Education of a WASP @Rotary #Literacy #Giveaway #RotaryReads

September 12, 2012 by dadofdivas 5 Comments

With summer winding down and many youngsters heading back to school, Rotary International is ramping up its commitment to improve literacy and basic education for children and adults.

Why Literacy & Rotary are Important

This may seem like a no-brainer, but literacy is what makes the world go around and the more people that are able to read and to share that gift with others, the more that we all can accomplish as a society. As a parent, and a past Rotary member, I have seen first-hand how much the gift of literacy can open up the world to a child. I have continuously been amazed at how picking up a book can transport a person to another land, or open their minds to a new idea or perspective which is definitely something that we all need to do now and again. Rotary has made it one if it’s guiding principles to work with all to promote literacy as they have seen how this goes hand-in-hand with economic prosperity for a person and for a country.

Check out some great examples of local Rotary Clubs’ work for this cause in Washington, Minnesota & Maine

  • Fife-Milton Rotary (Club # 64) is entering its 4th year of sponsoring Catherine Nankunda’s education in Mbarara, Uganda.  She is a 9 year old Uganda girl attending St Aloysius Primary school there.  Fife-Milton Rotary’s donation covers her tuition, books, room, board, uniform, bedding, stationary, etc.  She is in the 5th grade & the club receives progress reports each quarter.  Here’s the link to the club’s website with photos of her & the school’s Head Mistress. https://sites.google.com/site/fifemiltonrotary/home

Tweet-Chat with Rotary: Rotary International will be hosting a Twitter Chat on 9/13 from 8pm-9pm EST with blogger, No Time for Flash Cards (@NoFlashCards), to continue the conversation about improving literacy and promoting basic education worldwide. We would love for you and your readers to join us and tweet your favorite quote from your favorite book using #RotaryReads

Rotary has been great and is allowing me to offer the one book that most impacted my life to one of you, my readers. The below book was one that I was introduced to back when I was studying my Masters Degree. This book blew the lid off my own perspective on White Privilege in society and the fact that so many white individuals live with a sense of inert racism that they are not aware of. This book was one of the best ethnographies that I had at the time ever read and this is a book that I continually share with others as one that will open their eyes no matter what their race and it will for you as well!

About the Book

Brimming with honestly and passion, The Education of a WASP chronicles one white woman’s discovery of racism in 1960s America. First published in 1970 and highly acclaimed by reviewers, Lois Stalvey’s account is as timely now as it was then. Nearly twenty years later, with ugly racial incidents occurring on college campuses, in neighborhoods, and in workplaces everywhere, her account of personal encounters with racism remains deeply disturbing. Educators and general readers interested in the subtleties of racism will find the story poignant, revealing, and profoundly moving.
