Franken Sci High – Fun for All Ages #Giveaway

December 8, 2019 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

Franken Sci High

In the first book, What’s the Matter with Newton?, Newton Warp is a mystery, even to himself: He wakes up one day in the library with no idea of who he is, how he got there, or where he came from. Newton is quickly assigned to a dorm and makes a friend: Shelly Ravenholt, who creates living, breathing monsters for fun. He’s eager to find out who his family is, but this is high school after all, and he soon has other problems: Newton has to create a last-minute project for the Mad Science Fair and Shelly’s friend Theremin (a robot) is really jealous of him. And that’s not all: the other students at Franken-Sci High soon realize that Newton has a few useful, but surprising quirks. Wherever Newton came from, they start to suspect that he’s not entirely human!

Franken Sci High

In the second book, Monsters Among Us, Newton Warp’s friends notice he’s being followed around by a strange new professor, Dr. Flubitus, but have no idea why. Newton wonders if it has something to do with the barcode on his foot. He doesn’t have much time to dwell on it, though, because soon there are reports of a giant monster loose on campus! Shelly assumes a school for mad scientists would have top-notch security against monsters, nosy tourists, and other invaders, but soon she and her friends Newton and Theremin discover a gaping loophole in the system. If a marauding monster can find its way to the school’s secret location in the Bermuda Triangle and figure out how to open a portal to the campus, anyone else could get in, too! Then Shelly finds out she might be the reason the monster is there in the first place

Franken Sci High

My Take on the Books

This is a great book that is full of adventures for Newton and his friends. Newton and his friends are a great group of kids and kids and parents alike will love these books not only for the adventure that you get, but also for the bizarre, funny, clever plot that is what you find in both of these books.

The Franken-Sci High series is truly a fun romp of science, monsters and so much more. If you love robots and portals and brains floating in jars you have good taste, and your kid probably does too!

Movie Review – PBS Masterpiece Little Women

May 10, 2018 by dadofdivas Leave a Comment

PBS Masterpiece Little Women

About Little Women

“MASTERPIECE: LITTLE WOMEN” will be available on DVD and Blu-ray May 22, 2018. The run time of the program is approximately 180 minutes.  The DVD SRP is $24.99 and the Blu-ray SRP is $34.99. The program will also be available for digital download.

“Little Women is one of the most-loved novels in the English language, and with good reason,” says writer and executive producer Heidi Thomas. “Its humanity, humor, and tenderness never date, and as a study of love, grief, and growing up it has no equal. There could be no better time to revisit the story of a family striving for happiness in an uncertain world.”

Heading the cast are Academy Award® nominee Emily Watson (The Theory of Everything, Hilary and Jackie) as Marmee, the devoted mother of the four adolescent March girls; Michael Gambon (Churchill’s Secret, Page Eight) as Mr. Laurence; and Academy Award® winner Angela Lansbury (Murder, She Wrote, The Manchurian Candidate) as the March family matriarch, Aunt March.

The March sisters—the “little women” of the title—feature newcomer Maya Hawke as the willful and adventurous Jo; Willa Fitzgerald (Scream: The TV Series) as the eldest and most virtuous, Meg; Annes Elwy (King Arthur: Excalibur Rising) as the shy sister, Beth; and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) as Amy, the youngest of the family.

Also appearing are Jonah Hauer-King (Howards End) as Laurie, the loveable boy next door; Dylan Baker (The Good Wife) as Mr. March, who is serving as a chaplain with the Union Army; Julian Morris (Mark Felt) as John Brooke, Laurie’s cultured and handsome tutor; and Mark Stanley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) as the charming Professor Bhaer.

A celebration of family as much as it is a recognition of the challenges of growing up and forging an individual identity, the program remains relevant due to the universal themes at its core. Backed by a nearly all-female creative team, Thomas’ adaptation doesn’t shy away from tackling the darker, more complex emotions the March family experiences. Drawing from a novel that was well ahead of its time the show speaks to current issues as much as it does to the issues women faced at the turn of the 20th century.

Devotees of the original novel will relish the book’s indelible scenes in this MASTERPIECE production: the cruel fate of Jo’s manuscript, Amy’s accident on the ice, Meg’s first ball, Beth and the forbidden piano, the pickled limes affair, and many other cherished episodes in a journey to a bygone time.

