Learning So Much At the Springfield Museums in Springfield, Massachusetts

June 27, 2016 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

From Seuss to Science and Springfield History, the Springfield Museums offer a little bit to everyone when it comes to learning and family fun!

 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

On our recent trip to Springfield, Massachusetts we had the opportunity to visit the Springfield Museums to explore everything from Seuss to Science and more.

From Seuss to Science and Springfield History, the Springfield Museums offer a little bit to everyone when it comes to learning and family fun!

When you come into the Springfield Museums you are entering the Science museum and this museum has everything from aquariums to natural history, dinosaurs, and even a special exhibit on “The Scoop on Poop” which my girls loved and brought forth numerous jokes later too.

From Seuss to Science and Springfield History, the Springfield Museums offer a little bit to everyone when it comes to learning and family fun!

You have the ability to select any of the 3 other museums to explore. Our time was a bit limited so we chose to go to the fine arts museum as both my daughters are artists and they truly enjoyed seeing and experiencing artwork that ranged from pieces from the 1500’s to closer to present day. My oldest was excited to see a Picasso that was on display, while my wife and I were interested in seeing that the Springfield Museums had a special Kandinsky drawings exhibit that was currently on display.

One of the Springfield Museums that I found the most interesting was the one that was all about the history of Springfield, Massachusetts itself. I could have spent many more hours there reading and learning if we had the time. I had no clue that Springfield was such a hub for so much. From being the place where Milton Bradley started to having many well known munitions companies there along with the Springfield Armory which was the main location making the munitions for the U.S. military for many years. This on top of being the home of Friendly’s Ice Cream, the place where Shay’s Rebellion occurred and the home of Peerless Handcuffs and more. Springfield, Massachusetts was definitely home to many more things that I would have expected.

This included being the place where Dr. Seuss was born and raised for his early years. The last things that we did was visit the Seuss Sculpture Garden. The beautiful sculptures within the garden are ones that you will immediately recognize and are ones that at least for me put a smile on my face. As a family that loves Dr. Seuss, we may just have to come back in 2017 when the Springfield Museums is planning on opening a brand new museum just for Dr. Seuss himself!

The Springfield Museums are hidden gems within Springfield, Massachusetts and definitely worth the time!

Visiting the The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame

 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

My daughter plays basketball and I grew up loving the sport. This meant that visiting The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was a no-brainer when we knew that we were visiting Springfield, Massachusetts.

I did not realize the connection of Basketball and Springfield, Massachusetts until I explore the Basketball Hall of Fame and learned about the woman from Springfield, Massachusetts who started womens’ basketball after conferring more with Dr. Naismith himself.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame

As you are driving up the The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame you will note the iconic design of the exterior and it was this initially that placed a smile on Diva-J’s face, but it was the basketball courts that you first walk into that really got her heart pounding.

As I mentioned as you walk into The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame you walk onto a basketball court. The basketball court has displays of all backboards as they had been used in the past including the original basket made of peach baskets too. You could shoot on any of the baskets to try your hand at sinking a shot. They also had hoops of varying sizes set up to allow you to dunk on the hoops too.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame

Once we were complete with this we went up to the third floor to see all of the inductees within the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Talk about a very cool list of alumni. These are the greats in all of basketball history and they are all looking down on the basketball court action that is occurring below their gazes.

On the second floor was a huge array of memorabilia, games and more. On every floor though there was a ton of learning that could and did take place. I had forgotten that Bill Lanier, a Pistons great, was the basketball player with the largest shoes size, a size 22!

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was an amazing museum that will give you hours of learning and hours of fun for the whole family. Whether you love to play or just love to watch the sport you will leave this experience with a larger love of the sport and the athleticism that surrounds it too.

Our Thoughts on The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame

The 2016 Toyota Camry Hybrid Offers Great Fuel Economy, Comfort and More

A review of the 2016 Toyota Camry Hybrid

 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

We drove over to Manitowoc, Wisconsin in the new 2016 Toyota Camry Hybrid. This was a great car for this trip. Seeing that this trip was going to take us 820 miles roundtrip so having a vehicle that would give us the most bang for our buck when it came to gas made the most sense. While being in smaller vehicle for a longer roadtrip might not sound like fun, the Toyota Camry was a very comfortable ride. We consistently we getting about 38 miles per gallon and with a tank a bit larger than 13 gallons, we were able to easily get to and from Manitowoc on 2 tanks of gas (as we were getting about 510 miles on a tank of gas).

