This summer we took our family back up to the same cottage that we rented last summer. It was on a small inland lake in northern Michigan and about 20 minutes East of Gaylord. We all were really excited about going back to this cottage as we had a blast last summer and we anticipated that we would have a similar great time.

One of the best experiences that I will treasure form this trip were the early morning canoe trips that my eldest daughter and I went on. It was time that she and I could share together. Silence surrounded the lake and no others were on the placid surface, it was perfect. We loved watching the sun rise over the lake, and finding small inlets that we could explore, and in the canoe we could do just that!

Outside of this we also had some fun on a pontoon boat too, as one of our longtime friends had one of these. It was a ton of fun to get out on the lake while there were others there too, and even let my oldest get out on an innertube and get pulled behind the boat. My daughters had never been on one of these boats and they had a blast. I will be honest and say that Diva-J, my oldest, thought that we should next try out one of the speedboats that were seeing on the lake, especially giving her a chance to waterski, but as I told her, one step at a time!

If you have not yet had your own boating experience this summer, there is still time as we still have a good month of summer left before many schools start again!

I have found that DiscoverBoating.com has great resources and educational tools for boaters of all levels! Especially if you haven’t had a chance to get your feet wet this summer, I hope these links spur some ideas and waken your inner boater.

A Boat, A Lake, What’s Better? #DiscoverBoating

A speed boat in the Milwaukee harbor

I participated in an Ambassador Program on behalf of Dad Central for Discover Boating. I received a promotional item to thank me for my participation.

I am an Ambassador for Discover Boating! Summer is here and that means it’s time to get the whole family excited about getting on the water and for me that means in any type of boat I can!

I remember growing up that during my summers in Michigan I was always the most excited when I could go to friends’ homes that had boats. Whether it was taking out a paddle boat or going out on a pontoon, it always brought a smile on my face and lifted my spirits. On top of this, I was always a bit adventurous as a child (and still am today), so when I had the opportunity to try out my skills on waterskies or bouncing across the waves on a tube or even trying a wave runner for the first time (talk about thrilling) I was always one of the first to jump into these opportunities.

The other boating memory that I have is spending time with my own father as well as my cousins on the boat fishing together. Taking a boat out on the water especially early in the morning is somewhat transformative for anyone. Watching the sun rising over the water and simply exploring the silence on a lake is simply something that you cannot recreate, or at least is something that I have yet to be able to recreate in any other way. I had my first experience fishing early in the morning with my oldest daughter last year and it was so memorable. We snuck out of the house before anyone else woke up and it was a time when we could truly connect together (and she could not escape into her technology). I hated to finish the time as it was so meaningful. This summer we are going up to the same cottage and for us we are definitely planning on continuing this tradition and my daughter has already told me that we will be out on the water in the boat again, and of course that makes me smile just thinking about this.

I have never owned a boat because I don’t live that close to a lake, nor do I own a place on a lake (though maybe someday), but as you can see I love using them and I am not alone. In doing some research I found that Americans are taking to the water in record numbers: Of the 241.9 million adults in the US in 2013, 36.6%, or 88.5 million, participated in recreational boating at least once during 2013 – one of the highest percentages on record. I know that I for one love going and exploring boats though and am always impressed by all of the add-ons that you can have on boats today. I have even watched some of the reality boating shows showing some of the most luxurious boats out there and it is amazing for me to see these, even though I know I will never own one of these. That being said though, if I ever did live on a lake, I would definitely jump into boat ownership. In looking at the following DiscoverBoating.com – I found so many boats that were cost-effective and much less expensive than I originally thought.
