Destin Florida is a Great Florida Vacation Spot for Families!

July 10, 2018 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Destin Florida, Beach

Beach vacation anyone? Destin, located along the Emerald Coast in Florida’s panhandle, is a must-visit with the family. As a dad, there is a ton to be had with the kiddos at the beach, and at Destin’s beaches in particular.

beach

Known around the world for its soft, white sand and emerald green waters, there is no end to fun beach experiences that happen here. Think about it. Snorkeling and exploring the world beneath the waves, as the kids get excited when they find small fish, crabs, sand dollars, and more. Building sandcastles on the beach with moats and bridges to protect the fortress from imaginary sea creature invasions. Relaxing under the sun while the kids bury your legs in the sand, turning you into a mermaid, and using their creativity to decorate your new tail with shells they find in the sand. And this is just the start of your beach vacation fun!

When you need a break from the sand and sun, Destin also offers a number of attractions that are fun for both dads and the kids. Check out these spots to add another level of excitement to your vacation.

Get Fit with Your Kids! 10 Tips on How to Workout while Having Fun

Get Fit with Your Kids! 10 Tips on How to Workout while Having Fun

Get Fit with Your Kids! 10 Tips on How to Workout while Having Fun

A lot of people feel as though they no longer have time to workout, keeping themselves in shape once they settle down and begin raising a family, but this actually isn’t true. In fact, having children can provide you with even more opportunities to workout than you may have had beforehand! Finding ways to keep fit can also slow down the aging process, and help you keep up with your kids as they grow. If you don’t believe us, just check out some of these innovative and engaging ways to keep your body in shape while also spending quality time with your little loved ones. This is fun family fitness for parents who are serious about achieving their goals.

Have a Dance Party Workout!

You may not realize how many calories it’s possible to burn by dancing, so let us blow your minds with a fun fact: a single hour of dancing can burn over 400 calories. Find some music that your kids like, and encourage them to shake it with you for a fun workout! You can have fun making up your own moves, get into dance-offs, try call-and-response challenges and more—anything to keep moving with the beat.

Jump Rope

The jump rope is one of the simplest toys ever invented, but it allows you to play a near limitless number of different games with your kids—and almost all of them are a serious cardio exercise workout. By some estimates, it’s possible to burn over 10 calories a minute while jumping rope—and it also tones your arms and legs.

Teach them a Sport

Getting your youngster interested in football, baseball or another outdoor sport is more than just a way to work out with them now—it’s also a way to get them interested in activities that could keep them active for the rest of their lives. If you have a park or a field near your house, grab a ball and go teach your kid some of the greatest games ever played.

Do Burpees

Burpees are an excellent cardio workout, and they’re also a way to give small children a quick lesson in sequences and pattern recognition. Basically, you start in a squat, jump into a plank, do a pushup, then bring your feet back to your hands and finish with a jumping jack. It’s lots of fun for them—and a real workout for you!

Take Walks with the Family Pet

If you have a dog (or any other animal that can walk on a leash, for that matter), then encourage your child to walk them with you. Even low impact cardio like walking can be a great way to prevent obesity and keep your heart healthy—plus, it’ll give you all some quality bonding time.

Have Fun with Hula Hoops!

Hula hoops have endured decades and decades of different trends in both toys and exercise, mostly because they’re excellent examples of both. Perfect for rain, shine, or even snow, hula hoops offer the potential of an intense cardio workout that feels just like playtime for your children. If you’re looking for a way to work out specific muscles, you can even find specific guides and instructions online.

Practice Yoga

Yoga is a wonderful way to stretch the muscles in your body while also relieving stress, and if you can get your kids to practice with you it’s an excellent strategy for calming them down. Help your children find inner peace now, and who knows how many future tantrums you could prevent?

Garden Together

Gardening isn’t a chore—it’s a wonderful way to enjoy fresh air and get some exercise at the same time. A lot of little ones enjoy digging around in the dirt, and what better way to help them stay active than by giving them a useful task? Hook your kid up with a small shovel, and have them dig up the topsoil so you can plant seeds.

Get Fit with Your Kids! 10 Tips on How to Workout while Having Fun

Try An At-home Aerobics Workout

Find a fitness DVD and pop it in, then invite your kids to follow along with you for a family workout! This is a fun way to keep your little ones active while also letting them watch a bit of television, which should keep them entertained while you all burn a few calories together.

Play Make-Believe in the Airplane Position

While lying on your stomach, bring your arms out from your sides at right angles and slowly raise your legs off of the floor. In addition to being a great way to tone your core and rear, this is a lot of fun for little kids—what child doesn’t love pretending to be an airplane?

