I commute for about 35-40 minutes each way. When I commute I listen to podcasts to pass the time. I also drive to work and home at odd hours, 6:00am and 3:30pm. It is not terrible and I drive a commuting car (Honda Civic 2002) I'd like a new radio so I can jack my phone into the auxiliary port but that is my only real complaint for the commute itself. having to commute means that work is actually a 10-11 hour day rather than the 8 I'm paid for. Less time with the family sucks.
I commute an hour to and an hr from work everyday. I replied to your post in a post at my blog

Stay at home dad so my commute is the walk from the bedroom to the kitchen and usually there is scratching involved
Canadian Coupon Mom, just went over to your blog and commented, thanks! I used to have about an hour each way in my first professional job…I got to listen to so many audio books it was crazy!
Drew, How do you listen to podcasts in the car… my car is not that tech saavy. I hear what you are saying about a lack of family time… it does suck!
Good conversation starter…my morning commute (about 16-20 min depending on traffic) always starts by dialing in the local talk shows, if only to get an update on sports and off-the-wall news. Then, the highlight of my mornings…a drive past MSP International Airport! It's about 6 minutes out of the way, but worth it…always dreaming about the day when I can commute to work in a JET versus an SUV.
Back when I lived in Long Island, my commute was a half hour in good weather. Bad weather or car accidents could easily mean an hour commute.
Then I moved to an apartment upstate and worked out of a home office. Now, my commute was the time it took me to roll out of bed and walk to the next room over. Sometimes I'd even go to work in my PJs. (Luckily, my coworkers didn't seem to mind… mainly since they couldn't see me.)
Then I got my current job and working from home in my PJs was over. Now I had to put on a nice shirt and tie and drive 30 minutes to my job again. This time, though, the roads are more dependable. Bad weather tends to only add 5 minutes (except in the most extreme circumstances).
James, I love it… I feel that way when I am doing my morning routine in blogging… PJ's and simply relaxing… then ff to the grind.
Dave, for me, I am waiting for the car that can fly and run on trash (IE Back to the Future 2)…
My commute is usually down the stairs and over to the computer desk. Not a whole lot of thinking going on during that time other than trying not to trip on toys. I used to have about a 30 minute drive and I always loved it. Just for the fact that was my one chance to listen to sports radio, one of my true loves. Nice shades.
Techy, I tend to not mind the commute… though there are times that I wish there was just a beam me over button!
Denny, sounds like your commute is much like Portland Dad, Nice! I have not gotten into sports radio as much as NPR, but alas, that is just me! Thanks for the compliment on the shades… I have had them for a while, but for prescription ones…they fit the bill!
I have a horrible commute, Chris…I go from my bedroom – in whatever I’m wearing at that moment – ALL THE WAY upstairs to my office. And, when I’m skiing I have to reverse that! I go downstairs from our upstairs bedroom and sit at the counter in the kitchen and work…I’m exhausted just writing this!
@BruceSallan I love this! I wish that my commute was so short!
