Stephen Kendrick is senior associate pastor of preaching and prayer at Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. He is also a screenwriter (Facing the Giants, Fireproof, Courageous) and movie producer and co-wrote the New York Times best sellers The Love Dare and The Resolution for Men with his brother, Alex. Stephen and his wife, Jill, have four children.

Alex Kendrick is associate pastor of movie outreach for Sherwood Baptist Church. He is also an actor, writer, and director whose film credits include Facing the Giants, Fireproof, and Courageous. He and his wife, Christina, have six children.

My Take on the Book

I have read and practiced the Love Dare for Couples in the past and found this book to be a great book to read and share with my spouse. In reading through this book I have to say that the authors have done a great job again in putting together a book that will allow you to learn and grown as a couple (if you are a two family parent unit) while being better parents to your children.

The book has some amazing things within it that will help you in better parenting your children that are both practical in nature and spiritual as well. The book allows you to gain a better understand for what your role is as a parent, not only in the eyes of your children =, but also in the eyes of God.

This is a book that will challenge you while motivating and encouraging you to do and be a better parent. I know that I learned so much and am still learning as I go through the 40 day journey myself and you will too!

CD Review – Furious ( @vineyardmusic )

September 23, 2011 by dadofdivas 57 Comments

About the CD

Vineyard Worship artist and worship leader Jeremy Riddle has announced the release of his new studio album entitled, Furious. The album is set for release on September 20 via NewDay Distribution.

Riddle began production on the album nearly a year ago with Dove Award winning producer Ed Cash (Chris Tomlin, Matthew West, David Crowder Band) at the helm. Cash’s contribution forms the backbone of the album which also features production from Bobby Hartry, a long time Riddle collaborator. The project follows Prepare The Way: Live, an album recorded in front of a live audience in Corpus Christi, Tex., earlier this year from Vineyard.

Riddle describes Furious saying, “It’s hard to come up with words that depict the magnitude of Christ’s love – the depth and width of it. Furious doesn’t work outside of the context of love; we tend to translate the word as angry, but I see it as a super-powerful force; stronger, deeper, broader than our vocabulary can fully describe.”

Four years on the road as a touring worship leader eventually took its toll on Jeremy, so in January 2011, the former jr. high youth pastor came on staff as worship community pastor at Bethel Church in Redding, Calif. Working under pastors Brian and Jenn Johnson, Jeremy facilitates a worship community of over 200 people within the church.

“My wife (Katie) and I have always had a heart to serve the local church and never wanted to do the full-time travel thing for very long, so it felt like a good time to transition into something different,” Jeremy says. “I’ve developed such an appreciation for the fruit that has been sowed from my life – personally and artistically – by being part of a local community.”

Consequently, several of the tracks on Furious are also featured on Be Lifted High, the most recent album from Bethel Church.

“These songs are a reflection of being part of something bigger than just me,” Jeremy says. “Through some significant growth in understanding and living out humility from a very independent place, I’ve shifted into a place where I can’t even claim this record is completely inspired by me. There are so many elements of the album that could never have flowed from me had I not been connected to people walking out life with me.”

My Take on the CD

The CD contains twelve Christian songs. They are upbeat and speak of God’s love.
Some of the songs reflect how God’s love is deep, wide, strong and glorious , and He calls us as His sons and daughters to live our lives in His Word. In the same vein , God’s love never fades and He never gives up on us. We have an assurance that there is no fear in the light of God’s love for us.

Jeremy sings songs of worship and praise to God. He reminds us that everything we have is because of God’s love for us.

Other songs speak of God’s son Jesus. The songs remind us of the love of Jesus. How He died on the cross for us and was always faithful to his Father.
The song “THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD”, takes the popular scripture verse and reminds us that each day we choose how we will spend our day and what kind of choices we will make. The song encourages us to choose God’s way. Look to the Bible to find the source of how we should spend each breathing moment of our lives. A life that is given to us by God through the sacrifice of His only son Jesus.

The CD is easy to listen to and the words will lift you up in the celebration of being Christian and living the life  God has planned for you.

This DVD provides the viewer an amazing Easter story for all to view. Over the years I have seen many renditions of this story, but this is the first unique one that I have seen that I have wanted to watch over and over. What was different in this DVD was the incorporation of artistic impression throughout the DVD.

