Is a Gaming PC or Laptop Better for You?

May 12, 2022 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Gaming on laptops has often been frowned on in the industry, and there are plenty of good reasons why. Simply put, laptops have never really offered the most optimal way to game. However, the old days of laptops that didn’t have a great design or enough power for gaming are long over, and these days there are plenty of excellent, high-power gaming laptops to consider if you are looking for a new gaming machine. If you want to upgrade your gaming setup, then one of the main decisions that you might need to make is whether to get a desktop PC or a laptop for gaming. Some of the main things to consider before you make a choice include:

Gaming PC

Physical Space

When it comes to choosing between a PC or a laptop, how much physical space you have available for your gaming computer setup might be one of the biggest considerations to make. While you can now get mini gaming PCs and smaller options that work well, traditional gaming PCs can be quite bulky and come with various components that you’ll need a fair amount of space for. On the other hand, laptops are smaller and easier to fit if you only have a small room to game in or don’t have a huge desk for everything you need.

Cost

Another consideration to make when you are deciding if you want to get a gaming PC or a laptop is the cost. Both can be quite costly depending on the specs; however, laptops might come in cheaper overall if you are looking to buy a ready-made machine. This is because when you buy a laptop, the cost will end there as you’ll have all the basics that you need including the monitor, keyboard, and touchpad instead of having to buy everything separately, as is often the case with a PC. However, that being said, you can often build your own gaming PC much more easily compared to a laptop, and with the option to shop around for the different parts, this could make a difference to how much you will pay.

Laptop

Upgrades

If you are the type of person who just likes to upgrade the whole machine when things start to run slowly, then a laptop might be more ideal for you. Laptops are not usually quite as upgradable as PCs, which is seen as a downside by some gamers. On the other hand, if you love the idea of customising your computer and adding the components that you like, a PC is the perfect option.

Portability

Finally, consider where you are going to be gaming. If you’re planning to game in a room at home where you’ll be set up all the time, then a PC is worth considering. However, if you want the freedom to take your games with you and enjoy playing them wherever you like, a good gaming laptop offers a level of portability that’s just impossible with a PC.

When it comes to choosing a new gaming computer, keep these factors in mind to decide if a PC or a laptop is the best choice for you.

Should I Buy a PC or Mac for My Child in School? Know the Differences

April 29, 2020 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

When our child is ready for a laptop for school, we may be wondering ‘should I buy a PC or Mac?’ Read these differences between the two to help your decision.

The everlasting debate between PC and Mac devices has been largely a matter of personal taste. But as computers make their way into standard school curriculums, it’s time to accept the reality that they aren’t all built the same.

For example, some schools and universities may only support one type of operating system. In that case, your subjective preferences shouldn’t influence your ultimate decision. But when your learning environment accepts both options, which is the best for your child?

Should I buy a PC or Mac? You’ll get a different answer depending on who you talk to. Let’s outline the differences between these devices and help you make your own informed decision.

  1. PC or Mac: Price

Apple doesn’t outsource the creation of Mac devices. They are an all-in-one package with limited opportunities for customization. You’ll have a hard time shopping around for low-range Mac computers.

And in general, Macs are more expensive than PCs. The iMac is the Apple equivalent of a desktop PC. The cheapest iMac on the market costs over $1,000.

In contrast, you can find a pre-built desktop PC for around $400 to $500. Though it’s important to mention that all Apple devices come with built-in monitors. A monitor for your PC will set you back an additional $100.

The story is the same for laptop computers. The cheapest MacBook on the market sits around $1,000. In comparison, you could find a functional laptop PC for $200 to $300.

It’s important to consider a warranty as it pertains to price. All Mac computers come with a one-year warranty and an optional warranty of three years for an additional surcharge.

Pre-built desktop PCs usually come with a one-year warranty, though some manufacturers may offer more or less. If you build the PC by scratch, PC parts tend to come with at least a three-year warranty.

  1. PC or Mac: Software

The software itself is the big difference between PC and Mac operating systems. Although the devices are both computers, they follow different trains of thought and logic.

