Here’s How You Can Support Dads on Father’s Day With Facebook

June 16, 2017 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Facebook - Fathers Day

People come to Facebook to share life’s most important moments and experiences — for dads, it’s a place to celebrate fatherhood with friends and family and be celebrated for all the things they do.
Over the past year, more than 185,000 new dads took to Facebook to commemorate their first days as a father with a life event. Last year, photo and video posts spiked significantly on Father’s Day, with over 830 million photos and videos being shared on June 19th, 2016.
This year, Facebook is providing new ways for you to celebrate your dad or a father figure in your life. Details about the new Father’s Day features can be found below, along with assets for each new update.
Facebook - Fathers Day
  • Send a personalized card: This Sunday you might see a message from Facebook in your News Feed letting you know it’s Father’s Day and inviting you to share art and photo cards with a dad or loved one. On mobile, you can personalize some of the cards by adding a photo, and if you have a father or child listed as a relationship on Facebook, some of the cards may pre-fill with both of your profile pictures.
  • Brighten up your photos: In Facebook Camera, you can find a new set of Father’s Day stickers as well as colorful Father’s Day-themed frames. If you swipe to the right of News Feed, you can find the frames in the effects tray or use the stickers after you’ve taken or uploaded a photo.
  • Support a cause in honor of dad: In the US, start a Facebook fundraiser for a personal and/or nonprofit cause in honor of dad. You can raise money for yourself, a friend or someone or something not on Facebook.
  • Go Live with dad: Families who can’t be together this Father’s Day can still enjoy the day together. Live With lets you invite others into your live broadcast, so you can share your screen and hang out in Live, even if you’re in different places. You can use it to celebrate dad by inviting him to join you on Live and sharing how much he means to you, all alongside friends and family.
Facebook - Fathers Day
Of course, Facebook isn’t the only place to share your thanks for all your dad or father figure has done. Messenger and Instagram, also part of the Facebook family, are also offering some unique ways to show support:

  • Chat with dad: Celebrate dad with the whole family by joining a group video call on Messenger. All you have to do is jump into an existing group conversation with your family, or create a new one. Then tap on the video icon on the upper right of the screen to enter the video chat, and everyone in the group will be notified. You can also use Messenger Camera to create customized photos and videos with Father’s Day-themed frames. And as an extra “thank you,” you can even use Messenger bots to find the perfect gift for dad.
  • Add a sticker to your Instagram story: You can find a new set of stickers to help celebrate Father’s Day. Whether you’re spending the day with your dad or sharing your love from afar, just open the camera and take a photo or video, then add as many stickers as you want.

Facebook Shares Best Practices for Spring Cleaning

March 19, 2017 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Spring Cleaning
It’s official, Spring is (finally) in the air, and you know what that means: Spring Cleaning is upon us. For many people, the new season provides a great opportunity to organize their home and online life.
  • It may sound surprising to turn online to tidy up offline, but Marketplace, which Facebook launched late last year,is a great place to start. Marketplace allows millions of people to discover, browse, buy and sell items with one another locally. Now getting rid of items that no longer serve you has never been easier. From the kids’ old toys to the furniture you’ve out grown, Marketplace offers a simple way to sell products in your neighborhood in an ultra-convenient way.
  • Spring Cleaning can be just as much about sprucing your digital space as it is your physical one. Stay connected with the people, places and things that inspire you by refreshing your News Feed Preferences and Ad Preferences. You can prioritize who to see first to make posts from the people and Pages you love appear at the top of your News Feed.
  • To stay organized through the Spring Cleaning season and beyond, keep your activities planned and organized with Facebook Events – You can send invites, see who’s going/interested/invited, share directions or a map, distribute messages to the guest list and share photos all in one place.
  • Facebook Groups provide inspiration, ideas, advice and support before Spring Cleaning even begins. More than a billion people use Facebook Groups every month to connect in meaningful ways – including around things they are passionate about – whether it be something universal like home organization tips (Home Organization 101) or more specific like Konmari Adventures, a group about Marie Kondo’s book: The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. You’ll be surprised how many people are experiencing the same things as you!

A Better World Provides Meaningful Entertainment

June 30, 2011 by dadofdivas 1 Comment

A Better World, a Facebook game that rewards players not just for in-game activities but also for real world acts of kindness and expressions of gratitude, has soared to more than 120,000 players.

This game was an interesting one. In doing some research it seems like the game was popular with women, but I have to say that I found many redeeming properties to it as well. What was nice about the game was the fact that it was not merely a brainless banter. Instead, this game makes you look at yourself and what you would do to if given a chance to make a difference.

Each portion of the game is there to help you find ways in which to raise one’s self-esteem. I found this to be true as in many of the games it encourages doing more for others and to make positive choices in your daily life. I can say as a father that these are all things that I want my own daughters to learn and if a game (online or otherwise) can help with this process, if should definitely be one to consider for everyone’s family.

The game offers more than 15 locations for community members to explore, including the:

  • Department of Do Good – A place you can share real world good deeds you’ve performed and see what other members of the community have done
  • Gratitude Grotto – A charming area where you can reveal what you are thankful for and express your support for messages left by others

  • Sanctuary of Hope – A building where you can communicate your hopes and dreams and send encouragement to other players
  • Arcade – A play area with uplifting mini-games to enjoy alone or with friends
  • A new feature is the Better Pets Pet Shop, filled with adorable puppies, cute kittens or even a magical unicorn

This game was developed by ToonUps, a digital entertainment company that has focused on developing digital content that encourages a positive outlook and altruistic behavior for more than a decade.

ToonUps hopes A Better World’s original approach could usher in a new genre of “do good gaming.”  Research shows that being encouraged to think about things they are thankful for and doing activities that provide encouragement to others improves their mental, emotional and spiritual well being.

