One of the main reasons we went on our trip to the east coast was in response to what my oldest learned this year in school about colonial America. That being said, we were excited to be able to go to Boston, to the heart of so much history. So we ended up spending a full day in Boston. We got up early and left the Emerson Inn in Rockport, Massachusetts. While it said it was only about 37 miles it also said it would take us about 2 hours to go there with traffic (talk about crazy!). Luckily we found some detours that cut the time down and we got there safe and sound by about 9am, leaving us a ton of time to start exploring the city.
After we parked we found the Old Town Trolley Tours, for which we had passes. We did not have far to walk as this was a jump on, jump off type of service and we were quickly picked up! The beautiful thing about the Old Town Trolley Tours is that you get a very personable guide that will engage you and bring you everywhere you can think of around town, even over to Cambridge and south of town too. As you move throughout the tour you can get off at any stop and then come back to the same stop and e=wait for another ride. Usually a trolley will be there within 15-20 minutes of one another.
We really took advantage of the trolley and it allowed us to see much more of the city than we would have in the time that we were there.
We decided to use some passes that we had for the Boston Tea Party experience. This experience was an amazing mix of entertainment and education and I even found my daughters watching intently to what was being said and asking good questions for the actors. The people in the roles are young and energetic and do a great job of helping you visualize what it would have been like to have been a part of the revolution and a part of the Boston Tea Party. One of the things that I loved about this experience was the fact that you get to see one of the two remaining boxes that are still intact that were saved from the actual Boston Tea Party (what an artifact). We all left this experience so much more educated and we all said at the end of the day that this was one of our favorite parts of the day!
We continue to explore the city. We stopped by the Boston Public Library and were in awe at this palace of literary wisdom. We truly wished that we had a library like this in our own town! We walked through some of the oldest cemeteries in the city. We were amazed at how well the stones were preserved. You can tell that they are doing a great job at trying to keep history alive throughout the city. My kids throughout seeing the graves of people like Samuel Adams, Alexander Hamilton, Paul Revere and more was pretty awesome.
We only were able to stay in the city for a day which was not long enough. We could easily have stayed for another day or two exploring the city and maybe we will need to do this again in the future to fully immerse ourselves again in the history or the majesty that the city of Boston offers visitors.
Have you ever visited Boston? What is your favorite part of Boston?
