Dads in the Limelight ( #limelightdads ) – Chris Williams ( @ChrisWi25757871 ) #dadchat

Dads in the Limelight Series

Our 505th Dad in the Limelight is Chris Williams. I want to thank Chris for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing him with all of you.

Chris-williams1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)
I’m a director of animated movies and a dad with a 6 year old girl and 4 year old boy — it’s his birthday as I write this.  I was born in Missouri but grew up in Canada — in Kitchener, Ontario.  I was offered a job at Disney Animation Studios 20 years ago and I’ve been living in Los Angeles ever since.  I met my wife here in LA even though we grew up just half an hour from each other in Canada.
I’ve worked as a storyboard artist on Mulan, Lilo and Stitch, and Frozen, and wrote and storyboarded on The Emperor’s New Groove.  I directed Bolt and I’m currently directing Big Hero 6 with Don Hall.  This job is a dream come true and I try not to take it for granted or lose sight of how lucky I am.
Chris-williams2) Tell me about your family.
My wife Astrid grew up in Ancaster, Ontario and has worked as an assistant editor but now takes care of our two beautiful monsters.
Our girl is named Harper and she’s just gone into first grade.  She’s wild and fun and confident.  Our boy is Charlie.  He’s 4 and he’s a sweet little guy, except when he’s not.
3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?
The biggest challenge for me as a dad is balancing time.  Finding time for everything is tough and I know it’s something most dads deal with.  My job demands that I work long hours and the schedule is out of my control, so when I’m home I want to be there for them.  I want to indulge all of their whims and be very present.  It means that ultimately I have very little time for myself so I try to make the most of it.  There’s very little down time, but that’s just the way it goes, I guess.  My kids are amazing and certainly worth whatever sacrifices I’ve made.
Chris-williams
4) What advice would you give to other fathers?
As far as advice for other Dad’s, that’s a tough one — I feel like I’m still figuring it out.  Maybe one day I’ll look back and consider myself an expert, but now I’m not sure I feel qualified.  If you’re a new dad, prepare to have your priorities turned completely upside down.  Your first thought, in any given situation, won’t be ‘what’s best for me?’ — it’ll be ‘what’s best for my kids?’
And hold off on the sweets did as long as you can, cause once they get a taste for it, there’s no going back.
Also, if you say something, mean it.  Don’t let them think they can change your mind once you’ve told them a rule. Inconsistency is stressful for you and confusing for them.
Chris-williams5) How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?
Balancing parenthood and outside life is the hardest thing.  You never feel like you’re doing enough.  That’s not really an answer is it?
6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?
I’ve learned that most parents have  similar experiences.  The sacrifices and the rewards are similar.  It’s nice to know you’re not alone.
Chris-williams7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?
I guess I’d suggest trying to keep your cool as much as you can.  You’ll regret it if you don’t.  And stay off those cell phones when you’re around them.  I know it’s tempting but kids shouldn’t think that little box has more to offer than they do.  And get as much sleep as you can.  A good night sleep changes everything.
8) What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?
As I think back on all the memories, I’m smiling thinking about their accomplishments.  The swim lessons where they learned to put their heads under water, letting go of Harper when she was learning to ride her bike.  It’s little things like that.  Harper’s crazy ideas and Charlie’s laugh make me so happy.

If you have any questions for Chris, please leave a comment here and I will make sure that he gets them so that he may be able to respond!

Also, do you know a Dad in the Limelight? If so, please email me their contact information so that they too can be a part of this series!

BIG HERO 6 – In Theatres Everywhere #BigHero6 #MeetBaymax

FUN FACTS

CHARACTERS

SLAM DUNK – Baymax is 6 feet tall and 75 pounds—until Hiro mechs him out. Baymax, in his super suit, is more than 7 feet tall and can lift 1000 pounds. “He’s all air,” says head of animation Zach Parrish.

