Come With Me

About the Book

Sixteen years ago, after the attacks on September 11, Holly McGhee felt the fear and wariness of going about her work and life in New York City normally. She drew strength and comfort from an illustration sent by her friend Pascal Lemaître, an artist living in Brussels. Then in 2016, Pascal’s city experienced its own terrorist attack. In the aftermath, Holly and Pascal decided they would spread the message of perseverance and optimism, and together they created COME WITH ME (Putnam; On sale: September 5, 2017; $17.99).

In tender-hearted illustrations and sincere text, Holly and Pascal’s picture book COME WITH ME answers the question asked by everyone, big and small, in the current tumultuous climate: how do we go on after a tragedy?

After being frightened by the anger and hatred told on the news, a little girl asks her papa if there is something she can do to make the world a better place. “Come with me,” he says, and they walk hand-in-hand, tipping their hats to those they pass. The illustrations show people from all walks of life, their expressions timid or wary—but the girl and her papa smile, and soon someone else is, too. That day, they do not lose to fear.

The next day, the news continues to spread its unhappy message, and the little girl asks her mama what can be done. “Come with me,” she says, and together they go to a grocery, where they meet and speak to people from all different cultures. That day, they learn that there are many different ways to be part of a community.

At home again, things are the same as usual: the table is set, the family eats dinner, the news spouts word of terror and fear. After dinner that night, the little girl asks if she can do something of her own—walk the dog—and her parents let her go. “Come with me,” she tells the boy across the hall, because “two people together are stronger than one.” Walking one step at a time, they begin to see that, as small as their part may seem, being brave, gentle, and kind does matter to the world.

Honest and accessible, COME WITH ME is a way for parents to talk to their children in the aftermath of tragedy. But COME WITH ME is also a reminder for humans of all ages, who have ever felt powerless, that the strongest response to fear is to remain kind and hopeful.

My Take on the Book
This was a wonderful book that really allows you to see the world in a new way. I loved the message and showing you that every person can make a difference in the world. I loved to see how engaged the girls and her loved ones were and the conversations that that have about making a different. Then, it was so special to see the girl passing on what she learned to another at the end too.
