Side By Side by Rachel Bright

About the Book
In Side By Side, A little mouse finds a best friend to stay by her side!

Deep in the heart of Wintermouse Wood,
Down in the grass where the autumn trees stood,
Lived all kinds of creatures — some big and some small —
Some spiky, some furry, some short, and some tall.

Follow one little mouseling and her search for a best friend to stay by her side in this joyful read-aloud bedtime book — the perfect celebration of friendship.

Rachel Bright’s sweet text and Debi Gliori’s heartwarming illustrations show the importance of friendship.

My Take on the Book

Your young child will thoroughly enjoy sharing this story with you. It is about finding friendship, just the right friend.  The main character is Little Mouseling. She is lonely and wants a friend. She  begins to search for one. Little Mouseling meets many different kinds of animals but none of them are the best fit for a friend. She finally finds a little black vole and they become best friends.
I liked this book so much. Children can relate to the story about finding a friend. Each child has their own interests and strengths and often locating another child who will complement the child has challenges.
This book shows there is a special friend out there. You may just need to search a while to find him or her.
The story has beautiful illustrations that show Little Mouseling’s feelings perfectly.

About the Book
In Audrey’s Tree House, Audrey is bigger than she was yesterday. Now she needs a bigger house. So she tells her dad to build her one.

Audrey is bigger than she was yesterday. Now she needs a bigger house. So she tells her dad to build her one.

At the top of a tree.

It is an ideal house. It has a bathtub for snorkeling, a place to drink tea, and somewhere to hide the dirty cups.

The house is perfect in every way.

Except for one thing …

This humorous story explores the clash between a quest for independence and the longing for security. Emerging author Jenny Hughes and acclaimed illustrator Jonathan Bentley have created a picture book with outstanding warmth, sensitivity, and insight.

My Take on the Book

This is a very heart warming story about a little girl and her dad. Audrey’s father understands her need for having a special place all her own. A place she can escape to, so he builds her an amazing tree house. Audrey is so excited and is ready to move in until she realizes she will miss her father. She wants the independence of her tree house, but the comfort and familiarity of her house with her father. It is a great story to show how growing up has its positive and possible negatives sides to the desire to become independent. Audrey and her father come to a wonderful agreement at the conclusion of the story which takes care of both of Audrey’s needs.

Twelve Minutes to Midnight by Christopher Edge

Twelve Minutes to Midnight
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
In Twelve Minutes to Midnight, Penelope Tredwell is the feisty thirteen-year-old orphan heiress of Victorian Britain’s bestselling magazine, the Penny Dreadful. Her spine-chilling tales–concealed under the pen name Montgomery Finch–are gripping the public. One day she receives a letter from the governor of the Bedlam madhouse requesting Finch’s help to investigate the asylum’s strange goings-on. Every night at precisely twelve minutes to midnight, the inmates all begin feverishly writing-incoherent ramblings that Penelope quickly realizes are frightening visions of the century to come. But what is causing this phenomenon? In the first book of this smart new series, Penelope is drawn into a thrilling mystery more terrifying than anything she could ever imagine!

My Take on the Book

Twelve Minutes to Midnight by Christopher Edge was an impressive read and was probably the first book by this author that I had ever read. While the book itself was geared toward middle school age readers, I still found it to be enjoyable and that there was plenty of action, mystery and intrigue to capture the attention of this age reader too. What I loved about this was the setting itself. The author, I felt, did a great job at creating the world around and inside of the Asylum. As a reader you get drawn in and you start to lose yourself in the story and the environment. Because of this, you will be kept engaged and wondering what will come next, or at least I did. In the end the author has set the stage well for a series and you will be surprised at where this book ends!

Shadows of the Silver Screen by Christopher Edge

Shadows of the Silver Screen
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
As the age of the silent film dawns, a mysterious filmmaker approaches the Penny Dreadful with a proposal to turn Montgomery Flinch’s sinister stories into motion pictures. With Monty starring in the production, filming begins but is plagued by a series of strange and frightening events. As Monty pleads with Penelope to help him, she is drawn into the mystery, but soon finds herself trapped in a nightmare penned by her own hand. Can Penelope uncover the filmmaker’s dark secret in time?

My Take on the Book

I had read one of the other books from the serious and past and truly enjoyed it. The author did a great job at setting the tone of the story and creating characters that were memorable. The story Itself was well-written though there were parts that I found to be a bit slow for my taste. The story did pick up though and the author leaves us is in a good place, however, he still leaves us, and at least me, with questions that I still want answered. All  of this being said, it is a good book, and definitely one that I will recommend for my daughter to read!

My Take on the Book

There is a “shop smart” and another section with facts about chicken. The cookbook has 6 different sections with corresponding recipes. Some of the sections are All-American, Latin and Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Asian / Indian.
Each recipe is written with attention to details for the reader. . There is the basic recipe for the chicken. She has included a “shopping list” so the reader knows what needs to be bought or found in one’s pantry. Helpful hints and nutrition facts are included for each recipe.
I chose two different recipes to prepare for my family. One was the Lemon-Pepper Chicken with Carrot and Zucchini Cannellini Beans.. The other one was Chicken Ragout with Mushroom Rice. Both recipes were easy to prepare. The recipes were tasty , however for my taste, I added additional herbs to flavor the dishes.

