Our 302nd Dad in the Limelight is Henry Amador. I want to thank Henry for being a part of this series. It has been great getting connected with him and now sharing him with all of you.
1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)
Well, lets see… I am a Life Coach and a Daddy Blogger, My Blog: www.dadsquaredblog.blogspot.com was just recently named one of Babbles Top 50 Dad Blogs in the Country for 2012, That is something I am very proud of. I also run a very cool FaceBook community called DADsquared, https://www.facebook.com/pages/DADsquared/171102599661333 where many Gay Fathers like us can gather and share experiences and resources. My husband and I also made history by being the first same gendered couple to jointly adopt a child here in our county in Florida.
2) Tell me about your family
I am married to an amazing man named Joel, we were legally wed in MA in 2009 after being together 3 years.
We always dreamt of being parents so when the ban was lifted in Florida in 2010 we strongly pursued that dream.
We adopted our son Benjamin in January of 2012, and our world has never been the same!
3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?
The greatest challenge we faced was our legal system and the discrimination countless LGBT couples still face today.
We NEVER considered that we would not be parents, however jumping the hoops and hurdles placed before us was indeed daunting.
4) What advice would you give to other fathers?
I can’t begin to give another father advise, fatherhood is a very personal and individual road that is full of decisions that suddenly are being made for the love and well being of this new tiny miracle called your child.
I was raised by a very loving, smothering, old world Spanish mother.
The day I was born, her life took second place to mine, some might consider that unhealthy, unrealistic, I consider it the greatest gift I could have been given….. If there is any thing I would offer it would be to strive, above all things to put your child…above all things.
5) Seeing that you (or your position) are in the limelight, how have you come to balance parenthood and outside life? If you are currently not in the limelight per se, please still answer this in regards to how you balance parenthood and outside life.
Balance is extremely important to me.
Family first, all else in due time.
As a Spiritual Life Coach I must always take a few moments daily to meditate and stay centered.
My Blog and FB Community are acts of Love and Joy for me, I get one hundred times more in return than I put out.
They are my connection to something greater than me, every time I hear of a new baby joining one of my “Families” my heart skips a beat.
DADsquareds tag line and motto is “Changing the World one Family at a Time” and that’s exactly what we are doing….How amazing is that?!
6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?
Oh Lord, you must understand, the fathers I know are hero’s, they have climbed mountains and then moved them in order to create their families….I have personally witnessed miracles, great personal triumphs and devastating disappointments, all in the name of becoming fathers…..
How can I begin to tell you what I have learned from these men?
7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?
It is EVERYTHING I imagined!
8) What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?
Gosh, I have to say his very first moments, being there at his birth, hearing his first breath his first cry….
The old me died the day my son was born….replaced by the man I always prayed to be.
If you have any questions for Henry, please leave a comment here and I will make sure that he gets them so that he may be able to respond!