For example, clicking the red “X” on your PC will close the window. But on a Mac, the equivalent action will minimize it in your dock. You’ll have to learn new shortcuts, like how to Ctrl-Alt-Delete on a Mac.

These subtle differences are why most people say the choice of operating system is completely subjective.

However, a significant portion of the software is exclusive to one type of computer. Your child’s school system will inform you if their software works on both types of devices. Luckily, the most pervasive applications such as Microsoft Office and the Adobe Creative Suite are available on both operating systems.

As a rule of thumb, most software creators provide support for PCs over Macs. With a program such as Apple Boot Camp, it’s possible to run the Windows operating system on Mac devices. With this setup, your child will have access to any type of software.

  1. PC or Mac: Virus Protection

Safe web browsing habits are learned. With years of computer experience under our belts, we know to avoid common sources of infection, such as a flashing, mysterious download button. But your child will have to develop this intuition over time.

This is all to say that virus protection is a significant consideration for any young person’s computer. Macs come pre-installed with a robust antivirus system. And since Macs are a smaller part of the computer market, fewer hackers create viruses for these devices.

Thanks to Windows 10, desktop PCs finally come with their own built-in virus protection. Windows Defender gets the job done, but you may have to use a third-party program to supplement some of its shortcomings.

For years, it’s been well-known that Macs encounter fewer viruses than their PC counterparts. But times are changing. Macs are taking more of the market share — and more attention from malicious coders.

From 2018 to 2019, the number of virus threats on Macs increased fourfold. In fact, Macs now encounter twice as many threats as PC users. The owners of Mac computers can no longer surf the internet with an air of invincibility.

  1. PC or Mac: Prevalence

PCs are more popular than Mac computers. From libraries to offices, the vast majority will use the Windows operating system rather than Mac OS. The prevalence of Windows determines more than virus risk and software support.

After all, your child is still learning the basics of computers. The operating system you choose will create the foundation they build on in the future. And that matters seeing as PCs and Macs behave so differently from each other.

If you want to ensure your child is comfortable with computers, it makes sense to choose PC. However, many creative professionals use Macs for tasks like painting, sound, and graphic design. If your child is interested in these professions, then choosing a Mac just makes sense.

  1. PC or Mac: Lifespan

Most people report that Macs have longer life expectancies than PCs. This is thanks to Apple controlling and manufacturing every component to their own standards. Apple computers definitely cost more, but you’re likely to get your money’s worth.

When things do go wrong, you have to take your Mac to the Apple Store for a proper repair. If your PC is on the fritz, you can sometimes make the repairs on your own or bring it to any computer repair outlet. The Apple Store is almost always more expensive.

Should I Buy a PC or Mac?

At the end of the day, there’s no right or wrong answer. Instead of asking “should I buy a PC or Mac,” ask, “what would my children like?” After all, this computer is for them.

If they’re happy with it, then so are you.

Make Your Computing Experiences Easier For Yourself

May 8, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Make Your Computing Experiences Easier For Yourself

Many of us spend much of our time a day on a computer. It’s not uncommon to have to use one for your career, and even if not, heading home and managing accounts, our schedule, keeping up with old friends, or simply learning something new is usually all conveniently found on the computer nowadays.

But while we’re a long way from dial-up internet and floppy discs, even in 2019 computers can have problems or small inconveniences that can aggravate you or simply stall progress, which is the last thing you want after a heavy workday. Thankfully, there are tools to make your computing experience easier for yourself, tools that can help you feel more comfortable in using them daily. Not only will you be better equipped to manage your normal responsibilities with those tools, but you make be able to branch out and enjoy doing something you never thought possible.

For example, adjusting your settings might help you work from device to device with ease, or perhaps save the notes you need for later. With that in mind, let us consider how you can make the computing experience easier:

Organize Your Files

Indexing your files can be done in most modern operating systems automatically, but even then, it’s important to organize them well. Placing them in named folders and subfolders, dating certain documents, placing only essential documents on your desktop in the form of a shortcut and not the actual file, learning how to cloud backup those files after saving them and also making USB or physical backups can ensure that your files are where you need them, when you need them, how you need them, and all this even in the face of potentially losing them.