Although modern society would be disorienting in the extreme to the March sisters, Thomas notes that even today “girls are still confused about their desires and their desirability, and the passage from innocence to experience is more turbulent than ever.”

“We need hope, and we need empathy,” she adds. “We need laughter, and we need catharsis, we need joy and inspiration. LITTLE WOMEN gives us all of these things.”

“MASTERPIECE: LITTLE WOMEN” has been commissioned by Piers Wenger and Charlotte Moore at the BBC, and is produced by Playground (Wolf Hall, Howards End) for BBC One. The series is a co-production with MASTERPIECE on PBS. The producer is Susie Liggat. Executive producers are Colin Callender and Sophie Gardiner for Playground, Heidi Thomas, Lucy Richer for the BBC and Rebecca Eaton for MASTERPIECE.

My Take on the Movie

As a father of two girls I have wanted my girls to read this book soon and when I saw that the PBS Masterpiece: Little Women series was coming to DVD I was excitedespecially when I asw the cast. I have seen other versions in the past and some have been great and some not so great so I did not know what to expect in this one.

While watching this with my daughters I can honestly say that this series was definitely a great one. The series covers both the Little Women and Good Wives books and follows the four March Sisters through their childhood and adult lives. The series covers so many things in the lives of these women, both the high and low points and even touches on important moments in American history as well.

In my opinion, the series portrays the sisters well and they found perfect actresses to play them too.  The series also shares some of the hardships that the family and the women feel throughout their lives and the actresses do a superb job at sharing the emotion of the scene in the perfect fashion.

What was great was that not only do you get some known actresses like Emily Watson as Marmee and Angela Lansbury as Aunt Josephine, but you also get a number of newer actresses that you may not know yet.

I was particularly taken by the acting of Maya Hawke who plays Jo. Maya does a remarkable job at capturing Jo’s tomboy nature without going over the top. She shows a wide array of emotions in her character which draws the viewer even closer into the film and she does all of this without overplaying the mannerisms that you would expect Jo to embody!

There is still love shown in many ways in the relationships that the women have with others and these relationships are also built well and the love that is shown is tangible.

In the end this adaptation of the text did a wonderful job at maintaining the overall feel of the text and also adding in some of the new nuances that make the viewer connect to the story as well. I have to commend the BBC and the cast for a wonderful job and I highly encourage all to enjoy this great film with your own!
Finally, what makes this version of “Little Women” special is that it’s not afraid to occasionally expand on the material – and unlike “Anne with an E”, it does so in a way that’s faithful to the spirit of the original story. For instance, there’s a beautiful moment on Meg’s wedding day in which Marmee goes into the room where all her daughters are preparing, and for a moment she’s struck dumb as they turn and smile at her. She wishes them well, leaves the room, and then stops to let herself have a little cry in the hallway, knowing it’s the last time she’ll have them all under her own roof. It’s just lovely in its poignancy.

So well done, BBC. With high production values, excellent casting, deft directing, and a full understanding of the classic story and its characters, you’ve made a worthy adaptation of “Little Women”.

Come With Me Book #Giveaway

July 2, 2017 by dadofdivas 7 Comments

Come With Me

 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

About the Book

Sixteen years ago, after the attacks on September 11, Holly McGhee felt the fear and wariness of going about her work and life in New York City normally. She drew strength and comfort from an illustration sent by her friend Pascal Lemaître, an artist living in Brussels. Then in 2016, Pascal’s city experienced its own terrorist attack. In the aftermath, Holly and Pascal decided they would spread the message of perseverance and optimism, and together they created COME WITH ME (Putnam; On sale: September 5, 2017; $17.99).

In tender-hearted illustrations and sincere text, Holly and Pascal’s picture book COME WITH ME answers the question asked by everyone, big and small, in the current tumultuous climate: how do we go on after a tragedy?

After being frightened by the anger and hatred told on the news, a little girl asks her papa if there is something she can do to make the world a better place. “Come with me,” he says, and they walk hand-in-hand, tipping their hats to those they pass. The illustrations show people from all walks of life, their expressions timid or wary—but the girl and her papa smile, and soon someone else is, too. That day, they do not lose to fear.

The next day, the news continues to spread its unhappy message, and the little girl asks her mama what can be done. “Come with me,” she says, and together they go to a grocery, where they meet and speak to people from all different cultures. That day, they learn that there are many different ways to be part of a community.

