Natural Markers Allow Kids to Be Creative and Green

August 28, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

About Clementine Art

Think Outside the Box, Color Outside the Lines Clementine Art was founded in 2008 by Diana Mercer, a former teacher with over 20 years of experience in the field of education, arts education, and child development. Diana created Clementine Art to encourage open-ended art explorations for children. The process of creating art is a powerful developmental tool for children, and Clementine Art products encourage children to dream, imagine, experiment, create, problem-solve, and above all, express themselves. Explains Diana: Real art is about creating. Early childhood educators know that the process of creating art is just as important to a childs development as the outcome. I wanted to create products that not only engaged children in an open-ended creative process, but that could also become an everyday part of a healthy and creative lifestyle.
Clementine Art produces professional quality, naturally non-toxic art supplies for children using only the purest ingredients. Clementine Art uses ingredients from the earth and our products are colored with vegetable, plant and mineral pigments instead of artificial dyes, providing an innovative solution to chemically laden, artificially colored art supplies.

My Thoughts on the Product
Overall, I was impressed not only by the idea of non-toxic and earth friendly art supplies, but also the fact that by using these products we are teaching our children to be good stewards to our planet. At the same time the colors that were provided were vivid and I can say that my girls loved painting with them!
My kids loved the markers and the colors were so vibrant. I know that Clementine products are going to be a part of my family for some time to some!

I would highly recommend these products!

Back to School Vision Board Project

July 24, 2010 by dadofdivas 1 Comment

The start of a new school year can set the tone for how that year will turn out. The concept of a vision board (also known as a goal board, goal map, or treasure map) has been around for generations, but it’s gained a renewed interest and popularity as of late.

Instructions:

  1. The first step is to create a list of intentions with your child. What are their hopes and dreams for the upcoming school year?
  2. Next, collect visual images to go with the list of intentions.
  3. To accompany the images, add decorative handmade paper scraps, pretty stickers, and attach with Clementine Natural glue.
  4. Decorate the vision board using Clementine Art Natural Paint, Markers and Soy Crayons and Crayon Rocks to add shading, doodling and drawing and your child’s personal touches and creative expressions.
  5. Let the board dry overnight, then hang in a place where your child can view everyday, reinforcing their intentions for the year!

For additional information on Clementine Art, visit www.clementineart.com, follow Clementine Art on Twitter at www.twitter.com/clementineart, and find Clementine Art on Facebook at www.facebook.com/clementinenaturalart.

3-D STREET ART PROJECT -amazing

May 29, 2010 by dadofdivas 1 Comment

Mueller surveys his ‘canvas’, located at the West India Quay on London ‘s Isle of Dogs.
The artist puts down his first strokes as the scene begins to take shape.
Mueller paints stalactites to add realism and detail to his piece.
Mueller said he wanted the artwork to appear as if the cave was unearthed by an earthquake.
Curious locals inspect the 100-square-metre scene.
When viewed from the opposite angle, the 3D image disappears.
Edgar Mueller’s previous artwork had to contend with rain in Ireland earlier this year.
Mueller used a hair dryer to desperately fix the soggy paintwork.
By day two, ‘The Crevasse’ begins to take shape.
Mueller hurries while the weather is fine.
The final touches are made on day five of the exhausting assignment.
Locals delight in experiencing the interactive artwork.
This apocalyptic scene was previously created in the German town of Geldern.
Another earlier project, ‘Turning Riverstreet into a river’ in Moosejaw, Canada.

Clever Kids Accessories That Double As Entertainment

November 4, 2009 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

I was recently given the opportunity to try out a fun new product with my eldest, Diva-J. The Wallaroo Hat Company’s Art Hat offers kids a practical wearable, washable, crushable hat that your child can design.

Every Art Hat kit contains an adjustable white microfiber bucket hat with contrasting color under the 2 ¼” brim, six nontoxic fabric paints and a paint brush.
The hat itself comes in a small unassuming package that makes you wonder what you have received, but once you unpack everything, you will soon notice that there is a lot of fun in store for your budding artist.
When I showed Diva-J what we were going to do, she was quite excited! One of the nice things about the Art Hat is that it comes with all of the supplies that you will need to complete your project, including hat, paint & brushes. The contrasting colors that the hat comes in allows a little diva to truly stand out and her artwork makes it even more the case. I also like the fact that the hat itself can be mashed up in a billion different ways and it still remains wearable. As any of you with kids know, this is a must!

