Office Depot Foundation National Backpack Program Celebrates 15th Year

August 3, 2015 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Office-Depot
For the past 15 years, the Office Depot Foundation has been giving children important tools they need to succeed in school – and in life – at the beginning of the new school year.

This year is no exception.  In 2015, the Foundation – the independent charitable giving arm of Office Depot ® – is celebrating the 15th year of its award-winning National Backpack Program by donating 200,000 colorful new sackpacks to nonprofit organizations, schools and agencies across the United States and internationally.

By the end of 2015, Office Depot and the Office Depot Foundation will have given away more than 3.7 million backpacks and sackpacks since the National Backpack Program began in 2001.

“For most children, the first day of school is an exciting time complete with new clothes and back-to-school gear,” says Office Depot Foundation President Mary Wong.  “But for kids in families where money is tight, the experience can be just the opposite.  We believe that every child should have the opportunity to go to school with dignity and hope.  The sackpacks and school supplies we donate help to level the playing field and give these wonderful children a reason to stand just a little bit taller.”

To distribute sackpacks directly to children, the Foundation is hosting Back-to-School Celebrations in some 20 cities across the U.S. in July and August.  This week, 18,000+ new sackpacks are being donated through events in Atlanta, San Francisco, New Orleans and Indianapolis.  In New Orleans alone, the Office Depot Foundation has donated more than 50,000 backpacks and sackpacks to children in the decade since Hurricane Katrina.

Thousands more sackpacks are being given to kids through the Office Depot Foundation’s continuing partnerships with nine nonprofit organizations serving children nationally and globally. The Foundation is collaborating with the AARP Experience Corps, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA), the National Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Association, Feed the Children, Food For The Poor, the Kids In Need Foundation, the National Foundation for Women Legislators, Operation Homefront and Samaritan’s Feet International. For the seventh consecutive year, children of the Navajo Nation in Arizona will receive sackpacks.

The specially designed, drawstring-style sackpacks come in seven bright and colorful designs that are new for 2015.  Each one includes a zippered pouchcontaining a pen, pencil, pencil sharpener, eraser, six-inch ruler and four crayons. The sackpacks do not have any Office Depot Foundation or Office Depot logos or markings.

More information about the National Backpack Program can be found on the Foundation’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/officedepotfoundation. To learn more about the Office Depot Foundation and its initiatives, go to www.officedepotfoundation.org/. You can follow the Foundation on Twitter @OfficeDepotFndn; the National Backpack Program’s hashtag is #ODFcares.  The Foundation is also on Instagram: @officedepotfoundation.

About the Office Depot Foundation

The Office Depot Foundation is an independent foundation ? tax exempt under IRC Sec. 501(c)(3) ? that serves as the independent charitable giving arm of Office Depot, Inc. In keeping with its mission, Listen Learn Care®, the Foundation supports a variety of programs that give children tools to succeed in school and in life; build the capacity of nonprofit organizations through collaboration and innovation; and help communities prepare for disasters, as well as recovering and rebuilding afterwards.  For more information, visit www.officedepotfoundation.org.

#School, #Curriculum, #Kids, and How WE #Parents Fit at #DadChat

October 20, 2014 by dadofdivas 1 Comment

#dadchat-SchoolToday

When I went to elementary school (a few years back), my parents had little to do or worry about when I headed out the door. In fact, they had little to worry about after school as well because I rode my bike wherever I wanted as long as I got home before dark. Mom made sure I knew who to call and how to call “just in case” I needed to call home. These days, it’s just a tad bit different!

Common Core, Home Schooling, Political Correct History, Politics in the classroom, No Tolerance, Self-Esteem, and EVERYONE gets a trophy is the new world of primary school. How do we parents navigate this “new world” if, GULP, we have values or concerns about life and, BIGGER GULP, even are religious?! What if we have a kid with “challenges” – can we count on the schools for help? Do we EVEN DARE to discuss the horrors of Middle and High School? That’s why we have noted clinical psychologist Margot Holloman and her husband, Andy Holloman, writer, father of three, and just coincidentally Margot’s husband as our co-hosts this Thursday, October 26 at 6:00 p.m. PT/9:00 p.m. ET.

