Shadowquest to debut at Great Wolf Lodge

September 4, 2013 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

For the past several years, guests at Great Wolf Lodge have  become Master Magi as they played the unique, live action, interactive gaming adventure, MagiQuest®. Now, a new experience is coming to the family entertainment resorts that takes players on quests through new worlds and offers fun for everyone with the wave of a wand. ShadowQuest, the latest game from Creative Kingdoms, LLC, creators of MagiQuest, challenges players to embark on a journey to save the light.
ShadowQuest will debut at Great Wolf Lodge in Wisconsin Dells, WI on August 23, followed by installation at six additional Great Wolf Lodges this fall. The resorts in Mason, Ohio; Grapevine, Texas; Grand Mound, Washington; Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania; Williamsburg, Virginia; and Concord, North Carolina will soon challenge players of all ages.

shadowQuestShadowQuest is a completely new adventure and game. Utilizing the same wand technology of its sister game, MagiQuest™, ShadowQuest takes players through the resort in search of crystals, artifacts and magical places. They can also summon Lumina, leader of the light pixies to help choose which quest to embark on.
ShadowQuest features ten quests, a “Vanishing Light” adventure and for those who successfully accomplish each step, a final battle against the evil yeti Malaki. The game, with its fantastical theme and rich, digital environments will blend into the Great Wolf Lodge resorts alongside the MagiQuest stations. Players can start and stop the game at any time; each wand stores every feat and battle
played for easy pick up on a future visit. The same wand also stores players’ MagiQuest games and accomplishments.

“We are so excited to debut ShadowQuest at our resorts,” said Kim Schaefer, chief executive officer, Great Wolf Resorts, “We have wanted to bring a new experience to families who already love MagiQuest, as well as add something to engage kids who haven’t yet played the game. With the wave of a wand—literally—the entire family can take an adventure together.”
Players will select from a variety of quests and adventures that result in a collection of special powers. As these powers increase, players proceed to higher levels of the game where the level of difficulty also increases. ShadowQuest is not confined to a computer screen. It places players inside a three-dimensional, interactive fantasy world where they must follow clues that lead deeper into a mythical realm populated by an array of characters and creatures.

Grand Rapids Michigan is One Cool City @experiencegr

Being from Michigan I can say that I love my State and for the most of my life have lived within its’ borders. Growing up on the east side of the State I never really spent much time on the West side of the State, but since I have gotten older I have definitely spent more time exploring all of the State. This past weekend my wife and I celebrated our 15th anniversary by exploring my State’s second largest city, Grand Rapids thanks to the great people at Experience Grand Rapids.   I currently live about an hour and a half from Grand Rapids and the drive is an easy one. In exploring the Experience Grand Rapids site before coming to the city I have to say that I was very impressed with the wide array of things to do in this city. Not only are there more restaurants than you can know what to do with, but the city is strewn with museums, artwork and more.

We stayed at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, an extravagant hotel in downtown, and we were placed on the Pantalind side of the hotel. This is the older side of the hotel which used to be the old Pantalind Hotel which opened originally in the early 1900’s. There is also a much more modern glass tower side of the hotel which is on the river too, but we loved our room with its’ old style charm. The hotel has a ton of restaurants within it including Cygnus (at the top of the glass tower – talk about great views), Ruth Chris Steak House, Benthams Restaurant and more! We loved how centrally located this hotel was to all of downtown!

The first night we were in town we decided to go to dinner at an amazing restaurant called San Chez, which is a Tapas Bistro in downtown Grand Rapids. We ended up meeting some friends from the area there for food that was out of this world and Sangria that was to die for. The great thing about this restaurant is that there is so much on the menu that you can choose from and then share with one another. The restaurant not only provides you with flavor that will bring you back for more but also encourages you to share so much more than food and simply talk and have a great time.

After dinner we went to a building called The B.O.B (Big Old Building) which has a ton of restaurants/Bars within it, but also has a comedy club called Dr. Grins Comedy Club. I have not been to a comedy club for a long time, but this looked like fun and the headliner Lachlan Patterson sounded good as well! I have to say that for the three acts that we saw, two of the three were great and Lachlan was definitely worth the wait! We had a great time and I would definitely come back again for not only the great comedy, but also the great wait staff as well.

