Kicking That Dad Bod This Summer

August 13, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Kicking That Dad Bod This Summer

Are you amazed at how quickly your partner managed to get back into shape after giving birth and wondering what her secret was? You don’t know how it happened, but one day you looked around and found you couldn’t see your toes anymore. It’s only to be expected for mom to put on a little weight when she’s pregnant, but where did your extra pounds come from? If you’re wondering how to get back into shape, so you can enjoy running around after the little ones, here are some tips that might help.

Skip the Late Night Meals

Do you find yourself overeating unhealthy snacks late at night? Do toasted waffles, tacos, potato chips, and pancakes get the better of you in the evening? As a busy parent, you’re going to use your evenings for chilling and relaxing, but that doesn’t mean you should be eating as well. Eating late in the evening is not the best time if you want to kick your dad bod. Consuming extra food at any time of the day is not great for the waistline. Your metabolism slows down when you sleep, which means your body is digesting and using calories at a much slower rate.

Drink Light Beer

If you regularly enjoy a few beers after a long day at work, you might not realize, but you’re consuming large amounts of unnecessary calories. If you really can’t ditch the habit all together, consider switching out to much lighter beers. Try to limit your intake to one or two beers a day or only drink on Friday and Saturday nights.

Quit Snacking

Life can become very hectic when there’s a baby on the way. This often means regular meals get replaced with unhealthy snacks. The problem with snack food is that it only fills you up for short periods of time and it’s not long before you’re reaching for the potato chips again because you’re hungry. Find the time to eat proper meals, and if you need some extra help, consider weight loss meal delivery from Jenny Craig.

Be Active

One of the best ways to lose those extra belly inches is to be more active. It’s possible to exercise at home but if you need added incentive or encouragement, consider joining your local gym. There are lots of other ways you can exercise; for example, joining a sports team, kickboxing, running, swimming or cycling. It doesn’t matter what it is as long as it gets your heart pumping at least once every day. The trick is also to keep as active as you can. Rather than driving everywhere, try walking. Take the stairs rather than the elevator. Take every opportunity to take your new addition out in the pram and show everyone in the neighborhood what a proud dad you are.

Don’t spend too long gazing in the mirror, wondering where all your extra inches have come from. Get out there and do something about it. With a little bit of effort and a few small changes, you can have a bod you’re proud of.

4 Ways To Fall Asleep in 5 Minutes

4 Ways To Fall Asleep in 5 Minutes

4 Ways To Fall Asleep in 5 Minutes

Yep-Even If You Have Kids!

I think something I share with a lot of other parents is the notion that sleep has become a delicacy like no other. That feeling at the end of a day when the kids are fed and (hopefully) fast asleep, the lunches are packed and breakfast is ready for tomorrow brings me so much joy to look forward to. Wouldn’t it be nice if it always worked out this way? More times than not I am convinced that as soon as my head hits the pillow I will be fast asleep and, unfortunately, more times than not it is more difficult than I like to admit  for me to drift off into a few hours of blissful rest. These are a few tips and tricks I have discovered aid in getting the most out of that essential sleep at the end of busy days.

Keep Your Sleep Space Mess-Free (At Least TRY To)

Try to keep your work space and your sleep space separate. A lot of things happen in your home, make a space to get work done that is separate from your sleepy-time oasis. Keeping you room as a tranquil place that gets a regular cleaning, allows your mind off and fall asleep easier and allow your stress level to decrease.

Put Your Phone Away

We have all heard it, but how many of us practice it? The blue light literally suppresses melatonin, the very thing your body releases to make you sleepy. I started leaving my phone on the table across the room from my bed so I can not give in and check social media before bed. There is never anything on there worth losing even a few minutes of precious sleep.

Meditate
In all the stress that comes with being a father, husband, or a co-worker, it can become very difficult to be everything you need to be for yourself. At the end of everyday, right as you get into bed take a few minutes to actively reflect on the day, and acknowledge what is on your mind. I keep a journal next to my bed so I can write down my thoughts and put them away before bed. Something about putting them on paper gets them out of my head for a little while. Focusing on you and how you show up for life makes a world of difference when you take a few moments to check in on you.