For me, I found this game to be fun, engaging and meaningful. I found the messages that it contained inspirational and I could tell that these would definitely be ones that I would want to share with my own kids, as they related much to giving back and making a difference, two things that I feel strongly about! If you feel this was as well, I encourage you to go and check out this new game today!

Play A Better World at http://www.facebook.com/ABetterWorld

I was given the opportunity to share my thoughts and opinions on A Better World. I received a gift card as a thank you for my participation. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Renowned Photog Critiques Your Snapshots Via Facebook

July 20, 2010 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Upload Your Favorite Amateur Photos to Kelsh’s Facebook Page, “How to Photograph Your Baby,” and Receive Professional-Level Tips for Improvement Mixed with a Dose of Humor

If you ever dreamed of having a renowned professional photographer provide constructive feedback on your amateur family photos, now is your chance.

Nick Kelsh, photographer and author of nine books including the best-selling, “How to Photograph Your Baby” (HowToPhotographYourBaby.com) and “Naked Babies,” will provide a free assessment of your photos via his Facebook page, “How to Photograph Your Baby.” Just upload your photo and Nick provides feedback on a daily basis.

Mixed in with Kelsh’s didactic advice on anything such as lighting, distance, cropping and composition is a good dose of the photographer’s humor.

After reading the manual on her camera from cover to cover, Facebook fan Kathy McLoud Dammes could not figure out how to take indoor pictures that are not dark or blurry. Kelsh’s response: “Kathy, you’re a train wreck! We have to get you fixed.” The photographer then personally resolved McLoud Dammes’ issues.

Sharlene Meestma Hyink was having trouble aligning her subjects in front of a horizontal line. Kelsh quickly helped her out with this perplexing issue. Says Meestma Hyink, “I have learned a lot from reading your page. I don’t know of many professional photographers that would take the time that you have to look at all our photos and give us suggestions the way you have.”

Kelsh is happy to help. “By offering assistance to amateur photographers via my ‘How to Photograph Your Baby’ Facebook page, anyone can capture memories effortlessly and compose images that will be cherished for years to come,” says Kelsh.

For more information, visit “How to Photograph Your Baby” on Facebook.

Book Review & Giveaway – Facebook Fairytales

May 11, 2010 by dadofdivas 6 Comments

About the Book

Once upon a time there was an online social network called Facebook, and it brought together people from all over the globe, helping them to reignite romances, launch careers, and even find organ donors. Facebook Fairytales brings to light inspirational “happy endings” stemming from the increasingly popular social-networking site. Author Emily Liebert crafts captivating narratives of real-life stories from interviews with Facebook users who have used the site’s many applications to find biological parents, relay messages to loved ones during the Mumbai terrorist attacks, donate money to Chinese orphanages, and try to hunt down a hit-andun criminal. Readers will relate to these tales and, simultaneously, be charmed by the little spark of magic that sets them apart from your everyday success stories.

Liebert also interviews and shares the story of Chris Hughes, Facebook cofounder who worked on the Obama new-media campaign, revolutionizing the use of social-networking sites as a political tool. Complete with an introductory interview with Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook Fairytales is a collection of tales that will inspire you to seek out your “happily ever after” on the world’s most popular social-networking site—and maybe find Prince Charming along the way.

About the Author
Emily Liebert is an award-winning, internationally published writer and author. Most recently, she edited Kerry Kennedy’s New York Times best-seller Being Catholic Now: Prominent Americans Talk About Change in the Church and the Quest for Meaning. She’s written for such publications as Elite Traveler, Robb Report, Gotham, and Cottages & Gardens and has interviewed a long list of celebrities and high-profile subjects. Currently, Liebert is finishing final edits on her forthcoming, debut novel—Conversations with Friends.

My Take on the Book
The author had a great idea when she thought of this book. With Facebook being as large as it is, I have seen many amazing things occur through this electronic medium. I have seen people come together to support a friend and I have seen love spark up from lost loves… the tales are endless.

This book takes only 25 of these inspiring tales and presents them to the readers. I was interested to see what they had to share as I too have found lost friends on facebook and it truly made my world that much smaller once I started using it.

In reading the book, I found it engaging and a very quick read. It compelled you to read further and to understand and relate to the stories that were being told.

One of the stories that I found to be amazing was the young man who found his biological father and in doing so his biological mother through Facebook. Talk about crazy!

While I have been using Facebook for some time, this book reinforces the good things that can happen in social networking and gives you a great feeling as you set the book down!

If this book sounds like one you would like for your own library you can find it on Amazon!

    Connecting with other Dads

    July 13, 2009 by dadofdivas 1 Comment

Recently I have been thinking a lot about connections. Connections with old friends, making new friends. I even guest posted about this over at Discovering Dad recently. As I have been posting as a Dad blogger I have come to find that there truly is a community of guys out there that want to talk about their experience being fathers and talk about issues that relate to men in specific. I have met some great individuals through cyberspace and have connected with them in various venues such as through my profiles on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter or Linked In.

I have go so far as making my own fan page for Dad of Divas, with limited results. I have joined a number of facebook groups aimed at dads including:

    Daddy Bloggers
    The Daddy Experience

    Dads are People Too
    The Daddy Brain Dads’ Group
    Dads Across The Net

I also lately have been a bit more active on the Art of Manliness Community site, and even had a chance to meet in person with one of the members that was visiting in my area. We had a great lunch and I am looking forward to keeping in touch with him.

I am very interested in hearing people’s thoughts on how they connect with other dads. Have you made friends through social networking, blogging, or other venues? How do you balance these friendships with being a father, husband, employee, etc.?

I look forward to hearing your responses!