GO AHEAD – Artists looked at actors like John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Gary Cooper and other cowboys to study cool, emotionally reserved traits while developing GoGo Tomago’s look and personality.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BLINK – Baymax sports a standard nine-frame-blink, says head of animation Zach Parrish. “We play with the speed of his blink throughout the film, but for the most part, it’s a standard blink. It’s the amount of time we give the audience to think before he blinks that says a lot—the longer it is, the more time he’s processing. A double blink shows confusion. We used that a few times in the film. That could be an acting choice for a human character, too.”

NEED FOR SPEED – Artists looked at speed skaters to inform the body type and movement for GoGo Tomago, a passionate student of speed.

DUUUUUUDE – Artists studied snowboarders, skateboarders and surfers to develop movement and posture for Fred.

CHILL OUT – Wasabi, at one time, was a very Zen character with very Zen dreadlocks. When filmmakers tweaked his personality, they initially decided the neatnik wouldn’t be a fan of the not-oft-shampooed-do and gave him a haircut. The look didn’t last. It turns out, everyone was just too attached to his cool locks.

LOOSE TOOTH – To ensure Hiro’s charming gap-toothed grin stayed intact from any angle, controls were added to his teeth so animators could make adjustments as needed.

TALENT

ROBOT LOVE – Ryan Potter, who voices Hiro in “Big Hero 6,” was obsessed with building robots as a kid. “I was 9 or 10 when I got a robotics kit,” he says. “I absolutely love science.”

MORE ROBOT LOVE – Genesis Rodriguez, who lends her voice to Honey Lemon in “Big Hero 6,” was on her school’s robotics team. “I was a welder,” she says. “So I made sure my weldings were just perfect and very aesthetically pleasing as well. People didn’t expect us to be so good. That was the beauty of it. We were just this bright group of girls who had an idea, executed it and beat the guys.”

SMART GUY — James Cromwell, who lends his voice to Professor Robert Callaghan, studied at Carnegie Mellon University (then called Carnegie Tech). “Big Hero 6” filmmakers spent time at the school, learning all about the innovative field of soft robotics, which ultimately inspired Baymax, a huggable vinyl robot that takes care of people.

FULL CIRCLE – As a child, Damon Wayans Jr., who provides the voice of Wasabi, wanted to be an animator when he grew up. He even studied animation after graduating high school before he decided to pursue acting.

FILMMAKING

LET IT GROW – The “Big Hero 6” animation team topped 100 members (103, to be exact). That’s about 15 more animators than 2013’s feature film “Frozen.”

MARTIAL ARTISTS – Filmmakers selected karate to broaden Baymax’s skillset—but animators had to adjust some of the movements to work for the voluminous character’s build. A few members of the team visited a nearby martial arts studio to get a feel for the practice. Pros were asked to attempt some of the moves while on their knees to simulate Baymax’s signature proportions.

I CAN FLY – Filmmakers consulted with flight specialist Jason McKinley, who worked on both “Disney’s Planes” and “Planes: Fire & Rescue,” to choreograph and execute the flight sequences with Baymax and Hiro.

670’S A CROWD – Walt Disney Animation Studios’ proprietary system Denizen allowed filmmakers to create bigger, more believable crowds for “Big Hero 6.” created around 670 unique characters, compared to 270 in “Frozen,” 185 in “Wreck-It Ralph” and 80 in “Tangled.”

  • Each of the 670 characters has up to 32 different clothing look combinations, plus 32 different hair and skin tones. That means, filmmakers could invite 686,080 unique characters to the San Fransokyo party before there were any exact repeats.
  • Denizen was made available to everyone at Walt Disney Animation Studios and employees were encouraged to model themselves in the system to join the crowd. More than 200 characters were created, and employees will see themselves up on the big screen—walking among the “Big Hero 6.”

COUNT ON IT — The “Port of San Fransokyo” scene has over 6000 people in it.

  • 23 districts were built in 3D.
  • 83,149 lots of the 150,000 in all of San Francisco were built.
  • 8 million building parts.
  • 215,000 streetlights.
  • 260,000 trees.