On Saturday morning I ventured out into the town looking for breakfast. I decided to job around the town and see what I could see, as well as find what was open. I was surprised to see how alive the downtown area was and then found that there was a bike race in town that morning. I felt completely safe in the downtown area and ran across a number of restaurants that were open at the time. I also found some great artwork around the city as well, both installed on property and painted on the side of buildings. This made a lot of sense, especially knowing that this city is the home of ArtPrize, a art competition that I would love to come back to see in the future! I ended up just stopping to get something small from Biggby Coffee so that we could get started for the day.

Our first stop of the day was the Gerald Ford Presidential Museum. This President grew up in Grand Rapids and the Museum was right across the river from where we stayed. This museum was so interesting! This was the President that my wife and I were born into and I have to say that we both learned so much about the short Presidency of this man and what he did to heal a nation after the scandal of the Nixon Presidency. We spent quite a bit of time in this museum and even visited both his and Betty Ford’s grave.

From there we went to the Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM). Again, this museum was only a block away from the hotel and I had heard great things about it. What I loved about the museum was that it had a bit of everything all in one place. My favorite floor was probably the third as it held artwork from Picasso to more Michigan-based artists and art that ranged in age from the 1500’s to present. They even had a few pieces that were recognized from previous ArtPrize competitions including the one below that just blew my mind. You may not be able to tell, but this is not a photograph, but instead was a pencil drawing – it was simply stunning!

Saturday night we went to Hopcat, one of the restaurant/micro breweries in town. I recently learned about the fact that Grand Rapids was recently named one of the top Beer Cities in the United States (who would have known). In the down Grand Rapids area, Hopcat along with a number of other micro breweries have started up and are providing customers with amazing blends of beer. At Hopcat, they had 64 beers on tap – yes I said 64, talk about crazy! The food at Hopcat was great – you have to try the Crack Fries and the atmosphere was loud and fun!

Sunday was our short day as we had to check out by 11 and had to pick up our girls as well. We had found a pizza place named Georgios Gourmet Pizza on Friday and decided to come back for brunch seeing that it had a remarkable number of different pizzas (including a Mac ‘n Cheese pizze, a Salad Pizza, Taco Pizza and more). The pizza was definitely worth the wait as it was one of the best tasting pizzas that I have tried in the past. On top of this the crust was just right which not every pizza place can claim. What was even better though was that we found out that there are two other franchise restaurants near where we live outside of Lansing, so guess where we will be going in the near future.

We just scratched the surface of this city on this trip, but rest assured we will be back. This is an amazing city with so much to offer everyone (not just adults). If you are looking for a great city that has things for all ages, food to make your mouth water, art that will dazzle and natural beauty that is awe-inspiring, Grand Rapids is the place to visit!

Looking for Night Life in Chicago? Look No Further Than Navy Pier ( @navypier )

July 14, 2012 by dadofdivas 25 Comments

As I’ve mentioned in a few other posts, about two weeks ago my wife and I went to Chicago for a few days to celebrate our 14th anniversary. As part of this trip we wanted to see and try out many different things in the city. We had visited Chicago in the past one of the areas that we had never been to was Navy Pier. While we have driven by Navy Pier many times we had never visited it before, and during this trip we knew we wanted to visit this landmark.

In researching Navy Pier I was amazed to find the breath and depth of the vendors and activities that you can take part in while visiting the Pier. There were so many more things at this location than I ever would have guessed based on simply seeing the Ferris Wheel that you can see from Lakeshore Drive.

From where we stayed at Hotel 71 it was 4-5 long blocks to Navy Pier. My wife and I ended up walking this, though it was much farther than we would have first anticipated. When we arrived we were surrounded by people. This is definitely not the place for someone to go on a Saturday night if they are looking for a quiet location. Instead, you’re going to find it amazing number of people visiting Navy Pier, and the lines may be quite long.

When we arrived we did not have long before we were to be at the Cirque Shanghai presentation that we planned to attend. If have never been to a presentation like this being ready to be amazed. We had never gone to a show like this and our mouths were constantly on the floor. Below is a video that will give you a perspective of what you may see the performance:

This show was simply breath-taking and the artists within it should be complimented for their artistry as the show truly kept our interest and attention for the entire time.

After seeing this show we decided to explore the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows as both my wife and I love this type of art. If you, like us enjoy stained-glass you will be amazed at the amount of stained-glass that is displayed and at the remarkable workmanship that is shown within the stained-glass that is shared in this museum.

