Book Review – What Do You Expect? She’s A Teenager!

July 23, 2011 by dadofdivas 2 Comments

About the Book
How often do you hear mothers of girls talk about their dread of the tween and teen years? As a mom of a daughter about to turn ten, I myself have had my share of panic thinking of the middle and high school years and the “girl drama” I have been told to expect.

What Do You Expect? She’s a Teenager! A Hope and Happiness Guide for Moms with Daughters Ages 11-19 (Sourcebooks; TP $14.99; August 2011) by Arden Greenspan-Goldberg is just the life raft moms need. I’d be happy to send you a review copy with my compliments if you‘ll let me know where to send it.

A calm, collected voice of reason, Arden’s message is: “I’m in your corner. I know you can do this. Moms are their daughters’ secret weapons and their very best defense.”

Arden is a nationally recognized family and marriage psychotherapist who has specialized in teen issues for more than 30 years, encouraging mothers of teenage daughters. Based on her renowned clinical practice, as well as her own personal experiences parenting her now-grown daughter, What Do You Expect? She’s a Teenager! is the ultimate preparation manual and survival guide for mothers of tweens and teens.

Packed with tips, expert interviews, real-life vignettes, and helpful conversation starters, What Do You Expect? She’s a Teenager! preps moms in advance for the issues they’ll face, from the familiar teen problems-sex, drugs, and alcohol use-to newer territory-cyberbullying, sexting, and internet pornography.

Arden’s unique philosophy of “Aerial Parenting” empowers moms to respond rather than react. Turning conventional wisdom on its head, she argues against curfews and punishments, and instead tells us to expect our daughters to make mistakes and enlist them in creating their own solutions to their problems. With Arden and her essential and accessible primer at their side, moms can not onlysurvive, but actually thrive during the teenage years.

A nationally featured expert on The View, MSNBC, and CNBC among others, Arden is available for interviews and guest posts throughout August and September, just in time for the back-to-school season. In addition to review copies, I also have a limited number of free copies I can offer for promotional giveaways. Should any of this be of interest, I’d be glad to facilitate.

My Take on the Book

One of the biggest fears right now is about what I have in store for me once my eldest and then both of my girls make it into their teenage years. I mean, I was a good kid during high school and really did not make too many waves (or at least that is what my parents say now). Thus for me it is hard to fathom what it could be like to have a child that does not do this (though I know that many are not like this).

What I liked about this book was that it was set up like a reference guide and had the answers to almost any question that I could think of in helping your teenage daughter. Also, the book is set up to be practical with so many examples of real life teenagers and their mothers and it is through these examples where the reader can see themselves. There are also a ton of checklists and sections where the reader is asked to put themselves in the learning role and having yourself ask hard questions about where you are truly at with your relationship with your daughter(s) during their teenage years.

If you have a tween or teenage girl or if you have a daughter younger than this, this book would definitely be the type of book that could be a lifesaver!

Meeting Another "Not Famous" Blogger

September 16, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

I have been blogging now for three years and one of the dad bloggers that I met early on was Drew AKA Benspark. I have been following Drew for a while now and have continued to be impressed at the myriad of things that he does and the passion in which he unveils this passion to his readers. He has done an amazing job at building his brand and has even unveiled a Personal Branding Boot Camp rcecently and he is giving it away for free (Yes I said FREE).

One of the things that I continue to be amazed at is his ability and stamina to continue his five year journey to put up a new picture each day. Yes you heard me right, a new picture each day!

Drew also has just started offering his services to others out in the blogosphere that are trying to make a dent in the world of blogging or social media. As a consultant he has put together some very reasonable packages to assist you and I with moving our own blogs and businesses to the next level. If you are interested in making the move from hobby blogging to something else completely, Drew can help you! If you are interested in learning more, his consulting packages can be found here.

If you have not yet met Drew or read his work, you have to! Do it today!

Book Review & Giveaway – Problogger, 2nd Edition

June 6, 2010 by dadofdivas 5 Comments

About the Book
Thousands of aspiring bloggers launch new blogs every day, hoping to boost their income. Without solid advice from experts, most will fail. This bestselling guide, now fully revised with new and updated tips and tricks from two of the world’s most successful bloggers, provides the step-by-step information bloggers need to turn their hobby into an income source or a fulltime career.

This is an update of the 1st edition and not a complete rewrite – however there are a few significant updates including:

  • there have been many many small updates and changes throughout the book. New examples, screenshots, updates of new tools, a few deletions of references to old tools, an update to our stories in the intro etc.
  • they removed a chapter on blog networks – things have changed a lot in this space and many networks are not hiring any more or have changed their models significantly.
  • There is a new chapter on social media and how it impacts and can be used by bloggers
  • There is a case study chapter that goes through the first 4 years of Darren’s main blog – Digital Photography School. He works through how he launched it, what he focused upon in years 1-2 and then in years 3-4, how he monetized it and shares the secrets to how he drives significant traffic and income through email newsletters, social media etc.