Whether you’re a mom trying to stay healthy or a dad who wants to keep his gym body, these exercises can help you keep the body you prize without sacrificing time with the people you love. Select your favorite from the list, or try them all and become a super-parent!

Dads in the Limelight – Rob Nomura of DaddyEd.com

February 11, 2016 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Dads in the Limelight Series

Our 618th Dad in the Limelight is Rob Nomura of DaddyEd.com. I want to thank Rob Nomura for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing Rob Nomura with all of you.

robert-nomura1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)

I’m a homeschooling father and editor of DaddyEd.com. A website about a father’s (me) point of view on home schooling, education, and liberty.  I’m also the founder of WingChunLife.com, one of the world’s most well-known websites about Wing Chun kung fu. During the day I work as direct response copywriting and marketing consultant, RobertNomura.com, where I help business generate leads and drive new clients to their front door.

On my spare time I practice martial arts and recently got into Crossfit – a workout and physical training method. The result is that I’m stronger now than I’ve ever been. I can do pull-ups and handstand push-ups! I couldn’t do pull-ups as a kid.  My cardio is better too, but I don’t enjoy running. Although, I don’t mind sprints or jumping over things.

2) Tell me about your family

There’re four of us and we like to travel and spend a lot of time together. I think this is easier while our kids are still young. Who knows what will happen when they enter their teenage years.

3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?

The largest challenges happened while my kids were babies and toddlers. I didn’t know how to be a father, I was nervous and unsure about the future, and was under a lot of stress. Now, I’m more experienced and my kids are older and more selfeliant. So, if they burn their hand on the stove I just say, “I told you so.” My current challenge, though, is hitting my financial stride. This is a personal issue because I really thought I’d be a multi-millionaire by now.

4) What advice would you give to other fathers?

If you’re new to it, enjoy your child while young. After the first 2 or 3 years, you feel a whole lifetime passed by. But then your first kid hits 10 and you’re caught by surprise, “where did all the time go?”

robert-nomura

Then you think, “Shoot, he’ll be driving in 5 years; when we finish paying off the car!” If you’ve been at it a while and your kids are older and self-sufficient (but not adults), well, I don’t know what to do because that’s not where I’m at.

Currently, I find myself in a rush to transfer as much knowledge and experience to my kids before they grow up and fly the coop. I want to make sure their heads are on straight and don’t make needless mistakes. They’re old enough to absorb most of it, but there’s only so many hours in a day.

5) How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?

Poorly, I’m afraid. And I’ve recently made this discovery.

We had kids before most of our close friends did. And when you have young kids, your social life as a single person or as a young couple quickly takes a nosedive. We were practically off the radar for a number of years.

On top of that, we both (mommy and daddy) work hard and relatively long hours; luckily we enjoy what we do.

So what happens is that we spend a ton of time together and going out together. It’s broken up with a few family visits, especially du
wring holidays or some long weekends, and even fewer visits with friends. Most of our friends live far away, or now have very young kids — so it’s their turn to drop off the radar.

6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?robert-nomura

Spend more belly-to-belly time with my kids.

Most of the “older” fathers I’ve met spent a lot of their time away from their kids, usually at work, or sitting in traffic to and from work. And the kids are at school all day, and usually longer if they’re in after-school programs.

By design we’re together often. We homeschool, I work from home, and mommy works about 15 minutes away and has somewhat flexible hours. I think it’s been great, and healthy for us (mommy and daddy), to experience our kids grow up firsthand. For instance, we don’t have to learn who our kids are, or learn about their personalities through a written evaluation from school. I think it’s wrong when a schoolteacher knows your kids better than you do.

Also, I think it’s healthy for kids to have a close and personal relationship with their fathers. Dads are just different from moms. But this is something that may not be possible, or optimal, if dad leaves home at 6am and gets home at 6pm, 5 days a week. And then has client dinners where he comes home after 10pm, and of course business trips where he’s gone 2 to 5 days in a row, plus weekend work at the office.

Not all dads (or moms) have that kind of schedule, but I’ve met many who do.

7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?

There’s no right way to be a good father. The good news is there are many ways to do it right.

Do the best you can, stay open to being better at it, and if you make a mistake say so and try to correct it or take steps to avoid making it again. You’ll save your kids from unneeded trauma later in life.

robert-nomura

8) What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?

It’s the small things, really.

  • Watching my kids learn to walk and talk.
  • Teaching them to ride a bike and swim.
  • Listening to them laugh.
  • Seeing how their personalities change as they get older.
  • Seeing them do something on their own and thinking, “They’ll be okay even if I get hit by a bus tomorrow.”

