What you need to know to hire a good tradesman

June 26, 2017 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

What you need to know to hire a good tradesman

What you need to know to hire a good tradesman!

When it comes to home renovation or improvement, there are some jobs that are better left to the professionals. But when your home is your castle, it can be difficult to let others work in your beloved home, particularly if it’s someone you’ve had no experience with before. You need to be 100 percent satisfied before offering someone work, no matter how big the job. If you’re want to find a tradesman for plumbing, wiring or other skilled services, then here’s a few tips to keep in mind.

Get to know them first

As a tradesman will be spending a lot of time in your company, it’s important the two of you will be at ease, and you trust them. Before agreeing to a job, phone or meet a potential tradesman. Spending even a few minutes in their company will tell you far more about their character than a letter or advertisement. Home renovations can get emotional, due to the massive cost behind them, so it’s important to find a tradesman who will be personable, friendly and understandable.

Check their qualifications

You need to be sure that the person you hire is capable of doing the work safely and to a high standard. Do you need repairs or improvements on your gas or wiring? If so, then they are required by law to be listed on the Gas Safe Register or a registered electrician. Ask to see their ID cards so you can check, and these do expire, so make sure their qualification is still valid. You should also ask to see a copy of the certificate which lists the company the tradesman studied with as an apprentice and includes a registration number. Any electrical or work that is carried out by someone who isn’t qualified is not only extremely dangerous, but it can affect the value your home if the authorities are alerted to it.

Agree on payments up front

Many falling-outs between tradesmen and customers are due to a misunderstanding about payments. Protect yourself from excess charges by working out a payment schedule with the tradesman up front. Ask for a quote before they start work, and check whether this will include VAT. Once a quote has been agreed upon, the tradesman by law cannot increase the price of work. This is different to an estimate, which is a rough guess of what the service may cost, so be very clear with your terminology. As well as payments, you should make sure that the tradesman completely understands the scope of your work and how much will be required to avoid disagreements down the line.

When you’re looking to hire a tradesman, it pays to do your due diligence, as there are plenty of people out there getting away with substandard work. You can save yourself a headache if you find a tradesmen online on a website like Plentific, which promises an insurance-backed guarantee for all its tradesmen, saving you the hassle of chasing up missing money or shelling out for further repairs.

National Dog Bite Awareness Week – 10 Tips To Avoid Bites

May 19, 2010 by dadofdivas 2 Comments

Dog trainer Robert Cabral, known for his unique Black Belt Dog Training (http://www.blackbeltdogtraining.com) approach, shares his 10 Tips to Avoid Dog Bites in observance of National Dog Bite Prevention Week, sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) running May 17 – 23rd.  According to the CDC, dog bites send nearly 368,000 victims to hospital emergency departments per year (1,008 per day).  Dogs bite nearly two percent of the U.S. population — more than 4.7 million people annually.  Getting bitten by a dog is the fifth most frequent cause of visits to emergency rooms among children.  Cabral’s tips include:

  1. Do not approach strange dogs, whether on leash or off.  Don’t feel the urge to greet every dog you see.
  2. Teach children not to run directly at dogs to try and meet them.  Children should be taught not to approach strange dogs or to run, play wildly or scream in front of loose dogs.
  3. When meeting a dog, ask the owner if the dog is friendly before engaging them or petting them.
  4. Do not stare directly into the eye of a dog.  Dogs often see this as a threat.
  5. Always allow a dog to see you and sniff you before you pet them.  Keep your interaction with the dog short and positive.  Don’t start a play session with a strange dog.
  6. Never leave children unattended with dogs, no matter how well you think you know the dog.  According to dogbitelaw.com a new dog in the house is dangerous for the first 60 days. In 2007 and 2008, 20% of fatal dog attacks involved a new person or dog sharing a household for a period of two months or less.
  7. Dogs are not stuffed animals: do not cuddle them, climb on top of them or kiss them if you don’t know them, and think twice about doing it even if you do know them.
  8. If a dog is approaching you, do not run away.  This triggers a dog’s prey drive.  Dogs are more likely to bite someone who is running away from them than someone standing still.  The best posture to assume is to stand erect with your arms folded.  Turn slightly sideways to the dog and do not look directly at the dog.  Even if the dog is jumping and barking at you, remain still.  Most dogs will lose interest in an object that is not moving.
  9. If a dog knocks you down, roll into a ball and remain as motionless as possible.  Cover your head with your arms.  Do not scream or roll around.  Dogs may bite in playfulness.
  10. If a dog is eating or playing with something, do not approach him to play with him or to take the object away from him.