My Take on the Book
This was a great book. I knew that there were a lot of books on the market that talk about blogging and how to be a great blogger, but I have yet to read them. I was actually in my first reading through the first edition when I heard that the second edition was on its way to press. I was excited to have the opportunity to check it out.
The authors have such a wealth of experience, I knew that I could learn a lot from their experiences and part of the best parts in the book were the case studies where the reader can see what the authors did to make their blogging career possible.

I have been working hard to try and work on my own blog for many years, woring to make the right choices and working to make the blog into something that I might be able to turn into some profit as well as into something that I can be proud of.

I have followed both of the authors for a long time and what you read in this book pulls together the best of their advice and allows those of us who are bloggers to answer questions that need to be answered as well as making the right choices along the way day by day as one blogs.

This is a great book and one that I would definitely recommend this book to anyone!

If this book sounds like something you would like for your own library you can find it on Amazon!

Trying to Move The Dad of Divas Community Forward

    January 29, 2010 by dadofdivas 1 Comment

As all of you might have noticed over the past month I have been doing more reviews and have been trying to provide new ideas about products as well as building my overall readership. I have been also trying to continue sharing pictures as well as posts geared toward parenting and everyday life.

My question for you is what do you think?

I have noticed a continual rise in readership, but am always looking to help the blog move in bigger and better directions. Maybe I have big dreams of what the community can become, but I know that without all of yuo and your ideas and assistance the blog would not be here where we are today.

So I am looking forward to any and all comments, whether positive or negative that can bring the blog to the next level. I truly look forward to your thoughts!

    I need your help!

    November 3, 2009 by dadofdivas 1 Comment

Over the past month I have been doing a number of reviews over on my Dad of Divas Review site. I have been struggling on whether I should continue having both a review site as well as this site or if both should be one. In the survey that I asked everyone to fill out, I heard from a few of you and it was about 50/50 in regards to whether I should remove reviews altogether from Dad of Divas.

So now I am asking all of you for your help in shaping what Dad of Divas becomes in the future. What are your thoughts on combining the two sites?

    I’m Back….Sort Of

    February 7, 2009 by dadofdivas 2 Comments

Well… it has been a long time since I have actually put a post up, sorry to all of my loyal readers. All I can say is that it has been a crazy couple of months. Some of you may know that I found out over the holidays that a job that I had applied for was offered to me, and I decided to accept the offer. So since early January we have been working hard to prepare for the selling of our house as well as packing and the like.

We got very lucky all around as our home ended up selling in three weeks and we found another house in Michigan where we are moving in the next few weeks and got a good price accepted. So all of the pieces of the puzzle seem to be falling into place. Now we have about 2.5 weeks until we will be moving and a lot of things to accomplish in that amount of time.

Recently I went back to reading my earlier guest posts on moving with kids to allow me to think about what to do to prepare my girls for our departure. The three posts:

    The Pre Move
    The Move
    The Post Move

I know that I have a lot to do to make sure that especially Diva-J can adjust to not only a new home, but also a new school, community, friends, etc, etc, etc.

With the new job, I will do what I can to be able to blog again as I can, but I do appreciate your patience as things are changing in the Divadom!

If there are any topics that you are interested in me talking about in the future, please let me know.

    Why Do You Blog?

    August 19, 2008 by dadofdivas 4 Comments

I was looking at my posts the other day and found that amazingly I have written almost 150 posts over the short time that I have been a blogger. This amazes me, as before this, I really would not have called myself a prolific writer, at least not in the more recent past.
If you had looked at me in high school I would have said that I enjoyed writing poetry. I think just like mathematics though if you do not use it you lose it. There are times still when I have been lucky enough to come up with a good poem, but alas, my days as a poet I think are a bit in the past.

The writing of this blog is something different, and something I truly look forward to (though finding time is sometimes an issue). I find that for me, I write to talk about important personal issues, as well as issues that are pertinent to others.

I have to say that I do enjoy having others read and comment on what I write, or the pictures that I share. It gives me fulfillment to hear praise, as well as know that I may have enlightened others or made them think in a different way.

So I cannot say that I blog to change the world, nothing so grandiose. I blog for me and for my readers, and hopefully in my own way, I am helping the world around me to be that much better than it was.

So my question for the day (Can you guess it?):
    Why do you Blog?

    Ask the readers…

    August 15, 2008 by dadofdivas 5 Comments

Hello readers. I have been seeing on a number of the blogs that I read the opportunity to write in and ask questions and I thought I would do the same.

For those that would so choose, I would ask for you to submit questions or ideas for future posts in the comments below.

I look foward to your comments!
