This summer Scholastic is partnering up with Energizer to really make reading come alive with their Power Up & Read campaign. Any of you that have followed me for any period of time knows how much my whole family reads and summer is a time when we continue to do this, sometimes even more-so.

This is especially true as I know that as a parent I do not want to have my kids lose any ground between the end of one school year and the next.

With J-Mom being a librarian, we are always looking for a good book, and the kids are already making lists for the books that they are hoping to read throughout the summer. SOme of the ones on my eldests’ list include & series’ of books. My youngest is liking and books lately so I know that she will voraciously be reading those among others.

Reading is so fundamental to academic, personal and professional success in general and with that in mind, as a parent, I feel so strongly that all kids should be provided with the structure to read on a daily basis, and this is what we do throughout the year, both in and outside of the school year!

I highly encourage all parents to Power Up & Read with their kids this summer and have some fun getting lost in a great book!

Star Wars Epic Yarns Brings The Movies To Life!

Star Wars® Epic Yarns is a new board book series for kids of all ages, that tells the story of each of the first three Star Wars movies in just 12 words and 12 iconic scenes depicted in incredibly detailed – and adorable – needle felt.

Created by twins Holman and Jack Wang, the team behind the hit Cozy Classics series, Star Wars Epic Yarns will delight Star Wars fans, geek-y crafters and fans of the cute! The Wang brothers painstakingly re-create each scene in incredible detail at a 1:7 scale, building elaborate sets and staging elaborate on-location photo shoots.

Jack and Holman grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia, where Holman still lives. As well as being the creators of the Cozy Classics board books, Jack is a professor of writing at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, and Holman, a former attorney and middle school teacher, is an artist and author.

My Take on the Book

My daughter and I are HUGE Star Wars fans! I have watched all of the Star Wars movies with them and now they are asking about reading novels that have Star Wars in it too. Recently, I was asked to review the books above. When I received these I was definitely intrigued. The books were simple but thorough. On the small number of pages that were in these books, you will be shown the high points of the first three Star Wars movies all made out of felt. TYou can tell that the creators of these books are as big of Star Wars fans as I know that my girls and I are. The scenes are painstakingly created and they have chosen words that young readers can both read and understand! They were well written, and visually stunning and if you too are a Star Wars fan, you will definitely get a kick out of the books!

My Take On The Book

Before I review this book, I encourage the reader to read the foreward by John Edward and the comments by the two authors. It will give you some background into the stories in the book.

This wonderful book with its true short stories will produce tears, awe, hope, smiles and other emotions. We often only hear about the tragic events in our world. We often do not hear about the actual people involved in some of the events after they occur or all the hidden challenges people go through silently.

This book will give you a new perspective toward events in other people’s lives and even your life.

One of the stories I read was called “Jesse in the Sky”. It is the story of one of the children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.It is a story of loss but also a story of the courage this little six year old showed the world. It is also a story that shows hope, letting go, and remembrance. It is a very touching story told by his mother.

Another story was called “Precious Mess”. It will make you see that events in your life can be intertwined with others. It will make you realize there are angels who are watching out for us and understand our grief. It might help you to become more aware of God’s whispers outside of church.

CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL has become an amazing series of books. I think this new book will become a favorite.

Organize and Promote Reading With One Step Ahead #DadChat

My Take on the Bookshelf

With my wife being a librarian, this was a perfect addition to our home as we have tons of books and our kids are always reading. The Bookshelf was sturdy and allows kids to have their books set up in a fun way so that they can easily find and display them. We also really enjoyed the pull out areas at the bottom of the bookshelf as we ended up using this for some of the extras that my youngest likes to “collect.” That being said we are definitely getting a bit more organized and Diva PJ’s room is looking much better too. My thanks to One Step Ahead for putting together a great bookshelf for a reasonable price that was easy to construct too, as I am not the handiest of people, but this one was not too difficult and even I could handle it.

On a different note, I would add that I could easily see this as a great addition to any elementary classroom too as teachers could easily add books to their classroom reading centers, display them easily and provide kids with easy access to reading too!

My Take On The Book

If you decide to read this book, you need to take the time to read the forward by Fran Drescher. I think her words about her life experiences will not only make you think about your own life, but inspire you too. It will definitely encourage you to read each entry in this book. The true experiences are amazing.

Since this is a nonfiction book, you will be in awe of the strength, determination, the challenges individuals have overcome, dreams realized, and the power people find within themselves to persevere .

Once I started reading these personal stories , I had a difficult time putting down the book. I believe you too may be helped with any challenges in your life by hearing the choices people had to make and how their lives changed making some very difficult choices.

This book would make a great gift.

My Take on the Store

This store is one that you have to love. Not only do they have amazing toys (which they do), but they also offer an ethic of care for the customer that you do not see usually at a big box store. Not only do they carry great brands like Melissa and Doug and so much more. From the moment that you walk into the store you get the feeling of family and that the employees truly care about you. Though this store was a little drive from where I live, I have to say that I wish that I had a store nearer to me as it was a blast and the kids loved seeing and trying out many of the toys. I got to try out the a few items from their store including the Loopdeloom, Lottie Dolls and Plus Plus. All of these items were so much fun. I could talk all day about the intricate detail in the Lottie Snow Queen Doll that my youngest played with or the cool Plus Plus bricks and how easily they go together to create fun things. I could mention that the Loopdeloom was the easiest loom I have used too and I believe if you have a child who may enjoy weaving, this is one that will bring success to any woven project. I could and will say all of these things, but want to make sure that I bring it back to say that all of these items and more unique items like these are found at Brilliant Sky Toys. This is what makes the store so unique, that, along with the personal service that you receive make the experience memorable, and make you want to come back in the future!

Beyond the great customer service you get such a wide array of educational toys that challenge your child to think and learn and as a parent you know that these toys are of both high quality and high creativity.