October 30, 2014 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Big-Hero-6

XPRIZE, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and Disney Corporate Citizenship announced the winners of the DISNEY BIG HERO 6 – XPRIZE CHALLENGE today. Much like the characters in Disney’s “Big Hero 6,” people between the ages of 8 and 17 were asked to harness their creativity and come up with innovative ideas to tackle some of the world’s biggest
challenges using science, technology, engineering, art and/or mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.).
Hundreds of videos were submitted and narrowed down to 20 finalists. From there, 6 winners were selected based on a combination of public voting and the scores from a panel of judges: Dr. Ed Catmull, President of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios; Gwynne Shotwell, president and CEO of SpaceX; Dean Kamen, an inventor, entrepreneur, and founder of FIRST ®; Anousheh Ansari, co-founder and chairwoman of Prodea Systems (and the first female private space explorer); and Jon Snoddy, VP, Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development.

The real-life “Big Hero 6” is comprised of:

  • Kamran Ansari, age 9, of Tustin, California, devised a product packaging rating system in order to educate consumers on the wastefulness of a product’s packaging. His system enables the consumer to make environmentally conscious decisions and reduce their carbon footprint.
  • Jasmyne Mendoza, age 11, of Seattle, Washington, developed a solution to world Jasmyne Mendoza, age 11, of Seattle, Washington, developed a solution to world hunger by constructing a biosphere where salt water from our oceans is evaporated and distilled into clean  drinking water.
  • Dominick Quaye, age 12, of San Leandro, California, proposed a way to generate clean energy through the use of a high-altitude power generator held in place by massive weather balloons.
  • Chase Lewis, age 15, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, invented a way to deliver emergency smoke masks to people trapped in burning buildings through the use of a football-shaped pod he designed and tested.
  • Carolyn Mennecke, age 17, of Rochester, Minnesota, proposed a more effective way to improve windshield visibility using ultraviolet light sensors to reduce the glare of the sun at dawn and dusk.
  • Kelsey Ann Murobayshi, age 17, of Honolulu, Hawaii, envisioned an innovative solution to safer and environmentally friendly transportation through the use of self-driving “pods”.

Said Catmull, “Watching the finalists’ submissions, I was so impressed by the creativity and passion in each of their videos. It was an absolute pleasure to be part of this judging panel. We look forward to hosting them at the Hollywood premiere of ‘Big Hero 6.’”
“At XPRIZE, we believe that innovation can come from anywhere and that the most effective way to address the world’s biggest problems is by tasking the public to come up with solutions,” said Trish Halamandaris, senior vice president marketing & communications at XPRIZE. “The creativity and ingenuity of the submissions for this contest reinforce this belief and prove that these young people are not the innovators of tomorrow but rather the innovators of today.”

My Take on These Toys!

Deluxe Flying Baymax

Baymax Rocket Fist

As you can tell in the above pictures, my daughter had a ton of fun with this. She loved getting into the character of Baymax and shooting off her rocket fist. The fist itself is foam, so shooting it at things should not break anything or cause too much damage. I will however say that we have made it very clear that she was not to shoot the fist at anyone or our cats! The mask fit well and could easily be worn wherever she was going. The product was well constructed and really allowed the movie to come alive for my daughter in general.

“Feast,” a new short from first-time director Patrick Osborne (head of animation for “Paperman”) and Walt Disney Animation Studios, is the story of one man’s love life as seen through the eyes of his best friend and dog, Winston, and revealed bite by bite through the meals they share.

Notes:

  • Director Patrick Osborne, who joined Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2008 as an animator on “Bolt,” took part in the Studio’s Spark program—which invites artists to explore their own unique ideas in a month-long project that is presented to the Studio team. His experimental short “Pet” was a hit among his fellow Disney artists. Osborne, whose credits Disney’s 2010 feature “Tangled” and 2012’s Oscar®-winning short “Paperman,” for which he served as head of animation, was later tapped as co-head of animation for the upcoming feature “Big Hero 6.”  But his plans changed when he pitched the idea for “Feast” as part of WDAS’ new shorts program—the project was greenlit with Osborne as director.
  • Producer Kristina Reed produced 2012’s Oscar®-winning short “Paperman.”