MargotHolloman

Dr. Holloman is a Clinical Psychologist located in Apex, North Carolina. She attended the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated from U.C. with Honors and received the Arthur G. Bills Award for Excellence in Research. She began graduate school at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in School Psychology. After making the decision she wanted to work primarily with therapy clients, she transferred to The University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she received her Masters and Doctoral Degrees in Clinical Psychology.

She has worked in private practice in the Raleigh area since 1997. She currently specializes in anxiety and depression across the lifespan. More recently, she has developed a strong interest in treatment methods for ADHD in children and adults. She has always loved positive psychology including how one develops resilience despite difficult childhoods or adversity in one’s current circumstances. Her research interests also primarily focused on developing and maintaining positive self-esteem.

She currently works full time with individual clients and is developing several workshops designed to facilitate the participant’s development of healthy habits for greater happiness and success. These workshops will focus on the ability to establish more authentic, meaningful, and satisfying paths throughout our lives.

Dr. Holloman is married and has three teen and preteen children. She loves dogs, gardening, reading, music, photography, scrapbooking and anything crafty or creative. She has recently discovered genealogy and may need an intervention to stay off of Ancestry.com. She is currently dabbling in woodworking and loves to decorate. She has recently learned how to use wordpress and first became confident about her computer skills through learning photoshop elements. Her guilty pleasures include spider solitaire, So You Think You Can Dance, and reading self-help books

AndyHolloman

Writer Andy Holloman has been scribbling stories since a young age. (According to reliable sources.) Shades of Gray is his first published novel and grew out of his experiences as a travel agency owner many moons ago. He was fascinated with the true story of a client of the business that was murdered. Suspecting her line of work was drug smuggling, a story sprouted in his over-active imagination – How far would a desperate person go to save their child and their business.

His 2nd novel When His Dreams Take Flight was published in Oct. 2013 and is a Suspense/Thriller novel set in present day North Carolina.

He is the father of three and happily married for 20 years. A graduate of UNC-CH, he lives in the Raleigh, NC area and is busy carpooling, keeping his wife happy, and attending his kids sporting events. He loves the great outdoors in NC, is an avid reader, and a social media goofball. Most evenings, he can be found tapping on his well-worn keyboard as he “births” his next novel. It’s Time for School With Chasing Fireflies ( @chasenfireflies ) #CFSchoolCool

August 22, 2013 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

When it comes time to get ready to go back to school, our kids want to look their best! No matter if that means clothes, shoes or other accessories, they want to be ready (no matter how much they fight us to get ready). I am always at a loss when it comes to knowing exactly what to get the kids it is nice when I can have a site the brings some hot back to school items together all in one place and Chasing Fireflies has done just that with their Back to School Pinterest Page – http://pinterest.com/chasingfireflie/back-to-school-2013/

PJ-Shoes

I was asked to select two items from this page to try out with my own kids and I actually got the kids involved in the selection (as I did not want to hear that I chose the wrong items). My youngest daughter will be going to kindergarten this year and she has been growing like a weed over the past six months, so we really needed shoes. What was great about these personalized Converse shoes that you see to the top and bottom her is that they are personalized, and anyone that has young kids know that sometimes kids have similar shoes and having the child’s name on them just helps that much more. I was impressed with how quickly the shoes arrived after ordering, especially with personalization and they were of such high quality!

