Get Ready for Adventure, Great Characters & More!

July 13, 2020 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot

About the Book

As a young chipmunk, shy, bookish Rockford T. Honeypot had dreams of thrilling adventures across the forest. However, timid of danger and germs, his only adventures were found in books and in his imagination. When his family abandons him after a mistake that destroys their hazelnut business, Rockford sets off on a legendary journey beyond his wildest dreams. From exploring cuisines with a famous chef, training with ancient warrior monks, flying on giant hawks, finding true love, and much more, Rockford recounts his epic origin story of hardship, perseverance, and fortune.

My Take on the Book
This was such a fun book that brings together a slew of characters that you will not soon forget. The characters are fun and on each page you will go on the adventure with the characters. The message of living a full life resounds in this book and anyone that reads it will definitely think to themselves about how they are living the fullest life that they can. Also, I loved to see how these animals found ways to live in harmony together and how so many worked to help one another in so many ways. The book was an inspirational read and definitely one that I would recommend to all!

Franken Sci High – Fun for All Ages #Giveaway

December 8, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Franken Sci High

In the first book, What’s the Matter with Newton?, Newton Warp is a mystery, even to himself: He wakes up one day in the library with no idea of who he is, how he got there, or where he came from. Newton is quickly assigned to a dorm and makes a friend: Shelly Ravenholt, who creates living, breathing monsters for fun. He’s eager to find out who his family is, but this is high school after all, and he soon has other problems: Newton has to create a last-minute project for the Mad Science Fair and Shelly’s friend Theremin (a robot) is really jealous of him. And that’s not all: the other students at Franken-Sci High soon realize that Newton has a few useful, but surprising quirks. Wherever Newton came from, they start to suspect that he’s not entirely human!

Franken Sci High

In the second book, Monsters Among Us, Newton Warp’s friends notice he’s being followed around by a strange new professor, Dr. Flubitus, but have no idea why. Newton wonders if it has something to do with the barcode on his foot. He doesn’t have much time to dwell on it, though, because soon there are reports of a giant monster loose on campus! Shelly assumes a school for mad scientists would have top-notch security against monsters, nosy tourists, and other invaders, but soon she and her friends Newton and Theremin discover a gaping loophole in the system. If a marauding monster can find its way to the school’s secret location in the Bermuda Triangle and figure out how to open a portal to the campus, anyone else could get in, too! Then Shelly finds out she might be the reason the monster is there in the first place

Franken Sci High

My Take on the Books

This is a great book that is full of adventures for Newton and his friends. Newton and his friends are a great group of kids and kids and parents alike will love these books not only for the adventure that you get, but also for the bizarre, funny, clever plot that is what you find in both of these books.

The Franken-Sci High series is truly a fun romp of science, monsters and so much more. If you love robots and portals and brains floating in jars you have good taste, and your kid probably does too!

Movie Review – PBS Masterpiece Little Women

May 10, 2018 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

PBS Masterpiece Little Women

About Little Women

“MASTERPIECE: LITTLE WOMEN” will be available on DVD and Blu-ray May 22, 2018. The run time of the program is approximately 180 minutes.  The DVD SRP is $24.99 and the Blu-ray SRP is $34.99. The program will also be available for digital download.

“Little Women is one of the most-loved novels in the English language, and with good reason,” says writer and executive producer Heidi Thomas. “Its humanity, humor, and tenderness never date, and as a study of love, grief, and growing up it has no equal. There could be no better time to revisit the story of a family striving for happiness in an uncertain world.”

Heading the cast are Academy Award® nominee Emily Watson (The Theory of Everything, Hilary and Jackie) as Marmee, the devoted mother of the four adolescent March girls; Michael Gambon (Churchill’s Secret, Page Eight) as Mr. Laurence; and Academy Award® winner Angela Lansbury (Murder, She Wrote, The Manchurian Candidate) as the March family matriarch, Aunt March.

