Using Manwich Bourbon For A Great Summer BBQ Meal

June 30, 2018 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Kroger

This post is sponsored by Mirum, but opinions expressed are my own.

After just getting back from being in North Carolina and having BBQ, I felt compelled to do a little shopping myself to get into the BBQ spirit. I have not had a good BBQ Burger in a while and in going to my local Kroger I found that there was a brand new Manwich, Manwich Bourbon that was perfect for the burgers that I wanted to make (Manwich can also be made with chicken or pork).

Manwich Bourbon

We were having a few kids over to spend the night so to tide them over I also made sure to pick up a few Slim Jim Premium Sticks, as I knew that the kids would be hungry and we needed something to hold them over until I could pull the burgers off of the grill.

slim jim premium sticks

I do love to cook, especially on the grill. I also like to experiment a bit and in seeing the Manwich Bourbon I knew that this was a perfect time to experiment with this to make an amazing burger. It was not hard to create the burger itself. I used the below recipe to create the ultimate Manwich Bourbon Burger.

Manwich Bourbon Burger (Makes 6 burgers)

  • 2 lbs of ground round
  • 1 can of Manwich Bourbon
  • Breadcrumbs (use only if meat becomes too runny from sauce)
  • 6 Hamburger Buns

Manwich Bourbon

This was a very easy recipe as all you have to do is take the meat and slowly work in the Manwich Bourbon into the meat itself. Depending on how much meat you have will determine whether you need the entire can or not. You do not want the burger to be too runny. If you find that the burgers have become too runny, then add in breadcrumps into your burgers to soak up some of the sauce.

Manwich Bourbon

Once you have put together the burgers, you will want to allow them to sit in a freezer back to hold in the sauce for about an hour or so.

Once you are ready to make the burgers, take the out of the fridge, fire up the grill on low heat and cook slowly to taste.

Manwich Bourbon

The burgers also taste great with cheese, so pick out your favorite cheese and melt on the cheese while the burgers are still on the grill.

Manwich Bourbon

Biting into the burgers you will get to taste the great sweet and tangy flavor of the Manwich Bourbon BBQ Sloppy Joe Sauce. While Manwich has been around since the 1960’s this new flavor really kicks up the flavor even more. I also love that in an entire can you are only getting 180 calories (35 calories per serving).

Manwich Bourbon

I also have to say that the kids did love having the Slim Jim Premium Smoked Sticks as snacks. They have tried these snack sticks in the past but we usually get the smaller sticks so having the larger sticks was definitely a treat! What I love about these premium smoked sticks is that each stick is grass-fed 100% beef or 100% premium pork, always raised without hormones, and with no artificial colors or flavors, and no added MSG. Also, each serving contains at least 10 grams of protein.

While I was at the store I found a few varieties available, but I chose to select The Smokehouse Original stick contains brown sugar and soy sauce, combining for a sweet and savory experience with a hint of spice (100% Grassfed Beef, 10g Protein).

Unlikely Food Pairings On The Grill

September 16, 2016 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

al fresco chicken sausage

 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

Unlikely food pairings are oftentimes surprisingly tasty. Chili powder on mango anyone? How about olives with orange rind? These flavor combinations, while seemingly nonsensical, are a treat to your palette and a testament to the endless ways in which you can be creative in the kitchen.

Since culinary innovation knows no bounds, why not take this to the grill? al fresco’s new Sweet & Smoky BBQ Chicken Sausage does just that, providing you with an unlikely new flavor that will perk up your meal. Savory with a hint of smoky flavor, you may just get carried away thinking about all the delicious dishes you can pair with your new summer staple.

I decided to take the new al fresco’s new Sweet & Smoky BBQ Chicken Sausage and put it to the test. I grilled up the sausage with the following to make a great new take on an old favorite stew and came up with a great tasting dish.

Recipe

  • 1 Package al fresco’s new Sweet & Smoky BBQ Chicken Sausage (Grilled and sliced)
  • 1 Package al fresco Turkey Bacon
  • 1 Large Zucchini (Cubed)
  • 4 carrots, peeled, cut into 1-inch slices
  • 2 stalks celery, cut into 1-inch slices
  • 3 large russet potatoes, peeled and cut in eighths
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp dried rosemary
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme

al fresco chicken bacon al fresco chicken baconal fresco chicken bacon

How does this sound to you. I can tell you that it gave the  stew a great flavor andit ended up being a great hit in the family too!

