On December 2-4 I had the experience of a lifetime to travel to Los Angeles and experience the magic, wonder and mystery that surrounds Star Wars – The Last Jedi. The trip surrounded the December 3 Press Junket and brought forth a ton of excitement from all of the actors that were present, but also all of the people in the audience too.
After the press event we interviewed: Domhnall Gleeson (“General Hux”), Gwendoline Christie (“Captain Phasma”), Laura Dern (“Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo”), and Kelly Marie Tran (“Rose Tico”).

Laura Dern plays Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo and while we did get to interview her we did not get a lot out of her in regards to what will be happening in the film itself. Instead, she gave us basics about her character as she told us “I have purple hair” and also that she is strong without having to wear men’s clothes.

Laura Dern explained how amazing it was to work with Director Rian Johnson. She stated how “amazing it was to be in Rian’s head. It was incredible to collaborate on who she is in the film.”

From Laura’s explanation, she was a huge fan of Star Wars growing up and being asked to be a part of this film was an amazing opportunity. She had always been impressed by the “legacy of deepest storytelling that surrounded Star Wars and you feel this in every character in a profound and beautiful way.

Laura Dern explained that her parents were in the movie business growing up so she was raised to love character and cinema. She stated that her parents were excited that she was in Star Wars – The Last Jedi. Her mother loves that she has purple hair and her father remarked that he “didn;t know that you get jewelry and nail color in space.”

She, like a number of the women on the Star Wars – The Last Jedi panel reflected their admiration of Carrie Fisher. Laura Dern explained that Leia “was an inspiration for me as she embodied being fearless, vulnerable, bold, powerful and more and we don’t see this all the time.” She loves that girls now have characters like Rey and her character (and others) for which to find inspiration.

At the end of our interview with Laura Dern we had a group shot, the shot you saw at the top of this post. As we set up for this post, I was on one knee and Laura Dern walks up and says “I do”, laughed and I went along with it for a special moment between the two of us. This moment and others throughout the time together allowed us to see Laura Dern as a person and I will tell you, what we saw impressed us all!