Next we visited a number of the vendors to see and shop, and we ended up purchasing at least one gift while we were there on top of some Garrett’s Popcorn!

Next, we explored some of the attractions and rides at the Navy Pier offers. We played a round of miniature golf and luckily for us, we ended up tying in score (so no fights between us). We also we able to go on the Ferris Wheel which offered wonderful views of the illuminated Chicago skyline. any of the other attractions had long lines that we did not want to wait in.

We ended our visit to Navy Pier by watching the fireworks that are sent off every Saturday night. The fireworks display was great and actually quite lengthy. The only thing I will say is that if you are going to stay for the fireworks, be patient afterwards as it will take some time to exit the pier and took it back to your destination due to the massive exodus that occurs at this period in time.

The wife and I were both very happy that we went and explored Navy Pier, and for us we only scratched the surface in the hours we were there. We actually did not even get to the very end of the pier as it is much larger and longer than I would’ve ever anticipated. I will leave that for another day and I know there’s much more that I can experience and explore the next time I return to Chicago.

The Lake Express ( @lakeexpress ) #Car Ferry Saves Time and Stress In Driving Around Lake #Michigan

June 25, 2012 by dadofdivas 19 Comments

I was lucky enough to travel on the Lake Express Car Ferry as I was traveling from Michigan to Wisconsin. For me the idea of taking the Ferry from Muskegon, Michigan to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to be greatly intriguing as it cut down the time to my destination dramatically (as this was a high speed ferry) but it also cut out the stress of traveling through Chicago with the large amounts of traffic and longer driving times.

I took my car on the ferry, but not all people do, there are some that simply walk on and walk off and the overall cost is less for these individuals. The process for driving into the ferry itself was easy and the individuals working on the ferry were pleasant to work with. Once we were on the ship, we were asked to enter the main cabin to find a seat (there was a premier class cabin but I was not in this). When I spoke to the crew about this they let me know that people in Premier Class were given free beverages, free headsets to watch the movie (In the main cabin these headsets cost $4.00/headset) and more comfortable seating. The overall cost was not that much different between the price of the cabins, in all the price difference was $12.50 one way and $30 roundtrip. Food was available throughout the trip too!

During the voyage, we did have quite a bit of pitching and rolling on the first leg of our trip but I was wearing a Seaband on each arm for the trip, and because of this I did not have any issues of motion sickness. I will suggest though that you should consider motion sickness remedies if you are considering passage on the Lake Express Car Ferry, as some days you will need this while others will be calm and serene and nothing is really needed to help your motion ailments.

The Ferry Ride that we went on went through some rain which made going outside a bit treacherous, so I decided to stay inside for the beginning of the trip. Once we got to the middle of the lake and it was sunny, I did go up to the sun deck and it was very windy and wet, but it was a beautiful view (even though it was windy). On the way back though Lake Michigan was crystal clear and we had no problems at all moving around or going above on deck, so it really depends overall on the day that you are traveling.

The trip otherwise was pretty uneventful, and we made it to Milwaukee and back. I would recommend this as a great alternative for those traveling between Michigan and Wisconsin and vice-versa. It does take a bit of time and money, but the lack of stress in driving is worth the effort and you can let someone else do the driving at least for part of your trip.

@GreatWolfLodge Will Provide Lasting Memories for the Whole Family!

April 30, 2012 by dadofdivas 26 Comments

Have you ever looked for an amazingly fun getaway for your family that gives you the best of all worlds. This past weekend my family and I had the opportunity to travel to Traverse City to go to Great Wolf Lodge. We had never been there before, but we had heard of many people that had gone and they had a great time. For us, it took us a little over three hours to get there, but the three hours were definitely worth it. When we got there, of course, the kids wanted to hit the waterpark. While the waterpark is a large part of the resort, I came to find that there was much more to the resort than just water and slides.

Before I get into the rest of the resort, I have to talk about the waterpark itself. The waterpark was huge and had a little bit of everything, from pool, three waterslides, whirlpools and huge waterpark tree park. One of the best things about the waterpark was the fact that they kept it at a constant 84 degrees inside the waterpark and the water is also quite comfortable as well (unlike many waterparks that I have been to in the past). For my eldest daughter, she mentioned that her favorite parts of the waterpark were the waterslides as well as the huge can of water that dumped on bystanders every 5 minutes or so (and did it ever drench you). The three waterslides were quite different, and I have to say that my favorite was the yellow on that allowed up to three people go down and provided a bit faster ride and you even got to go in the dark. My youngest daughter loved the two waterslides that came off of the tree fort and for only being four, she showed some great bravery going on that over and over again!