XPRIZE Big Hero 6 Video Contest! #BIGHERO6

September 20, 2014 by dadofdivas 1 Comment

Big-Hero-6

XPRIZE has joined forces with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and Disney Corporate Citizenship for today’s launch of a nationwide video contest designed to find the real-life counterparts to the animated heroes that will soon burst onto the big screen in “BIG HERO 6,” an action-packed comedy-adventure from Disney opening November 7, 2014. (Enter here – https://www.xprizechallenge.org/)

The DISNEY BIG HERO 6 – XPRIZE CHALLENGE invites young people between the ages of 8 and 17 to harness their creativity and come up with innovative ideas to tackle the world’s biggest challenges using science, technology, engineering, art and/or mathematics.

The six winners, the real-life “Big Hero 6,” will travel to Los Angeles to walk the red carpet at the film’s Hollywood premiere in early November, go behind the scenes and meet the creative minds at both Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering, join a special “Visioneering™” experience at XPRIZE headquarters, plus other prizes.

Video Submissions will be judged on innovation, creativity and presentation. Twenty (20) finalists will be selected based on the highest scores resulting from preliminary scoring by XPRIZE judges.  In mid October, a panel of luminary S.T.E.A.M. expert judges will evaluate the twenty finalists’ submissions and six (6) winners will be selected through a combination of the expert judges’ scores and public voting results.

Said Walt Disney Animation Studios President Ed Catmull, “We are thrilled to work with XPRIZE to find real-life young heroes whose desire is to tackle the world’s great challenges. It’s an honor for all of us at Walt Disney Animation Studios to welcome them at our Studio and at the premiere of “Big Hero 6.”

“The young people who win this contest will be real-world heroes, ready and willing to tackle some of the greatest challenges facing our world today,” said Trish Halamandaris, senior vice president marketing & communications at XPRIZE. “The XPRIZE Foundation is excited to be conducting this competition that challenges young people to be bold, creative and smart, and to dare to think big. We believe that solutions to the problems facing humanity can come from anyone, anywhere, and one of these kids just might come up with an idea that can truly change the world.”

In addition to the trip to Los Angeles, the six winners will receive reimbursement for one (1) Contestant registration for FIRST® LEGO® League for the competition season 2014-2015 in the US or Canada, and a Special littleBits® NASA Space Kit and cloudBit™ Starter Kit.

The contest is open for submissions from September 17, 2014, to October 12, 2014.

Participating kids will compete in two divisions: Junior Division (8-12 years of age), and Senior Division (13–17 years of age). All entrants must have prior consent from their parent or legal guardian in order to participate in the challenge. Registration details are available atxprizechallenge.org/bighero6.

The video submissions may involve a short story, sculpture, drawing, model, robot or whatever method best communicates the idea in the most creative way (please see Official Rules for further details, restrictions and limitations). They will be scored on how well they explain the problem, show their solution, and explain what they learned and the impact their idea would have on themselves and the world. The more creative and engaging their presentation is, the better their chance of winning.

Supporting XPRIZE Partners include FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), littleBits Electronics and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Here are the official rules: https://thismoment-a.akamaihd.net/other/1410964716-2030.pdf

ABOUT “BIG HERO 6” MOVIE:

From Walt Disney Animation Studios, the team behind “Frozen” and “Wreck-It Ralph,” comes “Big Hero 6,” an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between Baymax (voice of Scott Adsit), a plus-sized inflatable robot, and prodigy Hiro Hamada (voice of Ryan Potter). When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo and catapults Hiro into the midst of danger, he turns to Baymax and his close friends adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago (voice of Jamie Chung), neatnik Wasabi (voice of Damon Wayans Jr.), chemistry whiz Honey Lemon (voice of Genesis Rodriguez) and fanboy Fred (voice of T.J. Miller). Determined to uncover the mystery, Hiro transforms his friends into a band of high-tech heroes called “Big Hero 6.” Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring breathtaking action with all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, “Big Hero 6” is directed by Don Hall (“Winnie the Pooh”) and Chris Williams (“Bolt”), and produced by Roy Conli (“Tangled”). The film hits theaters in 3D on Nov. 7, 2014. For more information, check out www.Disney.com/BigHero6, like us on Facebook www.facebook.com/DisneyBigHero6, and follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/DisneyAnimation.