This DVD was infused with beautiful chalk art that you do not usually see. My girls loved watching this DVD and asked many questions after watching it and I was happy to watch it with them and be able to answer their questions.
Outside of the DVD itself were wonderful art lessons that provide step-by-step instruction in using chalk pastels, creative lettering and using water colors. These lessons combine spirituality and the bible with art and the lessons were very easy to follow and learn from.
I highly recommend this DVD to all!

Book Review – The Butterfly Effect by Andy Andrews

September 13, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

“Everything thing you do matters. You have been created as one of a kind. You have been created in order to make a difference. You have within you the power to change the world”, by Andy Andrews.
With this quote I would like to discuss this book.

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a Colonel in the US army , led Union soldiers in the battle at Gettysburg , during the Civil War. The effect of the decisions by this courageous man would affect the world. His decision to charge against the South when the outcome was bleak changed the history of our US history.

If he had lost the battle we would have had a spilt nation. If that had occurred our nation would not have been strong enough to stand up to the adversity in WW I and Hitler in WW II. His bravery and courage created the butterfly effect which rippled into our world to bring about the United States of America and the principles we want to continue to live by today.
    Joshua was a catalyst.

So what about you and me? You may not think what you do matters , but it does . Every action you make affects your family, friends, your work community, and even your community . Your actions can change the future of those around you.

We still reap the benefits and feel the effects of George Washington Carver. His butterfly affect created changes in how we looked at how we used peanuts and sweet potatoes. We now have over 266 ways to use peanuts and 88 ways to use sweet potatoes because of this man.

However did you know that this man and his mother were kidnapped by robbers when he was a baby. His neighbors negotiated his release and he was almost dead, but they took him in and adopted him as their own. Look at the butterfly affect that these two people who fought for the life of this baby created.

So do you matter? YOU DO have a special purpose in this world. Your actions have value.
“Your life and what you do with it today . . . .matters forever , ” Andy Stanley

Example: an application to each person’s life who reads this

Think about your actions. Did you help someone in trouble at some point? Did you listen to someone who you later found out may have been so depressed they did not want to live but you gave them hope?

On the other hand: Did you lie to someone and that lie caused other events that are still being played out today? Did you take something that did not belong to you and you see that person grieve the loss today still? Were you so proud and your ego so important to you that you did not care what you did to get what you wanted and the ripples of that decision are stretching over years and years?

Yes both good and bad can happen with The Butterfly Effect. How are your actions and words from the past or present affecting your present and even the future? Think about that.

If this book sounds like something you would like in your own library you can find it on Amazon!

September 7, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Each of us in our own way live with purpose. What we mean about purpose differs as each of us differ. I have been lucky enough over the last two months to be working on a project with DaySpring that has people like you and me talking about what it means to both Go Back to School with Purpose as well as Living with Purpose. Also, DaySpring has done a great thing in reaching out to and is working with Adopt-A-Classroom to support students and teachers as begin another school year.

Book Review – The Heavens Proclaim His Glory: A Spectacular View of Creation Through the Lens of the NASA Hubble Telescope

August 29, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

    About the Book
“I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how he could look up into the heavens and say there is no God.” Abraham Lincoln

Our world displays the handiwork of God all around us—in the land and sea, the animals and the plants. But in respect to the sky, the heavens, the universe…there’s a realm of beauty and creation man has not been able to witness, until now. The Heavens Proclaim His Glory is a compilation of stunning photography taken by NASA’s Hubble® Telescope capturing striking images of stars, galaxies, cosmic events, planets, and more. Vivid up-close photographs are paired with a romantic Psalm or quote, as well as a short description of the image. The Heavens will open up a whole new world of worship and praise for our God.
Contributors include: Francis Chan, Mike Huckabee, John MacArthur, Stephen Mansfield, Sarah Young, Max Lucado, Jenna Lucado, Henry & Richard Blackaby, Robert Morgan, Kirk Cameron, Homer Hickam, and more.

    My Take on the Book
When I have seen pictures from the Hubble Telescope in the past I have always been amazed at the beauty that is always captured. Whenever I saw these images I always felt that, just like this book, that God had to have a hand in the overall creation of this beauty.

