As a parent you are always looking for online communities that allow for kids to be able to not only learn, but also be able to connect with others in a safe atmosphere. Over the past month my daughters have been trying out the new National Geographic Animal Jam online community. What I found interesting was how each of my daughters interacted with the community. My eldest daughter loved the games and being able to build her animal’s den, as well as being able to adopt pets for her animal as well. My youngest conversely, loved interacting with the environment as well as moving around the worlds, finding animals hidden in each of the worlds.
The one thing that I have found in Animal Jam that I like as a parent is that there is a great balance of both education and entertainment. You can tell that much time was spent to make the environment interactive and fun, while still holding true to the ideals of National Geographic and what they try to encourage in everything that they share both in print and online.
My daughters loved the customization that was present from the very beginning when they were signing up to the ability to create and design their dens. It allowed them to be able to keep their experience different from each other, but also allowed them to have fun and have come common experiences too.
All-in-all I was really impressed with Animal Jam and think that you and your kids will too. Just remember to encourage your kids to explore, click and check out everything in the Animal Jam world!
About Animal Jam
Animal Jam is a safe and exciting online playground for kids who love animals and the outdoors. Players create and customize their own animal characters and dens, chat with friends, adopt pets, team up for adventures, and feed their curiosity about animals and the natural world around them. Created in partnership with National Geographic, Animal Jam features classic playground role playing infused with the life sciences. Players can collect fun facts in their journey books, learn about Animal Conservation in Kimbara Outback, and talk to real scientists, like herpetologist Dr. Brady Barr and marine biologist Tierney Thys. All educational content is accessible to players for free, including Animal Jam Academy (http://academy.animaljam.com) – a premier online resource center where kids can download exciting activities to complete when they’re not online. Animal Jam memberships are available for players who want access to additional animals, accessories, dens, and den items. Membership details are located here: https://animaljam.com/membership We also offer robust safety options which are constantly being optimized based on parent feedback. Parents can control their child’s chat settings, plus their ability to gift or trade items. Parents can also view their child’s discipline history and their login history. Animal Jam also regularly produces educational content for players and their parents about digital citizenship and online safety, ensuring our players are aware of how to be safe online. Our goal is to inspire children to explore and protect the natural world outside their own doors, making science accessible and fun!