PJ-Shoes1

My eldest is always the more difficult one to shop for. For her she helped me select the Watch it Change watches that you see at the top of the post and below. This watch was great and was definitely a hit with Diva-J as first off she is always running late (so a watch was needed), but even better in her book were the different ribbons that the watch comes with that act as the watch band for the watch itself. So far she has really loved changing out the bands depending on what she was wearing and having a blast looking grown up with a grown up watch too. I loved the fact that Diva-J actually now has a watch, so I can tell her to be home by a certain time and she can’t tell me that she didn’t have a watch or was unaware of the time itself.
watch1

All-in-all I was impressed with the Back-to-school items that Chasing Fireflies offers as that are unique and different, which are two traits that both my daughters seem to enjoy! On top of this Chasing Fireflies also has a ton of amazing Halloween Costumes if you are in the market or are starting to plan early! Check out the selections here – http://www.chasing-fireflies.com/costumes/departments/46/

Say Goodbye to Blah Lockers With LockerLookz

August 15, 2013 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

LockerLookz
 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

The look of happiness in a tween girl’s eye is when the class bell rings and she rushes to her locker, opens it and smiles. She’s got LockerLookz™. It’s the hottest trend sweeping junior high halls according to a recent TODAY Show segment, not to mention tween and teen girls. Because the pre-algebra book, social studies paper and lunch bag are nestled inside her home away from home. Her locker is decked out with purple zebra wallpaper, a lush purple shag rug and a matching white board and mirror. All at a price way cheaper than a pair of her new pair of jeans! See what’s inside lockers the chicest lockers this year from LockerLookz.

Just like a girl’s bedroom wallpaper and bedspread convey whom she is (or hopes to be) so can a school locker decorated with wallpaper, bins, whiteboard, light fixture and thick carpet — in miniature of course! LockerLookz takes accessorizing a step further with the addition of clocks, curtains and valances for the It locker look!

LockerLookz

Targeted for girls ages 8-14, the LockerLookz line of locker décor was based on solid research and prices range from $6.99 to $24.99. Their fashionable products allow young girls to express themselves and pass the price test (affordable) and the peer test (adorable). Their website, www.LockerLookz.com, allows not only high fashion shopping but a virtual locker where girls can instantly mix and match products to get a perfect look. Their 2013 Collection includes glamorous wallpapers to complement matching or contrasting whiteboards, mirrors, rugs, bins and jeweled flower magnets. Add to that more décor trends to express the tween-age years—clocks, bow & key magnets, curtains and valances!

Fresh LockerLookz accessories will hit stores by July 1 for back-to-school summer shoppers. The company’s unique wallpapers are all original creations, hand-drawn by an illustrator, and then printed for distribution. Creative Child magazine judged early samples of the line and promptly gave the line its top honors with its 2012 Creative Play of the Year Award for Preteens category and its 2012 Kids Product of the Year Award for Kids Décor category, and Tillywig Awards gave the full line its Top Fun nod in its summer award program.

My Take on the Product

This is the first year that my eldest daughter will have her own locker and she is SO excited. With that in mind and knowing how drab those lockers can be I was excited to be asked to take a look at products from this company as LockerLookz really does an amazing job at making a locker look completely different. Seeing that my daughter is a bit of a girlie girl, she loved the bright colors to choose from and she loved all of the accessories that she would choose from too. For me, I was just happy that she was excited about the product itself! The products are of high quality and I do not foresee any problems with making these fit nicely in the locker itself (once it has been assigned). We still have a few weeks, but now that my daughter has seen these products she cannot wait to put it together for herself.  Until then she has been having a blask playing with the interactive LockerLookz website, where she has been able to design her own locker virtually. If you have a daughter that will be having her own locker this year, look at the products that LockerLookz offers and let your daughter go wild in making the space her own.

Back-to-School Separation Anxiety: Kindergarten and College

August 15, 2012 by dadofdivas 43 Comments

Back-to-School Separation Anxiety: Kindergarten and College
(Giving Your Kids Wings to Fly….While Helping Them Keep Their Feet on the Ground)

By Dr. Frederic Neuman

Human beings, like other animals, have a considerable stake in the wellbeing of their offspring. When children are very young, a great deal of time and effort is invested in keeping them safe. Infants are kept close by and strangers are treated with certain wariness. The tendency to be guarded may become exaggerated or persist too long as a child grows up. Such a parent is said to be “overprotective.”