When I was given the opportunity to review this book from Thomas Nelson I was excited to see what the authors had come up with. When I received the book I was amazed to find a list of great authors such as Francis Chan, John MacArthur, Stephen Young, and Max Lucado contributing.

The book lived up to my expectations. The images were breathtaking and the writing that went with them fit so well, I could not of thought of any better words to fit.

I thought that the images alone would keep my attention, but I was surprised that I found that the images and words equally drew me in and engaged me as a reader. This book is a wonderful gift or addition to any home, don’t miss out!

Whether you are a Christian or not, you will appreciate the beauty in this book.

If you would like to have this book as a part of your own library you can find it on Amazon!

All opinions expressed in this review are my own and not influenced in any way by the company.  Any product claim, statistic, quote or other representation about a product or service should be verified with the manufacturer or provider. Book Review – Cast of Characters

July 7, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

    About the Book
Some of the most powerful stories from the Bible will come alive for today’s readers through these inspiring selections from the writings of Max Lucado. Max provides a compelling look at the most high-impact moments in the biblical narrative, drawn from his previous 20+ years of writing.

At the end of each chapter will be study guide questions so the reader can go deeper into this
    scripture.

Extraordinary stories are told about the following characters:
Mary, Peter, Matthew, Joseph, Nicodemus, Woman at the Well, David, Esther, Job, The Samaritan Woman, John, Rich Young Man.

    My Take on The Book
I have read many books that talk about spirituality and the characters that you find within the Bible itself, but this book is one of the first that really drew me into the book as this book did. The author did a commendable job at getting his readers to know and understand some of the known and not so know characters within the bible.

What would the Samaritan woman be thinking as Jesus approached her? Why would Moses listen to God’s voice? Max Lucado takes classic Bible stories and adds his own touch, his own story to the mix and also adds historical detail in the context of what you read.

I loved this book and believe that you would to. While this book could easily be used for bible study, you also will gain a lot of insights into your own understanding of the Bible and its’ characters by reading this as well. Each chapter is easy to read and engaging. They draw you in and encouraging you to read even more of the stories, expanding your own knowledge of the Bible itself.

If this book sounds like something you would like in your own library you can find it over at Amazon!

Book Review – Apologetics Study Bible

May 22, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

    About the Book
To help them articulate their beliefs, B&H Publishing Group releases a student edition of their popular Apologetics Study Bible, which has sold more than 115,000 copies. The Apologetics Study Bible for Students gives young people straight answers to the hardest questions being asked of them: “Why do you think Christianity is true?” “Why does God allow evil?” “How can Christians say that Jesus is the only way to God?”

Youth ministry experts say students today simply aren’t well-grounded in the truths of scripture, especially when it comes to answering the toughest questions about Christianity. Edited by Sean McDowell, a well-known teacher of apologetics, the Apologetics Study Bible for Students features more than 120 new articles including personal stories, special features on apologetics and tactics for handling frequently heard anti-Christian arguments. Jeremy Howard serves as the Managing Acquisitions Editor of Bibles, Reference Books, and Commentaries at B&H Publishing Group and is the publisher of The Apologetics Study Bible for Students. He worked alongside the nation’s most notable experts in the field of apologetics in the production of this newest edition.

    Discussion points:

    • Why a rise in mainstream atheism has left many young Christians speechless
    • Why many students have a hard time articulating what they believe and why
    •  How to answer the toughest questions from critics of Christianity
    • Apologetics 101: Giving teens the confidence to stand up for what they believe

    My Take on the Book

In regards to bibles, I found this text to be a pretty literal translation that is written in a way to draw in the young adult. This translation has  a ton of relevant information and stories that it shares to make it readable to young adults as well as facts that try and boggle their minds. I liked the fact that this Bible has a ton of articles built in that are written with the reader in mind. The articles are only one page each so it gives you the run down on everything but also makes you think along the way!

I liked the “Twisted Scripture” notes and found them to be particularly interesting for me and I would guess for young readers for whom the Bible is intended.

Overall, I would highly recommend this study Bible to people who want to get to know the Bible more and relate better to the words professed within, regardless of age.

