application works best on IE 8 or higher. (However we were told that an extremely small percentage of the population has a version of IE that is older that IE 8).

For this event I submitted a recipe that was Seven or fewer ingredients, and a combined cook/prep time of no more than 30 minutes.

Red, White and Bold Chili

For my own recipe I put together a brand new take on White Chili that I call Red, White & Bean and as I said, I am so excited to have been selected as one of the top eight finalists for the contest. The Chili itself is a mix of Spicy and Sweet and in my perspective is definitely one for everyone to try!

Now, I have one month to get enough votes to be in the top four to be able to go and compete in Houston (at the conference) to be the Top Dog/Chef.Dad Cook – whatever you want to call me! The prize? Well, not only do I get travel covered to the conference, but even better is that the winner will receive a $3,000 cash prize to be used towards a football fantasy weekend vacation with their family, where the only cooking I’ll need to do is at my tailgate!

As you can tell I am very excited about this and that is why I am asking for help! From today until January 14, voting will be happening. I am asking all of you to help me in getting the word out about this and for help in pushing me into the top four! All that you have to do is go to the Ready Set Eat Facebook Page and vote.

I hope that you will share this will all of your friends and spread the Chili Love that I am promoting!

The winner will receive a trip for two to the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen in June 2012 with $2,000 spending money and the opportunity for their recipe to be presented in front of thousands of attendees at the Grand Tasting Tent. Their recipe will also be featured on PAMA’s website.

The contest, which runs until February 29, 11:59PM EST, asks the public to submit a recipe and photo of their original drink creation, which will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Originality/creativity
  • Unique use of PAMA
  • Ingredient combination
  • Appropriateness of the cocktail name

The top 25 entries, as determined by the PAMA judging panel, will be posted to PAMA’s website and Facebook page for visitors to vote on their favorite entry. Finalists can share their recipe with friends and family in order to gain votes. The top 10 highest-voted entries will then be judged by an esteemed panel of cocktail professionals who will create and taste each recipe. The panel includes Kate Krader (Food & Wine), Darryl Robinson (The Cooking Channel’s “Drink Up!”) and Eben Freeman (master mixologist and PAMA spokesperson).

“PAMA’s versatility allows it to mix well with all base spirits, transforming ordinary drinks into ones that are brighter with a sweet-tart flavor,” says Reid Hafer, senior brand manager for PAMA. “We are looking for someone who can explore the endless PAMAbilities.”

Four runners-up will receive a one-year subscription to Food & Wine magazine and a PAMA gift bag. For a full list of rules and to enter, go to www.PAMALiqueur.com/HomeBarStar.