If you have any questions for Rob Nomura, please leave a comment here and I will make sure that he gets them so that he may be able to respond!

Also, do you know a Dad in the Limelight? If so, please email me their contact information so that they too can be a part of this series!

A Day Out With Thomas the Train – Fun for the Whole Family #dowt

May 17, 2014 by dadofdivas 1 Comment

A Day Out With Thomas the Train

For mother’s day this year we had a blast and were able to go out and celebrate the day at Greenfield Village for A Day out with Thomas the Train as well as just having fun at a great place! We have always loved Greenfield Village and J-Mom and I have great memories of growing up at the village and we were excited to share this experience with our girls as well.

On top of this my girls love the music and cartoons of Thomas the Train. We actually decided to keep the fact that Thomas was going to be there until we got there and let me tell you, they were completely ecstatic! Their high pitched screams were ear piercing… I think I am just starting to be able to hear again.

Greenfield-Village

I wanted to take a few minutes to share with you some of the great things about the day and about the event. If you have never heard of the The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, get ready for a step back in time. This HUGE venue is filled with amazing treasures for you and your family to share. I will be focusing my comments on Greenfield Village today, but the Henry Ford Museum also is amazing and you could easily spend two days wandering around this museum, learning and experiencing everything.

At Greenfield Village, Henry Ford brought together a wide array of homes that range in age from ones built in the 1600’s in England to slave quarters to famous locations such as Thomas Edison’s Menlo Park Laboratory, the home that Henry Ford was born in, the Wright Brothers Store and more. On top of all of this, you have working craftsmen making beautiful items such as hand blown glass, tin smiths, pottery, and more. Even better are the people who work at the village as they are all highly trained, and many are even wearing and working in period outfits and act as if they are from that era as well.

Greenfield-Village

One example of this was the working farm. The Firestone (Yes, like the tires) home is a beautiful home from the 1800’s and at Greenfield Village it is still in working condition and the people working daily at it come straight out of the 1800’s as well. That means from working the land to cooking in the home, men and women are in traditional garb and they work hard to make the farm a working one. I can tell that the people working at this farm and at a number of the other period houses and locations work very hard at their job!

You can also have fun learning, not only seeing how people lived, but also how they played and had fun. At this location there were a number of times where our kids were able to have fun and play games that kids in the 1800’s and early 1900’s played. They loved it, and I had a blast trying to let them know about how people lived when they didn’t have indoor plumbing, electricity or a Nintendo WII!

Greenfield-Village

On top of all of this was the actual event that I was hear to report on, which was a Day out with Thomas! Not only was it fun to be able to see the actual Thomas the Train, but also the park was alive with fun Thomas related games, movies, and even Sir Topham Hat! You are surrounded by the world of Thomas the Train and you can even leave the park with a bag filled with Thomas the Train items as there is a gift shop specifically geared toward the fan.

Greenfield-Village

Riding on Thomas was fun as well. I think that my girls had wished that they could have gone up right to the front and touched Thomas, but we were sitting in the back of the train and because of this when you exited the train you ended up having to go away from where Thomas was (in the front of the train). The train was also on a pretty tight schedule so they were trying to keep people moving along. So my suggestion is that if you really want your child to see Thomas up close, make sure to get there prior to your allotted time and make sure to sit up toward the front. Just know that if you are in a coal fire driven train, there is the possibility that you might get some soot on your clothes (We did and we were sitting toward the back).

Day-Out-With-Thomas

All-in-all, this day was a blast, from the temporary Thomas tattoos to the full scale amazing Lionel Train Display on site, they thought of everything for the Thomas lover. On top of this, at this location, you get even more, with the rich history and beauty that surrounds the village itself! I highly recommend spending a Day Out With Thomas yourself and if you are in the Dearborn Michigan area anytime soon, take a day or two to step back in time at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village – you will not forget the experience!

If you are a Thomas the Train fan, there are still a ton of dates out there , you really should check them out today – http://www.ticketweb.com/promo/dowt/index.html

What’s Your Ista? I Love These Shirts! ( @whatsyourista )

May 10, 2012 by dadofdivas 33 Comments

About the Product

Marlee is a school guidance counselor and a designer, who wants to save the world and make it more beautiful at the same time (peaceista). Amy is a special education teacher, who is a self-described word nerd (wordista or nerdista?) who loves the idea of creating new words with a clever sounding suffix. Between us, we have 5 children to put through college, I mean, who we are raising. Marlee and Amy have been friends since they met in the “transfer student” line at Clemson University in 1986.