Book Review – The Heart Mender

May 14, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

    About the Book

The Heart Mender tells the story of a German U Boat officer who is betrayed for refusing to kill Americans while sinking supply ships destined for Europe in the Gulf of Mexico during in 1942.  Shot by a fanatical Nazi and left for dead at sea, he washes ashore in Alabama.  A beautiful young woman, whose husband had been killed by the Germans in the war, finds his near lifeless body.  The enraged and shocked woman is prepared to leave him to die but after hearing him say an unusual phrase in his delirium, she changes her mind and hides him while he recovers and tries to elude capture.
The stage is now set for two people forced together on a collision path that takes them on careening through action and mystery packed sequences of life, danger, loss, and devastation.  Together they explore the excruciating pain of their respective past lives and deal with treachery and the threat of discovery in a tense struggle for survival that ultimately brings them face to face with the most crucial decision of their lives.
In The Heart Mender, Andy Andrews’ entertaining story telling skills and inspirational talents are once again unleashed and he presents the most powerful lessons of life.
He shows us how it is possible for people to overcome anger and hate.
The Heart Mender is a mesmerizing masterpiece of adventure and intrigue that points a way to a new era of peace, hope and happiness for all of humanity.
Andy Andrews delivers an important message to all of us at a crucial time-the power of forgiveness and the universal healing that can be achieved only by letting go.
The world will be a better place if we can put this wonderful lesson into practice.
Andy Andrews says you forgive for you – it is simply the greatest gift you can give to yourself.
“There is not a shred of evidence from any expert or book-including the Bible, by the way-that demands a person ask for forgiveness, deserve forgiveness, or even be cognizant of the process for forgiveness before you can forgive them.
Forgive and forget is not reality. Forgiveness does not erase history or excuse what happened.
Forgiveness means relinquishment. It is that simple.  It means giving something up.  You simply give up whatever power it holds over us.  If you forgive somebody for something he or she did to you, that means you choose to never again allow that event to determine how you feel or how you act or even how you treat that person.  You may remember the wrong, but by choosing to forgive, you have disarmed it.  Then it can no longer determine what you think, what you say, or what you do.”

    About the Author

Andy Andrews, hailed by a New York Times writer as someone who has quietly become “one of the most influential people in America,” is a best-selling novelist and in-demand corporate speaker for the world’s largest organizations. The Traveler’s Gift, a featured book selection of ABC’s Good Morning America, has been translated into nearly twenty languages and was on the New York Times bestseller list for seventeen weeks.
Andy has spoken at the request of four different United States presidents and toured military bases around the world, being called upon by the Department of Defense to speak to the troops. Arguably, there is no single person on the planet better at weaving subtle yet life-changing lessons into riveting tales of adventure and intrigue—both on paper and on stage.  He lives in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with his wife, Polly, and their two sons.
    What People Are Saying
“The Heart Mender is a sweeping adventure filled with many emotions.  The compelling narrative unites the past and the present in a fantastic must read!
Bonnie Tiegel, Senior Supervising Producer, Entertainment Tonight & The Insider
“The principle woven into this incredible story has changed my life.”
Tim Brando, CBS Sports Host and Commentator
“With the skill of a virtuoso, Andy Andrews continues his string of successful writing performances in this, his latest entertaining masterpiece.  The plot, characters, and storyline combine to summon the reader into an unforgettable experience.”
Robert Silvers, Executive Publisher, The Saturday Evening Post

    My Take on The Book
I had never read any novels by Andy Andrews in the past so I didn’t know what to expect. I found the book to engaging and filled with much historical fact.

As a person who enjoys adventure historical fiction, this book was one that I really enjoyed. As a reader I came to find myself connecting with the characters and the author does a good job at creating vivid images that draw the reader even further in to the world surrounding the 1940’s.

I can say that I was engrossed in the story and found that I did not want to put it down, which for me is the sign of a great book!

I will mention that I have seen some other reviews that compare this story to another of a different name and they question whether this and the other are the same books? I cannot comment on that as I have not read the other account and as of this time I have not hear nor found any substantiation of this claim.

So if this book sounds like one that you might like for your own collection you can find it on Amazon!