One of the things I really liked about this product was that not only do you get great tasting meat, but it is made with lean, skinless chicken meat, which means that it contains 70% less fat and 30% less sodium than average pork sausage which means it’s better for you. Better yet, all of al fresco’s chicken sausage flavors are gluten-free and are packaged fully cooked – meaning you can enjoy your delicious grilled sausage in minutes – talk about a time saver!

If you love food and love a contest, you also have the ability to enter a great contest! Visit here and vote for your favorite grilling recipes using sweet and smoky BBQ. When you vote, you will be entered to win $500 AND a high quality grill ($500 value).

Dads in the Limelight – Short Order Dad, Robert Rosenthal

June 16, 2016 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Dads in the Limelight Series

Dads in the Limelight – Short Order Dad, Robert Rosenthal

Our 656th Dad in the Limelight is Short Order Dad, Robert Rosenthal. I want to thank Robert Rosenthal for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing Robert Rosenthal with all of you.

Robert Rosenthal is the 656th Dad being spotlighted in the Dads in the Limelight series on the Dad of Divas blog!

1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)

My name is Robert Rosenthal. I am a former international ad exec, accumulated three million frequent flier miles while being paid to present creative concepts around the world. A good gig, no doubt, but the best part was overeating in 3,000 restaurants on six continents with great local friends and associates. That kept me busy during the day, while at night I performed my standup routine in all of New York City’s top comedy clubs and earned a professional cooking degree from the Institute of Culinary Education. Now I combine all those pursuits and passions to write and host programs about food and cooking – hopefully with a soupçon of humor – both live and on-camera. I suppose I’m in the limelight at the moment because I have a cookbook just out – directed to dads, by the way – that started shipping this week: .

2) Tell me about your family

One thing about my family is that we all really love being together. Just lucky. That might not sound altogether unusual, but when you have teenage daughters who actually enjoy spending time with their parents, that’s a very good thing. We eat dinner together at every possible opportunity, and I am their personal chef. My daughters are fabulous in many ways, but rather than bore you with that, I would tell you that one thing they never agree on is what they want for breakfast. For one it’s egg whites only, the other wants scrambled. Turkey bacon for one sister, bacon bacon for the other. One must have whole wheat toast, the other insists on white toast. Chocolate milk, skim milk. You get the idea. I looked at them one day and said, “what do I look like, a short order cook?” Yeah, they replied, you’re Short Order Dad. The rest, as they say…

Robert Rosenthal is the 656th Dad being spotlighted in the Dads in the Limelight series on the Dad of Divas blog!

3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?

I think it’s the same challenge that every parent faces. How do you raise mature, sensitive, nice, caring, happy, healthy kids in an increasingly complex and often times dangerous world. I guess we just try to pay them a lot of our attention, teach them the difference between right and wrong, instill in them a sense of self-confidence, and keep our fingers crossed that when it comes time for them to make their own decisions, they make a lot more good ones than bad.

4) What advice would you give to other fathers?

I’m not sure I’m comfortable giving advice to other fathers on matters other than how to get the most taste with the fewest ingredients and the least effort. But I’d be willing to share this observation of the obvious: it helps your kids immeasurably to know that you love them unconditionally and that you will always be there for them. Always remember that you are the model for them. The way you interact with your wife, for example, is how they will come to understand how women should be treated and how relationships should work. Oh, and put down your phone and be FULLY with them. Make every moment matter; you don’t need me to remind you how fast the time flies by. Just look at your own family photos…wistfully.

Robert Rosenthal is the 656th Dad being spotlighted in the Dads in the Limelight series on the Dad of Divas blog!

5) How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?

Look, obviously your kids come first. But you do need to make private time for your spouse, your friends and yourself. There is no magic formula for that. Just do it.

6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?

That I like bourbon.

Robert Rosenthal is the 656th Dad being spotlighted in the Dads in the Limelight series on the Dad of Divas blog!

7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?

The same as any other father; that fatherhood is the most rewarding experience there is and there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for them…except make one more trip to Disneyworld.

Robert Rosenthal is the 656th Dad being spotlighted in the Dads in the Limelight series on the Dad of Divas blog!