Their kids are tennisista, zombieista, spikeista, artista, and pizza-ista (which is just fun to say—try it).

How It All Started

Dig if you will this picture, over a glass or 2 of the house merlot, the two founders lamented the current state of the economy and our husbands’ job prospects. Someone said something like “Forget fashionista, I’m a recessionista.” Next thing you know, they were all throwing out other ista ideas. They got to thinking that it would be fun to create Ista T-shirts.

Part of their mission is to be generous with others. They know that many organizations have been suffering from a lack of donations. They know that passionate people like their customers will have their own pet charities. They want their customers to suggest charities and they will donate a portion of their profits.

My Take on the Shirts

What I love about the shirts is that each one is unique to the person is wearing it. So no matter if you are a bookista (my wife) or artista (my daughter), you can have assured that is perfectly aligned with your personality. My wife and daughter loved it there shirts as you can see in the pictures and I can say that it was fun giving them the gift as well. The website for the company is well laid out and there is so much there for someone to choose from. On top of this if you can’t find something the company states that you can even make your own ista as well. I highly encourage everyone to check out this company and the shirts that they provide and find your own unique ista!

Book Review – 50 Dangerous Things (You should let your children do)

May 14, 2011 by dadofdivas 5 Comments

About the Book

Fifty Dangerous Things (you should let your children do) is the first book from the people who created Tinkering School. With projects, activities, experiences, and skills ranging from “Superglue Your Fingers Together” to “Play with Fire,” along with 48 other great ideas, the book is a manifesto for kids and parents alike to reclaim childhood. Easy to follow instructions, fun facts, and challenging undertakings that will engage and inspire whole households.

Why Fifty Dangerous Things? First off, Five Dangerous Things just weren’t enough (although the audience at TED thought it was a good starting point). More importantly, there are many “dangerous” things that are interesting, eye-opening, enlightening or just plain fun! And while there are aspects of danger in virtually everything we do, the trick is to learn how mastery actually minimizes danger. Most of us learn how to walk without toppling over at a very young age, so that walking is no longer dangerous. Next we learn to negotiate stairs. Why stop there? Why not practice and become proficient at walking on the roof or walking on a tightrope? These are just a few of the Fifty Dangerous Things that we invite you to try.

Take a peek and step into a world of danger and discovery.

About the Author

Gever Tulley was raised in Northern California, in a town that barely exists now. Casper was once a bustling mill town, but when the logging dried up in the early mid-century, the shacks that housed the millworkers became the home to beatniks who wanted to “get out of the City, man.” Thus began a childhood spent tagging along with his older brother on adventures that covered the deserted cliffs and beaches of the pre-touristed Mendocino coast.

The holder of numerous technology patents, Gever Tulley’s first career was propelled by his voracious self-directed quest for knowledge. From operating systems to compilers to CGI, he has worked in nearly every field in the applied Computer Sciences. But in 2005, he made what he often refers to as “the greatest mistake of his life” when he started a summer program for kids called Tinkering School. The school was a laboratory where Gever could experiment with new pedagogies that focussed on hands-on self-directed learning. That first year, Tinkering School started being noticed by the media and educators around the world – because the kids (ages 7 to 16) had built a roller coaster with 120 feet of track. In the years since, kids have gone on to build sailboats, electric vehicles, and even a working hang glider. But one would be missing the point if it were just about what they built, Tinkering School is giving these kids a chance to amaze themselves with what they are capable of, and to discover just how responsible and capable they really are.

In 2007 he first spoke at TED, giving a talk titled “Five Dangerous Things (you should let your children do).” The talk has been seen by millions of people around the world, and continues to be blogged and commented on to this day. In that talk he made an off-hand comment about a forth-coming book entitled “Fifty Dangerous Things (you should let your children do)” – the comment turned into a weekly in-flux of email asking where the book could be purchased. After meeting with dozens of publishers, who rejected the idea as “not kid-friendly”, he and Julie Spiegler self-published the book on Amazon – where it became an over-night sensation, stirring up the media on three continents.

My Take on the Book

This book was a blast to read and to try with my own daughters. While there were some activities that I did not feel comfortable enough to try with my three year old, my 6.5 year old was definitely game for trying out some of these things. I loved how the book was set up with easy to follow instructions, duration and difficulty level as well as a whole section on field notes for your budding scientist to explore with their own friends. I also enjoyed the resources at the end of the book with answers to the “why” question regarding why you should do these activities and the educational benefit from them. Overall, this book is a definitely keeper!