But the deeper Michael ventures into the strange world of UNICORNE, the quicker danger seems to find him. Is Michael strong enough to harness his newfound ability, complete the tasks set before him, and find his father?

My Take on the Book

This was a great book that once I picked it up I did not want to put it down. I am the type of person that loves a good fantasy and science fiction book and this young adult novel did not disappoint. Filled with spirits, ghosts, time travel and even a multi-dimensional universe, this book had a lot of everything. While the book is written for readers in middle school, as an adult I still loved to read this and you will too.  Now that I’ve gotten through this I guess I have to give it back to my own daughter so she now can read this herself! Just know that the author leaves you on the edge of your seat and actually leaves you hanging at the end of this too with the cliff-hanger that was the end. I now am anxiously awaiting the sequel and you will be too!

Explore the X-Men Universe in This New Book

About the Book
X-Men: The Characters and Their Universe tells the story of this unique band of comic book heroes from their creation in 1963 by the dream team of writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, through their late 1970s re-emergence as a platform for socially and politically relevant storytelling, and up to the present as one of the globe’s hottest franchises.

This colorful, lavishly illustrated volume also traces how the characters have been adapted into the media of television and film, including the ground-breaking 1992 animated series and the blockbuster feature films, including X-Men III: The Final Stand, released in May of 2006.

For fans of the comic books, this volume also provides a unique one-source catalogue of every major character that appeared from 1963 to the present, including all the various teamings of characters, the significant comic book series, the various character relationships and evolutions, and the classic storylines that have all woven together over the decades to create the dazzlingly complex and fascinating tapestry of the world of mutants.

X-Men: The Characters and Their Universe is a book that no fan of Marvel Comics, of super heroics, of animation and action adventure filmmaking, even of popular culture of the late 20th century itself, will want to be without.
My Take on the Book

As a person who has loved the X-Men for many years this book really brings together the entire universe and allows you to really get to know the characters and the history behind the universe itself. The X-Men franchise and story has evolved and changed so much over the years that having something like this is helpful as it is sometimes hard to follow the changing dynamics of the team, the changing backstories and powers of the characters, and more. All of this being said though, this comic has been one that has truly with stood the test of time and for me I think it has a lot to do with the face that there has always been a struggle between the two factions that you see here. Those that are main stream and those that are different. I think so many connect to the fact that so many of these “mutants” are so much like us with similar fears and concerns and have been ostracized because of their difference. Whether you agree with the premise of the story of the comic or not, this has definitely been a well written comic with amazing artistry throughout it’s 50+ years and this book encapsulates all of this well. There is a ton of information, images and more for any X-Men fan within this book. You will not be disappointed!

Never garden alone! The Month-by-Month Gardening series is the perfect companion to take the guesswork out of gardening. With this book, you’ll know what to do each month to have gardening success all year, from January to December. With a fresh look and updated information, Michigan Month-by-Month Gardening includes all the when-to and how-to information that has made these books so popular over the years, presented in a new, easier-to-use format with more full-color photography and the most current information available. Complete with specific advice on growing flowers (both annuals and perennials), bulbs, grasses, roses, groundcovers, shrubs, trees, and vines, this book is one no garden lover will want to miss! In the winter, certain tasks are needed to plan for and improve the next growing season. And once things really start growing in the spring and summer, you’ll find advice on the best way to get the most beautiful flowers, the lushest lawns, and the sturdiest trees. From planting to watering and fertilizing, and from maintenance to problem solving, Michigan Month-by-Month Gardening shows all levels of gardeners the best practices to grow satisfying and rewarding results.

My Take on the Book
If you live in the state of Michigan and enjoy gardening, you will truly enjoy reading and using this detailed book by Melinda Myers. This book is written month by month. Each month is divided into sections for the gardener with specific information about your Michigan landscape. The author included color photographs, step by step how to’s, information about composting and pruning bushes and trees, diagrams for plant hardiness, charts for planting vegetables, and how to order mulch and soil.

Since this is April, let me give you some examples of the information the author included for this month in Michigan. We need to check the bulbs that are growing and make note of their location and if any will need to be separated later or if we need to plant more. Preparing our soil for planting is necessary for the healthy plants we will put into the ground soon. You could begin to plant lettuce and other cool temperature plants. Raking the lawn to remove dead grass and remove leaves or dead plants is a job for April.
I think the Michigan gardener will find Melinda’s book a great resource and check list each month for the year.

Laura Dower’s book includes pages and pages of activities and projects that will bring hours of enjoyment to your child and even you. So many of the entries can be done with items you probably have in your house now or they can be easily located at a store near you. Here are a few of the entries: create a plastic bag parachute, make a kit for a natural disaster for your family, learn some new dance moves, make a pizza, learn to say “thank you” in other languages, and even invent a board game.

Older children could easily complete the activities independently. Younger children should have adult supervision. Laura’s book contains months of pure fun!