8) What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?

Witnessing childbirth. Family vacations. Pizza nights.

Dove Men+Care Helps Me Balance The Roles In My Life

October 19, 2015 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Dove Men+Care
 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

Dove Men+Care has been doing an amazing job at providing men with great products that encourage them to look good and smell good but now they are doing even more. I was really impressed to see that Dove Men+Care is now focusing much of their campaigns on balancing our daily lives. How are they doing this. For me they sent me a great kit with their products, but also an amazing Williams Sonoma Grill Set.

As you know I am a professional. I have shown you this in some of the clothes that I have chosen in the past but also in the products that I use on my own skin. I choose these products very selectively because I want to make sure that they work, but also that they provide me with the ability to get thoroughly clean, but also not dry out my skin or make my skin break out in any way (Yes I have had challenges with some products in this regard in the past).

When Dove Men+Care asked me to give their products a test drive I was more than happy to do so. I have tried them in the past and have been very impressed with the variety of products that they have available as well as how well they worked. Whether you have sensitive skin or not, whether you are the type of person that needs to have products that are long lasting, it does not matter because Dove Men+Care seems to have something for everyone and that for me is key.

Dove Men+Care1

I tried all of the products and loved how each of them built on each other. Whether it was the shampoo and conditioner, the skin conditioner or gel, they all were formulated for my skin and for me as a man and this is important too, as a man’s skin is different than a woman’s and companies should develop products as such and Dove Men+Care continues to do this.

Outside of the products themselves, I have to commend Dove Men+Care for their continued support of fathers. In so many of their campaigns they are portraying dads for the amazing role models that they are, and showing the importance of active fathers in the lives of their kids. I commend Dove Men+Care for this and know that this commitment is something that is long lasting and I, for one, am always excited to see what their next campaign will be!

If you are a guy and have never tried Dove Men+Care in the past, take the time to check them out. You will be amazed at the breadth and depth of their products and in the end you will be even more impressed with the results that you will see in your own appearance!

Having a #Bratfestinbed This Fathers Day #ad

June 16, 2015 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

#bratfestinbed
 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

About #BratfastInBed

Ah, Father’s Day. All year, Dad has been providing and caring for you, his family, while awaiting his special day. So this year, skip the omelets and extra ties, and thank Dad by giving him what he really wants: wake him up on Father’s Day morning with a juicy, sizzling brat and his favorite beverage.

Introducing Bratfast in Bed, a new Father’s Day tradition from Johnsonville that makes all of Dad’s Father’s Day dreams come true. Get the grilling started early. Really early. Wake up Dad with a juicy, sizzling brat, then post a picture on our Facebook wall or tweet it @Johnsonville and help us start a new Father’s Day tradition. Make Dad’s dreams come true with #BratfastInBed. The tasty way to celebrate Father’s Day.

So my family was put to the test and while they decided not to give me Bratfest in bed, they did decide to surprise me with Bratfest at lunch. Actually, after church yesterday, they told me to kick back and that they were going to surprise me with a special lunch. There have been times when I have been given a “special lunch” before made by the kids, and that was let’s just say, interesting, but I went along with it like a good dad should!

I knew that I had been given Johnsonville coupons, but we had not talked about when we would use them. To my surprise, my wife had used them to get quite the array of Brats, Sausage and Kielbasa. Talk about a lunch/dinner all mixed into one!

#bratfestinbed

I am usually then one doing the grilling, so when I heard the family getting the grill ready, that made me stand at attention. I was quickly told to stay put, and no butting in… so I know when to keep my mouth shut.

If I had known this was happening I would have made a video while it was as I loved how fun the Johnsonville video was, but alas, I was surprised, so I Couldn’t. However, my wife did take some photos which I am sharing below!

The family also surprised me with Sauteed Onions and Sauerkraut for the Brat & Kielbasa – talk about being in heaven!

#bratfestinbed

While many times, my wife will follow the advice of my friend Mike Vrobel from Dad Cooks Dinner such as he gave in his Pan Grilled Bratwurst recipe, she instead decided to differ a bit and boil up the  Johnsonville Bratwurst and and grill them for the last few minutes to keep the temperature and the feasibility for over-cooking minimal.