A review of the 2016 Toyota Camry Hybrid

The Toyota Camry has a ton of great safety features that I definitely look for for my own family. On top of this, the sound system was great and the overall comfort in the vehicle was top notch too. I did a walk around on this great vehicle and made a video so that you can explore the 2016 Toyota Camry for yourself too!

On top of all of this the Toyota Camry Hybrid comes in at a pricetag that will be reasonable for many. Being under $40,000 you are getting a ton of value on a vehicle that holds its value and keeps on giving for years to come!

Manitowoc, A Lakeside Town With Hidden Gems

Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a city on the shores of Lake Michigan. This is a city with a ton of things to do and a ton of heart!

Manitowoc, A Lakeside Town With Hidden Gems

This past weekend my family and I visited Manitowoc, Wisconsin. For those of you that have never been there before, it is about 30 miles south of Green Bay and for us it took about 6.5 hours to drive around the lake to get there.

The Harbor Town Inn in Manitowoc, Wisconsin

The Harbor Town Inn in Manitowoc, Wisconsin

We had the opportunity to stay at the Harbor Town Inn while we were here which is one of the Flannery Hotels. We partnered with this great location while we were here, and let me tell you we were really impressed with the facility and the rooms that they offered us. The Harbor Town Inn has a long history in the city of Manitowoc and while it was a Super 8 and a Thrifty Scot over the past years, it was recently renovated and you can tell that the owners put a lot of time and money into the look and feel of the Inn.

The Harbor Town Inn offers reasonably priced rooms that are well furnished, along with a great breakfast and even some very nice areas for socializing and reconnecting. We found the staff to be very friendly and very willing to offer many suggestions for travelers on things to do, places to eat and more, making the stay even nicer.

While the Inn is located off of a main road the noise was minimal in the evening and we really found it to be a very comfortable stay and for the price and amenities you cannot go wrong.

I made a quick video to explore the Harbor Town Inn Even Further. I hope you will give it a glance and see what I am talking about and frequent it when you next come to Manitowoc!

Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a city on the shores of Lake Michigan. This is a city with a ton of things to do and a ton of heart!

While we were in Manitowoc, we explored the city and found so many amazing things. From the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, which had its own submarine, the USS Cobia, a WWII submarine that you could go in. Just be aware if you do go into this, it is very confined! The museum itself though is so amazing and really allows you to come to a better appreciation of Maritime History.

Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a city on the shores of Lake Michigan. This is a city with a ton of things to do and a ton of heart!

We also explored the shops and restaurants of downtown Manitowoc. There were a number of great restaurants including the Courthouse Pub (one of our favorites) and a number of others too. We also satisfied our sweet tooth while downtown by visiting Beernsten’s Confectionary, a chocolatier that has been in Manitowoc since 1932. While we did not eat chocolate, we did partake in some ice cream that they are known for as it was a particularly hot day!

The Manitowoc Public Library is Amazing!

Just down the street from Beernsten’s was the Manitowoc Public Library. As many of you know my wife is a librarian, so we had to check out the library. Holy cow, this community must love to read with a library as beautiful as this library was. I can only dream of having a library with so many resources and so many books! The children’s section was so inviting and even my oldest mentioned that she would hang out there instead of in the Teen section! It was such a breath of fresh air to see so much pride being place in a community resource.

The Manitowoc Public Library is Amazing!

The interesting thing that you find when you are visiting the lakeshore on this side of Lake Michigan is that you have a much rockier shore than what you have in Michigan, but it is still a beautiful lake and a beautiful area.

Beernsten's Confectionary is a true treasure in Manitowoc Wisconsin

While this town definitely has a blue collar feel, the pride in the town and the friendliness of the people would bring me back in a heartbeat.