There are a number of ways such a parent can inadvertently communicate fears to a child, who then, if such fears become pervasive, can develop an anxiety disorder. Certain ideas underlie a phobia, for instance.  Somebody who is afraid of travelling away from home and more afraid as that person goes farther and farther, can develop fears of driving, flying, and getting lost. Someone afraid of strangers can become excessively worried about intruders—and sometimes kidnappers and terrorists. Often, these fears, which are described most commonly in adults, grow plainly out of difficulties separating from a parent that are apparent even in childhood.

Kindergarten: A common scene the first day of kindergarten is of one or another child hanging on to its mother tearfully, afraid of being left alone with the other children and with the teacher. Most children are not discomforted by this first experience with school because most children have been leaving their mothers more and more throughout the previous years. But if a mother is overly concerned about a child being vulnerable away from home, that child is likely now to reflect that fear.

Treatment: This familiar situation is always treated the same way. The child should always be encouraged to do what the other children are doing—going off, let’s say, to play with the some toys in the next room. But if the child is too upset, the parent should stay with the child until he/she calms down. Then the parent will recede into the background and allow the child to be distracted by the other children. With very frightened children this process may take some time. It is important that the parent not get upset by this process. Another common situation where children have trouble separating from their parents is at a later age when they have to get on a bus to take them to sleep-away camp. Some children cry; but I have seenmothers crying and unwilling to let their children board the bus.

The Principles Involved: This process of separating should be slow, patient, but firm. At every point the child should be encouraged to do what the other children do, taking into consideration that child’s particular feelings. Go slow if the child is particularly upset. But make sure not to back down in the end.

College: Some parents are so afraid of their children leaving that they insist the child go to college nearby. I always argue as hard as I can against this idea. It is usually these children, in particular, who would profit by being in a college away from home. Very few children cannot make the adjustment if they are encouraged. Some are “homesick,” of course, but usually homesickness lasts only a few weeks. Other fears fade away with time.

Think of all the tasks someone this age must undertake in the next few years:

l. learning to develop one’s own values, perhaps different from those of his/her parents.

2. Learning how to make new friends.

3. Learning how to relate sexually.

4. Choosing interests, and eventually a purpose– that is, a career.

All of these tasks have to do with separating from parents, and they must be accomplished over the next few years for someone to grow up.

This is not to say that parents say goodbye to a college age child casually, without misgivings and without a sense of loss. I don’t think that is possible.  But nowadays the children are at the other end of a cell phone, and so the process is not as abrupt as it seems. And they do come back safely. And as I can attest personally, even grandchildren come back safely.

Dr. Fredric Neuman is the Director of the Anxiety and Phobia Center at White Plains Hospital and blogs for Psychology Today. He is also the author Superpowers, a unique young adult novel about growing up.  He can be contacted atwww.fredricneumanmd.com

Heely’s Shoes – A Fun, Stylish and Great Way to Keep in Shape #heelys

August 16, 2011 by dadofdivas 42 Comments

heelys wave shoes, Dad of Divas ReviewHeelys are the two-in-one shoe that lets you take life at your own pace. With the wheels out, the stylish designs perform and look just like any other shoe. When you easily put the wheels in, you roll at a different speed. Heelys are about exploring your freedom, unleashing the fun and empowering you to be fearless.

The above are the words that are shown when you go to the Heelys website. Seeing that my kids were still a bit young I did not even realize that they made Heelys for kids her age, but they do, and boy was my daughter excited when she received the pair that I selected for her (as I wanted it to be a surprise).

In receiving the shoe, I found them to be of high quality construction and the wheels that came with the shoes were also well developed. The installation of the wheels were easy to use and I loved the fact that you could heelys shoes, Dad of Divas Reviewtake the wheels out so that these shoes could be just that, shoes if I wanted them to be.

When I let my daughter open the box, her mouth simply dropped open (as she knew what they were) and she said they were so cool and she wanted to try them right away (of course!).