“Dog bites are statistically increasing.  Peoples’ reluctance to train their dogs or give them structure also contributes to the increase in bites,” says Cabral.  “If you own a dog, enroll him in obedience classes; socialize him at an early age with people and other dogs.”  For more information, please visit www.blackbeltdogtraining or call 310-308-5555.

About Robert Cabral

Robert Cabral is a professional dog behaviorist and trainer with a background in Japanese Martial Arts.  He applies many of those principles in his Black Belt Dog Training, a Zen-like approach to transform dogs with difficult behavior patterns.  In addition, his passion is the nonprofit he founded called Bound Angels (boundangels.org and boundangels.tv), which is dedicated to giving a voice to animals, in particular those living in our nation’s shelters at risk of being killed: some for bad behavior, some just because they are no longer wanted.  Robert has worked with countless shelter dogs, and as a result of his work, these animals have found loving homes.  He also serves on the advisory board for K9 Connection in Los Angeles where he tests their dogs and speaks to atisk teens and those in foster care about animal behavior.

Guest Interview – May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month!

May 7, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

A Sun Care FAQ with Beverly Hills Dermatologist Husband/Wife Team,
Helen Fincher, M.D. and Edgar Fincher, M.D.

Q. What role does sun exposure play in the development of skin cancer?

A. The number one cause of skin cancer is ultraviolet, or UV radiation from the sun. However, UV light from tanning beds is equally dangerous.

Q. Who needs sun protection and who is most at risk for skin cancer?

A. No one is immune from skin cancer, but people who have fair skin that burns easily, light eyes and blond or red hair are at greatest risk. Darker skinned individuals should never consider themselves safe in the sun, although their risk is lower.

Family and personal history of skin cancer should also be considered. And anyone who works outdoors or lives in an especially sunny area is at risk. Finally, a history of severe sunburns — even if they occurred a long time ago — as well as a large number of irregularly shaped moles can be risk factors for melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer.

Q. When do I need to protect myself from the sun’s rays?
A. Sun protection is important all year round, and UV rays can damage skin during any season or temperature, and even when there is a cloud cover. That means it is best to use at least an SPF 15 sunscreen even if you’re only going out to walk the dog.

That said, in the United States, UV rays are generally the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in spring and early summer. It is best to avoid sun exposure during those hours, and if that is impossible, use sunscreen, reapply liberally, and cover up with broad brim hats or special sun protective clothing.

And don’t forget that reflective surfaces like water, sand, snow, and cement can exacerbate the effects of UV rays. In short, if you spend time at the beach, on the slopes, or in the city, you need to be cognizant of sun exposure and its potential damage.

Q: How do I choose the right sunscreen?

A: Always choose a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays, and that offers at least SPF 15. But beyond that, the best sunscreen is the sunscreen you know you will use. There are formula options including lotions, gels, and even powders, as well as sunscreens that are specifically designed for areas of the body such as the face or the scalp, different skin types, and for kids and babies. If you are a swimmer, athlete, or just a very active person, you will need a sunscreen that is waterproof and sweatproof.

Q: Can you demystify “SPF” for me?

A. Sunscreens are assigned a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) number according to their effectiveness in offering protection from UV rays. Higher numbers (above SPF 15) offer greater protection, but don’t assume that using an extremely high SPF (such as 50) means you don’t have to reapply throughout the day.

Q: When should I apply sunscreen?