Keep Your Bedtime Consistent

Easier said than done-I know! Think about it though, there is a reason your kids have a scheduled bedtime (probably a lot of them), but it really does allow our bodies to get into a pattern of turning off around a certain time each night. Like anything when you incorporate something new into your life it takes some getting used to. Train yourself to be ready for bed around the same time and your body will listen to you! It is proven!

4 Essential Safety Tips for Paddle Boarding with Children

July 27, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

If you love paddle boarding, then chances are you’d like to introduce your children to it. Or if your children are into watersports in general, they may have seen someone paddle boarding and asked if they could give it a try. Paddle boarding can indeed be a great activity for the whole family, but also a challenging one. There are some risks that should be accounted for as well. Here are a few essential tips for people who want to paddle board with their children safely.

Go Slow and Start Early

You should get your children started as soon as possible if you want them to become good paddle boarders as they grow up. You can start by letting them ride on the nose and board somewhere safe.

You should pick protected water areas with no current so that you’ll be able to quickly locate your child if they fall off. A calm beach, protected bay, or lakes are usually perfect for this. As they grow, you can switch them to their own paddle board, but take baby steps. Some will be ready to ride on their own by the age of 6, but others are slow learners, so take your time.

Get the Right Board

If you’re going to board with a child, you first have to make sure that the paddle board is big and buoyant enough. I would suggest you find a good paddle board retailer online and get a quick look at their selection. The paddle board should be big enough and capable of carrying the weight of both you and your child. The board should be just heavy enough to handle both of you, however, so make sure that you check if the paddle board is rated precisely for your combined weight. A board that is too heavy will be harder to maneuver.

Don’t Forget the Floatation Device

Since paddle boarding is derived from surfing, it’s customary for paddle boarders to not wear vests while boarding. However, this isn’t a choice when it comes to kids, so make sure that they have a personal floatation device on at all times.

And don’t expect that just because they’re already great swimmers that they don’t need one. One of them could end up hitting their head on the board after a fall and lose consciousness. Or they may get trapped under their board. In those instances, a PDF could literally be a lifesaver.

Make Sure they Can Actually Swim

Unlike other water activities like kayaking, the chances of falling off when paddle boarding are very high. So, your child will need to be a competent swimmer before you even think about it. Even with a flotation device, your child may not float in a safe position, so they’ll have to be comfortable enough in the water in order to not panic and reposition themselves.

Teaching your kids how to paddle board is a great way to enjoy the great outdoors and will give you one more thing to do next time you’re at a beach or on vacation. Just make sure that you follow these few simple tips if you want to stay safe and have fun.

How to Take Meditation to the Next Level

July 27, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

In today’s day and age, it is important to practice self-care and take time out to bring calm and serenity into our busy schedules. With life being overwhelming, chaotic and fast-paced, you have to bring in the balance to keep your sanity and decrease the stresses and anxieties that plague so many people every day.

Add parenting to this mix, and you will most definitely need some form of meditation to keep juggling all the balls in the air. Achieving peace of mind and clarity of heart can at times feel daunting, especially when the challenges of running a household, business or parenting feel overwhelming.

By taking time out for yourself to regroup and reconnect with yourself on a deeper level, meditation even in its simplest form can work wonders on your state of mind and overall wellbeing.

Chakra Meditation

If you enjoy meditation or relaxing techniques, you may like to experiment with different types of meditation, and chakra meditation could be just what you are looking for.  The purpose of chakra meditation is to improve balance and align your main chakras (The 7 Chakras) to achieve a more peaceful state.

Chakra meditation aims to bring your mental and health states into balance by focusing on the 7 Chakras. Chakras have been described as energy points or centers within your body which, when aligned, can balance your entire being as one. This means not only physically but mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

The 7 Chakras

There are 7 main chakras or plexuses in the human body from the head down to the base of the spine namely; Limbic, optic, cervical, cardiac, solar, aortic and pelvic. These 7 chakras each have specific qualities namely; integration, forgiveness, diplomacy, love, peace, creativity and innocence.

