Have you ever wanted real time web analytics to get a better picture of who was coming to your site, when? At Gauges you get Real Time Web Analytics that are updated live as each view comes in. You never even have to refresh the dashboard. There are no more waiting for today’s metrics!

This was something that really drew me in and I was more than willing to test this out to see what it would tell me. The first thing that I noted was a user-friendly  nature of the interface itself. As you see above this is what the actual interface looks like. While I was looking at this, I see my analytics changing moment by moment. On top of this there is a live Air Traffic view that will show you where in the world you have live visitors from.

Daily, you also are emailed results so you do have a feel on what is happening. I have two main blogs and thus I want to see the similarities and differences too.  Below are a few examples from a few days.

I am continually trying my best to improve on the number of people visiting my site and part of this revolves around understanding who is already visiting and then being willing to make changes as necessary – which I know I completely am.

I have been very oimpressed at how well this works thus far and think that you will be too. For the price this is really worth it!

Technology Chat: Should Parents Monitor Their Children’s Passwords? #DadChat

January 23, 2015 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Monitor-technologyShould Parents Monitor Their Children’s Passwords?

For parents, technology can be a two-edged sword: it can be used for studying challenging subjects through educational websites, but it can also be used to associate with the wrong kind of people or go to the wrong types of websites. The issue of how to use technology usually surfaces for both parents and children when children become ‘tweens and teens.

Monitor-technologyThe Dangers

While it is possible to use filtering software programs to prevent children from talking to predators who can manipulate, coerce, and corrupt their innocent children or from visiting pornographic websites, these programs are much more effective for younger children who are using a family computer or their own computer or device. However, as children get older, they learn how to use school and library computers or use their friend’s computers or devices.

Additionally, children can access legitimate websites and still get into trouble, posting inappropriate content. One way for parents to monitor content is to have access to all their passwords.

Another danger is that children may use weak passwords that expose the family’s entire home network to all kinds of malware.

Monitor-technologyThe Heated Debate

Should parents know all their children’s passwords? Some parents believe that they should respect their children’s privacy while others believe that this is a dangerous thing to do. As for children, most are against the whole idea of parents monitoring their online behavior.

Parents Who Believe In Privacy

Parents who have focused on developing rapport and trust with their children as they grew up believe that children need to have their space and their privacy. They believe that just as they had locked diaries and private telephone conversations when they were young, their children should also have these privileges.

These parents believe that by trusting their children to do the right thing, this expectation will produce positive results. They believe that they should not be involved in their children’s social lives as this would hamper their process of maturity.

However, many do admit that the world has changed dramatically since they were little, but they think that conversations about what’s going on with their children’s online social lives by computer or mobile device will teach them how to think and act responsibly. Should their child take this permissive attitude for granted, these parents believe that they can always take away these privileges and begin monitoring their children from that point on with random spot checks.

Parents who believe in assuring their children of privacy consider monitoring their children’s behavior to be nothing more than spying. “I think spying on kids is wrong,” said Lori Day, an educational psychologist who authored “Her Next Chapter,” a book on mother-daughter relationships. “It’s a good way of sabotaging your relationship with your child if you get caught.”

Monitor-technologyParents Who Believe In Protection

Parents who do choose to monitor their children’s behavior see it as their responsibility to keep their children safe because they don’t have the maturity to always make the right decisions.

Here are five primary reasons they have decided to monitor their children’s passwords with a password manager:

  • When children know that anything they do online can be discovered, it’s like having an angel on their shoulder. They are less likely to misbehave if they know that their parents might be able to find out.
  • Deterring children is much better than allowing them free rein and then being forced to come down on them when their children are reported doing something inappropriate by other parents. Prevention is far kinder than being forced into a position of shaming children.
  • At sleepovers or other peerelated activities, children are much less likely to do embarrassing or inappropriate things. They also have a built-in excuse from not participating in peerelated pranks because they can always say that their parents have access to their passwords.
  • Parents are much less likely to avoid embarrassing conversations with school authorities or other parents about their child’s inappropriate behavior, which might include serious issues like taking or forwarding sexy pictures or participating in cyberbullying.
  • If their child is being bullied online, innocently conversing with a sexual predator, or being persuaded to try drugs, parents can catch these problems well before things get completely out of control.

These days, parents can use password management software to help with online security. The best password manager systems should have a central vault that has a master password to use so that if children do change their passwords, it will show up in the vault.

Monitor-technologyWhat Children Think

Almost predictably children believe their parents should trust them unless they did something to lose that trust. They also believe that they are well-aware of the dangers of what can happen online and are not likely to be suckered into doing something foolish.

What Is The Right Answer?

While many psychologists often talk about blending light monitoring with honest conversations about the danger of the internet and then tapering off as children get older and more mature, others consider this permissive attitude dangerous. “Children are not free range any more,” said psychology professor Tanya Byron at an educational conference. “There are no more predators on the streets, no more pedophiles, than when I was growing up in the 1970s, yet children are rarely seen out. Instead, they are having a blast in this fantastic global space. I would argue that they are more vulnerable there than if they were hanging out on the street.”

Marbles ( @TheBrainStore) Challenges You To Continually Learn

February 13, 2014 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Marbles: The Brain Store

 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

The older I get the more that I know that I have to continually challenge my mind to stay active and keep thinking about bigger and better things. The more I think analytically and challenge myself, I find the more benefits that it provides me in other ways too.