At home again, things are the same as usual: the table is set, the family eats dinner, the news spouts word of terror and fear. After dinner that night, the little girl asks if she can do something of her own—walk the dog—and her parents let her go. “Come with me,” she tells the boy across the hall, because “two people together are stronger than one.” Walking one step at a time, they begin to see that, as small as their part may seem, being brave, gentle, and kind does matter to the world.

Honest and accessible, COME WITH ME is a way for parents to talk to their children in the aftermath of tragedy. But COME WITH ME is also a reminder for humans of all ages, who have ever felt powerless, that the strongest response to fear is to remain kind and hopeful.

My Take on the Book
This was a wonderful book that really allows you to see the world in a new way. I loved the message and showing you that every person can make a difference in the world. I loved to see how engaged the girls and her loved ones were and the conversations that that have about making a different. Then, it was so special to see the girl passing on what she learned to another at the end too.

A Hundred Thousand Worlds Book #Giveaway

June 12, 2017 by dadofdivas 4 Comments

A Hundred Thousand Worlds
 photo disclaimer_zpsaa1cb05b.jpg

About the Book

A Hundred Thousand Worlds combines a delightfully geeky setting with an emotionally rich story, this literary-meets-genre pleasure will have you laughing, moved to tears and completely absorbed in now-mainstream comic book culture of the world of the cons.

For Valerie Torrey—an actress who left her hit sci-fi TV show and co-star husband six years earlier after tragedy struck—her appearances at the cons mark an uncomfortable return to the character and life she fled.  For nine-year-old Alex, the conventions are a world where the fantastic brushes up against the real.  Wandering aisles filled with superheroes, robots, time travelers and monsters, Alex and Val are drawn into the orbit of comic-con regulars from illustrators and writers to a group of spandex-clad cosplay women who offer a chorus of knowing commentary. Alex knows that he will be reunited with his estranged father in LA but as they draw closer to their destination, he realizes that the story his mother is telling him about their journey might have a very different ending than he imagined.

A HUNDRED THOUSAND WORLDS is a book about fandom and creativity, but more importantly, it is about the fierce and complicated love between a mother and son, and how the stories we tell each other come to shape us, even as we shape them.

Bob Proehl.Credit Heather Ainsworth

An Interview with the Author

Q: Your novel A HUNDRED THOUSAND WORLDS follows several characters across the country attending a series of comic book conventions. When and why did you become a comic fan?

A: When Superman died. I was a big baseball card collector before that (which makes me sound a thousand years old), and there was all this hype about how much the issue where Supes died was going to be worth. But by the time I got my dad to take me to the comic book store, the first print was sold out and I was stuck with l think a fourth printing. Since it wasn’t worth anything, I figured I might as well read it. Not only did Supes die, but it set up a whole other story that would continue the next week.

It was the serial nature of it that pulled me in at first, and the epic scope. These huge stories that would go on and on, week after week. We lived in the suburbs, so I would either bike into Buffalo on the weekends, or give my dad a list on Wednesday to pick up on his way home from work. It was the ritual of it too. Growing up in the suburbs, you need ways to mark time. Wednesdays were new comics days. They still are.

Q: What inspired you to write about the relationship between a mother and son?

A: The setting for this book grew out of my own interests, but the story grew out of having a kid in my life. I was a new stepdad to a (then) eight year old when I sketched out the initial the idea for the book. At that time, the friendship between Brett and Alex was going to be more central and the relationship between Val and Alex was secondary and drew a lot on my wife and my stepson. But this book got put on the backburner for a while, and by the time I got down to writing it, my relationship with my stepson had changed pretty drastically. I was reckoning with what it meant to be a parent, and figuring out the kind of parent I wanted to be. So in addition to a sort of closely observed relationship, the dynamics between Val and Alex started to include my thoughts and anxieties about raising a kid. About how you function as an adult with drives and desires, and also as a parent, and the way those two things are constantly pulling at one another. Parent-child love is such a sanctified thing, it becomes tough to talk about in any complicated way, and I really wanted to explore all the currents that move back and forth within that bond, that trouble it and ultimately strengthen it.

Q: Superhero characters are a massive cultural commodity, are more people reading comics thanks to big box office releases? If no, is there anything cultural fans of these characters could benefit from by reading the comic books?