This may not be the largest tourist destination in Wisconsin, I would still put it up on a list of places to visit for anyone! Even if you want to have a unique experience, you could drive to Manitowoc and then take the S.S. Badger Car Ferry over to Ludington, Michigan (They have a movie theater on the boat!).

Beernsten's Confectionary is a true treasure in Manitowoc Wisconsin

Manitowoc, Wisconsin is a wonderful town that everyone should come to visit!

Getting a Great Deal Is Only A Click Away With Groupon

July 14, 2015 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

groupon
 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

As a parent and living in a home where money counts, I am always looking for ways to save a little bit of money while still being able to get out and have fun with my wife and my kids. Sometimes we do this through free activities, and sometimes we splurge. However, it is nice when you can simply find a site where you can find fun places to go or eat and still save money too and this is why I have loved using Groupon in the past and continue to use it today.

I first became aware of Groupon as a site a few years ago. I was going to a new city and a friend of mine told me about the site and said that I should check it out. I did, and found a ton of great offerings in the city where I was going to get money off of meals and even a few local attractions. What could be better. The site was secure and easy to purchase from. Over the years the site has continued to grow, and it is not just localized content now, but they also have content that is national in scope and covers consumer good to restaurants to hotels and more. You even can get Groupon cash for some offers, so you save even more money by spending money!

groupon

On a recent family vacation to Niagara falls we used Groupon to book a hotel deal. I had been looking online at a lot of the other travel websites and found that the deal being offered on Groupon was the best and it came with some other great perks including some meals and the ability of getting into a few attractions – so we signed up and it was a great stay!

One of the final things that I wanted to say today about Groupon is to stress that it also is a great way to get out on a date night every now and again. For my wife and I with the hectic scheduled that we have, it is nice to be able to save a bit of money on a nice meal as we know we will be spending money on a babysitter too. So having Groupon deals that are local to us is important and a nice splurge every now and again – as you cannot forget to rekindle your own relationship every now and again!

Groupon-Coupons

What’s even better is that there is a new service called Groupon Coupons that they just launched. Groupon has partnered with more than 8,600 national retailers to bring you amazing deals right to your inbox! It’s a completely free way for shoppers to find thousands of coupons and exclusive promo codes from stores like Macy’s, Expedia, eBay, Nike, and more.

If you have never checked out Groupon you should, as I think you will find, like I did, that there is a ton of deals just waiting to be found!

A Family Trip to Alcúdia, Mallorca #travel #dadchat

September 26, 2014 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

A Family Trip to Alcúdia, Mallorca

A historic, palm-fringed town on the island of Mallorca, Alcúdia has been a hit with vacationing families since the first tourists arrived there, suitcases in tow, in the 1920s. In the 70s it experienced a major boom, and has since thrived from a tiny fishing village to a bustling resort with tourism as its principal economy, and over one million visitors annually. So what is it that makes this little idyll so worthy of attention?

It’s inexpensive

When you’re looking after a young family, every penny is a prisoner. Fortunately, the Balearics are a popular destination for people looking to save money on their getaway, and plenty of competition usually equates to cheap holidays.  The main strip offers price-conscious restaurants and bars, geared around offering family-friendly entertainment, and accommodation is very affordable.

S'Albufera-Natural-Park

It’s a natural beauty

S’Albufera Natural Park lies just to the south of the town, a protected belt of dunes and wetland which is home to a whopping 271 species of birds. While it’s free to visit, a permit is required which must be applied for in advance. Especially with older children, exploring the 12 kilometer trail by bike can make for a rewarding day’s excursion. There are also horse trek tours through the mountainside that will delight equestrians.

You can discover the vestiges of an empire

The principal Roman city of Pollentia (Roman for ‘power’) was founded in 123BC, and its site is still being excavated. Visitors to the area can explore the forum, theater and living areas which were constructed in prime vantage of the bay. Then, visit the Pollentia Monographic Museum to view the many artefacts that have been recovered so far.