The March sisters—the “little women” of the title—feature newcomer Maya Hawke as the willful and adventurous Jo; Willa Fitzgerald (Scream: The TV Series) as the eldest and most virtuous, Meg; Annes Elwy (King Arthur: Excalibur Rising) as the shy sister, Beth; and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) as Amy, the youngest of the family.

Also appearing are Jonah Hauer-King (Howards End) as Laurie, the loveable boy next door; Dylan Baker (The Good Wife) as Mr. March, who is serving as a chaplain with the Union Army; Julian Morris (Mark Felt) as John Brooke, Laurie’s cultured and handsome tutor; and Mark Stanley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) as the charming Professor Bhaer.

A celebration of family as much as it is a recognition of the challenges of growing up and forging an individual identity, the program remains relevant due to the universal themes at its core. Backed by a nearly all-female creative team, Thomas’ adaptation doesn’t shy away from tackling the darker, more complex emotions the March family experiences. Drawing from a novel that was well ahead of its time the show speaks to current issues as much as it does to the issues women faced at the turn of the 20th century.

Devotees of the original novel will relish the book’s indelible scenes in this MASTERPIECE production: the cruel fate of Jo’s manuscript, Amy’s accident on the ice, Meg’s first ball, Beth and the forbidden piano, the pickled limes affair, and many other cherished episodes in a journey to a bygone time.

Although modern society would be disorienting in the extreme to the March sisters, Thomas notes that even today “girls are still confused about their desires and their desirability, and the passage from innocence to experience is more turbulent than ever.”

“We need hope, and we need empathy,” she adds. “We need laughter, and we need catharsis, we need joy and inspiration. LITTLE WOMEN gives us all of these things.”

“MASTERPIECE: LITTLE WOMEN” has been commissioned by Piers Wenger and Charlotte Moore at the BBC, and is produced by Playground (Wolf Hall, Howards End) for BBC One. The series is a co-production with MASTERPIECE on PBS. The producer is Susie Liggat. Executive producers are Colin Callender and Sophie Gardiner for Playground, Heidi Thomas, Lucy Richer for the BBC and Rebecca Eaton for MASTERPIECE.

My Take on the Movie

As a father of two girls I have wanted my girls to read this book soon and when I saw that the PBS Masterpiece: Little Women series was coming to DVD I was excitedespecially when I asw the cast. I have seen other versions in the past and some have been great and some not so great so I did not know what to expect in this one.

While watching this with my daughters I can honestly say that this series was definitely a great one. The series covers both the Little Women and Good Wives books and follows the four March Sisters through their childhood and adult lives. The series covers so many things in the lives of these women, both the high and low points and even touches on important moments in American history as well.

In my opinion, the series portrays the sisters well and they found perfect actresses to play them too.  The series also shares some of the hardships that the family and the women feel throughout their lives and the actresses do a superb job at sharing the emotion of the scene in the perfect fashion.

What was great was that not only do you get some known actresses like Emily Watson as Marmee and Angela Lansbury as Aunt Josephine, but you also get a number of newer actresses that you may not know yet.

I was particularly taken by the acting of Maya Hawke who plays Jo. Maya does a remarkable job at capturing Jo’s tomboy nature without going over the top. She shows a wide array of emotions in her character which draws the viewer even closer into the film and she does all of this without overplaying the mannerisms that you would expect Jo to embody!

There is still love shown in many ways in the relationships that the women have with others and these relationships are also built well and the love that is shown is tangible.

In the end this adaptation of the text did a wonderful job at maintaining the overall feel of the text and also adding in some of the new nuances that make the viewer connect to the story as well. I have to commend the BBC and the cast for a wonderful job and I highly encourage all to enjoy this great film with your own!
Finally, what makes this version of “Little Women” special is that it’s not afraid to occasionally expand on the material – and unlike “Anne with an E”, it does so in a way that’s faithful to the spirit of the original story. For instance, there’s a beautiful moment on Meg’s wedding day in which Marmee goes into the room where all her daughters are preparing, and for a moment she’s struck dumb as they turn and smile at her. She wishes them well, leaves the room, and then stops to let herself have a little cry in the hallway, knowing it’s the last time she’ll have them all under her own roof. It’s just lovely in its poignancy.