A: I don’t think there’s as much crossover as there could be from superheroes in the movies and on TV to reading comics. It can be daunting to get started on reading superhero comics, not to mention confusing. In comics, as I’m writing this, Bruce Wayne isn’t Batman, Superman can’t fly, Thor is a woman, and Supergirl doesn’t even have a monthly comic book. So in the rare instance someone might walk out of the movie theater and into their local comic book shop, you might not see anything that matches what you saw on screen. Not to mention the fact that comics have a visual and formal language all their own that can be somewhat opaque on a first reading.

But there are so many good places to start, whether it’s with superhero comics from the Big Two, or the amazing depth and breadth of creator-owned stuff that’s out there right now, or manga, which I don’t really know the first thing about but a lot of it looks super cool. And in a weird way, the fact that the economic stakes of comics are lower means that the creative stakes can be much higher. The sheer level of imagination in comic books is pretty staggering. Finding an “in”, or finding the right book for you, can be tough, but a good bookseller, or comic book store employee, or geeky friend, should be able to listen to what you’re interested in and point you towards something you’ll adore. Or, seriously, ask me. I have loads of opinions. Loads.

The Bourne Initiative #Giveaway

June 12, 2017 by dadofdivas 8 Comments

The Bourne Initiative

I partnered with Grand Central Publishing to share this giveaway.

About the Book

In The Bourne Initiative Jason Bourne—the rogue secret agent who has lost his memory—returns in this stunning new thriller from Eric Van Lustbader, continuing Robert Ludlum’s classic series.

Gen. Boris Karpov, head of the feared Russian FSB, is dead. But Karpov has reached out from the grave with an unstoppable cyber operation he conceived in the months before his murder, aimed at the heart of the United States—a way to steal the president’s nuclear launch codes. Who has taken over the operation? Karpov trusted only one man: Jason Bourne. But can Bourne be working against his own country? Gen. Arthur MacQuerrie, chief of the Dreadnaught Section of NSA and Morgana Broussard, head of the mysterious Meme, LLC, are convinced of Bourne’s treasonous act, and will do everything in their power to kill him.

Flushed from cover, hunted by the best assassins in the business, wounded and nearly killed, Bourne’s only hope is to join forces with his bitterest enemy, a Somali magus named Keyre, whose terrorist forces Bourne once decimated. Now Keyre is more powerful than ever, with a burgeoning international network—a man who can help Bourne, but to what end? Lying in wait is the young woman Bourne saved from Keyre’s torture, who now calls herself the Angelmaker. Both seductive and deadly, the Angelmaker loves Bourne, watches over him, but from whom does she take her orders? Is she ally or adversary?

These are questions Bourne must answer before he can unravel the mystery of Boris Karpov’s last legacy, a weaponized code that may very well bring about the unthinkable: a violent end to America.

My Take on the Book

I have loved reading the Jason Bourne books in the past and The Bourne Initiative continues the action and re-kindles my love of the series itself. The book moves quickly and every page really encouraged me to move forward and read another chapter. You get to see Jason Bourne in a new way than how I had seen him in the past. The book has a ton of twists and turns and even the end has a great twist that threw me a bit. The book was a great book that left me on the edge of my seat.

About the Series

Jason Bourne is one of the most popular and compelling characters in contemporary fiction. Originally created by bestselling author Robert Ludlum, the Jason Bourne series was later adapted into films that have become modern classics. Now, New York Times bestselling writer Eric Van Lustbader carries on Jason Bourne’s story with a new novel about the rogue secret agent who has lost his memory…

Sci Fi Junior High

About the Book

Sci-Fi Junior High is James Patterson’s new children’s imprint, and is a gleefully illustrated space adventure that offers a laugh on every page. That’s a lot of laughs!

In Sci-Fi Junior High, Kelvin Klosmo isn’t just the new kid at school – he’s the new kid in the galaxy! Welcome to Sci-Fi Junior High: an inter-galactic space station with students of all shapes, sizes, smells, and… slime content. As the son of Earth’s two most famous geniuses, Kelvin isn’t just the smartest kid in the world….he’s the smartest kid in the UNIVERSE. At least, that’s what everybody at Sci-Fi Junior High thinks.
So, maybe Kelvin lied a little about being a genius to fit in. And maybe a mad scientist is about to take over the universe unless Kelvin can stop him. Maybe everyone is doomed.
Well, at least Kelvin won’t have to worry about math homework anymore.
Sci-Fi Junior High is an out-of-this-world story about friendship, accepting our differences, and the fight against evil… bunnies. Yes, evil bunnies – don’t ask.