The Art Hat gives children a way to express themselves in their own creativity and then share with the world their talents. While our hat is currently under construction, I know that when it is done that Diva-J will wear it with pride.

Outside of the Arthat, I spent some time looking at the other products that they offer, and was excited to see that they have some very cool men’s hats. I particularly liked the Hobart Hat in Beige & Navy. Not only does this hat have protection to the extent of UPF 50+, but it also is sturdy and I can tell it would last a long time! So maybe some day I will be able to get myself a hat such as this to protect my ever thining hair!

There are many other hats such as this that are very diverse in nature. I am sure that you will be able to find something that interests you or someone in your family!

So if you are looking for a hat that stands out and pushes your child to practice their creativity, this is a great product for you and your family.

Looking Though the Other Side Of The Lens – The Importance of Artistic Expression For Our Children

August 29, 2008 by dadofdivas 8 Comments

Over the next few days I will be having a few guest posts from individuals that I have asked to share their experiences in specifically the arts. I have asked each one of these individuals to talk about the importance of sharing the arts with our children from an early age.

Our first contributor is Mishelle from Secret Agent Mama. I want to truly thank Mishelle for sharing her perspectives with all of us as many of you have seen here on my site, artistic expression (for me in photography) is very important, not only for us as parents or adults, but also, more importantly, for all of our children.
————————————————————————————————
When people used to ask me that question that is often asked of children: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I’d reluctantly answer with, “a dentist.” I don’t know why I answered the question that way? Maybe I thought it would be cool to look in people’s mouths and fill cavities? Or maybe I was just a kid and didn’t really know what I wanted? Actually, I think it boiled down to trying to live up to something that my parents dreamed up for me.

After I graduated, with honors from high school, I started college. My major was Biology/Pre-Med with a minor in English Literature. I had wanted to be a Liberal Arts major, but my father sternly said, “Who does anything with the arts? You should be a doctor. You will be respected. You will be set for life!” So, like a good daughter I went with it. I’d regret it, too.

I did o.k. with my course load when I actually made it to my core classes, however I did extremely well in all my art history, literature, poetry, and other elective classes. I probably should have taken more of those or even switched my major to the arts, but I never felt I could do it without parental scrutiny. Shortly after I started college, I quit college.

During this time I worked for a portrait studio. The portrait studio was my first real job, and it would be something I would stick with for seven years. I had regular customers that would request me, and often times I would use portrait sittings as a creative outlet, doing those “different” shots of kids not looking at the camera. I was limited as to what I could do with the camera equipment, but I never let that impede my work or style.

As a mother now, I see that it is clearly important to introduce many aspects that our world has to offer; through music, nature, museum visits, arts and crafts, photography, films, cooking, writing, reading, etc… it is important to expose children to various forms of art and culture. Sure they need all the fundamentals, but I believe it is crucial to having well rounded children.

We have a chance, daily, to show our children art. Everywhere you look there is something to see and learn from: sculptures in parks, quotes on historical buildings, local photography in restaurants or coffee shops, interesting cuisine to put together at home, local plays or concerts, ceramic painting trips, frequent visits to the library. There is something everywhere, you just have to look and be willing to explore. A child’s mind is like a sponge and exposure to the arts can begin at any age.

Here I am now, 34 years old. My career is being a mother, but I dabble in photography. Recently I have devoted a lot of time to my art work. It’s something that feeds my soul, and my children are involved and know how much it means to me. That, in-and-of-itself, is important, too. Children should see their parents doing things that make them happy. Happy parents equal happy children.

————————————————————————-
A while back I showed my photography to my dad and he said, “You are good; why didn’t you go to school for photography?”
I smiled and sarcastically replied, “Someone told me that people don’t do anything with the arts.”
“Well they are wrong,” he replied.
I said, “You said that to me, a long time ago. You don’t remember?”
He looked puzzled and our conversation ended. That being said I will make it a point to support my children in whatever they want to do. I owe that to them. After all, there’s a whole world out there for the taking, and I will do all I can to help them grasp it!
[Mishelle is the author of Secret Agent Mama and Mishelle Lane Photography. Along with her husband, four children, whom she home schools, she resides northeast Metro Atlanta.]