When these chakras are open or unblocked and the energies are flowing, you can achieve your own state of nirvana or ultimate wellbeing. The trick is to learn how exactly to do this. Expert meditators say that it is as simple as closing your eyes and focusing on which chakra feels blocked to you and then focusing on visualizing opening that chakra.

You do not need to be an expert on chakra meditation to enjoy the benefits; simply researching the method or learning more about each chakra and how to unblock them can be beneficial in your meditation time.

Meditation Station

To practice any form of meditation, you need a safe, comfortable and quiet place – a place that feels warm and intimate to you. Meditating outdoors can be a wonderful way to not only achieve peace within yourself, but to connect to the elements of nature outside which have their own calming and grounding effect.

If you cannot meditate outdoors, try bringing the outdoors in by incorporating indoor plants into your meditation space. Open a window for a breeze on sunny days or make the meditation space warm and comfortable depending on your preference.

Meditating even for 20 minutes a day can bring you the tranquility and relaxation you may need in preparation for, or after a very busy day.

How To Take Better Care Of Everyone’s Health At Home

July 8, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

How To Take Better Care Of Everyone’s Health At Home

When you are the healthiest version of yourself, you are also able to achieve a lot more with your day. You feel more inspired, and you simply have the stamina that you need for any tasks that come your way.

Of course, your health won’t be optimal if you don’t take care of it, and this article will go over some tips you should follow that will not only benefit you but everyone else that you live with at home. It’s only natural that you want your family members to be equally healthy, as they are your loved ones and you want the best for them.

By pursuing healthier habits, it is possible for everyone to increase their quality of life. Continue reading for what these habits are.

Taking care of mental health

It is thanks to good mental health that you are able to maintain a positive outlook on life. To take better care of your mind, consider spending quality time with your loved ones, and simply participate in activities that you all enjoy. In other words, always do what makes you happy.

Eating properly

The type of food that you eat will always impact your mental and physical wellbeing alike, so you need to be careful about what you eat. Eating well as a family makes this habit easier to follow, as you can keep one another on track. Not to mention, you are bound to eat the food that you have at home in the first place, and if your fridge is filled with healthy alternatives, then your everyday meals will also be much healthier.

Spend time outdoors and stay active

Spending time outdoors is good for your overall wellbeing, and that is why it is something that you should prioritize doing at all times. Combine this with staying active, as this will not only release endorphins in your brain that make you happy, but it will help you maintain a healthy weight, strengthen your bones and muscles, and much more.

Visiting the doctor

To ensure that you don’t have an impending illness that you don’t even notice, you should regularly visit your doctor for check-ups.

Facing medical negligence

There are some situations where either yourself or your family members have become sick, and this is due to medical negligence. While this isn’t the norm, and this should definitely not deter you from visiting your doctor, you still need to know what to do during all situations that you might encounter.

For example, what do you do if you have a victim to medical negligence while you were giving birth? Which, as a result, means your baby is born with cerebral palsy – a condition in which your muscle coordination is impaired. You will need to make a complex birth injury claim, as soon as you can, and the only way to do so is with the right lawyer or cerebral palsy solicitors.

Supporting someone with this illness is difficult, and it requires the right type of treatment and therapy to get better. You are entitled to the best possible compensation when you or your family are not treated, as you should have been.

While it’s important to look after your family’s health, don’t forget that if you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to properly take of others. It is exactly for this reason that your self-care must never be neglected, and working out as a family, or eating healthy meals together, then adds to the overall healthy lifestyle routine.

Top Tips for Dad to Take Care of Skin

July 4, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Top Tips for Dad to Take Care of Skin

Traditionally, men have kept things simple when it comes to skin care. In recent times, however, there has been a definite shift in the way men have tended to and looked after themselves in this instance. Today, more men than ever before have started delving deeper in the world of skin care in a bid to look younger, fresher, and healthier. They are using all sorts of lotions and potions, and some are even seeing the dermatologist regularly in order to stay on top of their skin care game.