So well done, BBC. With high production values, excellent casting, deft directing, and a full understanding of the classic story and its characters, you’ve made a worthy adaptation of “Little Women”.

Dads in the Limelight – Colin Gray of The Podcast Host podcast

October 27, 2016 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Dads in the Limelight Series

Our 714th Dad in the Limelight is Colin Gray, Managing Director of The Podcast Host Podcast. I want to thank Colin Gray for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing Colin Gray with all of you.

Colin Gray is the 714th Dad being spotlighted in the Dads in the Limelight series on the Dad of Divas Blog
1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)
My name is Colin Gray and I’m a mid-30s guy from Dundee in Scotland who’s run a few businesses over the years, mainly as an excuse to avoid ever having a real job. These days my work passion is Podcasting. My company helps anyone or any business to create their own show, and to grow a legion of loyal fans based around their knowledge and experience. I run a few podcasts of my own, and I do a fair bit of public speaking on the subject. Other than that, I’m really interested in the startup world, and the whole subject of starting and running a sustainable, successful and ethical business.
Colin Gray is the 714th Dad being spotlighted in the Dads in the Limelight series on the Dad of Divas Blog
2) Tell me about your family
I have a brilliant wife and two little menaces…eh, I mean kids. My wife’s a doctor and we met right around when I turned 30 and were both living in Edinburgh. A few years later we had our son, who’s now 4, and then came our daughter, who’s now 2. Al is great fun now, starting to get into games and sports and all the fun things. And Dee is a wee radge who tyrannises the rest of the family, getting her own way at least 95% of the time.
Colin Gray is the 714th Dad being spotlighted in the Dads in the Limelight series on the Dad of Divas Blog
3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?
Dealing with losing a whole lot of my own time. I’ve always been a guy that enjoys his own company and spends them on too many hobbies. Sometimes I grudge the fact that I can’t go out biking whenever I want, or go off and play cards with a few friends. In the early days I struggled because young babies don’t necessarily give a whole lot back, and I would feel like I was just passing the time when with them. It still challenges me, but I’m figuring it out – see below!
Colin Gray is the 714th Dad being spotlighted in the Dads in the Limelight series on the Dad of Divas Blog
4) What advice would you give to other fathers?
If you’re not a ‘baby guy’ it’s fine. I’m not. I would step in front of a bullet for my kids when they were babies, of course, but I have to admit, I found the first year more boring than exciting, as I mentioned above. When personlity comes, though, it all changes. You can start to get something back, to teach, to play. Nowadays, I find ways to make time with them ‘my time’ even if it’s doing something I wouldn’t exactly choose to do on my own! I love teaching them new things, so that’s always a great one, and I’m a geek so finding games to play with them is brilliant too. Even if it’s just helping my daughter to arrange her little toy kitchen, I’ll do silly things like do my stretches at the same time. I can sit in a squat and help Dee put her dollies to bed at the same time no bother!
Colin Gray is the 714th Dad being spotlighted in the Dads in the Limelight series on the Dad of Divas Blog
5) How have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?
My wife and I have come to realise that scheduled time might seem like the most boring and anal thing ever, but that it’s just essential when you have kids. We try to share the mornings out for time by ourselves. Eg. I’ll have Saturday until midday to do whatever I want, and she’ll have Sunday till midday. So, if I get up early, I can get out on the bike for a few hours, easy. That’s great. Evenings, too. We try to organise games nights during the week, or a regular evening with friends. When we first talked about it, it made me feel like I was turning into an accountant for our time – I grudged the discipline – but I love that quote: “Through discipline comes freedom.”
Colin Gray is the 714th Dad being spotlighted in the Dads in the Limelight series on the Dad of Divas Blog
6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?
One of the best lessons I got, ever, went like this: “Just remember, no matter what they’re doing, what you’re going through, it’s only a phase!” When times are bad – they’re up 3 times in the night, they’re not going to the toilet – it’s a phase. It’ll end. And when times are good – they’re nice, they’re behaved, they’re loving you – it’s a phase. It’ll end. So appreciate it while it lasts!
Colin Gray is the 714th Dad being spotlighted in the Dads in the Limelight series on the Dad of Divas Blog
7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?
Don’t get pressured into doing things too early. Toilet training was a good example for us. All our pals were starting to toilet train their kids around 2 years old. And they were having a nightmare. Cleaning up all over the place. We waited. We thought, where’s the rush? Coming on for 2 and a half, we tried Al once, over a couple of days, and he didn’t get it. So we put the nappies back on. Maybe 6 months later, probably a little older than 3, we tried again. And he just got it, right away. He could talk reasonably well by then, so we could explain it! We get pressured into doing things by the ‘milestones’ forgetting that they’re all ready at different times. You’ll make your life so much easier just waiting until they’re ready and ignoring the ‘type A’ parents who’re competing on everything.
Colin Gray is the 714th Dad being spotlighted in the Dads in the Limelight series on the Dad of Divas Blog
8) What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?
The most memorable thing for me, so far, was a moment probably 6 months ago or so when our two kids suddenly seemed to discover that it was possible to like each other. Up until then they were just like two beings coexisting, tolerating each other’s presence and living life separately. Now, we walk by a room and see them with their heads together playing with a toy and chattering away about it. It’s amazing – shows you that they’re these independent little things that can have relationships of their own outside of you. That’s brilliant, a proud moment, but also quite sad and terrifying. It makes me appreciate time with them right now a little more, because I’m suddenly aware that I and my wife wont be the whole world to them for much longer…..