A: Ideally, you should apply sunscreen thoroughly at least 30 minutes before sun exposure. Follow the manufacturer’s directions regarding reapplication. Even though many sunscreens are water and sweatesistant today, a good rule of thumb is to reapply every two hours during peak sun hours or after swimming or any activity that causes sweating.

Q. Is there any way to un-do previous sun damage?

A. Unfortunately, you can’t undo previous damage, but it is never too late to embrace sun protection. Since sun damage is cumulative, the sooner you stop exposing your skin to harmful rays, the better.

5 Tips for Spring Cleaning with the Kids

March 31, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Refinish Refresh:
Instead of throwing out an old piece of furniture, let your kids paint it and keep it in their room. This doubles to let the kids express their creativity and as a piece of furniture.  Set up shop in the back yard to enjoy the warmer weather!
Quick Cover Up:
Freshen up your furniture and protect it from muddy feet and melted popsicles with a semi-custom slipcover. Leading slipcover provider Sure Fit has an extensive selection of fitted and tailored styles in an endless array of colors and materials for couches, chairs, recliners, futons, ottomans and more. They also provide “Tuck-Once” tools and grips that help to lock your slipcover in place for a natural, fuss free solution.
Make it a race and time the kids to see how fast they can get the slipcover on the furniture.
Stretch Stripe and Twill Supreme
Rearrange Change:
Moving furniture may be the easiest way to change the look of your space. Try rearranging a room, or trading out furniture from one room to the next. That unused rocker could look great by the front window, it just needs to get brought up from the basement!
Tell the kids that every item that they help move, earns them a point.  Five points equals an ice cream sundae at the end of the day.
Do it Yourself Details:
Tell the kids that as a reward for cleaning up their room, they get to decorate it with their own personal style. Let them choose the colors to cover up throw pillows with sunnier colors and textures, and coordinate the colors with craft projects that will bring the room together. Think brightly painted picture frames, finger paint artwork, and colorful crafts.
Turn It Up:
Play your favorite music and turn it up to clean while you dance.  When the music stops everyone has to freeze.  Anyone caught moving has to put away one extra item.  This makes the time fly by and the kids won’t even realize they are helping you clean.

Guest Post: Dr. Alan Greene – Top 5 Tips for New Parents

March 29, 2010 by dadofdivas 1 Comment

Dr. Greene’s Top 5 Tips for New Parents:

Moms are stressed about the BPA toxins that you’re always hearing about and they’re looking for the best, safest solutions for their babies. The solution is the new BPA, toxin-free baby products from BornFree, the most well recognized baby safety company in the country, famed for being the first to develop safe baby products totally free of the dangerous chemicals Bisphenol-A (BPA), Phthalates and PVC (sold at Whole Foods, Babies R US). Pediatrician Dr. Alan Greene who discusses below how safe they really are and what moms should know:

1. Get your home in order before the baby arrives: Clean, organize, and find a place to store all baby products, so they can be easily accessible.

2. Find the places that are open all night and who will deliver to your home – keep a running and accessible list of nearby pharmacies, grocery stores, etc. and have these numbers readily available.

3. Keeping your baby safe is important. Choosing products that are BPA- and toxic-chemical-free is a key part of protecting your baby. One way to help do this is to choose products from a company like BornFree, whose entire line of baby bottles, pacifiers, teethers, training cups, extra niples, etc., is free of BPA, phthalates, and other estrogens. You can purchase them easily at www.newbornfree.com, Whole Foods, and various outlets across the country. With each new choice, keep your baby’s safety and health in mind.
4. Try and get on a good sleep schedule ahead of time to adjust to both your needs and your baby needs. Once the baby arrives, try to nap when the baby naps. Nursing helps with this (in addition to providing the very best food for your baby and improving your own health) by making you and your baby drowsy after feeds. When your baby is awake and not nursing, taking turns between parents, when possible, is a great way to ensure both parties are tending to the baby while taking care of their own health as well and getting as much rest as they possibly can.