As a busy working dad, you might not have the time to be doing all of this to care for your skin. You want the young, fresh, and healthy complexion, without having to devote too much of your time and effort to it. Fortunately, there are ways to do just that.

Here are some top tips for all you fathers out there who are determined to take better care of your skin:

Study product labels closely

A simple yet effective change you can make to your skin care regime to study product labels far more closely than you usually do. By doing so, you will be a lot more likely to choose and then use the products that suit your skin type. This is essential, as using something that aggravates your skin will only make it look damaged, blotchy, and unhealthy.

You have to read the labels and choose the right products for you based off of what you see. How do you do this, though, when you have absolutely no background in beauty and grooming and, as a result, don’t know what to look out for? Depending on your skin type, a few key words you need to keep an eye out for include:

  • If you have acne-prone skin: Keep on the lookout for products that are ‘oil free’ and ‘non-comedogenic.’
  • If you have sensitive skin: Look for products that are labeled as being ‘fragrance-free’ (not ‘unscented’).
  • If you have wrinkles: Give precedent to products packed with Vitamin C, such as Retinol serum, as they help to brighten skin tone, increase firmness, and create a youthful glow.

Wash your face every day

This should be a no-brainer but, every now and again, life will get in the way, and you will forget to wash your face. No matter how difficult the kids are being in the morning or late you are for work, however, you have to remember to give your face a wash and a scrub. When you do, try to avoid regular soap and boiling hot water as this will just end up drying and damaging your skin. Instead, use a mild cleanser and lukewarm water.

Improve your shaving technique

Your shaving technique could be what is holding you back from achieving perfectly fresh, youthful, and healthy looking skin.

In this instance, it’s all about the razor that you use. Sometimes, multi-blade razors will work almost too well and give you razor bumps and burns. If this is the case for you, you should have no qualms in switching to a single razor. Be sure to shave in the direction of your hair growth, too, in order to avoid irritation.

Being a dad doesn’t mean you’re no longer allowed to look after your skin. Take the above advice and set about the task of improving your skin care regime today!

Helping Your Child Cope After an Accident

May 17, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Tips to Help You Recover After a Car Accident

Car accidents are traumatic for anyone involved, but particularly for children. Not only will they have their own injuries to cope with, but they’ve also got to experience their caregivers being injured. Children need their parents for safety and security and seeing them injured can make them feel insecure. If your child is involved in a car accident, they’re going to need your help to recover. Here are a few ways you can help them get back on track.

  • Look Out for Signs of Trauma

Not all children react to such an experience in the same way. Some will be able to shrug it off quite quickly, while others may take a long time to recover. As a parent, you need to be vigilant for signs that your child is not recovering from the trauma. For younger children, it can be a return to more infantile behavior such as bed-wetting and sucking their thumb. If your children are older symptoms can include nightmares, headaches, behavior problems and symptoms of depression.

  • Be a Good Listener

It’s important for you to offer support by being a good listener. You might think your child doesn’t understand what’s happening to them, but if you take the time to listen to their concerns, they might surprise you. By talking about what happened and how they’re feeling, you will be helping their recovery.

  • Watch for Signs of PTSD

PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is something your child can develop following an accident, so it’s important you look out for the signs. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares or anxiety. Let them know it’s nothing to worry about and is a normal reaction to trauma while at the same time encouraging them to get back to their normal routine. It’s also important for you to understand that they might not recover without additional therapy and you can make sure they receive it.

  • Get Legal Help

Your child may need professional counseling or therapy, and they may also need medical care to help them recover from their injuries, all of which are very expensive. You might be entitled to claim for compensation, in which case you’re going to need legal help. If you want to know more about making a compensation claim for whiplash or any other injury visit www.the-compensation-experts.co.uk.