This is something that I continually want to challenge my own daughters to do as well and a new company that I just learned about is doing just that. Marbles: the Brain Store, offers products that challenge your brain to think harder and deeper, as well as to see the world around you in new and unique ways.

In looking through the site there are so many gifts and items for yourself that are too cool and make me want to go on a shopping spree, but alas, I find myself restraining. That being said though, I have talked in the past about the fact that my daughters are smarties and are sometimes even too smart and clever for even themselves. With that in mind I knew that I could find find gifts for my Clever Kids and with my youngest daughter coming soon, I wanted to find just the right gift that would be a ton of fun, but would also challenge her as well.

That being said I seared through the pages of Marbles: the Brain Store, and found a game (our family loves family game night) called Rush Hour that looked like a fun game with a lot of learning potential.

rush hour collectors editionWhile the game may not look like much, it is a blast to play and centers around using the game cards to set up the board and then moving the cars around the board to help the red car escape the Rush Hour that you have on the board itself. It requires you to think, but also gives you a great sense of satisfaction when you bring the car out of the board. Both my girls loved this game, even my 5.5 year old. It is a one player game for the most part, but you can always ask for help or take turns between rounds too. I put together a short video to give you a sense of the game itself.

This was a great game and one that I know that my family and I will be using for a long time to come…I just hope that we can get new card packs in the future possibly!

If you have never checked out this website/company I highly encourage you to do so and see all of the cool items that they have. Marbles: The Brain Store is a company that has things that you will not find in stores and it will definitely be a store that I will come back to again in the future.

Best of all, right now Marbles: The Brain Store is offering Free Shipping with any purchase!

National Geographic Kids Books Encourage the Mind!

July 2, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

I was recently asked to review some of the new books coming out from National Geographic Kids this year and to say it bluntly I was impressed. I have been a fan of National Geographic since I was a kid. I loved reading about far off places and would imagine myself being able to visit the exotic destinations that I was reading about. Now, with National Geographic Kids, my own girls will be able to be transported to Africa, or back in time to the Civil War, or even further back to the time of the Dinosaurs.

The books that I was able to read were full of great information and when I sat down and read the books with my daughters their attention was completely focused on the material that was presented. Also, the books were fully illustrated with beautiful photos, as well as illustrations that drew my and my daughter’s eyes.

I was impressed, while exploring the bookstore online, at the number of books that National Geographic has for children. One title (that I did not receive as a reviewer) that I was drawn to was about the US Presidents. I am currently working on reading the biographies of our Presidents, and loved the fact that National Geographic had also put out a book detailing (in general) some information about each of our Presidents, up to our current President today.

Not only does National Geographic kids provide great books for children to read, they also have a wonderful magazine and online site to encourage all forms of learners. With games, videos, stories, activities and more, no child entering this site will be bored. There is something for everyone!

As mentioned, there is something for everyone from National Geographic Kids. I would recommend that you check out their online world as well as their bookstore for yourself to see what you and your kids can learn about the world around them!

Sesame Street eBookstore Debuts with Collection of More Than 100 Titles

July 2, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organization that produces Sesame Street, and Impelsys, launched today a new online Sesame Street eBookstore at www.ebooks.sesamestreet.org. Readers can subscribe with Impelsys to get unlimited access to a library of more than 100 Sesame Street eBooks for an annual subscription price of $39.99. A special introductory subscription price of $24.99 is being offered to subscribers through July 4, 2010.

Managed by Impelsys, the store features an eBooks collection including a wide range of fun and educationally rich Sesame Street titles such as Elmo’s ABC Book, Abby in Wonderland, and Grover’s Guide to Good Eating. Titles are offered in a variety of formats: eBooks allow a child to read along at their own pace; audio eBooks contain narration, sound effects, and music; animated eBooks bring beloved Sesame Street characters and stories to life in full-color animation; and interactive eBooks invite children to play along and learn.

Other features include an auto-play option that turns the pages for the reader and text highlighting that visually reinforces the narration in audio eBooks. The site also provides the option of viewing in Kids Mode, which simplifies the navigation for a child by displaying only the available books while removing parent tips and menus.
eBook titles cover 19 subject areas including letters, numbers, counting, colors, and cultural appreciation. New titles will be added regularly to the bookshelf, and a rotating selection of five eBooks will continue to be available free of charge at ebooks.sesamestreet.org/free.

The Sesame Street eBookstore is powered by iPublishCentral, a 2010 SIIA CODiE Awards finalist for “Best Software as a Service Solution.” The breakthrough digital publishing platform was developed by Impelsys, a fast-growing company that enables book publishers to deliver their content online with a cost-effective turnkey solution.

“There is a new generation of readers that is moving toward electronic devices in order to access news, information and books, and we want to deliver our content to young readers in the formats they are engaging with on a daily basis,” said Scott Chambers, senior vice president of worldwide media distribution at Sesame Workshop. “Thanks to our partnership with Impelsys, the debut of the eBookstore is an important step forward in bringing our 40-year library of children’s books to the next generation of young readers.”

“We’ve been very pleased with the enthusiastic response we received in our successful pre-launch and are excited about the debut of the first-ever Sesame Street eBooks collection,” said Sameer Shariff, chief executive officer of Impelsys. “Our goal is to showcase the powerful Sesame Street brand with an ambitious digital publishing initiative that will establish a new standard in online libraries for children’s eBooks.”

My Take on These Books
I had the chance to try out a number of these books and when they say that they are interactive, they mean it! My girls loved interacting with the characters and the stories.