We first though watched the great starting video that was on the Heelys website (this was only one of many videos that were educational in nature). The video was great and definitely gave me a better picture of what to expect for my daughter’s first try at wearing and using the shoes.

I made a few videos of my thoughts on the shoes themselves as well as a video of my daughter trying out the shoes. Please take a minute to watch and let me know your thoughts!

As you can see using the Heelys shoes can be a lot of fun, but they also need practice at first to get the balance down. The more I see my daughters on these shoes the more I think that I should have gotten her a pair of X2’s which have two wheels in each shoe. I think this would have been easier altogether and she would have gotten the hang of it a bit more easily. Alas, I know she will get it eventually, it just takes a bit of time.

One thing that I will say about the Heelys brand is that you definitely get exercise being on these (which is a great thing for kids and adults of all ages).

So if you are looking for a shoe that is both fun and a healthy get-away, look no further than the Heelys.com website. One thing to keep in mind is that Heelys is throwing a Labor Day/Back-to-School special!! Between Sept 2-Sept 5, Buy one pair of Heelys, get the second pair for only $30!

By Posting This Note I Just Raised $10 for Adopt-A-Classroom. Will You Please Help Too?

September 7, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Each of us in our own way live with purpose. What we mean about purpose differs as each of us differ. I have been lucky enough over the last two months to be working on a project with DaySpring that has people like you and me talking about what it means to both Go Back to School with Purpose as well as Living with Purpose. Also, DaySpring has done a great thing in reaching out to and is working with Adopt-A-Classroom to support students and teachers as begin another school year.

It’s no secret that many students lack the basic tools they need to succeed, such as school supplies. We wanted to do something about this, thus the Back to School With Purpose Campaign was launched. By simply posting a Facebook note or blog post as noted below, you can help raise $10 toward our ultimate goal of $10,000 for Adopt-A-Classroom. It sounds kind of complicated, but it seriously takes two minutes to create a Facebook note for this cause! Will you please join me in supporting students and teachers this year? Thanks so much! (See directions below or send me a message for more info)

This Back to School season, DaySpring is celebrating its’ new Back to School products sold at Walmart and their legacy of bringing hope and encouragement every day, everywhere. DaySpring will donate $5,000 to the Adopt-A-Classroom campaign with your help.

  • You can tag as many people as you wish whom you feel live with purpose.
  • The DaySpring Back to School With Purpose campaign will officially begin at 12 AM EST on August 12 and end at 11:59 PM EST on September 8, 2010. Blog/Facebook posts submitted to us before or after that time period will not be counted for.

In addition copy and paste the following text in your post:

August 12, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

There is no ice pack needed – Go-Gurt (and Simply… Go-Gurt too!) is specially made to freeze and thaw, keeping the yogurt, and the rest of lunch, cool until lunch time.

With Go-Gurt yogurt in your child’s lunch box, you can feel confident that there will be no snack trading at lunch time since Go-Gurt has a taste and texture that kids love! Moms can feel good about packing Go-Gurt each morning since each portable tube contains a good source of calcium and vitamin D, providing a wholesome addition to a well-balanced lunch. Available in a variety of cool, fun flavors like Strawberry Splash and Chill-Out Cherry, Go-Gurt will quickly become a refreshing classroom favorite.

In addition, check out Yoplait on Facebook and Twitter! Be sure to “Like” Yoplait on Facebook and “Follow” Yoplait on Twitter to keep up with the latest news from Yoplait Yogurt.

In addition, you and your readers can visit http://www.myblogspark.com/uc/main/b4ce/ to download a printable *coupon for $0.85 off one box of Yoplait Go-Gurt yogurt today!

My Take on the ProductI loved the fact that Go-Gurt was so easy to use and share with my kids. With my eldest entering school this year, I know that she will need lunch items on the go and this hits the spot. When I tried out the product myself, it was great tasting and my girls echoed my thoughts also.
So if you are a parent that is looking for a healthy, but good tasting lunch item, Go-Gurt is a great alternative for your kids!