  • Look After Yourself

Your child may be feeling distressed after the accident, but you’re going to be feeling it too. You’re going to be better prepared to help your child’s recovery if you pay attention to your own feelings and reactions. Take positive steps to take care of yourself such as seeking support from friends, family, and professionals. Find time to relax, exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet and make sure you’re getting enough sleep.

It is possible for children to recover from the trauma of an accident as long as they’ve got the love and support of those around them. Sometimes all that’s required is for someone to listen. There are, however, instances when a little more support is required in the form of mental health therapy. Don’t be afraid to reach out for external help when your child has been involved in an accident. Getting help from outside the family can speed up recovery times.

How to Use Your Diet to Improve Medical Treatment Symptoms

April 16, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

How to Use Your Diet to Improve Medical Treatment Symptoms

Side effects are a very common sight in the medical world. Medical treatment, after all, can be very harsh on the body as it attacks whatever inside you is causing you pain. It might be cancer, or a virus, or something entirely different. What remains the same is that your immune system and body are there to support you. It can only assist you well, however, when it has all the vitamins and nutrients that it needs to thrive. You need to run at full power when dealing with ongoing medical treatment symptoms, so to start you will want to:

Be Aware of the Symptoms in Advance

Go through with your doctor to determine what the symptoms of your treatment are, and what to expect. Your doctor cannot control how your body responds to specific procedures, for example. On the other hand, if you experience something out of the norm, then you need to know to get it rectified immediately. For instance, if you were misdiagnosed or otherwise experienced a form of negligence on behalf of the medical staff, your symptoms likely won’t be what you are expecting. The faster you know something is wrong, the faster you can get it fixed. Even after this fix, however, you will also want to find a firm that offers no win no fee medical negligence claims so that you can receive the financial compensation you need to pay for new treatments and move on past the trauma.

Work Out With Your Doctor How to Alleviate Those Symptoms

Before you start figuring out ways you can alleviate your symptoms at home on your own, it is best to consult a doctor or specialist. Tell them that you want to try non-medical options first to limit the number of side effects.

Switch Out Unhealthy Food to Healthy Food

One of the best ways to improve the symptoms of treatments like chemotherapy is through the power of good nutrition. Your body needs all the help it can get, but sometimes that help won’t come in the form of more medication, but through the vitamins and nutrients your body absorbs in any given day.

Drink Plenty of Liquids

If vomiting is common for you, it is vital you do all you can to stay hydrated. If you don’t, you could end up hurting your body even more, as vomiting particularly expulses a lot of hydration from your body.

Importance of Improving Your Baseline This Way

Your baseline health refers to the state of your health without the trauma of chemotherapy or other intensive ongoing treatment. Only when your baseline health is at its best can you manage symptoms well and know immediately when something is wrong. There are many adverse health issues to being dehydrated, for example, but ensuring you drink enough fluids can ease dehydration as a cause.

Whether you are undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, or just recovering from a particularly nasty cold, improving your diet is a great way to alleviate your symptoms and improve your recovery times.

Encouraging Optimal Dental Hygiene In Your Kids

March 26, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Encouraging Optimal Dental Hygiene In Your Kids

If your kids are like most children in the world, chances are, brushing their teeth is just about the least fun activity they can think of. The good news for parents is that fewer kids are getting cavities that just a few years ago. However, the bad is that around 43% of children aged two to 19 do have tooth decay. Keeping cavities and gum disease at bay does take daily work, but there are many ways that you can make it a little more fun for kids.

It’s All in the Angle

Top electronics companies have a plethora of products aimed specifically at kids, but some (such as the Sonicare) are specifically created to make brushing a bit more entertaining. These toothbrushes come with dedicated apps featuring cartoon characters that accompany kids throughout the whole brushing process. The app does two things: ensure that children spend enough time on each tooth, and teach them the correct angle at which to hold the brush. Whether or not you rely on an app, it is vital to teach your kids where to place the brush. For instance, many kids tend to brush only the lower half of teeth, as well as the chewing surfaces of teeth. In fact, they should also target the inner and outer surfaces, as well as the gumline, which is where the majority of plaque forms. Finally, from an early age, kids should be encouraged to floss after brushing.