When she finally told me to come in I was floored by the amount of food and how great everything smelled. What was better though was how everything tasted! The bratwurst was tasty and amazingly light. Even my oldest, who tends to be the most picky at dinner, said that it was good and I too have to agree. The flavor was amazing, the cooking (from what they told me) was easy, and there was very little to deal with afterward, as everyone cleaned heir plates (which is always a good sign)!

This was a great early Fathers Day and a wonderful surprise!

Here is a Fun Recipe for some Fathers Day fun!

I am STOK ‘d to Be Grilling Again!!

May 6, 2015 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

STOKGrills
I enjoy cooking and making great food for my family. To do that I need great equipment and equipment that it easy to use and versatile and STOK grills fit all of these aspects but I wanted to try one out for myself tosee if my first impressions that I encountered at the Dad 2.0 conference in San Francisco were correct!STOKGrills

Also, with the weather getting warmer that means that I can get outside and grill again too. I love the taste of good grilled food, so I was excited to try out a STOK Grill and get grilling again! I was lucky enough to be able to work with STOK in trying out their new .STOKGrills

When the  arrived, I unpacked and assembled the new grill. The entire process took approximately two hours, but not being real good with my hands, others may be able to assemble this in a shorter amount of time. I was very impressed with the careful packing process used for shipping. Every part was protected and nothing was missing. The instructions were complete and it was easy to find each and every part without a problem.

STOKGrills

The assembly was very easy and I only needed a second person for about two minutes. The instructions were clear and included clear diagrams. The grill is attractive, sturdy and easy to move because of very sturdy casters. The best part begins as I start using this and grilling!

STOKGrills

As you can see the Grill, cover and more are slick. Even better is the technology and the idea behind the grill itself. STOK Grills are unique because they use inserts to allow you to grill the items that you want to grill the way you want to grill them. The Grill inserts easily come in and out of the grill itself and each is tailored to the type of food you are making.

So whether you love to grill vegetables, chicken steaks, full turkeys or even pizza, STOK has inserts to allow you to have fun with your family and I found the inserts to be SO easy to use, and the concept to be so unique. I have to say that I was very surprised to see that no other grill companies are using a similar concept, but I am glad that they are not, as this STOK grill is awesome and I am glad to have found it.

Some videos of the Stok Grill in action!

I put the STOK Grill to work and recorded a few videos of the grill in action.

As you can see the STOK Grill works amazingly well and thus far I have been very impressed with how well the food turns out when using the inserts.

As mentioned, I am so glad tat I was able to try the  and let me tell you, if you are looking for a great grill with unique inserts that will cook your food thoroughly, look no further than STOK Grill!

Get Grilling w/ @JCPenney this Fathers Day #JCPBackyard #giveaway

Find Great Fathers Day Gifts at JCPenney

When I think about grilling I don’t always think first about JCPenney, but let me tell you, I now stand corrected! I have not been in a physical JCPenney store in a while, but recently I decided to go there and I was amazed to see the breadth and depth of items that are available both in the store and even online. Two items that I recently tried from JCPenney were a few grilling tools that definitely are made to make any grillers’ life that much easier. Below are just a few of the items that I was not even aware the JCPenney carried!

jcpenney-charcoal-starter

Chimney Charcoal Starter, $40

jcpenney-pittmitt

Set of 4 Flexible Wire Skewers, $30

jcpenneyiback

Reversible Rib and Roasting Rack, $30

jcpenney-pittmitt

Pit Mitt Glove, $40

The two items I tried were the Pitt Mitt Glove and the Set of 4 Flexible Wire Skewers!

I have to say that both of these items were great. The Grill Mitt worked much better than I initially would have thought. In putting on the glove I was a bit worried at first that that the heat would transfer and not be contained, but I should not have been. The glove itself protected my hand completely and the raised areas on the glove repelled the heat. I will warn you to be wary and not touch the raised areas right after as they do stay warm to the touch, so keep that in mind.

I also tried out the skewers. When these arrived I was a bit ify on whether these would work as they looked like wires. Once I opened them thought they looked much less like wires and I found them to be easy to work with. I also found it easy to load meat and veggies on and it held the items well on the grill as well. I liked how it curved and allowed me to easily set it on the grill when I was working with it.

Both of these grilling items are great additions to my grilling arsenal and I highly recommend that you check this and the other great grilling items out, especially as you get ready for fathers day!