If you have any questions for Colin Gray, please leave a comment here and I will make sure that he gets them so that he may be able to respond!

Also, do you know a Dad in the Limelight? If so, please email me their contact information so that they too can be a part of this series!

Footloose by Kenny Loggins

 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

About the Book

It’s time to cut loose with Footloose! Time to cut loose! Have a rockin’ time introducing children to the fun of Footloose, rewritten for children by the one and only Kenny Loggins. As a zookeeper named Jack joins the zoo animals in an all-night dance party, this new original story from Loggins is sure to get your feet moving. Little ones will love the cast of characters, including the rockin’ chimp Louise (“Geez, Louise”), Mister DJ Elephant, the lemur Marie (“Oo Wee, Marie”), Milo the wombat, Luke the funkiest cat in the zoo, and so many more rocking, bopping, boogeying, tangoing, shaking, rattling and rolling animals!

Footloose by Kenny Loggins

To add to the fun, the book includes a CD with new recordings by Kenny Loggins. Kids and parents can sing along to the classic hit with new lyrics, as well as a three-song medley families will love.

My Take on the Book

This was a great book that reconceptualizes the song Footloose by Kenny Loggins into a book made for young kids to enjoy. I loved the story behind this book and the relevance to Kenny Loggins’ own granddaughter. This is a great book that really captures the essence of the book and song! About the Book

In Fancy Nancy Tea Parties, Fancy Nancy, hostess extraordinaire, can’t wait to share her party-planning expertise with your little one! From recipes and crafts to etiquette tips and French lessons, this precious personalized book contains everything your child needs to throw the perfect tea party. A personalized letter from Nancy herself to your fancy kiddo? Oui! Plus, your child’s name is worked into the text and adorable illustrations throughout the book. Wrap up with a set of recipe cards from the Kitchen of Fancy Nancy, and best of all, cut out and frame the certificate declaring your child a graduate of Fancy Nancy’s Tea Party Course! Que magnifique!

My Take on the Book

It is so nice to be able to have a book with a character that my daughter loves that is personalized directly to her. The Put Me In The Story books allow you to do this and on top of getting an amazing book, you also get the opportunity to create something that your child will not only want to read over and over again, but also a book that you can truly make unique with words that you write yourself! I am very impressed by the quality of the book and there are so many other books that are also available for people of all ages. I know that I will be coming back to this again in the near future as this not only continues to promote reading but also provides me a great way to make a gift that I could create for anyone!