When to Brush?

Encourage kids to brush their teeth right after a meal, especially if they have consumed sweet foods. Carbohydrate-rich foods enable bacteria that attack the tooth’s enamel. However, if your kids have eaten something acidic (think oranges, lemons, or grapes) they should wait about half an hour, because these foods weaken enamel, and brushing too soon can cause further damage.

Cleaning Teeth with Orthodontics

Kids wearing braces and other orthodontics can be at a higher risk of developing cavities because they are not able to clean the spaces between teeth with dental floss. They should have a special orthodontic brush they can use to brush the gum line and remove lodged material from their apparatus. Devoted dads can make it easier on their little ones by feeding kids ortho-friendly foods which are gentle on teeth, avoiding foods like caramel, popcorn, and beef jerky, which can be very hard to remove when you are wearing braces.

Food Education

As mentioned above, food choices are key when it comes to promoting lifelong oral health in children. Dentists can be very useful at letting kids know why items that may seem healthy, such as fruit juices, for instance, are big cavity risks because they ‘settle’ on tooth surfaces and contain sugar, which is food for decay-causing bacteria. You can play food pyramid games with your children, encouraging to place the food in the right category, or use apps like Healthy Heroes 1&2: Nutrition for Kids, Veggie Circus Farm, or Smash Your Food. The latter is particularly useful for showing kids how much sugar, salt, and fat are hidden in everyday foods.

Keeping teeth in a healthy state is a day-to-day effort. Kids may sometimes hesitate to brush after a meal, so it is important to let them know that they need to get to their teeth before bacteria do! Finally, parents can consider fun toothbrushes that are made just for kids. These combine technology with bright designs, to get kids more inspired to brush with the correct technique.

Tips for Looking After Your Child’s Health

March 6, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Tips for Looking After Your Child’s Health

Parents want what’s best for their children, and one of the most frequently encountered problems for moms and dads is when their child falls ill. You can’t avoid your kids catching colds and tummy bugs, but it’s distressing to see them unhappy and in pain.

Illness is good for kids

That might sound like a contradiction, but in fact, experiencing childhood illness is an essential element of your child’s long term health. Their growing immune systems need to experience a range of different types of bacteria and viruses in order to develop defenses against them. A child who has never been ill will have a weakened immune system that may not be able to fight off a severe illness, so if you’re tempted to wrap your children in cotton wool, think again.

Healthy lifestyle

Eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise is just as important for kids as it is for adults. Access to unhealthy snacks is so easy that it encourages kids to eat candy and chips, and the increase in indoor based entertainments like TV and gaming means many kids don’t get much exercise.

You need to encourage your kids to be as active as possible, taking them out for walks and bike rides, going swimming, doing dance, gymnastics, or martial arts, or whatever else they take a fancy to! Get them to help you in the garden, and make all these activities as enjoyable as possible to show them how much fun physical exercise can be.

Take a look at what they’re eating, and if you can see they’re not getting their five a day, for instance, have a think about how to increase their intake of fruits and vegetables. Disguising them in pasta sauces is one proven method, and you’ll find plenty of books and websites offering other hints for getting kids to eat their greens. You might have more luck with fruit, as children tend to enjoy fruit more, but try as many different foods and recipes as you can to help you find the ones that your child will eat.

Looking after a sick child

When your kids do get ill, make sure you know what warning signs to look for that might indicate a more serious illness. If you’re in any doubt, you can call your family doctor for advice. For most childhood illnesses, rest, plenty of fluids, and some TLC will see them back to normal in no time. In the unfortunate event that your child became ill or was made worse by misdiagnosis or negligence on the part of their healthcare provider, contact a specialist solicitor like Minton Morrill for expert advice on whether you have a valid claim for compensation.

You won’t be able to protect your child from every injury or illness, and as already noted, it wouldn’t be good for them if you did. As long as you know how to prevent problems such as childhood obesity, and give your child the best of care when they do get sick, you’ll have a healthy happy child who’ll grow into a strong, healthy adult.