5. Read up beforehand and don’t be afraid to ask your pediatrician questions even before the baby arrives in your home such as what to expect for feeding, sleeping and general care of your child.

Book Review & Giveaway – The Survivors Club

January 19, 2010 by dadofdivas 14 Comments

About The Book
Which is the safest seat on an airplane? Where is the best place to have a heart attack? Why does religious observance add years to your life? How can birthdays be hazardous to your health?

Each second of the day, someone in America faces a crisis, whether it’s a car accident, violent crime, serious illness, or financial trouble. Given the inevitability of adversity, we all wonder: Who beats the odds and who surrenders? Why do some people bound back and others give up? How can I become the kind of person who survives and thrives?

The fascinating, hopeful answers to these questions are found in THE SURVIVORS CLUB. In the tradition of Freakonomics and The Tipping Point, this book reveals the hidden side of survival by combining astonishing true stories, gripping scientific research, and the author’s adventures inside the U.S. military’s elite survival schools and the government’s airplane crash evacuation course.

With THE SURVIVORS CLUB, you can also discover your own Survivor IQ through a powerful Internet-based test called the Survivor Profiler. Developed exclusively for this book, the test analyzes your personality and generates a customized report on your top survivor strengths.

There is no escaping life’s inevitable struggles. But THE SURVIVORS CLUB can give you an edge when adversity strikes.

My Take On The Book
I am the type of person that enjoys seeing people who defy the odds. This book is filled with such stories. Some of the stories that the author shares are ones that simply are amazing at least, but really leave you on the edge of your seat, wanting to know what happens to them and what choices that that will choose and make that will make or break their own mortality.

The book provides you with some great advice on what you must do to survive in experiences that many of us may never experience. Yet, even though this may be the case, the ideas and resources provided are ones that are important to understand and if you do take them and know them, there is a good chance that when and if you are ever set in a situation where you must make important choices, hopefully what you have read and learned from this book will stick and you too will make similar choices that will allow you to to be a survivor of the ordeal.

    Book Review & Giveaway – Prime-Time Health

    January 5, 2010 by dadofdivas 24 Comments

    About The Book
Twelve years ago, renowned physician and author Dr. William Sears was diagnosed with cancer. He, like so many people, wanted-and needed-to take control of his health. Dr. Sears created a comprehensive, science based, head-to-toe program for living a long, fit life-and it worked. Now at the peak of health, Dr. Sears shares his program in PRIME-TIME HEALTH. This engaging and deeply informative book will motivate readers to make crucial behavior and lifestyle changes. Dr. Sears explores how to keep each body system healthy and delay those usual ageelated changes. Written in Dr. Sears’s wise, accessible, and entertaining voice, PRIME-TIME HEALTH is a practical program to help you live your best life possible-pain-free, disease-free, stress-free, and medication-free.

    About The Author
William Sears (born c. 1940) is an American pediatrician and the author or co-author of more than 30 parenting books, most notably several in the “Sears Parenting Library.” He is a frequent guest on television talkshows, where he goes by the name Dr. Bill. He and his wife Martha Sears, R.N., are among the leading proponents of the attachment parenting philosophy.

    My Take On This Book
This book is definitely geared toward the Baby-Boomer generation (and older). While I am not in this generation, I am still getting older (regretfully) and this book does provide the reader with a treasure trove of great information about how to live a healthy and fit life as you get older.

Some of the ideas that Sears professess are ones that you would normally think of. Eat healthy foods (not junk foods). Move, don’t just sit on your rump…. but none-the-less it is still sage advice for what we all should do even as we are young.

The book is broken down into five main parts including:

    1. Keeping Your Body at its Prime
    2. Prime-Time Well-Being
    3. Prime-Time Health Care
    4. Prime-Time Fitness
    5. The Prime-Time Plan

What I liked about the book was that it was full of practical advice for the person who is in the prime of their life. It provides great examples as well as images and step-by-step instructions regarding what one should do to maintain their health as they age.

So if you are looking for a great guidebook that can help you prepare for the prime of your life, this is a great start!