Learn Keyboard Shortcuts

You might find that simply interacting with a computer takes its precious time, particularly in certain complex programs. Learning keyboard shortcuts can often help you with this to an extensive degree. For example, learning how to force quit an application without losing your other work can be important. If in a complex and creative program such as Photoshop, learning the keyboard shortcuts for the brush, crop, lasso and color pallette tools (just to scratch the very surface,) can help you save valuable time, and ensure that you’re face to face with your creativity from the get go.

Learning keyboard shortcuts can often work from program to program, but they will all define this differently, so don’t be afraid to get to grips with this and cement that in your head over time.

Learn To Touch Type

Touch typing is where you place your fingers in a balanced and symmetrical line on the keyboard, allowing you to use your fingers in the quickest and most efficient manner when typing words. Not only can this help you use all your fingers, but that will naturally raise your WPM (words per minute,) and you’ll heavily reduce the risk of hand injuries from typing too long. This is a great idea for those who suffer from issues such as carpal tunnel.

With this advice, we hope you can make the computing experience easier for yourself.

Win A New PC Powered By Intel For You And A Friend!

December 14, 2016 by dadofdivas 16 Comments

Post sponsored by Mirum. Opinions are 100% my own

Last year, Intel gave away laptops to 3 people with inspiring stories to share. This year, they want to do the same – but for you and a friend! The idea behind this is that you submit a story about a person that deserves a new PC powered by Intel and who knows, they could end up winning one and you could too!

Jeff Gorsline

For me, if I was to share a person that I think deserves a PC powered by Intel it would be a father in my community by the name of Jeff Gorsline. Why? Well, Jeff is the type of person that is not only engaged and committed to his profession, but he is also committed to making a difference in our community. In our community, Jeff Gorsline has built a nonprofit called Many Hands that is a 501c3 nonprofit organization established in 2012.

Many-Hands-Logo

It’s mission is to be the resource for communities in Michigan that wish to respond to systemic problems such as youth hunger or individual families experiencing a health or financial crisis.  The goal is to create competency as a volunteer-driven organization and harness the resourcefulness of informal charitable efforts with the aim of creating effective, trustworthy standards in all of the chosen projects to deliver maximum value for recipients, volunteers, and sponsors. This organization has made a huge impact in our community but also in many other communities around the state of Michigan. With everything that Jeff Gorsline does, I know that a new PC powered by Intel would impact his life and the organizational effectiveness of Many Hands tremendously and thus, I would add his name to the list!

hp-computer

Who knows, in looking at all of the possibilities for great PC’s powered by Intel that are available right now if I was to select one for Jeff Gorsline, I might suggest the  HP Pavilion Liquid Platinum Gaming or the HP Pavilion Manhattan Gold or even the Dell Inspiron

hp-computer

I could also win a new PC in this program, sponsored by Intel, if I drive the most contest entries of participating bloggers. See the OFFICIAL RULES for more information.

This post is for my participation in the Intel Influencer Program.

As you try and let this sink in, when I am talking about personal data, this includes things like signing into your email, shopping online, paying bills, etc. By doing this in the public, you potentially could be sharing the next victim because it is just that, public.

 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

I was lucky enough to be able to try out the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 over the last few weeks and I have to say that it has been so much fun to try with my daughters. The tablet is easy to use and has a ton of games for the kids and parents to enjoy! Below is a some information on the tablet as well as a video review with my thoughts!

Kid’s specialized UI

Galaxy Tab 3 Kids offers a Kids-friendly UX that is very simple and easy for kids to use. Card style applications are big and colorful to grab the child’s attention. A variety of characters are available and can be changed for fun.

Safe Usage

Galaxy Tab Kids is not only for kids, but also useful for parents to control their kids’ usage. Parents can manage the apps which they’d like to put on Kids Mode through Parental Control function. Also, Time Manager limits the time kids can use this electronic device,. Moreover, parents can enjoy normal tablet mode through Standard Mode, so parents don’t need to buy their own tablet!

Safe Usage

Galaxy Tab 3 Kids is tested by U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), so your kids can avoid any chemical risks. Also, the protective cover allows your kids to freely use tablet in any way, as the cover protects the tablet against falls and scratches.

My Take on the Tablet