Alcúdia-Mallorca

The beach is blinding

White sands and clean waters make this 14 kilometer strip of beach a treat for visitors. Hire a sunbed for four euros, or enjoy drinks in one of the many cafes that fringe the waterside. Tour the bay and nearby coves in a glass-bottomed catamaran, or hire a kayak and chart your own path through the waves.

Natural beauty, adventure and history make Alcúdia a jackpot location that’s easy on the wallet. With its extensive range of entertainment options for kids old and young, it might just be the star attraction of the Balearics for family vacations.

A Good Vacation is a Safe Vacation #dadchat

June 11, 2014 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

MR GRISWOLD

A Good Vacation is a Safe Vacation

We’ve all seen the classic vacation movies starring Chevy Chase. We know how fun and exciting a good road trip can be. But that series of movies is not the last word on family and buddy road trips.

My personal favorite is the Sponge Bob movie. Perhaps you bend more towards Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, or Little Miss Sunshine. Whatever Hollywood inspired fantasy comes to mind when you think of a road trip, they all have at least one thing in common: They all present an element of danger and a brush with the unexpected.

What those movies do not realistically depict is the aftermath of the calamities that seem so riotously hilarious at the time. Nobody walks away from a car flipping over three times. The grill that blows up in your face after dowsing it with three cans of lighter fluid is seriously going to blow your face off. The bar fight you got into with the Hell’s Angels after knocking over a row of vintage motorcycles is going to leave you injured, and in the hospital for a very long time. When you get out, everything is not going to be all right.

So before taking that two day road trip to Fun World on the opposite coast, let’s take a brief moment to be sure that the worst annoyance your family experiences is the 100th repetition of, “This is the song that never ends.”

Cars and Coffee Lineup

Auto accidents

Fully one in five people suffer some kind of injury on a vacation. Driving is only the second leading cause. Personal Injury Digest reports:

  • 6 million – average number of car accidents every year.
  • 3 million people are injured every year in car accidents in America.
  • Around 2 million drivers experience permanent injuries every year from car accidents.
  • 40,000 people lose their lives every year due to major accidents while driving.

Familiarizing yourself with the features of the car you will be driving can mitigate these risks. Swap drivers frequently to insure plenty of rest for each driver. Take plenty of potty breaks to keep unspoken frustrations from building. And keep the number of a good accident attorney handy in case statistics catch up with you. Mike Pines, an expert from San Diego, lists over a dozen types of personal injury claims in the San Diego area.

Arty food

Food poisoning

Auto accidents are the second leading cause of calamity on vacation. The number one cause is food poisoning. It is said that we suffer from food poisoning all the time. It is just that the symptoms are often so mild, we ignore them and move on. Vacation eating is quite different from day to day eating. On vacation, we try things that we normally would not try, and eat at questionable places that we would never eat at locally.

Depending on where we vacation, those stomach cramps after that double spicy pepper sandwich may not just be due to the fact that it was double spicy peppers we were eating. Restaurants that cater to tourists might tend to take short cuts in food safety for the sake of feeding more people, faster, and cheaper. If you are not familiar with the lay of the land, seek reputable local recommendations. If the locals don’t eat there, neither should you.

English: Rock climbing on Wharncliffe crag

Dangerous activities

Everyday, the ER fills up with people injured in ways they would rather not talk about. They are ashamed to accurately recount the details of how they came to be injured because they were doing something epically stupid. For some reason, people see vacation time as the perfect opportunity to try something that, on another day, they would consider epically stupid.

There is nothing particularly stupid about skiing unless you are afraid of heights and have a terrible sense of balance, and poor depth perception. At that point, you should really be questioning why you are strapping on those skis. Is rock climbing really a good fit for your vertigo? Does a second trip on the levitating, triple loop roller coaster make sense with your blood pressure?

There is nothing wrong with trying something new. But we should never trade in common sense for a momentary good time. That is almost always a bad trade. If the activity is something you wouldn’t do on a Monday when you are stone cold sober, you shouldn’t do on a Saturday when intoxicated with the bad judgment typically displayed while on vacation. Your hand-eye coordination and reflexes are not better when on vacation.

A good vacation is a safe vacation. You will not have less fun because you drove safely, ate wisely, and skipped walking over hot coals with your bare feet.
