On December 2-4 I had the experience of a lifetime to travel to Los Angeles and experience the magic, wonder and mystery that surrounds Star Wars – The Last Jedi. The trip surrounded the December 3 Press Junket but we also were experiencing a few ABC events including visiting the set and meeting a few of the actors from Rosanne.
Growing up with my own family we watched Roseanne. We were sad when Roseanne concluded and to be honest I do not believe that we ever thought that we would ever see this iconic series come back, but ABC through me for a loop by bringing it back with the original cast starting with all-new episodes, in a special hour-long premiere, TUESDAY, MARCH 27 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT). “Roseanne” will air in its regular time slot, 8:00-8:30 p.m., beginning TUESDAY, APRIL 3, followed by “The Middle.”
As mentioned, Roseanne brings back the original cast, and while there will be some new regulars and returning guest stars, the revival will explore life, death and everything in between through the relatable, hilarious and brutally honest lens of the Conner household.
The series stars Roseanne Barr as Roseanne Conner, John Goodman as Dan Conner, Laurie Metcalf as Jackie Harris, Lecy Goranson as Becky Conner-Healy, Sara Gilbert as Darlene Conner, Michael Fishman as D.J. Conner, Emma Kenney as Harris Conner-Healy, Ames McNamara as Mark Conner-Healy and Jayden Rey as Mary Conner. Sarah Chalke, who played the character Becky in later seasons, will also appear in another role.
During my trip to California, not only did we get to visit the set (and yes, they kept everything the same, and no, they had not kept everything from the original series), but we also got to interview Lecy Goranson, Sara Gilbert and Michael Fishman. We were also surprised when Roseanne Barr swung by the set for a quick cameo and group photo.
In speaking to these three actors, they let us know that they started shooting the series in early October. The series will pick up a bit after the original series left off. Everyone is alive and they felt that all fans will be able to make sense of the transition.
As I looked over the set it was amazing to see that they painstakingly rebuilt the set, even though they did not keep the set materials from the first run of the series. You will see through this new series that the family is still poor.
Michael Fishman mentioned that it is thanks to Sara Gilbert that the series is back. The idea of bringing the series back came from a conversation that Sara Gilbert and John Goodman had on The Talk. From that talk Sara mentioned that she never thought she could bring everyone back together, but when John Goodman said he would do it, she reached out and found that the entire cast of Roseanne was interested!
Lecy Goranson stated that her character is a widow and a waitress who likes to drink. She explained that the character is very strong despite her struggles and her relationship with her siblings is about the same.
Sara Gilbert explained that Darlene is a single parent and that David has been in and out of their lives but Darlene has not moved on. She has two kids and has moved back home. Her dream of being a writer has been knocked down over the years and now she has to decide whether to chase the dream or stay in the same situation, making the most of it.
Michael Fishman shared that his character is married and has a daughter. He came out of the military and has struggled to re-find himself. His wife is active duty within the military and his character is not ready to move on.
All three actors stated that they felt that the series will continue to resonate with people because it takes on tough issues. They explained that the new series will not shy away from tough issues.
There was a question on whether Sarah Chalke is involved and they stated that yes, she will be in the series in some way!
I loved that Lecy Goranson explained that for all of them, they love working on the show, but they are also fans of the show as well. Many of the original crew and writers are still on the show so it was and is like a family reuniting.
Watch for some small hints and memories to come back in this series. The three actors mentioned that the chicken shirt will be back in episode one and there will be other things that that they incorporated as well.
All three of these actors were so open and honest throughout the interview and we all loved to interact with them. I was especially excited to speak more in depth with Michael Fishman while walking around the set. We talked about his kids and their feelings about him being on the show.He told me that he brought the kids to the set and his kids have explained to him that they think he is doing a great job on set and his daughter even said she might want to do something like this someday. Even beyond this day on set I stayed in contact with Michael Fishman and he was willing to be a part of the Dads in the Limelight Series recently.
After our interviews with the cast we walked around the set and were surprised by Roseanne Barr stopping by to have a picture with us. As you watch this series, you will find that they have been able to keep so much of the original series in the set pieces that you see. The set designers spared no expense to re-create everything that you would have remembered. Yes, there are some new things, but you will find that though this is the case, they have been true to the original series in so many ways!
Here is a Video From My Visit To The Set of Roseanne
I know that I am very excited to see the new series and I hope that you are as well.
One question for everyone here. If you watched the original series, what is your favorite memory from the series?