On day two of our stay at the resort I spoke to the manager and he let me know about a program that they had called the paw pass. This great addition to your stay opens up the rest of the resort to you and your family. It provides you with the opportunity to try out a interactive scavenger hunt called MagiQuest as well as get a cool tattoo, a stuffed friend, a snack in the waterpark, tokens for the Arcade  and a memorable take home gift from the Cub Club.

MagiQuest was something that looked awesome and in starting the quest itself, my eldest daughter worked to become a Master Magi. This took a few hours and quite a bit of walking between floors, but she was able to achieve this rank and then battle both a Dragon and Goblin King.

There was quite a bit more that she could have done if we had more time, but alas, we were not able to complete everything. The game though is fun because you get a magic wand and go around collecting special runes that you need to defeat your enemies, as well as gold to support your quests. The game makes you think deeply about riddles, and remember where things are along the way. The game was a ton of fun and the resort had some hidden fun things around the resort as well which worked with the wand that made it even more worthwhile.

The tattoo that I mentioned is not your run of the mill tattoo but a multicolored, sparkling tattoo that was amazing! They had so many tattoos to choose from and my youngest chose one of the characters from the resort and as you can see it is quite intricate.

The resort itself had a great gift shop, and inside this gift shop you can find some amazing items to help you remember your trip. One of the things that my youngest was able to do thanks to the Paw Pass was build a stuffed friend that she will have forever. If you have ever been to Build-A-Bear workshop this is a similar idea and they have outfits that you can purchase as well.

The Cub Club is a fun location that allows kids to be able to be creative or just chill out playing some games, watching a movie, or making a fun take-home item (for a small fee). They had a ton of things that you could make and take home that allowed kids to show their creative juices and my eldest made a knap sack and my youngest made a monkey pillow (as she loves monkeys).

The arcade was a blast and you can find games that range everywhere from one to four tokens (each token is worth .25/token). Our girls each had 10 tokens so they did not last too long, but that did not stop them from having a blast in the arcade itself!

Finally was the snack that they had in the waterpark. The snack, called Potato Stix, really was a potato on a stick. What was amazing about this was that they literally take a full potato slice it up in a machine with a spiral cut, fry it and place seasoning on it (based on your own taste) and it comes out looking like potato chips on a stick. The snack itself is not completely crunchy like a potato chip, but it was still a lot of tasty fun.

These are only a few things that we tried and enjoyed. There was also a ton of daily activities such as an animatronic show as well as story time every night which was fun and the kids got to meet some of the resort characters after the story. They had an on-site restaurant which the kids liked as well.

All-in-all this was a great trip which will provide long-lasting memories. I think we are hooked and I believe that you will be too! I highly encourage you to consider taking your own family to a Great Wolf Lodge near you!

May 8, 2011 by dadofdivas 105 Comments

It’s time for a Spring Fling! Between May 5-8 the the 10 bloggers from Blog Pop are working together to bring you some awesome giveaways! So go and check out the following blogs for some other great prizes, and remember to come back here a lot over the next few days to enter for some great prizes! The ten blogs that are a part of the Spring Fling include:

Quick Tattletails Still Blonde After all These years The Socialite’s Closet Stash Mama Momma Told Me
Turning the Clock Back Making Ends Meet My Life with Rats and More Confessions of an Overworked Mom Dad of Divas

Every person wants to take a vacation every now and again, and one of the large expenses when going far away is the airfare that you have to pay for! In honor of Summer coming soon and knowing that many of my readers are planning some fun getaways, I have partnered with Local Pages (www.localpages.com) to help one lucky family get some relief on their airfare for that upcoming trip. One lucky reader will be provided with $7 toward any restaurant found on Local Pages.

I have to say that prior to working with Local pages, I was not as aware of their services, but in reviewing the site, I was amazed at the amount of local coupons, discounts, and advertising that the site provided. The site also had a ton of shopping deals available also. If you haven’t checked out Local Pages, you definitely should today!

How would you like to win a copy of this giveaway?  All you need to do is be subscribed to Dad of Divas and then tell me about your favorite vacation, and link to Local Pages in their comment. The winning commenter will be awarded $75 toward the airline they found on our site.
