July 27, 2017 by dadofdivas 1 Comment

Gifted is the story of Frank Adler, a single man dedicated to raising his spirited young niece, Mary, a child prodigy.

I am very excited for the release of the movie Gifted next week. This movie is a great story of a man that really goes the distance for his niece who is truly gifted in her abilities. Today is the second day in the activities that I am sharing. Yesterday, I shared a fun math dominoes game that makes math fun for everyone. Today, we are having some fun with cookies and math.

About the Movie

Gifted is the story of Frank Adler, a single man dedicated to raising his spirited young niece, Mary, a child prodigy. But Frank and Mary’s happy life together is threatened when Mary’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of her overbearing grandmother (Lindsay Duncan) – who has other plans for the girl. GIFTED Arrives on Digital HD July 11 and Blu-ray TM & DVD July 25
The film is rated PG-13 but does have some strong language and adult themes / scenes.

Today’s Gifted Activity is a cool way to engage with your kids in talking about math in a language they will understand, using Cookie Math!  If you do the activity with your kids take a picture and come over to our Facebook page and show us how it went!

Ubtech Jimu Buzzbot and Muttbot Kit Promotes STEM Learning

Ubtech Jimu Buzzbot and Muttbot Kit Promotes STEM Learning

The reviewer has been compensated in the form of a Best Buy Gift Card and/or received the product/service at a reduced price or for free.

Ubtech Jimu Buzzbot and Muttbot Kit Promotes STEM Learning

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and STEM products encourage kids to develop core skills in these areas. Best Buy carries products from basic learning games to advanced toys designed to stimulate a child’s mind in the STEM areas, helping to develop logic and problem solving skills.

Ubtech Jimu Buzzbot and Muttbot Kit Promotes STEM Learning

One of the cool new STEM products that I recently found at Best Buy was the Ubtech Jimu Buzzbot and Muttbot kit. With this cool Ubtech Jimu Buzzbot and Muttbot kit you can create a custom-built robot that has moving arms and legs. Choose from preprogrammed movements in the Jimu Robot App, or generate unique settings with the PRP function. This UBTech Jimu Robot Buzzbot and Muttbot kit includes 271 interlocking parts and is designed for children ages 8 and older.

Ubtech Jimu Buzzbot and Muttbot Kit Promotes STEM Learning

My daughter and I created this robot together and found the following about it:

  • Once you have the app set up on your phone or tablet it will walk you through the instructions for building either the Buzzbot or Muttbot
  • The instructions are very detailed and the app allows you to manipulate the pieces on your device by rotating them, making them larger or smaller and this really helps you to better understand what goes where.
  • This states that it is for ages 8 and up, however, I would say that an eight year old would need a lot of adult supervision. Even my 13 year old needed some!
  • As you get through the steps of creating this, you will probably find that your device needs to be charged. I would recommend charging the battery before you get to this point as the battery is a part of the head of the Buzzbot so it is the last thing that you actually create.
  • Once you have created the Buzzbot you can then connect it to your device and then control your creation through either pre-made moves, or you can create your own which encourages you to play with programming of the different servos that you have working.

Ubtech Jimu Buzzbot and Muttbot Kit Promotes STEM Learning

This was a project that was a ton of fun and offers a ton of learning potential too. You also can change up what you have created to the other creation too, so many hours of fun can definitely be had in the end!

I highly encourage all to pick up a UBTech Jimu Robot Buzzbot/Muttbot for yourself!

4 Reasons Why Math Learning Centers are Out & Math Learning Apps Are In

4 Reasons Why Math Learning Centers are Out & Math Learning Apps Are In

4 Reasons Why Math Learning Centers are Out & Math Learning Apps Are In

When your child tells you that they are struggling in math, what are your options? You may think that your only option is hiring a tutor or going to a math learning center. However, a new and more modern alternative exists! With math learning apps, you can bring tutoring home and ensure that your child is motivated and engaged while improving their math skills.

Here are 4 reasons why you should consider a math learning app:

1. Learning Apps Go With You

Taking your child to a math learning center requires a lot of time. The hour or more that you spend at the center during each visit plus the time you spend commuting, can become a huge drain on your busy schedule. Math learning apps, on the other hand, can go with you wherever you are. For instance, your child can practice math while you drive to soccer practice or while you relax at home or even while you wait for your food at a restaurant. This is more convenient and ensures adequate learning. Also, instead of getting tutored once or twice a week, you can ensure that your child is working on their math skills every day.

2. Math Learning Apps Offer Better Quality of Instruction

When you take your child to a learning center, your child will be work with one or two different tutors. These tutors may or may not be certified teachers. With math learning apps, your child gets to learn with the help of qualified, certified instructors. The creators of learning apps employ the best educators in their fields in order to provide you and your child with an exceptional learning opportunity.

3. Instruction at the Point of Learning

One key that makes learning apps more effective than traditional instruction is a principle called instruction at the point of learning. This means providing students with instruction and feedback at the point where they are learning the material, rather than handing them a worksheet and then correcting the work at a later time. With instruction at the point of learning, powered by iPad technology, your child is given the necessary instruction exactly when it is needed. They are redirected when they make mistakes, so they learn quickly, rather than just seeing the right answer after the mistake is corrected.

4. Apps Are More Motivating

These days kids are drawn to tablets and digital games. In this way, math teaching apps motivate and engage your child. They make learning fun instead of making children feel like they “have a tutor” or are “going to school”.

Choosing the Right App

You’ll need to choose the right learning app in order to motivate and engage your child. You will want an app that has game-like play, so kids are rewarded for their responses and their success. You also want one that has personalized instruction, rather than just the same questions for every user. This will ensure that your money and time is well spent.

Thinkster Math is an excellent tablet-based learning app that uses instruction at the point of learning from qualified, certified teachers. Visit Thinkster Math to learn more about the app and how it can make a difference in your child’s learning.

Summer Brain Quest Helps Stop The Summer Slide!

April 24, 2017 by dadofdivas 6 Comments

Summer Brain Quest

 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

As my kids get ready for moving into the summer I know that there is always the concern that there is a summer brain drain and that my girls will lose some of the momentum that they have made over the year. It is important to have resources that can be used throughout the summer. Summer Brain Quest which is on sale April 18th) is an exciting new extension of the bestselling Brain Quest. In Summer Brain Quest parents get an effective tool to help attack the summer slide.

Summer Brain Quest

Summer Brain Quest is notable because it offers a one-of-a-kind learning experience that delivers personalized learning for every type of kid. Personalized learning is an educational method where exercises are tailored to each child’s strengths, needs and interests. Our goal was to empower kids to have a voice in what and how they learn, while ensuring they get enough practice of the fundamentals. It achieves this through our interactive format.

Summer Brain Quest

Summer Brain Quest is structured like a game; each book includes a pull-out map that guides kids on a learning quest. They fill in their route on the map by earning stickers for completing workbook pages as well as pursuing outdoor activities. The map offers a choice of routes, allowing kids to customize their learning path and pursue what excites them most (extra math problems? more hands-on science?), and also encouraging them to jump around within the book to follow their curiosity.

Each Summer Brain Quest  workbook has been created in consultation with an award-winning teacher specializing in that grade. We ensure that our exercises are aligned to Common Core State Standards, Next Generation State Standards, and state social studies standards.
